This is one of the biggest nests that we have ever cast. I will leave it up to you to speculate on the weight until we can get it to some accurate scales to weigh it. Myrmecia brevinoda is one of the largest ants in Australia, with workers able to be more that 30 mm in length and the queen over 40 mm. The nest has a main tunnel near the surface from which the rest of the nest branches off. There are at least 5 separate arms in this nest which only connect near the surface. There are also a number of features in the nest which show the uses of different chambers.

This is turning in to a world wide industry. I saw it on TV last year. Hot aluminium is a nice thing to pour on the biting fire ants here. I had over 100 bites one time when I was 12. I poured boiling hot water on the mound back then in retaliation. Would have loved to use aluminium.

I was born and raised in Texas and there are some serious ants there. I now live in Panama and spent a lot of time in the jungle here while I was in the Army. We have some serious ants here too. However, you guys in Australia are by far the winners when it comes to ants.

Aggressive, more so when you are near their hole. Some species are more aggressive than others. The also have a nasty sting.

No need to polish. If you dig them out quickly enough the keep their luster for much longer. High pressure water takes care of the rest.

Everyone says these are complex but it’s literally just tight tunnels with chambers in them. The deepest chambers hold the Queen(s). That’s it (unless we get into specific species)
