Just what I wanted to write :D Amazing explanation. Wont need it, wont use it, but very cool info.
The video explanation is wrong. Your understanding is based on a flawed idea. It’s not compression. Or tension or anything.
The first example the paper fails because the ends are not fixed in place.
The second example it is much stronger because it is essentially fixed in place.the ends cannot move more outwards.

Mook Faru they’re inserted into the same grooves, both are fixed in place.
I'd have to agree with Mook Faru, tension requires an affixment whereas compression does not. I suspect a major reason many dams use an arch shape is that concrete is stronger in compression than tension.

Why would the arch dam taper inwards at the bottom, rather than outwards to better withstand pressure?

(Timestamp: 1:27) My answer: I think that the bottom of the dam will collapse first because it will be held under the highest pressure, as shown earlier in the video (0:30) "The magnitude of that pressure is proportional to the depth", where the bottom of the dam will have the greatest depth.

I assert that the arch dam collapsed because the human threw the marbles against it. Demonstrating it in such slow motion invalidates the intention. Perhaps your arch dam was far more structurally sound than you expected?
