Whipped Jello! Great Depression Era Food - How To Whip Jello - Budget Dessert

  • My mother grew up during The Great Depression. She began cooking and collecting recipes in 1937. This is a very old recipe for Whipped Jello. People used to whip Jello because it would stretch it and double the amount of servings that you got from a box of Jello. You can make it with any flavor Jello that you like. There are no other ingredients, only what's in the box of Jello.

One of my great aunts who was a teen in the depression era taught my mom a jello recipe using a similar method except she would do 3 layers. It was like the boxed 1-2-3 Jello in the 70's but it was before jello came out with that type of jello. She would use orange jello or strawberry jello to do it.
She would make one layer by the normal recipe with water, then she would make the next layer with a little bit of dream whip or whipping cream and water but not make it very whipped. Just firm amd creamy. It was more like the consistancy of the first layer but just a light orange or pink depending the flavor of jello she was using.
Then, she would use more dream whip or whipping cream and less water in the top layer and make it more fluffy.
When she finished it, she put it in the fridge and let it set. Sometimes she would layer it in parfait glasses to make it look pretty for a nice dinner dessert with a thin orange slice on top or a few slices of strawberry.
Then one day, jello company came out with the 1-2-3 brand Jello so she started buying that. It was tasty too and one of my favorite desserts as a kid.

Here's a recipe my mom got in 1957:
      LEMON BISQUE
1 large can cold evaporated milk, whipped stiff
1 package 3oz lemon jello dissolved in 1 1/4 cups boiling water, cool, whip into whipped milk, add 1/8 t. salt
      1/2 cup sugar
      3 T. Fresh lemon juice
Crush 1 box ( 1 lb.) vanilla wafers and place half on bottom of pyrex dish and half on top. Refrigerate till ready to use.
      Enjoy 💗
Can use orange jello, chocolate wafers
      Lime jello, chocolate wafers.....

I grew up eating versions of this and it's about the only way I like jello. I had forgotten about it for quite awhile until recently. We've been making it using sugar free jello and it has been a huge help since I developed diabetes to take care of my sweet tooth while staying in my food perimeters.

Great video. We used to mix whipped cream in the jello after it was partially set, but not this way. It looks really tasty. My grandma used to put the jello in a covered glass jar with a rope around the neck and keep it down in the well water to chill completely and pull the jar back out of the well when it was time to eat it.

Haven't made this since my kids were little. Thanks for the reminder. Used to add a bit of cream cheese to part of it and put it in the glasses in layers. Plain jello, then whipped with cream cheese jello, and repeat. Kids thought it was really special. Thanks for the reminder, I'll have to make it foe my grandchildren now. 😊

I have my mother’s old egg beater. I don’t remember her whipping jello, but I do remember her using it for homemade egg nog. Yum.
I’m making this for my husband because he likes lemon meringue, and I’ve never made that. Grandpa said that’s what it reminded him of, so I’ll make it for my husband. ❤
My mom made a jello dessert with lime or maybe pistachio dry jello that everyone loved. I’ve seen the recipe, but wish I had the one my mom used. She mixed the dry contents with cool whip and other stuff. The parishioners at her church loved it. It was good.

I want a vintage beater, but every time I find one it’s rusty. I want to try this with blue Jello & cool whip.

That was more entertaining than I'm currently used to. I'm curious if this method works with coffee that has milk in it, to make a frothy, cold coffee/pudding.

Hi I don’t know if it would work with coffee and milk. You don’t know until you try it. Let me know the outcome. Thank you for watching❤️Grandma👩🏻

@@GrandmaFeral I took it out of the fridge (it wasn't cold yet) and put the bowl in a larger bowl with frozen water bottles, so I could try to mix it like you did while it cooled down. My small battery-powered coffee mixer overheated and I attempted to whisk it.
Once it got cold enough it started to set while I was mixing, which was exciting!
I put it back into the fridge and it turned very firm, because I used a bunch of the plain gelatin powder. It does taste very good though, like chocolate coffee pudding.
It seems to have helped my muscles to be less sore, and I feel like exercising, so I'll probably make this more often.
      Thanks for the tips!

I'm surprised you can do this with jello without adding milk or cream. Does this work with sugar free jello mix?

@@GrandmaFeral turns out it doesn't work without the sugar. I whipped it for 15 minutes with a power mixer and got it very frothy, but after a few minutes in the fridge all the froth collapsed and it just turned into regular jello.
