    Many years ago I made homemade gel food for treating a goldfish with swim bladder issues. I used vegetable baby food for the vegetable content because it was already pureed super fine. It made a huge difference for the swim bladder issue for that goldie. 😊

    Awesome. One thing to remember though, vegetables oxidize, when you pick them they’re full of nutrients but within a few days they can lose anywhere from 60 to 80% of their nutrients through oxidization or just getting old. It probably doesn’t matter a whole lot for fish but if you get your vegetables fresh and freeze them immediately or even buy frozen they’re going to retain more of their nutritional value. Frozen vegetables are usually the most nutritious you can buy because the stuff we buy at the store we called fresh is usually several days old and has already been oxidizing and aging, of course straight out of your garden or a farmers market it’s probably going to be the best but otherwise frozen is usually your best bet. So if you’re feeding them to fish as some sort of a supplement or for a specific dietary need you’re probably better off using frozen or freezing fresh vegetables instead of using the old or wilted or dried out stuff. I’m guessing this would also work if you put the food in a blender for smaller fish, it’s a great idea.
    Can you freeze the gelatin cubes? Well I’m sure you can freeze them but can you thaw them afterwards and do they stay gelatin?

    Should I try korean seaweed? I used to make my own frozen food for my reef tanks using chicken egg yolks, Gim (korean seaweed used in rice roll "sandwiches if you will"), some red colored fish meat whether trout or wild salmon, and mostly shrimp, some alaskan king crab legs (when were cheap at Costco which is a long time ago lol), scallops, baby shrimp types dried used in Korean cooking, etc. and froze it. All my fish from tangs to Angel salt water fish loved it and the corals thrived. However never thought it was be hard to get a huge one owner before me Oscar and other cichlids. So would I just get some frozen cubes of brine shrimp he said they ate too but didn't make sense then that they would eat the cut up shrimp no? Anyway advice?

    Hello, I just got a bunch of very large African cichlids in with a huge like 6 pounds or more Oscar and 5 huge silver dollar red hook kind and in another tank some smaller shell dwellers etc. The smaller ones are eating flake etc. The big ones ate some of them including the Oscar when I first got them that day. I tried to calm them down after first moving them from their former owners by feeding. Now they are not eating. I tried scallops, medium size but actually large Hikari pellets (should I try smaller because the owner showed me the Hikari cichlid I think it was but I might have too large a size) and shrimp bits. Both scallops and shrimp were frozen and I tried thawing some as well. The Oscar spit it out as they will but didn't retry eating it. A couple of the African ones did eat it but most won't eat. I need them to eat. Suggestions or what I can buy to get them what they like?

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think Repashy makes really good foods. For me, the only issue that I can see with Repashy is that it is expensive for many people. Besides that, I have used it before and think that it's great.

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the goldfish would love to eat this, but maybe something like spinach or cooked zucchini rather than kale (because the cichlids have teeth that can cut the kale).

    • @TazawaTanks
      @TazawaTanks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As far as not using gelatin, you could use a food like Repashy. You basically need some type of neutral binding agent.

    • @TazawaTanks

      Depends on the type of fish. However, it’s pretty densely packed, so a 1” cube should be able to feed a lot of fish. As an example, I’ll put a 1x1x1chunk in that mbuna tank and it’s plenty for all of those fish.
