- Professor Pedro Sauer is an 8th Degree Red and Black belt in Gracie Jiu Jitsu and one of the world's most technical instructors. Here he shows the Rickson Gracie Arm Bar set up.

He just cut right to the chase. Instead of doing all the baby steps which are essential when learning the armbar, you can pull this move once you understand the body movement required for the standard armbar. If you think about it, the high level guys don't really do armbars in the standard form. They already understand the movement and the mechanics so they simply explode on you in a smooth kind of way. That was beautiful.

The first thing I learned in Jiu Jitsu here in Brazil, during the first days I tried from numerous of different blues, purple, brown and black belts is when inside a guard, do not put your hands over the top where the student is because you are basically giving your arm to your opponent. You either hold it way low, near the belly buttom area or his arm, or both.
I trained at Pedro Sauer's gym when he I was a teenager and the gym was in Salt Lake City, Utah. He is has the knowledge on the ground and all the finer details to allow you to understand the techniques!
Every time I watch one of Master Sauer's videos, a light bulb goes off. Guy is amazing!
Awesome I love submissions that only take one move, its hard to catch fast athletic guys with a bunch of steps
Thanks for this tutorial. I am looking forward to the next films. Cheers
Thanks!
@Saforge judo does this as well. the red belt in bjj is more for those who've embodied the lifestyle for their entire life. If you got your black belt at 19, you wouldn't see red belt until almost 70 years old.
@Saforge Judo does it as well. At 6th degree black belt in Judo can wear an optional red and white belt, at 8th and 9th dan they can go to full red belt.
Awesome. I never thought of it like this before.
You still training?
@Pastoreba thanks, i'll keep that in mind. i'm still rather new to bjj and even though armbars are simple in theory, i find them to be quite hard to pull off compared to other subs, personally.
Yeah it's Justin Angelos. a long time student of Pedro Sauer from when he taught in Salt Lake City, Utah. They've been friends a long time and Professor has given him all of his belts.
so smooth
@sonnych69 - Thanks, I've seen some clips of Sensei Odas Ne Waza from the days preceeding GJJ.. quite impressive
Awesome.
Elegant!
man he moves effortlessly
Great! Gotta practice this. The regular armbar from guard is great, but the opponent usually sees it coming...
Bello profesor👌🏼🤙🏼
my teacer brandon hetzler is a Rikson Gracie black belt and this is how he taught the armbar frm day one. the tiny little invisible techniques are what rickson gracie jj is all about,its what makes it the best
@TheBobbaduche amen.
very nice move
Simplicity is always best.
@arctrooper86 The reason it can hurt your armbar technique is because people use the cup to assist in the armbar as a fulcrum, when you should be using the space between your thigh and your groin.
@CollusionOfChains
If your doing this correct its very hard to pull his arm out and even if you barely hold on to his arm/hand. the trick is clamping down on his neck and back with your legs. Doing that puts his arm in a weak position and its trapped tight.
The website you've got linked isn't an active site! I want more Pedro!
@dbartyzel Thanks for the response.
@dirtyminded604 he can go to 9th degree red belt, but 10th degree red belt is reserved for the founders, helio and carlos, gastao, etc.
Nice
simplicity is the best true, like also bas rutten 's armbar
omg thank you
@unsupa ah, thanks. I was under the impression it was it was just the founders that could wear a red belt. But i guess that's only the 10th degree red. 9th degree is the furthest one could go.
Rickson by armbar!
They are long time friends. Professor would just tell Justin to spit it out if he found it offensive. The brown belt (a black belt now) is a direct student of Professor Sauer's from his first American school in Utah. He prob just forgot to spit it out. I never used to see him roll with gum and he's my original instructor.
For all the guys talking about Judo I agree it's awesome. However I have a question for you. What came first? Judo or jiujitsu?
@fcs77 I agree :)
@CollusionOfChains
He's right. the armbar is one of the more difficult submissions to get down, but it opens up a whole new game when you do. You can get armbars from a lot of places.
@sonnych69 - Agree
@chojaewon I train GJJ under Royce Gracie (not name dropping, just letting you know I have a little experience) I have worn a cup for a long time, and recently stopped and found my movement was better. So you can protect you junk, and perhaps be limited in hip and thigh movement, or go freeball and risk a bad touch but gain better JJ.
the plane!! Boss the plane!!!! good vid
@AlmightyZEDANIUM yes, i meant the only ones that could wear the red 10th degree.
@unsupa sure is wikipedia in here
@lagook - Yeah, it's now somewhere in his gastro-intestinal tract
@dirtyminded604 First off, I can't answer your question, i've never taken a BJJ class in my life, but i never knew that BJJ set up their belt system so that there was a step above black. As far as i know, no other martial art does this, could you tell me why BJJ decided to go a different way with their setup? (Sry I couldn't help with your question)
7 ppl got tapped by this move
24 actually
This is still possible even if both arent wearing Gi's right. Same movement and everything?
wow
@kanguesso word he moves good
Nobody I know teaches the armbar without gripping the gi (where the trapped shoulder is). This along with the knee helps keep the guy from pulling his arm out.
@sotoalfredo20 juji gatame, close enough ;)
juji means cross, gatame armbar, cross armbar.
@cyrax622 BJJ is younger than Judo, like Judo is younger than Jiu-Jitsu.In the end they are all the same art...Osss!
best
@razvanescu86 I mean... Clearly the elbows aren't important in the movement because at the end of the lesson, he has his elbows in the air with his hands behind his head... It seems like the most important step is being able to WHIP your left leg up.
That was beautiful
@rednek316 undefeated 8th degree
hey thats the brown belt an that other vid where he rolls with pedro to get his black belt and eveyone was laughing including himself, he knew pedro was toying with him but they all had fun.
Its called a jujukatami I don't know if I'm spelling it right
That's the way Fedor did it to mark coleman right?
Could someone answer a curious question ive had. Pedro is an 8th degree red/black belt. That is the last degree before going to the full red belt. But red belts are reserved for the founding fathers, and Gracie brothers only. Does that mean Pedro Saur (in terms of belt ranks) has reached his pinnacle? and will no longer gain a higher rank? just always wondered that. anyone?
i dream to training with master pedro sawer
Rickson by armbar.
@ladysavala japanese jujitsu came first, then that was developed into the sport of judo, which is where we all know bjj derived from...
gatame means lock or hold.
1:53 LOL he grunts. XD
Chicletinho!!
Never seem a person chewing gum while practicing. LOL!
BJJ vs Judo: Cmon guys. Treat this for what it is, an exceptional technique that can be used by both styles of practitioner. Show respect and train hard.
24 people got tapped by this move
Thats how I was taught the arm bar.
I've been rolling for a while and I'm finally going to a school to learn nogi jitsu...and they were kinda anal with me following all the steps, but this is how I normally do it and it worked really well for me.
I know it's good to drill the steps but like spoonman73 said, simplicity is best sometimes.
Just my thoughts.
@Patbaker60014 You realize they're the same, right?
When i try this, or any armbar from a bottom position, my opponents hand will just slip right out of it like it was nothing :( Guess i gotta hold the hand even tighter or something..
boa
Amazing how 2 people think they can do it better than an 8th degree black belt.
@flatlinerking lol. well after 2 years of training, you kinda learn some stuff without the help of wiki, ya know?
Juji gatame.
@henh32 because bjj is a form of kosen judo
This is a great move... if you have long enough legs to pull it off. Alas, us short guys can't do this.
looks stupid, but this is a dominant move when rolling multiple times at lower levels... up to around purple belts this will work amazingly
excellent upload, i thought that it was very disrespectful and rude that the professor's partner was chewing gum on the mats during the demo.
i still dont get how he uses his elbows..
I read chewing gum releases endorphins in the brain and in return can actually help you retain information.. If true chewing gum while learning bjj could be very helpful. Just a thought.
@iGreekSalad bjj is created from judo....
just for your information...
I agree with otsego but it is not just a choking hazard. Chewing while rolling can lead to biting your tongue as well. It's also disrespectful to Pedro.
The elbows help. Passing a leg over is useless by itself. The most important part is getting the hips up and learning how to keep them in line. He's all crushing the guy into it with his other leg.
My Judo instructor teaches it like this
That is a Japanese Jiu Jitsu move! It was taught way before Rickson or even Helio was alive!
So?
That guy working with the professor is chomping away on gum. Is that even allowed in that school?
Fuckng annoying
Sometimes i chew gum when my mouth is really dry it helps as long as you dont choke on it or spit it on the mat
@Tobelli It's fine, but Professor Pedro Sauer.
Is that guy chewing gum?
Pedro Sauer vs Ms Utah II make it happen -_-
+Petriealright Get your hips closer to his shoulder.
if someone grabs your gi with straight arms like that they deserve to be armbarmed like that, god damn, does that ever happen (above white belts off course)
Chewing in front of the professor, well....
I'm looking fo setups anybody no anything good I tried this I drilled it and everyone sees it coming.
if you are trying to get it, you cannot help but communicate that to your opponent, and of course they will counter. you have to train it until you can do it without planning, the moment a guy brings his arm up, you flow right into it. this is true of any high level stuff, you cannot think your way through it and expect a high level of success. this takes time and mushin, or movement and action that is coming from your entirety, not just your brain. japanese arts, and I see BJJ as rooted in japanese budo, particularly rickson's way, has a big emphasis on mushin.
disclaimer, im not a BJJ specialist, but ive studied japanese and other martial arts and sport psychology, and this principle comes up a lot when you get to really high level performance, beyond just competency in technique. it is not physical skill but mental and emotional awareness and flexibility.
Set it up with the threat of collar chokes and breaking posture
@pballakid wrestlers haha
Trust me when I say that I don’t know what I’m talking about
If you don't swallow it
simple but hard.. not that hard but not that simple it's simply hard.. is it ?
@iGreekSalad "bjj - judo" Brazilian Jiu-jitsu minus Judo? = what? WTF?
