what size garment bag are you using to carry on? S/M/L?
Kirby Allison why are you so elegant and sophisticated, good looking and dress up like a gentleman, but you use a peasant brand of peasant headphones? You may invest time and a little of money to upgrade your connoisseur listeneur hi-Fi audiophile taste for a better brand like Sennheiser, Philips Fidelio, Beyerdynamic or Ultrasone, Shure, Onkyo or Denon over the ear or in ear Monitors? ..... Stop using peasant headphone brands like Bose!!!!

Kirby, what are your thoughts on including two buttons at the bottom corners of your garment bag so that when you fold it in half, you can fasten the corners and prevent the bag from folding in?

I always add in layers of tissue paper between folds. Even just one sheet makes a difference.

I always travel with a 3x3 piece of cheesecloth (each of my bags have one). I use this between the hotel iron and my clothes so if there is residue on the iron it won’t transfer to my clothes and my clothes won’t get a shine if the iron is too hot.
I always like to test the iron on a hotel towel.
I have always found that utilizing the light plastic wrappers from the dry cleaners prevents wrinkling.
I place them between the garments and this provides an excellent layer during shifting.
Agreed, and large paper tissue works even better. The kind of tissue that comes in shoe boxes or packaged shirts.

My Dearest Kirby, just watched this video, as I’m travelling around Australia, with some suits, etc. This, by far, is the best, packing and storage guide, for carrying suits and jackets.

How do you separate/pack clean and dirty clothes when travelling back?
Now, if the TSA would repack it as carefully after they "inspect" it...

Would love to see you pack for a Ryan Air (budget airline) flight in Europe. And ... that may be a top hat in the USA, but when you get to London it is certainly not a Top Hat.

I always make a point to travel in a suit and tie. I find that it makes a big difference in how I am treated -- in addition to just feeling smart while traveling.
Great job. You can also use shirt packing tissue paper when folding your shirts, between the folds and between the folds of pants and between each layer of shirt. This will prevent all wrinkles while traveling, by eliminating friction and hard crease, that causes wrinkles. So you will not have to waste time ironing. I learned this from a professional butler.
you know, I've never really considered double bagging shoes to be particularly sensible? What do you think will happen to them when already surrounded by a lovely soft cotton bag, inside a suitcast, surrounded by clothes. These are shoes remember! you wear them on streets, outside. I think the inside of a suitcase is the least of their concerns :)
One shoe bag per shoe for me ;)
But that's probably why I can fit a weeks worth of luggage, including three pairs of shoes, four shirts, three trousers and all accessories, into a carry on case.
I also don't bring trees for every pair of shoes. I leave the lasted trees at home, for the sake of a few days, I just use a slightly undersized (so as not to stretch anything) generic trees, so that they can be swapped between shoes throughout the trip.

Good presentation! One suggestion is to hang all dress shirts say 3-5 on one single hanger, and then fasten the first and second buttons of each shorts, then fold them nicely. I wont carry that many hangers.

I'm glad I found someone else who travels with a pair of shoe trees...but you could save weight/space and treat yourself and pay for shoe shines while on travel...as a treat.
I always travel with separate paper lists with all the categories noted in your presentation and more. Always have an extra supply of prescriptions in case there is a delay in your return from destination. Prescription for eyewear too in case one does not have multiples of glasses. Thanks again for the video.
Outstanding! One observation and one I did not hear, for a six day travel, I am know to carry an additional pair of trousers, shirt, etc, but more important, are the men's undergarments. Six day travel, I would suspect, suggests, 8 pairs of undergarments, unless, of course, the hotel your are staying provides a cleaning service for you. how about just put all dress shirts on ONE hanger? That is what I do often. It works well.

Yes, normally I'll put it in my toiletry bag, but a zip lock would have been a good idea also.

I’d never drag all those heavy hangers overseas - good hotels supply decent hangers plus an iron and trouser press. Also, who wants a wet shave brush in the case on the way back and loose shoe brushes rattling round the case compartment? Invest in a leather shoeshine case with a travel shave brush which has a protective waterproof case. And if your shoelace breaks, take one from another pair of black shoes (especially if you’ve broken your back lugging four pairs around)
Nice tip about dressing up getting you better treatment. I don't wear a suit very often, but when I do I'm always treated like royalty.

I pack my suits folded in my suitcase but it's always padded by the other shirts as Kirby has shown. My suits always arrive in good condition. I also either pay for having steam-clean or with some coaxing, I can get either free/discounted steaming of my suits and/or pants and shirts (as a contractor, I usually travel to the same place often and use the same hotel). And I always bring my travel clothes steamer. I hardly ever iron.
I also learned a trick from friends who worked backstage for theatre: freshen clothes by spraying mixture of 40-50% alcohol and distilled water (I add a spritz of my cologne) so I always have a small spray bottle of the mix and spray my clothes as soon as I take them off before hanging them up again.

I just recently viewed your video "tips on how to pack a suitcase" indeed some very excellent suggestions I really appreciate the tip above packing suit jackets in a garment bag I notice however the bag offer at hanger projects does not to have a handle for carrying perhaps a small handle attached would be easier than opening the zipper to carry it that way just something to consider.
Love this video but I wonder. Only one T-shirt and 2 extra pair of underwear for a 6 day trip to London and Paris?

People in UK don’t wear undershirts...socks and underwear can either be washed in sink or put through hotel laundry. I’m sure Kirby packs appropriately

For liquids which are limited to that one plastic ziplock in a carryon... I put that bag in a metal mesh dop kit of the same size to add structure and a safeguard against "issues". Very handy and security doesn't mid at all.

Suggestion: Coiling the headphones, or wrapping them around a card, or stuffing them in a small bag. Anyone, please reply to me if you have a cable management technique you like... I use a modified "buntline coil", but I'd suggest Kirby Allison just do with his whatever he'd do with an extra set of laces. At this point, looping them and cinching it with a twist tie would be an improvement. (see 18:00 or 22:08 ) Furthermore, I'd suggest purposefully managing every wire, lace, belt and other loose end you happen to travel with. Thanks for the informative, impassioned videos!
I put mine into the tubes from used toilet rolls and write on the outside what they are. I do the same with spares or rarely used cables at home too.

And I give my wife a hard time for not packing lightly! :) Seriously, for 6 days of travel, three dress shirts with three different ties, two suits, two pairs of shoes, should suffice. Can mix and match different looks. Also, here is a tip. Keep your dry cleaning bags and slip each shirt into a bag after you fold it. Not only does it protect shirts but the slippery surface of the bag helps reduce wrinkles. Nice vid!

Dear Kirby, great video! Since I seldom check my bags, I always fly with my IATA size Rimowa. Therefore, I always put my 2 trousers with my 2 jackets inside my garment bag :)

Fantastic Kirby. Only one problem is that a lot of airlines are cutting cabin storage now. I had a massive argument, as a disabled person as I had to choose between my medical support bag or difibrillator never mind my personal effects. Needless to say we don’t fly with that airline anymore. Most UK based flight operators are awkward!

Simple trick for liquids is to use blue painter’s tape around the top and across the ziplock. Has saved me numerous times from leakage

Kirby as for the garment bag have you considered designing one with hooks on the bottom corners so they can clip on the top of the bag to give the bag more structure and adding a handle for carrying on the top. I’m in the U.S. Navy and our garment bags are designed that way and they’re great for traveling! Hope this tip helps.
Francisco gon Yes - we’ve thought of this, but didn’t want to do anything that would add too much to weight to the bag and take away from the fact that it is fundamentally a garment storage bag. When I carry the bag, I unzip it slightly and carry the hanger under the neck.

Considering how you like to have your own hangers to hang things quickly, I was surprised you did not have a hanging dopp kit. It hangs in the hotel room restroom and holds most everything you could ever need that you placed individually in your luggage. I also have a zipped up case that holds four of my ties and it has a small pouch to hold cuff links and tie clips. Finally, I carry a small shoe shine kit that holds my neutral polish, shammy and neutral brush.

what do you think about the full size one-piece traveler umbrellas? Fox makes the Malacca. The handle and the tip can be removed to shorten the umbrella and it would likely fit easily into your bag. Anyway, great video!
You are so organized with your things, Kirby! How about for carry on bag, what do you use? Have you heard of Nomad Lane Bento bag? You will like it for its features. It has a lot of compartments, very spacious and has a trolley sleeve.
I'm not sure how much liquid that bottle contains, but i've worked as a security guy in the Netherlands. and anything bigger then 100ml is going to be confiscated. Also be aware of mixing organic stuff with metal objects or wires, because then your bag is definitely going to be checked and probably is not gonna be wrinkle-free anymore.

Thanks! I normally will grab those things and put them in my briefcase so that I can easily pull them out and place them in a bin by themselves. I also always unscrew my safety razor so that it doesn't get flagged.

I have recently gone back to wearing braces after having stopped wearing them for 20 years or more. The comfort is unparalleled, as is the way my trousers drape and stay in e. But will the metal bits set off metal detectors in airports? Any tips for gwtting through sexurity if I want to travel while wearing them?

You commonly refer to pants as "trousers." Is that just a stylistic preference for you, or is there some differentiating factor that pushes you to repeatedly use that term over the more colloquial one?

Hi fantastic videos again. What aftershave would you wear in a day time working environment?.
I love Kirby's videos, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone pack like this. I could have sworn I saw a wooden shirt hanger??? I've always had my dress shirts boxed, they're much easier to pack like that. Ties, I usually either roll them up and put a few of them in a zip lock bag or I use a tie case. Otherwise, they'll be wadded up at the bottom of your suitcase. I usually pack socks and underwear in my dress shoes and leave the trees behind. Unless you're Diana Ross or have a butler, I can't imagine packing shoe trees and big wooden coat hangers. But to each his own...
Any important trip requiring multiple weeks would appear to be expensive therefore, I don't understand why one would not arrange in advance to have your suits, slacks, and shirts steamed and attended-to at your hotel upon arrival. Same day service is always available and removes all this excess drama about packing. I would focus on keeping my luggage close-to-hand during travel and not letting expensive luggage get roughed-up by baggage handlers.
Wondering the total cost within that luggage!
What do you think of Optimo hats, and have you tried any other custom hatters? I myself prefer Art Fawcett at VS Custom Hats, but I'm a little bit biased considering I am an intern/apprentice to him.
I love Optimo. I've had a chance to get to know Graham and see their factory. I can speak firsthand for his love and commitment to the craft and quality of their manufacturing process. He does absolutely incredible work. But, by all means, if you have a relationship with someone, use them. I'd love to do a video on Optimo.

Great video Kirby. Given how much your channel has expanded you might want to consider rebranding/renaming since you're doing far more than just selling hangers. "Kirby Allison" sounds vaguely British and somewhat regal, which seems like a perfect name for your business. Just a suggestion.

The Hanger Project . Start with something like "The Hanger Project, a Kirby Allison company" or "The Hanger Project by Kirby Allison". Then build out your portfolio of product and service lines under "KA" with THP as your flagship product line. It seems to me you could also create a product line that packages together all the Saphir products needed for your "presidential shoe shine" series, with a branded box, and a "Kirby Allison select" booklet that walks you through the process. You're creating a lot of value for folks with this channel (I for one thank you for that), but seems you could (also) convert more of that value into more product/service lines and revenue streams for your business. Just my $0.02.

Bundle method every time. It minimizes creases and rinkles , even suit jackets. Fold the jacket into itself put it in a dry cleaner plastic cover , put in the bottom then the pants in plastic as well and wrap the suits around the bundle.
Great video! Few things, what are the measurements of your black carry on bag, I need something where I can carry a lap top and my CAP machine. If I can go with one bag instead of two carry on bags so much the better!
Next-do you travel first class? I would panic with the top hat getting smashed by careless travelers I encounter, that's why I ask if you fly first class. I travel a lot inside the USA and most times there is no first class just business select!
I will want to upgrade my luggage since most that I see are the plain black nylon bags that all look alike and all look cheap! The suit bag is another upgrade I will be making as well as the shoe bags. I have been packing all wrong, so thanks for schooling me!
The briefcase I use is a pretty generously-sized overnight bag. Large enough fit a ton of stuff but still small enough to fit under the seat in front of you. I primarily travel coach, so a lot of my habits are organized around getting the most out of the system.
I always book an aisle seat so I can hold onto my hat and then place it in the overhead bin after everyone has boarded. I also try to either have the flight attendant hang my jacket and/or my garment bag while I am boarding. I find that when well-dressed and polite, they accommodate me more often than not.
I genuinely enjoy traveling with our Luxury Garment Bag. I appreciate it's lightweight form factor. Very efficient, but effective at protecting my jackets!

The dressing up thing is so true but somewhat weird. I went to a boarding school so I would travel a lot. There was a time when a flight was canceled. Me in a blazer and a woman in sweatpants and a T-shirt both were at the counter trying to reschedule. I ended up in a first class seat 4 hours later (didn’t ask or demand it it was just offered hahah) while the woman walked past me into coach. People respect people who look respectable. My grandfather told me that and it’s so true.

M W Thanks! I thought it was crazy to travel with hangers... until I did it. Especially in Europe, you never know what you’re going to find in the closets. Even in Pebble Beach, California, once I stayed in a B&B that was “out of hangers.”
Come on men, where's the cologne ? I do not accept such elegance without a good Cologne.... like Dunhill, Agua Brava, Paco Rabanne, or a vintage four stars Hugo Boss from 1985, or a Saint Laurent aromatic woody Jazz from 1998. 😉🥂

I believe this is Fox Flannel. A pair I had made up by MyTailor.
I use a tie caddy that can fit 4 ties and it works great for travel.

Nobody needs three cans of shoe polish on a two week trip. Also, I believe packing cubes would make this a lot more organized and easier to access. Double bag shoes but leave silk ties out in the open?
Bigwave2003 Depending on what shoes I’m traveling with, I can certainly get by with one tin. I store the ties in the middle of a folded shirt...no safer way to keep them. And I’ve never had an issue in all my years of travel. Alternative is a tie case, which are clunky and add unnecessary weight.
