    My fancy gold fish, comets, and tropical fish-mollies, swordfish,dwarf gourami, guppies, and tetras all love this gel recipie. They are all in 3 separate tanks so I've been able to observe them all. The garlic can make the water have a strong odor, but weekly to twice weekly water changes help with this and good filtration. Thanks for the recipe and demo!!

      Very awesome, this is one of the few testimonies on fish eating the gel food. I'm glad your fish love it. Mines go ham over it lol. I'd love to see a feeding video sometime. Thanks for the feedback.

    Do you throw them frozen in the tank or do you thaw them out first? Are they easy to break off frozen?

    • @MauriceMccomie
      @MauriceMccomie  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a hellova good question zone07 what i do, is I keep a batch frozen, that is for a later date, but when I'm ready to use it, I put it in the fridge. That way, it stays fresh and its not a block for the fish. They will eat it right away. To recap, freeze all food you're using at the moment and keep the batch that you're currently feeding in the fridge.

      Maurice Mccomie Thanks for the response. I made a batch, threw some in the tank and they went crazy.

    I have 3000 fish koi goldfish Arawakan flower horn Oscar’s cichlids and guppies and peacock bass and arapimhas and some of my bettas and my swordtails and my and more of my fish love this food

    • @MauriceMccomie

      All my fish love it too, I modify the recipe a bit for my preds and flowerhorns but they all have the same base recipe. You can even add flagyl to the food to medicate sick fish and keep their digestive tracks parasite free.

    If you are going to freeze them, was there a point in making jelly?

    • @TheRealChimera
      @TheRealChimera 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No Rocket Science Build
      Yeah.
      the gel food takes longer to break down and decompose in the water compared to just super tiny chopped frozen bits of food.
      The gel is cleaner to feed with and gives fry more time to find the food before rotting.
      I would feed with gel, frozen or not over just frozen any day.

    I can used for bettas?

    • @MauriceMccomie
      @MauriceMccomie  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ángel David Rodríguez This can be used for bettas, however there are 2 limitations. The first is if the betta would peck and eat from a block of gel food, and 2, bettas like and prefer more meaty, live foods. My bettas loved mosquito larvae and blood worms. I have another diy food mix that the bettas may better like. Take a look at it here - th-cam.com/video/v9JQyTSz8X4/w-d-xo.html Thanks for watching

      Maurice Aquariums How much High Protein pellets do you use. Like, how many tablespoons, if you had to guess. Or was it half a cup?

    • @spannycat2
      @spannycat2 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maurice Aquariums Would you say that the gelatin amount is about half or a quarter of the pellet amount?

    • @MauriceMccomie
      @MauriceMccomie  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Crystal Illescas you can vary the ingredients to suit your requirements. So if you wanted to add 2 tablespoons or 2 cups thats cool. However as for the gelatin. If your mixture is runny and mostly liquid use more gelatin, if not use less. I used 2 tablespoons of gelatin and it worked well for me. You may need ti experiment a little with the portions depending on if you change the ingredients. Hope it comes out well :)

    • @spannycat2
      @spannycat2 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maurice Aquariums Thank you so much for replying. I have three goldfish in a 20 gallon cycled tank, and the fish are extremely healthy looking. I never thought they would live 3 years and still be healthy, as they are notoriously difficult to keep alive. Now that I know that I´m going to have them for several more years, I want to give them a better variety of food. I want to give them blood worms, mosquito larvae and brine shrimp, and frozen peas now. They are currently about 4 and a half inches each, and since the tank is cycled, I´m going to postpone buying a 55 gallon tank until they are bigger and when I can afford it.

    Can I feed this to my goldfish?

    • @MauriceMccomie
      @MauriceMccomie  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course you can. This recipe was made with goldfish in mind. This recipe is actually way better for goldfish than feeding flakes at the top of the water, because this sinks. That means your goldfish won't be gasping at the surface sucking air into their bladders and getting swim bladder disease. Also it has all the veggies goldfish like and need.

    • @MauriceMccomie
      @MauriceMccomie  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Razor Sharp It is possible you can overfeed them, its all about how much your fish can eat in about a five minutes. So when you cut it into cubes take into mind how much your fish can eat.

      Thanks man. First off its great for both adults and fry. Oh & it can be customised cuz I made a similar mix for my discus. Only dif is I used beef heart, liver & spinach. So yea it is great lol. The music is from a local artiste by the name of Machel Montano the name of the song is "Float" & it won our Carnival Road march last year. Im in Trinidad & Tobago btw.

    • @MauriceMccomie
      @MauriceMccomie  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Emil Capati I'm not sure if it will make a good vacation feeder, as the fish eat it as it hits the water. Also it starts disintegrating as it hits the water, so after about an hour it would just be like a powder at the bottom of the tank.

    • @MauriceMccomie
      @MauriceMccomie  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Leo Diaz Thats a good question. It depends on what you're feeding. This gel food was for cichlids and goldfish, both of which prefer a low protein diet. I also have a high protein mix that I do for my Discus. Have a look in the link: th-cam.com/video/v9JQyTSz8X4/w-d-xo.html You can customize the formular however you feel would make your fish happy. Just do some research on their preference first. Thanks for your question.

    gelatine isn’t bad for the fish?

    • @MauriceMccomie
      @MauriceMccomie  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good question. The answer is "No" its not bad for the fish. Gelatin is made of 100% protein, which is good for fish growth. As long as you use the recommended 100% Pure Gelatin with no additives, your fish would be ok.

    Does this recipe safe for goldfish ??

    • @MauriceMccomie
      @MauriceMccomie  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yes my friend its great for them. Goldfish love broccoli & the garlic helps keep parasites away. Next good thing for goldfish is that it sinks. Goldfish get swim bladder disease easily when they eat food off the top of the water, because they suck in too much air wuth their food. The gel sinks so they can peck at it below. My goldfish loved this. Try it out & let me know. Thanks for watching

    When the fish bite into the food it seems to break apart and make a mess is this normal or is there anyway to avoid the mess?

    • @MauriceMccomie
      @MauriceMccomie  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want, you can add a little bit more gelatin. It holds together better.

    • @willie708
      @willie708 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maurice McComie
      Yes but when the food reaches the bottom the fish won't eat it ): they only eat if they catch it before it sinks. Is that normal? or maybe it's just the ingredients added?

    • @MauriceMccomie
      @MauriceMccomie  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      My fish peck at it even when its on the substrate. Also, my plecos eat whatever is left over. So thats just me. In your case I recommend jus feed only what your fish can eat in 30 seconds. Cut it into smaller pieces so they can finish it before it reaches the substrate as well.

    Just saw this video and wondered about the garlic? Apparently it doesn't affect fish in a bad way? I have community fish as well as some angels and want to be careful. Also, how many cubes do you feed at one time and how often?

    • @MauriceMccomie
      @MauriceMccomie  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey thanks for watching my friend. Ok lets answer your questions, 1st. The garlic prevents parasites from attaching to the fish. It does nothing bad to the fish and actually protects them. It doesn't foul the water, once you keep up with your regular water changes. 2nd I keep discus and they love it. They're a bit more picky than angels when it comes to water parameters and all mines are fine. Like I said before, as long as you keep up with your regular water changes. 3rd Feed only as much as your fish can eat in a minute or two. Any more and they won't eat all. Then you'll have decaying food in your tank. You should also follow your regular feeding schedule. Feed no more or less than you already feed your fish. My routine is morning and night and I follow that. I hope I helped answer your questions.

    Should I serve this to my fish (I got a pleco) with this jelly consistency or should it be more solid, like a frozen cube? Also, how do you serve it? Do you put it in your tank right from the freezer or you defroste it in some tank water before putting it in your tank? Thanks in advance. ❤️

    • @shawniegreenbud8691
      @shawniegreenbud8691 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Maurice Aquariums ,,I followed it to the letter..I used hikari staple pellets,and the frozen mix veggies with carrots,cauliflower and broccoli...they attacked it when it hit the water but spit it out and the gel sat at the bottom..so i tried another batch adding a half cup of fresh shrimp,figuring better smelll... no go..I think its the garlic..Im going to try adding fresh fish...if that fails im done with this recipe

    • @MauriceMccomie
      @MauriceMccomie  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jack Frost hmm that's so strange. Mines murder it. I don't think its the garlic, because they will eat the garlic raw. Also garlic is a main component as it keeps parasites away. Do you have peacocks, or mbuna? Peacocks like meatier mixes but mbuna likes more veggie base mixes. Maybe your portioning is a bit not to their liking. Keep trying. Sometimes, if they are pellet fed, they take some time to adjust to new foods.

      +Amy Anne yes it is, its a vegetable based recipe, so its good for shrimp, plecos, livebearers, goldfish, kois and of course mbuna cichlids. I won't feed it to peacocks and haps because they need proteins in their diet. Give it a go and post a vid, I'd love to see how your fish go at it 😀

      +Amy Anne I only use aquarium salt if I'm treating illness, for example ich or if I want to prevent fungus growth on my fish if they get a scrape. However, you have cichlids correct? When I had cichlids I made a diy pH buffer using aquarium salt, baking soda and Epsom salts that I added after each water change.

    why would anyone want big fish? I'm just curious, seems like they would just create more waste and maintenance work for me. also why buy pellets if your going thru the trouble of "diy" in the first place. just buy dry nutrients/probiotics and avoid the fillers.
    I think african cichlids are more prone to over-eating in cramped conditions where they are more concerned with competition rather than actually feeding themselves for sustenance. I think when we train them to feed on things they wouldn't normally find in nature it really changes their whole behavior into something abominable and I for one am just not into it... everybody's got a "diy gel-food" video and they aren't diy at all. the point should be healthier for the fish and cheaper for the keeper not easier to make a video of... show some fish
