Cartridge Talks has helped me so much in not only picking my hunting weapons but also a robust amount on general knowledge about different guns and cartridges and optics. Thank you all!
Shot my first turkey this year hunting for the first time in Eastern Wa before I get out of the navy! 9in beard, 3/4 in spurs about 20-25 lbs Marriam. Spent 7 days camping and finally got it done on the last afternoon before I headed back to western Wa. Crazy hunt and now I’m hooked!
As I introduce my son to turkey hinting at the same time I am trying to figure it all out, I cannot thank you enough for vides like this. My son and I enjoyed this video. Helps him to understand the differences between calibers. Thanks again for the information.
Apex is a game changer! My dad had open heart surgery in October and thought he wouldn’t be able to Turkey hunt because he shoots a mossberg 835 he switched this year to 20 gauge and was able to kill a turkey. Thanks to the apex load!
I’ve been debating on setting up a 28 for turkeys for the last year now considering i hunt public and walk sometimes 8,10+ miles in a day lugging around a 12 gauge and comments like these are gonna make me send it off the deep end and start building😂
@@ChaseDenton-uz1wb I made the switch and haven't looked back! CZ makes a sweet little pump 28GA that I use for birlds/rabbit. The Mossberg SA28 runs flawlessly and is a great little turkey gun.
Got my first long beard this year. 11” beard. 1.5” spurs. Eastern Gobbler, the silent type, old wise bird, young gobbler blew his cover. Hit em while he was running at just under 40 yards. 20 gauge TSS Heavyweight 7 shot. Finally I can shave my huge beard, not that long beard season is over.
I've shot 12 gauge for as long as I can remember but after watching this I'd love to have a 28 Gauge! very good testing and I'm glad you guys counted every single BB! lol
I was surprised with the appearance of recoil with the 28. Looked like it recoiled hard. Although the ones I have shot, seem to have less recoil than most of my rifles.
@@chrisvankoevering3549 well they are using dense tungsten with a higher weight load that would normally be in a 28 guage so the lighter frame doesnt handle it as well as a regular laod
Great video as usual, I’ll pray for a full recovery of Ryan’s shoulder. It’s great to see the patterns of the various set ups. Thank you for all your hard work!
This was a very informative comparison. My 11 y/o grand son is way into hunt after he saw me drop an antelope at 200 yards. He is small in stature so I'd select the .410 and gift it to him when old enough. Keep up the good work. You guys are awesome. Steve
I just a Jebs headhunter .650 with LB XR 3.5” #4 from the 20” Mossberg 835 and I’ve yet to find a reason to go to TSS! I don’t need the Tom’s more dead than dead! Great information! Awesome video! Glad to see the 12g still getting some love!

These videos make my work week tolerable. I look forward to them every week for the past two and a half years. Subsequently they've also led to many new purchases of guns, gear and optics. After watching this one I now feel like I need a 28 gauge and a 16 gauge... thanks Mark, Ryan and sometimes Jimbo.
After watching several portions more than once I’m of the opinion 12 gauge. Tungsten cost $6-$7 a round. Lead about a $1. I have a 25+ year old 500 turkey 12 gauge with 24” ported barrel & aftermarket choke tube. Charles Daly semi 28” barrel aftermarket tube also. Mossberg scoped, Daly not, my Stevens.410 bore with red dot turkey TSS shotgun cost too much to shoot. I usually shoot 20-35 yards but have made 50 yard shots. Knowing the limits & pattern is crucial as pointed out. At 72 years old I’ll stick with my 12s. I purchased 7 boxes of Tungsten .410. I now have paid more for the ammunition than the gun with red dot new. Great show, Vortex Optics are the best (especially for old eyes) I have several on Rifles. Thanks for the advice and education. Old dogs can learn new tricks. Keep up the good work guys.
I just live these guys. I listen to them every morning on the way to work and on the way home. I would have liked to see some Primo's Jellyhead chokes in there but its good they used Jeb's too. I would probly pick the 28g Autoloader if i was to pick one.
It's been a very long time since I have hunted and the rifles you are showing is unbelievable compared to what I hunted with as a boy it would be nice to go back hunting with a rifle like that
Great video showing the importance of patterning a shotgun at different yardages and different load types. I have been interested in the 28 gae and loved learning more about it in your video.
Watched this after listening/watching the follow up podcast. As impressive as the stats were in the follow up, seeing the shots as they were patterning in this episode was even more impressive. And really illustrated the huge difference in recoil between the 12ga and other sub gauges.
I have a Vortex scope on my deer rifle and it's great. I'd like a sight on my 12ga Mossberg Turkey Thug but it's an older model with no way to attach. As a "senior" I don't need the recoil so I'll be looking for a 20-28 ga. model. I want an adjustable stock so may have to look for a "junior" model due to my shorter length of pull. Enjoyed your info, thanks.
Thank you Vortex Nation for the video and contest! I learned a lot from this video about different factors to take into affect in what to decide to use when shooting. I am used to either 12 ga or 20 ga, so it was nice to learn more on .410 and 28 ga.
12 gauge is my choice. Thanks for your time guys. I love ballistic test you guys did a great job covering all the bases. It’s great to learn about all the different loads. 🎉
Wow. That’s a great comparison in gauges and loads. Impressed with the targets specs of the smaller gauges. I would have never thought they’d compete with the big ones. 😮 Thanks guys.
Cartridge Talks provide a much better unerstanding of the differences between the various gauges and shot types than any other offerings that I have been able to see. Thank you.
Great information on the many different options for taking down a longbeard! I have been looking into a 12 gauge Mossberg turkey gun but I believe you guys have made me change my mind to 20 gauge.
I was watching just to see what red dot you guys were using but a chance to win one...even better! Those Jebs chokes are awsome, I run one in both my turkey and duck guns.
Things have come a long ways from my 1st turkey hunt 35yrs ago. Now I'm trying to get my children up to speed and involved with the latest & greatest. Thank you for the opportunity!
Thank you for calculating the recoil. I've done test videos with those 12s and shot boxes in an afternoon of videos and its brutal. The first shell is fine, after 5 though, you're ready to go home.
I have never been out on a Turkey hunt, but was just considering this hunt! Thanks for the information and nudge towards taking my first Turkey hunt adventure!
I have been blessed to take turkeys with every gauge but my favorite would be the 28 gauge. I have my eye on the Eventide and will have to have a red dot on it. Last year I started using a red dot and it is a game changer! Thank you guys for doing this video very informative. I had my wife watch it and she’s still a 20 gauge fan! 8:07
I think they did a great job comparing the gauges and loads. It gives a good definition of the difference between lead and TSS and what to expect. You didn’t need to mention the cost difference because once someone looks at TSS, they’ll realize it immediately! I have a 410 a 28 and a 20 Gauge. I’m using TSS and the two sub gauges and I’m impressed with it.
TSS is the way to go. I switched from my SBS 12ga with JEBS choke to my TriStar Viper G2 .410 with JEBS choke. Lightweight and it gets the job done. Dropped one in it's tracks last year at 42yds.
I found this very informative and eye opening. I’ve always been a little skeptical of going all the down to .410 but it’s pretty neat to see what it’s actually capable of!
For someone like myself who does not have a shotgun and is contemplating getting into turkey hunting at the age of 64, this was very helpful in guiding any future shotgun purchase considerations. Thanks!
This was very interesting and informative. It's pretty amazing to me that smaller can be better, even smallest, for Turkey as opposed to wing shooting. I have to remember that you are basically shooting a short range rifle with exploding bullets so to speak.
As a father looking to find and set up a turkey shotgun for the kids, this was very informative. I kind of like the 28 gauge but have always been a 20 gauge fan. Thanks. Great video.

As i get older i enjoy using the smaller calibers in 410 and possibly a 28 gauge. I'm a hunting fanatic and still enjoy the challenges of the outdoors with different equipment.
Great overview. I am not at the point where I am purchasing specific shotguns for specific game so I'll probably stick with my 12-gauge that I use for waterfowl. If I were to get a specific gobbler gun, the 20-gauge would be in my safe.
The Cartridge Talk was awesome. I've been leaning on doing more with a 20 gauge and maybe even more with a 28 gauge. Learned a lot here and I really appreciate the detail you went into that made it all the more enlightening.

Of course, but chokes are a complicated topic all of its own.
Each one are very good shotguns
Ya left out the 16ga.
