Ep. 119 | Red Dots on Turkey Guns. The answer is Yes!

  • We have red dot sights, a big old Tom has a red head. Coincidence - We think not. Today’s modern shotguns, turkey loads and choke tubes make mounting a red dot sight to your gobbler-getter more practical than ever - and just might make your rig more effective than ever! And it’s really not that hard! There’s more than one way to mount your dot, and we go through those methods. And if you have a do-all shotgun for all your hunting applications, mounting your dot and taking it off depending on your upcoming hunt, just ain’t that big a deal. Not only is a red dot sight “parallax-free,” letting shooters get their shot payload downrange to its intended recipient no madder how awkward your cheek weld or shooting position, but they provide a finer aiming point, as well as don’t obscure your target - particularly at longer ranges. Fast and easy, put the dot on the thing and pull the thing. Toward the end we chat through magnified optics on shotguns for big game and turkeys and Ryan hucks out a sighting-in Pro-Tip that will save you $$$! Outfit your turkey gun with a red dot and take a hung up gobbler - and hang his hooks on a limb.

Around the 17 minute mark you subtly reach across, tease back the bolt, and check the chamber for clear. Your attention to safe and respect for your friends is admirable and should be second nature for us all. You earned my trust; I would play guns with you anytime!
    Thank you

Red Dots are great until the battery dies in the middle of a hunt. After this happened to my son two years ago, we switched to the Vortex Crossfire II 1-4x scope with an illuminated reticle. On 1x it has a wider field of view than any Red Dot I've seen and the eye relief is amazing. You can benefit from it's Red Dot while the battery lasts and use the crosshairs as a backup. The 4x magnification has come in handy too.

I have a speed beed on my Beretta A400 and the shim for cast is still in the gun and the drop option is in the midway point of the stock so neither are a limiting factor. I really like it! Great video!

One thing I would have like to hear about is 1MOA vs 3MOA vs 6MOA dots when turkey hunting

I just drilled and tapped by 870 express and put an EGW picatinny rail on it and your Venom dot. Turned out awesome. I only have a cheap drill press from Harbor Freight, a center punch to prep the drill holes, machinist square, and tap from Brownells. I had most of that stuff from a previous project but wasn't very difficult overall.

I have been listening on iTunes for about a year. As my first time watching on TH-cam I gotta say...Ryan looks about 20 years younger than he sounds!

Mark is already thinking a new shotgun is the best answer.

What's your best advice for mounting the Venom onto a SBE 2? Having the receiver drilled and tapped and just putting a rail on top?

Hey Guys! New to the podcast but I'm already a fan. Great info! I have a Kel Tec Ksg NR that I have a Red Dot and 3x Magnifier that works great for shooting slugs. What is your recommended method of sighting your dot on a shotgun at 100 plus yards?

Love watching these! Quick question what cameras do you use for the podcast? We have a client looking to do something very similar. Thanks!

Hey guys great podcast, I have a follow up question, I'd like to use Ryan's suggestion of the Crossfire 2 on my Mossberg 500 deer barrel. However I'm a bit OCD and would like to scope to match the camo pattern on the gun. What would be your suggestion on how to go about matching them? A wrap? Does vortex sells scopes in camo patterns? Tia

    • @VortexNation
      @VortexNation  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

We don't sell any scopes in camo patterns unfortunately - just too many out there to try and match. You can get your optic "Dipped" pretty easily - there are lots of hydro dippers out there who will do it and it matches perfectly. It also won't void the warranty on the optic either.

Just take the dot off the rail, but leave the rail on. Then you don't need plug screws, wouldn't need to worry about screwing up the aluminum each time.

I have a Remington V3 that I put a red dot on for turkey hunting. The problem is the red dot sits a little high to be able to get a good cheek weld on the stock. Do you have any suggestions on a good cheek riser that goes on/off easy?

Contact sumtoy customs to see if he makes a mount for that gun.

Of course a vortex podcast is going to recommend an optic on a shotgun. Save the money for ammo and gear you actually need.

I have had a red dot on my shot gun turkey and deer gun for 7 years or more.....most of my older friends, brother and others made fun of me. NOW THEY ALL HAVE THEM. Why not make things easier...especially as we age and lose vision. Im 51 and can easily see a red dot over a brass or fluorescent bead any day
