Do Ants Build Neighborhoods? / Texas Fire Ant Casting / Aluminum Ant Mound Sculpture

  • For 2 years this mound has slowly been migrating. Picking up and moving over a few inches every time a lawn mower passes over. It looks like a long neighborhood that kept expanding in one direction. The mound has been vacant for a few months with no activity and thought the rain had washed out most of the mound. We had a small amount of aluminum left in the pot from a previous project and decided to pour in this mound to make a small casting. To our surprise it took what we had and looked like it needed more. We decided to leave it for a few weeks to gather more aluminum and time. It took another 3 full pots of aluminum to make this casting.
    Please enjoy watching our video, we enjoyed making it.

    Id love to see one of these melted down to see what percentage of the mass is biomass from the ants.

      We would like to see the results of that as well. Sometimes there are millions of ants in a mound. Since the actual weight of 1 individual ant is so small I think 1 million ants will be less than we imagine.

    I love these videos! Would it be possible to use resin so we could see in tunnels as well?

    • @antznpantzcastings
      @antznpantzcastings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @CrakFacts - We have thought about using many different metals and resin to cast ant mounds. We have experimented with some of them with good and bad results. What we find with resin is the excessive amount of soil that ends up in the casting. They turn out looking dirty and full of soil without any way to clean it up. What might help with this is to make small pours using darker shades of tent in the resin to get better looking castings. We appreciate you watching our videos and supporting our channel.

    Nice job! How do you know which way the colony is going, vertical or horizontal? You have some very industrious ants where you live. Thanks for sharing this with us.

    • @antznpantzcastings
      @antznpantzcastings  ปีที่แล้ว

      @enaidyeltneb369 - Thank you! We guess before every pour on what it will look like, how deep it is, and how many pounds of aluminum it will take. We are both wrong nearly every time. We really don't know what its going to do. Some massive mounds turn out small castings and the opposite with smaller mounds. The best way we find to judge is the diameter of the mound at ground level. What was funny about this mound, it was in my front yard and I spent an entire summer running it over with the lawnmower. It would make them mad and they would move over a few inches and make another mound. Eventually they built enough mounds to give us this 3' long casting. My soil turns to hard red clay about 18" down, so most mounds here are not deep and tend to grow horizontally. Thanks for watching and supporting our channel!!!

      @@antznpantzcastings Thanks for answering my question! Just an FYI, if you ever want to move the ants, that is if they are the good kind and not the fire ants, use cinnamon. Just pour at the opening and anywhere you do not want them to be. This adds more time but maybe they will rebuild so you have more to cast. When I did this in my backyard I ended up chasing them from one end to the other before they finally left. Their being in your yard explains not using your portable furnace. First thought I had the wrong channel!!

    Is there a way to know the number of ants cast inside? Would be amazing to see through these tunnels using lasers as such. They're ready for the future Jurassic-post nuclear disaster.

    • @antznpantzcastings
      @antznpantzcastings  ปีที่แล้ว +1
