Not that funny actually. At least not the message. Like so many of us, Till is blind to the fact that the things he desires are right around him. He does not see and he is unhappy. And he destroys things around him in his search (the Edelweiß is the ultimate symbol of natural purity and innocence in Bavaria and Austria). Meanwhile Richard's character has to hide his fetish in the basement as it is not acceptable.
I could live in that village....lol. But for real, Till reminds me so much of my dad in this video, and I'm sure he would bust out laughing if he was here to see this.

(which you probably understood now ...) then .. the song is Rammstein's ironic way of telling us we need to open our eyes and see what's around us. -he does not see the "equipped" girls ... - he does not see the pretty flower -he just has a "materialistic" wish that could easily be fulfilled if he COULD see the world around him.
It's not exactly their own airbase...they named the band in tribute to the dead after an air display disaster at Ramstein Airbase. I think it was the Italian aerobatic squad was performing the Pierced Heart display and smashed into each other. Loads of people on the ground died.

Yes, the air show was the inspiration. However, the 2 "m" in Rammstein was a typographical error and could not be reversed.
