- Once again, I’m alive, been a while since I did this kinda video. With the new Fire Emblem game out, I wanted to do so once more, since these are the main videos people know me for nowadays.
For this series I skipped one of the Alear forms to avoid showing the same, or similar convo twice. Due to the fact the Bond Supports seem to be the same for both Sorens, I’m not going to film fem Soren.
The Emblems talk to everyone, with very brief conversations for the most part. There are some gems in the rough, but overall these are fairly meh talks.

Soren clapping back at Rosado with a "Who asked." in their support is just the funniest thing.
Man, having him in this game feels almost too good to be true. They really nailed his personality down so well with these bite-sized conversations. He’s snarky and blunt, but never cruel. And there are a few bonds where you see his softer and more genuine side (Anna, Veyle, Mauvier, Vander, Pandreo, etc). The VA nailed these lines.
Disagree. “I have yet to see even a hint of a good idea come out of you.” “I’m too preoccupied with minding my own business. You should try it.” “If you have the energy to wag your chin, then maybe you should be training harder.” These are people who are just trying to be friendly or sometimes literally just talking to the guy. That’s not blunt, that’s just rude.
@@chrisc4208 I have zero sympathy for people who keep trying to convince him to be someone he's not. i think the "minding my business" line in particular was a perfectly appropriate verbal parry.

He isn't as mean as people think he is. He actually has some nice dialogue, but he doesn't tolerate foolishness. I think his snarkiest reactions are what most of us would honestly say (or at least think) if someone came up to us telling us to smile more or asking for praise or something.
I would imagine this is at least post PoR Soren if not post radiant dawn, he mellows out throughout the story.
@@vivil2533 Yeah, considering the psychological and physical abuse he endured growing up, he can't really be blamed for being so ill-adjusted at first. That's why I like his arc so much - he grows as a character and learns to let go of the bitterness. People like to dismiss him as a racist, but considering that he was a victim of violent racism, himself, it's kind of a wonder that he was able to let go of his hatred of the laguz. Plus, a lot of people stopped at PoR and never paid attention to Radiant Dawn.
@@shinyhoarder I don't think he let go of the bitterness too much, unfortunately. That, and he never really stopped being racist, just less of a dick about and less up-front. Again, considering his circumstances, this is understandable, even if it isn't excusable.
@@MrGksarathy it takes a long time to truly heal. So unless we get a new sequel we will likely never see a Soren who has fully recovered from the pain.
I guess they could just throw one into fe heroes, but that would be incredibly unsatisfying.
There also just aren't alot of supports in PoR.or Radient Dawn So we dont get alot of dialog from him
@MrGksarathy In RD, he treats the laguz the same as he does beorc, though. I think it could be said that even if he doesn't trust the laguz, he now trusts them the same as he does beorc, which is still not a lot.

That’s kind of how all FE games treat it. Maybe it’s just me but it’s hard to take FE wars seriously with all the strange character designs, colored hair, and dumb weapons. Everyone looks too nice for me to take the setting seriously.
I guess I just can’t take anime too seriously.
@@big3201 it's different in different games. Tellius has a lot going on and many impactful moments and discussion of cruelty from the victors, etc etc, Engage war is like weenie hut Jr in comparison 🤣
@@LyrinaeSings Yeah but like I said I personally can’t bring myself to take it seriously because of how FE presents itself. If I want a serious discussion on war Fire Emblem isn’t really the place. I like the FE aesthetic, but it really doesn’t lend itself to serious storytelling. It lends itself to something wackier.
3H is kind of an exception as everyone there has sort of standard uniforms but with their own personal flair.

Soren is downright pleasant to Anna. And "pleasant" is a word I never thought I'd associate with him in all these years.
Soren is nice to assets, like the one that gives you weapons of wars. (Also what happened canonically in the games. He was flirty with the trader to get good stuffs, and to keep her from jumping at Ike - which isnt him being jealous. Soren found that quite funny and Ike begged him to help)

Best way to describe Soren is cold but not cruel. He’s very logical and doesn’t mix his words. He even shows kindness in his own strange way.

Based on what I've noticed, Soren's behavior falls into 3 categories when talking to everyone: Amiable, tolerant, or dismissive/harsh. Amiable: like with Princess Timerra because she kept Ike's ring safe. Tolerant: like with Alear. Dismissive/Harsh: Like with Goldmary.
Amiable is when either : a. The army is training for the war or b. When it involves Ike in some way
It is very much like him. His upbringing until Ike found him was very harsh, so he naturally tends to be very cold and distrustful unless it comes to Ike or his current army.

I like how much Soren got teased on over his Ike-shipping; Especially figuring out the meat recipe.
As for the amicability with Anna, I wonder if it's tied to how eager Soren was to indulge the shopkeep in PoR over what Ike likes after he accepted the Hammerne Staff out of her (which IS a high quality item for the war effort)?
Though I found the most touching to be the reference to Oscar, when it comes to his cooking talent.

As if most Tellius characters didn't have a defining quirk. Also, in the case of RD, it might have helped for characters to have more memorable quirks for how little development any of them got.

Only thing she really gets as a plus is you find out who she was arranged to wed that led her to entering knighthood instead, and unarguably it was the best call she could make because while Makalov is Makalov, at least he’s not some bearded power hungry oaf.
Also Aran definitely needed the most development. Poor guy was the only one to have generic models instead of everyone else’s unique spins on their class’s outfits.

Soren's interactions here really exemplify the differences in personality and demeanor between older Fire Emblem characters and newer ones, eh? even when characters in the older games had idiosyncrasies or foibles that made them eccentric or unusual, they were essentially never as prominent and amplified as they are for characters in games like Awakening, Fates, and Engage
I think that's more just Soren. You can't tell me that Ilyana's whole character WASN'T just about her insatiable hunger, for example.
@@MrGksarathy I agree with you in regards to Ilyana. she's one of the more egregious, transparent examples of "I have one personality trait!" characters from Fire Emblem games. however, I do believe that there's a clear gap between older Fire Emblem characters--who tend to be rather more grounded and realistic, as much as that is possible in a video game fantasy setting--and newer ones, who tend to much more vivid and defined by a magnified personality trait. neither style of characterization is inherently better, but I do think there's an apparent difference between the two
Not really. There were eccentric characters often. Karel for example is just a modern FE character, he would've been hated if all his dialogue was properly voiced and given attention to.

Still, Ilyana's existence, among other characters, is proof that both types of characterization have been there for a while and often coexisted.
@@nuibaba280 I do agree that older Fire Emblem titles are not totally devoid of more eccentric characters; I just think they were far less common, overall. this does, of course, have the consequence of many older Fire Emblem characters being less vibrant and perhaps more dull at first glance, as they have more of their personality unveiled in their supports than anywhere else. I think it's largely just a stylistic shift as time has passed by, and I imagine that shift was accelerated by the tremendous success of Awakening
By the first impression, he can come off as a stick in the mud ( the nicest way I can come up with describing his jerkassery), but as you get to know him, it's not without reason, hell I can honestly sympathize his methods, more than I care to admit. Be that as it may, this maybe the petty side of me talking, but I can't stand those who roughly speaks their mind more than me.
As a strategist, he’s just a realist. He comes of as a jerk, but he’s just direct in voicing his thoughts on things. Also, most likely because he’s a realist tactician, he doesn’t take too fondly to stupidity or foolishness. His extremely terrible and harsh childhood may have also made him a little jaded and spiteful.

I believe the dlc paralogues scale with what chapter you’re on. So just grind until you feel you can beat it.

For people who claim Soren is rasist, sorry but your wrong. Soren is biased not racist. Soren was descriminated against by the Leguz first. Not just one but a LOT of Leguz. At least some beorcs or whatever I'll just call them humans, treated him well. People who have experienced discrimination from a peoples are allowed to feel some anger twords that group. So while he shouldn't take his anger out on individual Laguz who's might have not treated him horribly, I understand his lashing out. As an innocent child he did not deserve to be treated like he shouldn't even exist by the Laguz and abused by those trying to appese the Laguz. (Don't get me wrong the Laguz suffered a lot of their own descimination, but it like comparing homophobia or bigotry to rasism. Each is bad and honestly how Soren deals with it may not be the best but is certainly reasonable. He IS only human...or half human...and it's easy to forget this fact in games that highlight more about how the Leguz have suffered from their own valid problems. But their treatment of the branded is disgusting especially when you consider they're half Laguz! Like dude TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR KIDS ASSHOLES! I know some cases are rape but others, like in this case in particular, yeah you made a conscience desition to have relations with this other race when you know what'll happen take some fucking responsibility or you end up with a biased person like Soren and hell I don't fucking blame him. My guy really just said racism is justified if you've been a victim of racism, two wrongs dont make a right. Can you see why Soren feels that way? sure, that doesn't make it/his actions any better. In real life you don't excuse someone hating a race just because that race has treated them badly, that person isn't any better than the people who discriminated them.
Dude, Soren is racist lol during FE9 when he riled up Mordecai even more so and how they were laguz and how he was discriminated the worst by laguz that knew. It's not to say he wasn't a victim to discrimination but often that causes the other side to be racist to the other. Jill is the case of educational racism whereas Soren is when racism is practiced and you end up becoming hostile to the other side even if Mordecai didn't say or do anything to Soren when they first met. Soren was racist but he literally improves especially in FE10 with Skrimir and even rides on Ranulf's back in an extended script of the game for JP. Which is why Ike calls him out when he takes the hit for him by Mordecai and ease that bad first impression since he was treating Mordecai a good and chill laguz and lumping him with the ones that were terrible to Soren. Literally racism is antagonism against a race which tbf Soren did not hurl the stone originally but he certainly hurled the stone at Mordecai. What I hate is people thinking racism is a permanent thing, it's never been that way and people change just like Soren's arc with him getting better with Laguz relaxes more as his character progresses, that's why he's a good character.

But bias is different from racism because bias is caused by your experiences with a group rather than rasism which is learned through society. Say you are a muslem in china and you're culture is litterally being erased by them, however the individual chinese person doesn't agree with this. Chinese people have experienced loads of rasism in their time and even today. Would you call a Muslem person who experienced this abuse rasist for hating china for this? No the word is Biased. Bias is just as wrong as Rasism if you take it too far. Soren took it too far sometimes and he was wrong to do so.
