A bit off topic, but Americans being pretty much the only people in the world who refuse to play songs in foreign languages is very sad for them. And yet we're all expected to listen and love songs in English. I grew up listening to songs in English, not understanding a word. I also remember songs from Japan, France, Italy or SK that were all huge hits in my country
What Americans are these? I've always listened to music in multiple languages and had radio stations that played no English music here in the US, even in the 90s. I think people imagine Nebraska when they think of the US.
@MilaTejana Well, I always got the impression that most radio stations or TV stations wouldn't just play songs in foreign languages. There are exepctions, of course. But I remember Ricky Martin, Mark Anthony and even Shakira all talking about this. How they had to make songs in English or feature American artists if they wanted to be played in the US, even though they were massive superstars everywhere else. BTS had to change their whole sound too, to make their music 'US radios friendly' and their most succesul songs (in the US) are their English releases,, even though they're by far their worst songs. Tatu were massive in Europe and Asia, with their songs being in Russian, but then they had to make English versions for America. I always see people say it's normal, because they need to understand the lyrics "to relate" but the rest of the world was always expected to consume English content we didn't understand. Again, I'm sure there are exepctions, but this is the impression I got. It goes for movies too. So many American movies are remakes of foreign films that are still too new to need a remake
@desmond107 Yes, I'm from Texas, where nearly half the population listens to music in Spanish so it's not that they are listening to music they can't understand. And we had a radio station in Hindi but, again, for the people who understand it. I think the US and Latin America are very different than Europe in that the amount of media that we can consume in English and Spanish makes us very accustomed to doing so. Still, I grew listening to music in mostly English and Spanish but also Urdu, Turkish, Arabic and many other languages but I was raised in a very multicultural community. The US has a lot of diversity, so I get defensive when I feel like everything is erased but a 5th generation American of European descent. My family has been here longer than that and yet I speak a second language, also studied a third but I'm not very good lol, and enjoy media from all over the world. I was shocked when I was Italy that I heard so much music in English and Spanish. I was like, where is the Italian pop music being played in restaurants or train stations? I found that strange. In summary, sorry for my terse reply and thanks for the convo. I do agree that we like to understand lyrics.
