    This video is very accurate. I have two mulberry trees (side by side) in my back-yard and one day I decided to get rid of them. I cut both to the ground and sprayed black paint on the truck. One tree died and one grew back. The tree that survived grew back in a vengeance as there was no other tree competitors near by. It grew back to its original size (about 9 feet) within two years. It doesn't matter how much or when I prune the mulberry tree it keeps coming back. It even grew an offspring 7 feet away! It even grew another offspring at the crack that is in front of the house between me and my neighbor's property. The birds like them and my rabbit eats the leaf. I was also told that shrimp likes the mulberry leaves as well so I decided to keep this tree.

    Got my first house recently. It sat unoccupied for a couple years and while it sat a whole row of mulberries sprouted beneath the back powerline. I'm planning to prune those for harvest (and to keep them out of the power lines). There are a couple that started in places overly close to the house foundation and plumbing that have to go, and it's a battle with them for sure. They're green this year after being taken down to stumps. Lol.

But wondering if it is possible to do it only in one direction, because I would like to keep the branches as far away from by concord grapes. Do you think that having lateral branches mainly on one side only would create too much unbalanced weight and tree will tip over?

    I read that cutting a mulberry branch over 2" in diameter will cause the tree to bleed and not heal. Is this true? I need to cut back a branch growing over my shed to make room for a roof replacement. Thank you for your advice.

    I bought a mulberry tree but it has several trunks. Should i prune it to one trunk so there aren't so many cross branches?

    • @davidthegood
      @davidthegood  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's up to you. More branches = more fruit. You might just cut the crossing ones out of the center of the tree.

    Hi. We have a female mulberry. We had a horrid ice storm earlier this year in okc. Lost one, completely uprooted. Now a couple months later our other tree looks like it’s dying from the top down. Can we do anything to save it? thanks!

    So.. Dave, it's been in 80s last 3 weeks in central Florida.. warmest on record.. and the 2 mulberry trees I planted last year, doubled in size.. BUT.. you said to cut back before they leaf out.. and mine are already starting to get leaves.. is it too late to cut back and still get fruit this year?

    • @davidthegood
      @davidthegood  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You'll probably get some fruit if you prune, as they'll often set fruit on the new growth; however, I'd probably just let them go until after they fruit, then prune. You can shape them later. It's just easiest to deal with when you can really see the full shape of the tree in late winter.

    I'm in Florida 8b. My mulberry is just the lead stem, no branches- about 5 feet tall. It just started leafing out but I want to prune it to encourage branching. Am I too late since it's leafing out?

    Hi DavidYou no doubt know this but mulberries suck at healing cut wood. I have a few big rotted out trees from when I had no choice. Helps to keep them small from the beginning for sure.

      Do you happen to know which species you have? I've noticed the rot on bigger trees but they seem to grow out and around it.

      Hi David
      I have two black varieties (what they call dwarf and standard here) and a few of the white (including the shahtoot types, I think you guys call them pakastani? Longer fruit). Most are cutting grown but I grafted some of the shahtoots. All are slow/bad healers. The mangos/avos/jacks etc all heal well here but not the mulberries. They still grow fine but the their structure is damaged which is a long term issue (though they grow quick enough so replacement is easy). It certainly is not a problem with smaller trees though :) I have read that 2 inch branches is when it becomes an issue.
      While I have you here I also want to say your channel rocks and I am often laughing watching it. Keep up the great work :)

    • @davidthegood
      @davidthegood  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. I have seen trees that grew right back after damage, but I'll keep an eye on them. My pakistani one always had rot issues, but my black ones grew around it.

    My phone identified about 40 white mulberry saplings in my 0.25 acre yard last summer. I went ahead and potted at least 30 of them and transplanted a few others to different areas of my yard. What are the chances they will fruit when growing wild like this?

    Hi. Do you have any experience pruning mulberry trees in the tropics? We don't have a dormant winter period here in the Philippines. My 2 mulberry trees are still small, and I want to grow them as" bushes" but still produce some mulberries to eat. My 2 trees were grown from cuttings and both of them have 2 main branches each that are kind of getting long and "leggy". I was thinking of already cutting these 2 branches shorter in order to prevent " legginess" and to promote more branching further down the base of the tree...but when I googled "pruning mulberry trees", many warned cutting more than 2 inches because it would cause "bleeding" where you cut it. Then I saw your post on Survival Gardener about pruning mulberry trees... I would appreciate it if you could give me some advice on how to prune them in the tropics? Is it safe for them if I just cut them? Would "bleeding" from the cut branch be a problem? And if so, is there a way to prevent it or stop it?

Will they grow well in containers ? Do you have a goblet shape or central leader approach ? How about feeding , soil type, watering , and lighting requirements ? thank you so much for any help you have be able to give !!

    So, I live in central western Wisconsin. I just discovered I have an overgrown Mulberry tree in my yard. So next spring, before the leaves pop out, I can cut it back to the ground and start over with it? It's a young tree, but it's already taller than our one story house, and the trunk is about 4" in diameterl.
