Just a little warning: while copper and lead have been traditionally used for pipes and even silver has been used to store liquids, they are all heavy metals and not chemically innert. Especially acidic liquids will dissolve metal ions and we know from home brewing that copper can stain the product and alter the taste. If you do it regularly, it can even impact your health.
    Else, a beautiful gadget.

    • @isaacschmitt4803
      @isaacschmitt4803 2 ปีที่แล้ว +46

Very true. This has come into light lately with Moscow Mules and their copper mugs, though the main point of concern with that is the amount of *time* the acid is in contact with the copper. For a quick coffee brew, it might be fine, though if/when I make my own, I'm definitely going with a different pipe material like aluminum or something.

@@isaacschmitt4803 Plastic tubing would probably be best, as any metal tubing capable of handling the heat, without being too heavy, or a health risk, is going to be too expensive to make this reasonable.
Steel straws, would be my only other suggestion, but im not sure how well they would hold up to the kind of heat needed for this.

For those wanting to be extra alchemical, I would add to your kit some butterfly pea tea. Use on its own or with another, pale coloured tea. If you brew that, it comes out blue. If you then add an acid (e.g. lemon juice) with an appropriate dropper, it will turn red. Nice little bit of extra magic.

As someone who has messed with alcohol burners for decades, there is that efficiency factor you spoke of. The sweet spot for most alcohol burners is right at 1" above the burner. So a pot stand is usually used along with wind shield as they are VERY ineffective in any wind.

A little trick I learnt as a technician, bung up one end of your pipe with a bung then fill the pipe with fine sand tapping the sand down to get it tightly packed then when you have only enough room to jam in a bung in the other end you can now gentle bend the pipe to suit your needs.
The second things are to do with the finish on your wooden box. A friend of mine renovates furniture, as you can imagine when the woodworm has been through your chair for lunch some of the wood ends up unusable, so of course you make a replacement part. Apparently the thing a lot of people don't realise is that without the worm holes in the wood the new part won't match. The solution is to get a disk of wood about the size of a one cent piece and put seven panel pins, randomly, all the way through so that you have a little disk to tap randomly over the surface of the wood to give the effect of woodworm. the other thing you can do to age your wood is to wax your wood, don't be mean with the wax, and instead of polishing it back with a cloth polish it back with fine wire wool. This will give that lovely effect you get on aged wood where the grain has swollen and been naturally rubbed back down and you get that slight rounding to the wood grain edges.

If you want to make a lot of coffee, but don’t want to break character. I'd recommend old cowboy coffee pots. Like, actual pots made just for brewing coffee. You add water, let it heat, add the grounds, and then let it boil and brew. Once it's brewed enough, you add cold water(making sure to get the grounds on the edges) to make the coffee grounds settle to the bottom. Now you have coffee for the whole party!

It's basically a similar but smaller box that holds six vials with salt, ground spices and dried herbs and a tube with vanilla beans in its lid, mortar and pestle on the right and small boxes with whole peppercorns, nutmegs (and a small enough grater that I still have to find 😅), cinnamon sticks, cloves and so on stacked over another on the left side of the bottom. Everything that you need to round of a tasty meal and some mulled wine.

For those who want something like this with the caffeinating aspect but their LARPs have strict rules on fire, (like us in California) you can also make a cold version of this using guarana seed, grind it up using the mortar and pestle and you can dissolve it water and then use anything else you’d like for flavor, (I like using extracts and things to make custom “Mio” water flavorings)
Then just add them to a bottle filled with water, cork/stopper it and shake it until you’re satisfied with how well mixed and dissolved everything is and then use a bit of coffee filter like above over the mouth of the bottle and funnel into a serving bottle/pour into a cup.

For future bottles or if you want to mess with anything Amazon sells hole punches for rubber corks of different sizes! That way it will always fit your bottle and pipe perfectly

I'm sure someone's said it before but if you put cloth in the burner or something absorbent it makes it much much more spill resistant.

This is amazing, I've always wanted to get into cool DIY stuff like this, and this might just be the push I need to start. My only issue with this however is that I probably would make a little wire stand to put the burner on, not only to give it better support, but also to potentially help support the bottle on top, sort of like a calcinator from Oblivion.

I dig this. A ferro rod and striker is an upgrade from the matches. I would also go for a epoxy pour over your magic emblem to seal it in well. Awesome concept might have to throw one of these together myself.

This was so SO cool. The creativity of this was off the charts, and the amount of effort you put into it was really inspiring!!
This video made me subscribe, you’re very entertaining!
I’d love to see a video of this coffee alchemist kit being used in a larp and seeing peoples reactions (I’ll check to see if theres a video on your channel after writing this!).
In a larp setting, I think I would personally be a little worried about the burner getting knocked over or something (and putting that lid on the burner seemed a little nerve wracking haha). I’m trying to think of a good solution to help prevent it from getting knocked over but still being compact. If people have suggestions or things that they’ve done, please let me know!
And maybe it would be a good idea to pack a thin heat resistant glove that you can roll up and store somewhere (honestly, those regular cheap MaxiFlex work gloves that come in a big pack have worked great for me in the past when handling hot things for short periods of time!) that way you can handle some of the hot stuff if needed.
I’ll think on it, but thanks for making this video!! It was very cool!

He could probably weld/ hot glue a little metal ring onto the lid to put it on/take it off tbh

Adding a heavy weight to the bottom of the burner might reduce chances of tipping over. It would also have the added benefit of insulating whatever surface the burner is on.

The only addition I would make is some form of handle. I mean, I'm sure that it will be stored on a shelf or something, but a strip if leather attached to the back would serve as a good handle for carrying it from one place to another with not only easy, but style. Added bonus, as you walk with it the lid would face out and people would be inclined to ask about it making for a perfect opportunity to show it off.

I've always been iffy about getting into larping, worried about who would make fun of me. After binging on your channel, I've been hyper fixated on not only creating my own character, but Ive been diving straight into making my own "practical props". I jus wanted to say Thank you guys and I appreciate your content more than I can really articulate. Ok, now to continue binging lmao

    Extra tipp for Burner:
Push the upper part onto the bottom of another (filled) can. That widens the diameter an makes it easier to put both parts together later.
_But_: Make sure that your 'widening can' is really straight and clean and put some kind of lubricant in between- otherwise you will never get the two apart again.
