      Many Americans see obligation as antithetical to their fetishized concept of freedom. Everybody knows that healthcare isn't free, it's paid for by taxes. Taxes are the contributions that people make to the society within which they live. Because the taxes are obligatory, they are seen as a negative, even though the people viewing it as a negative would be perfectly willing to voluntarily contribute money they earn towards other public works.

      I'm all for decent wages, but I think they need to be more savvy on this one. A decent wage in Maryland is not the same as a decent wage in some other parts. 15$*8*21*12 = 30.240$ annual... that is 1.5 times the average salary in Puerto Rico and 3/4 of the average salary in Mississippi, and that is not taking into account the area disparities inside Mississippi.
      They should link minimum wages to some indicators, at least at first, and then, gradually, raise them.

    • @xman2008
      @xman2008 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Jo Pao Of course- if you’re going to do a minimum wage, you’ll want to marry it to the cost of living. Plus there’s also a million interconnected things that need to happen that cannot be listed in a TH-cam comment.

    • @Seethi_C
      @Seethi_C 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You would have the match the minimum wage to the city with the HIGHEST cost of living in order to make sure everyone is taken care of.
      Then you have to consider that some people have 3, 4, 5 kids to take care of. We have to make sure the minimum wage is enough for them.
      Don’t fight for $15, fight for $30, at least

    As a European, I find it incredible that questions such as healthcare and free tuition are still up to debate in the USA. You guys are like, 50 years late. Socialists in your country aren't evil stalinists, they're just people who are trying to make you catch up the 50 years of progress you missed.

      You do know that Europe was devastated by WW2 right? Meaning Europe had time to rebuild itself and try new things. The UK NHS came into being after WW2 as a to get people back on their feet. America on the other hand suffered far less thus less reason to rebuild.

    • @teubert2
      @teubert2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @Alec Norton Combine that with the "Red Scare" after WW2 and it quickly becomes obvious why the US doesn't have universal healthcare and free tuition.

    • @albevanhanoy
      @albevanhanoy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +83

      "America Suffered far less from the war" is not an excuse for having progressed less. If anything, it should have been a reason for them to have progressed *more* .
      Also, I understand the whole red scare thing, but still, even with universal healthcare and free tuition, you'd still be FAAAAAR from communism.

      @Albe Van Hanoy "... you'd still be FAAAAAR from communism." that's true, but that does not mean the politicians and people at the time (during the cold war) didn't think otherwise.
      But now that the USSR is no more, there is not really any excuse to not get these things that Europe has had for decades. Or that's how I see it anyway.

Sir, $55,000 is not rich in the U.S. and it certainly wouldn't be rich taxed at 41 percent --- and that's just a single federal tax in your country not including other taxes I'm not familiar with. How would Twiddle follow appearances from Page McConnell of Phish in 2016 and Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead in 2017 at this year’s installment of the group’s Tumble Down music festival in Burlington’s Waterfront Park? How about an introduction from Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders?
      The 2016 presidential candidate took the stage and urged attendees to vote against President Donald Trump in 2020. His remarks came ahead of a shortened set from Twiddle as severe weather led organizers to end the evening after just four songs. Senator Sanders previously sent two letters of appreciation to the Vermont-based quartet to thank Twiddle for hosting the first two installments of Tumble Down.

At 18, I went to get HPV shot, which is basically two shots. It was $114 for the first shot. I never went for the second shot because it was so much money. I now have genital warts because I could not afford the second shot. (I had my grandmother help pay for the first shot, and after paying the sum she looked at me and said in a raised voice, "$114! That is too much money. You're paying for the rest of it.") I just wasn't worth the trouble or sacrifice of a much needed inoculation.

    America, I've been backpack'g around the world since 2016. In Singapore now. Singapore has buses where each bus line comes every 10 minutes. Its subway trains are driverless and show up every 4 minutes. It is a very green city. Everybody has health insurance. Over 90% owns homes. Their air force can kick the butts of any neighbour. Singapore is only 5.6 million, smaller than NYC or L.A. All of that is because of government support, i.e. SOCIALISM.
    Americans need to get off the fear of the word "SOCIALISM" or "socialist". The archaic Republicans will play off of that fear. But socialism is a neighbourhood park. Socialism is the local library. Socialism is your money and my money spent on an aircraft carrier. Open your eyes and stop being blindly led into a dark alley of fear. I'm not saying socialism is the answer. I'm just saying it's with us and we shouldn't be afraid of the word.
    I've been to over 5O countries so far. I will say that countries that I'd be happy to live in: Denmark, Holland, Iceland, Japan, S, Korea - have their governments spending more money than the USA does on trains, subways, airports, health care, dental care, eye care, job training and re-training, public housing (nice ones), parks & public places. America is falling way behind.

      These countries are not socialist for fucks sake. They are some of the most open and free capitalist economies in the world. Some of them use SOCIAL DEMOCRATIC values like employing a generous welfare state and providing young people with the same opportunities to succeed as their richer peers. They also dont have minimum wages in Scandinavia enforced by the government, but strong unions with good relationships with their industries.
      Singapore on the other hand is a tiny Island which has to be carefully managed by a strong autocratic government. Singapore is also very unequal compared to the others you mention.

      Because communists called themselves "socialists" (think what the name USSR stands for - "communist" is not in there). That seems to be the extent of it, a decades of hate of communism embodied in its main empire (which was truthfully pretty evil, in addition to being the opposing superpower) entrenched in the culture and making everything guilty by association.

      Probably for the same reason that Americans can't identify countries on a globe, (lack of) education. When all you're taught is how wonderful capitalism is and beat the dang commie USSR, then no push to learn about other systems.
      A lot of people (aka Trump supporters) not only associate socialism with communism, they also associate it with NAZI's. Many people in the USA admire the super rich, even though they themselves are dirt poor. It's very hard to change a culture.

    I have a real question : Why the US and Bernie himself define himself as a " socialist "? Here, in France, and in most of European countries , including Australia, what he describes is ALREADY how our economic model works and our gouvernement are NOT socialist supporters ! We live in "progressive" countries where everyone have an healthcare for free ( the difference is that we pay more taxes to finance the system). We go to college for free, and people from abroad come and ask our students that came out from our free schools to work with them. Central, Polytechnique Masters are free degrees and are internationally wellknown. And who pays those professors ? Our taxes and it's completely normal. I mean, your parents can be poor, you still have chances to become a surgeon without ending up 200 000 dollars in debt by the age of 27 yers old. This-is-insane. What is dangerous is that, I read a lot about Americans financial situations because I follow Dave Ramsey facebook. And I can't believe that parents are posting " my daughter wants to go to college, I'm mad at her because she will end up in debt and her degree won't help her to get more money". Well, going to college , being educated isn't only about earning more money: you learn things about how the world works, you learn about positive values, you become familiar with books, newspapers ... knowledge. An entire country that can't send his children to college ends up electing Trump as a president! I mean, it is a civilisation problem that Americans can believe what Trump is saying, that they can be that easily brainwashed . Well, Nazis or a new Hitler will never come back in Europe, why ? Because school teachers do their job and prevent it to happen again. Free public schools do their jobs with public money. Yes, we also pay more taxes for our public schools than you do. We try to keep our public schools as good as private ones ( there are private schools in France but it's not the majority of our school system). Our journalists did research about Marine Le Pen supporters : 90% of those white people didn't go to college and 30% of them had no jobs or were stuck on temporary jobs. What is happening in America is the result of a financial crisis that started in early 2000. When the US government had to cut some budgets like public school and healthcare. GOP government can't raise taxes because they are elected by rich people. Rich people will pay more taxes than poor ones, it's true. Americans choose to enable another rich guy to buy his fourth yatch but will let a kid with genetic diabetes die because his family can't afford the insulin treatment. The US is a wild place to live. And now, americans will spend millions on an imaginary space to fight imaginary enemies .. but wil never spend them on healthcare or good public schools. We don't understand.. Of course, our countries have its own problems... but dying because of a car accident because you have no money to pay the bills isn't one of them. Bernie isn't socialist. He just knows how others countries model work.

      Nathalie C You deserve a gold my friend. You have just described the harsh reality of America.

    • @lisastone4549
      @lisastone4549 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Nathalie C,
      Bravo ! Well-expressed truth. The sad truth is that the majority of Americans are poorly educated by public schools (the institutions, not the teachers - more on that later), which are intentionally underfunded. The schools, with the approval of state legislatures throughout the U.S., then naturally turn into cesspits of academic non-achievement, bullying and violent crime. Not that money solves everything ; far from it. But if you are a child from an already disadvantaged family and you attend a crumbling, rotting classroom filled with outdated textbooks, or with inadequate heating/cooling, this will not be a morale booster to you. Especially if you are frequently hungry throughout the school day because your parent(s) are not paid a decent livable wage.
      Not "bleeding heart liberalism," just the truth. I was a substitute teacher (K-12) for several years and watched educational standards fall to abysmal levels.
      Whose fault was it ? IMHO : 1. NOT the Teachers - there were/are teachers on every level of ability, determination, and God-given talent. Some care so deeply for their students that it is awe-inspiring ! Most (at least ) work incredibly hard & do a very good job of educating, protecting and even inspiring their young charges. And yes, there are a few "bad apples" in the bunch, as with any profession. But the majority of teachers are profoundly dedicated, realistic problem-solvers. Teachers, while not "blameless" for lowered standards, are certainly NOT the cause (but have become the easy target of blame) !
      2. Are parents to blame ? Somewhat. But only those who expect each teacher to be a "Miracle Worker" for their child, and fill in the gaps left by inattentive parenting. Parents have always been responsible for teaching basic moral & religious principles. If kids don't find answers in their home or church/synagogue/temple of worship, they will seek them elsewhere. And the answers they find will probably not be what the parents expect ! Yes, moral instruction can be complicated and a tough job, especially for tired working parents. But that is one of the assumed responsibilities of parenting. IMO, even if a child attends a "religious" school, the parent(s) are still the primary authority of moral teaching and the most important examples to their impressionable young ones.
      Secondly, parents should be actively involved in their kids' studies. Know which classes they take, & whether they are successfully completing homework and tests. Any scholastic talents, interests or weaknesses ? Again, this is on the parent. The teacher may have 35 or more students per class & probably teaches six class periods per day. My suggestion : check in at least weekly with your kids. Make sure they do their own work and properly credit all sources for papers & speeches.
      And let the teacher(s) know that you support their efforts. Everyone likes to know that they are appreciated !
      3. Are lowered achievement levels the student's fault ?
      Possibly to some degree. Back in the Cretaceous period (my school days), I was told by both my teachers and parents that : "It's YOUR education. You get out of it what you put into it." True then, true now. Students must be actively invested in their learning experience. It is the student's responsibility to bring enthusiasm, respect for teachers & classmates and diligence to the school. Attitude is even more important than academic talent !
      4. Finally, who is to blame for the dismal (formerly outstanding ! ) level of academic achievement in the U.S. ? IMHO, achievement levels, classroom & schoolyard behavior & attitudes in general took an extreme downward slide after the installation of George W. Bush into the White House.
      Concurrent with this (illegitimate) election, newly elected Reps. & Sens. on both the state & national levels began to cut school funding in virtually every state. The excuse (pretext) given was that the U.S. had to "pay for the war," which was, not incidentally, an unjustified war waged against the wrong nation on a faulty pretext for completely false and evil reasons. But I digress...
      Republicans in the House & Senate slashed school funding in nearly every state and claimed this was to "..balance the (federal) budget..." Something, by the way, which has NOT been accomplished since the Clinton Administration. So, funding is cut and "No Child Left Behind" is promoted, a grade-level testing program which is now required (but not funded ! ) by most states. Talk about a "recipe for disaster ! " Now teachers, desperate to keep their jobs - predicated almost entirely on test results - quit teaching any stimulating or challenging subjects, and just "taught to the test." Again, in order to keep their jobs. And for doing so, teachers were harshly criticized by parents, school administrators and GUESS WHO ? - Rep.toid legislators WHO PASSED THE VERY LAWS for which they were now blaming teachers !!!
      Whew !!! It would almost be funny if it weren't so despicable !
      My point, and I do have one, is this : How can you tell if a man is a Republican ? He's the one who rapes the woman, blames her for the crime, then sends her a bill for "services rendered." Oh, you crazy Rep.toids ! They wreck the system, lie about why they're doing it, blame their predecessors for the poor results, then lie about why you should re-elect them to "fix the problem." the devil must be so proud of you !
      Go Rep.tilians !
      Shalom !

      I can relate, I'm a teacher too. Some schools are like this in France. But in France, the school budget is the second budget of the gov! We are the country with the biggest school budget. ''the installation of George W. Bush into the White House.'' I understand now. One of our teacher told us that Dick Cheney was a chief executive of a major oil services company. That's why the US went to Afghanistan. He told us the '' pipeline '' story. School in Europe really enables any young kid to have a have a critical mind. So when we heard about the Iraq war, we knew that Georges W Bush was manipulated by the US industry and we knew that Iraq invasion was about oil. If GOP plan is only enable rich people to pay less taxes as possible, only rich people will go to school. Public schools will disappear if it's not already the case. Can you imagine how scary is it to read '' ain't no use going to school, it's too expensive it leads nowhere, take several jobs and work with your hands to pay the bills'' what ??. It means that knowledge isn't a value anymore in the US. This is a civilisation problem. The US is the most powerful country in the world. It can't turn out like this. In France, and Europe in general, school and knowledge is the center of every single gouvernement speech, especially because we experienced the world war II, we can't let the story repeats itself. In France, we thought our new president would cut the education budget ( he isn't a traditional left candidate) he didn't. Children need to be able to think by themself and recognize the specter of nazism in someone speech or behaviors. I'm not bashing the US. You're a great, creative and powerful country. We have our problems too. But...something is wrong with the average education level of american people.

      Nathalie C good points. I can feel your feel as a Dutchman :P It's the vicious circle in America of being stuck in ideology, religion, and mostly very lacking media that insists on the society's focus being on entertainment and BS rather than intelligent discussion, so far so that intellectual arguments in many environments have almost become controversial. It is part the organic setup from elitism, as well. Human psychology on America's society can deliver great research. We can only hope that enough (online) media and citizens will focus on and start to realize the basic common sense needs that certain politicians can help to provide.
      Justice Democrats are doing great right now, check it on here on YT. I can also recommend subscribing to progressive channels like Secular Talk, TYT, David Pakman, etc. Much more interesting content and takedowns over there positively influencing a large group of citizens.

      New Zealand also has private options for those who can afford it, which Bernie Sanders is against because he is against any form of universal healthcare that isn't his single payer plan.
      Plus, NZ healthcare professionals are constantly on strike or are emigrating because they're not paid enough. It's a huge problem at the moment because the government promised too much it coudn't deliver.

      You do realize that that's a failed right wing hit-piece right?
      Sen. Sanders is the least earning Senator in the Senate. If your'e trying to convince us that he's a sold out or corrupt shill like Clinton or Trump, then you're not convincing anyone.
      Bernie doesn't lie, and his ideas are sound.
      He needs to be allowed to fix the US, all we ask is for 4 years, Trump already got his.
      And anything Bernie will do is far better than what Trump or Obama achieved.
      No one wants to crown him lifelong emperor, but we do NEED his ideas to be turned to truth.
      ---------
      Do NOT vote against your own better interests.
      We NEED Universal Healthcare
      UBI
      _Free_ education from primary school to University
      We MUST protect and conserve the environment, have clean water
      We need to improve our crumbling infrastructure; what all other politicians talk about but never actually do
      This includes improving transport and bringing back Net Neutrality and improving Internet access and Anonymity protections
      Need to invest more in NASA and scientific research(free education helps with this)
      We need to stop getting into pointless wars too.
      if you're wondering where all the money will come from, might I remind you that the US $ is not based on gold, and the Govt. can pop as much as it needs into existence, money is just a way to get people to do stuff.
      and all that Debt can be easily resolved by 1) Buying back all foreign owed debt($$$ we owe China)
      and then 2) transferring all that debt to a government agency, the US Govt would then only owe itself all that Debt. and then since we own and print that $$$, the US could just forgive itself all those Debts and write it all off, and Viola, a real life magic trick, all the Debt magically disappears due to clever slight of hand.
      then we get back on the Gold Standard to keep the $ from losing value in the future due to any future dwindling in the US's influence n the world stage.

Shouldn't a "centrist" "pragmatist", if serious about Democratic power, have put Bernie up as the candidate? It's pretty telling about where mainstream Dems are in their strategic thought, and makes the term "pragmatism" (in a political sense) ring pretty god damned hollow.

      I think it's pretty obvious to anyone who can read a dictionary that Trump is a fanatical fascist:
      www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/fascism
      *fascism*
      \ˈfa-ˌshi-zəm
      _1. often capitalized : a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition"_
      ..."
      _Exalts nation... above individual_ = America First politics, harming citizens and foreigners alike.
      _autocratic government_ = routinely rams highly-unpopular (even amongst his own party) policy changes into effect by Executive Order, which almost always face court challenges, (skirts those on loopholes), can't even get his own party to agree on anything in Congress except tax cuts for the rich.
      _forcible suppression of the opposition_ = exploits the ignorance of his supporters using social media, telling them rampant lies at unheard-of levels, attacks and discredits bona fide journalistic sources when they call out his lies, goes to extremes to fire anyone he can that isn't fascist-supportingly loyal to him, creates childishly insulting nicknames for key figures that speak up against him and repeats fake conspiracy theories against them
      _exalts nation and often race_ = travel ban, border wall idea, and overall immigration policies CLEAR efforts to endorse white nationalism. Relies heavily on dog-whistle racism. KKK love him. Big jump in white-supremacist groups and activity since elected
      _severe economic ... regimentation_ = launches global trade war on the advice of fringe economists within the White House administration, in spite of bipartisan efforts within Congress doing everything possible to stop him
      *Yup, pretty much the dictionary definition of a fascist, to the extent the (stretched) Constitution permits, and perhaps beyond that*

      The people in power never had to work an honest day in their life. That's why Bernie, a man who not only was a working man back in his day, but also marched with MLKjr and many other positive protests along with it. Unlike all the other politicians, you can hear the determination after all these years to still stand up for the people of the country in his speeches. He's here to get things done, and that's what America needs.

    I get that socialism has a negative connotation in the US due to historical reasons. But, socialism =/= communism. Socialism is caring for your own people. Giving people affordable/free healthcare, education, housing, welfare etc. It's about making corporations pay their _fair share_ of taxes, so that the govt can afford to spend on social development. As a non-American, things Bernie says make sense, because we already have the things he's trying to give Americans.
    Americans equate socialism with countries like Cuba, Venezuela, USSR.But, first world countries like Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, New Zealand have socialist policies along side capitalism. It's doable. It's shocking that Americans think what Bernie says are unachievable or revolutionary.
