as a cross country runner, spikes are looked at as a consumable item. a lot of courses have at least a small portion of asphalt or concrete. gotta say, there’s nothing quite like hearing hundreds of spikes being dulled on pavement halfway through a 5k.

@@thej3065 well, the shoes r called spikes by most track athletes, but they have little slots at the bottom where you can put spikes into, so yeah theyre an attachment made for these specific type of shoes

In the 80's we didn't have them fancy rubber surfaces to run on, it was all asphalt baby, nothing like watching sparks coming from a runners shoes at night!! 💯🤣🤣🤣🤣👍🏾
Bro if I'm being honest baseball is kinda the same especially when it's a youth team and metal cleats aren't allowed, if you take them off there's so much relief it's unbelievable. I was always called crazy for not taking them off
Those people are the people who have clearly lived with ice spikes/crampons on their shoes all their life lmao I don't even flinch when I walk on concrete with my boots with their ice spikes anymore
There were quite a few XC courses I ran where we had to pass over a small patch of concrete or asphalt and if they didn’t have the mats down than you would say goodbye to your spikes! There was even one course where we had to run across a wooden bridge at the bottom of a hill before getting to the last 200m of the race! So hauling across that was always interesting!
This is why I just get normal running shoes that are comfortable I don’t have the patience and time for spikes.I would rather just wear normal running shoes because you don’t have to take them off and on depending on where you’re at.Sometimes at practice my coach makes us run up this street that is a hill next to our track and I would not want spikes for that.
It's not normal versus psychopath. Instead it's normal versus entitled, because they don't give a shit that their spikes that their parents purchased wear down and they have to buy new ones every few track meets.
One time, I ran a 5k, I didn’t realize that the course had hella rocks. Ended up losing half the spikes in my shoes, and the ones left were dull. Shit like this is just normal for cross country, we all expect to lose spikes even if we tighten them well.
Im a psyco path but the only reason why is because at most of the meets a run at have like dirt and mud at the gates to leave the track or if not the concrete is too hot and id rather not burn my feet and if THE CONCRETES NOT HOT IS PROBABLY WET AND COLD AND ID RATHER NOT GET MY SOCKS WET. In the late 80s the tack between the Middle school and high school changed from that rock crap to ground up tires. It would give like a sponge. People would run in it barefoot.
I didn’t know Track Runners had certain shoes to wear. Nor did I know they had to take them off. When I did it we were just forced to wear our tennis shoes
I ran both track and cross country. I was a distance runner and absolutely hated spikes and starting blocks. We used longer spikes on the old cinder tracks and shorter spikes on the all-weather tracks. Whenever we had a cross country meet on a golf course, I always ran barefoot If they let me. When I did, I would wrap white athletic tape around the metatarsus part of my feet.
When I ran track back in the 80's I only wore my spicks when I was on the track, doing long jump, on high jump. When finished off they can and my running shoes.
That was me everytime, cause I grew up in a hick town where I couldn't afford spikes so I would just wear the same pair of the best running shoes I could get my hand on literally all day
I would like to hear your opinion on the DALMAC trail. It was one of the first rails to trails infrastructure ever made in Michigan. What's unique about the DALMAC is that it was pushed by a politician, not an organization. A state representative by the name of Dick Allen wanted this bill to pass so much that he and a few of his friends rode three hundred and fifty miles from East Lansing (central lower Michigan) to the Mackinac Bridge (Northern lower peninsula) on bicycles. This was in 1971, a time where cars had the major priority in the automotive state. It's an interesting story and I would like to hear your opinion on it.
As a sprinter, I can say I walk on the pavement with my spikes but on my heels. When going up and down bleachers, I pull them off and toss them to a teammate at the top of the bleachers. And when theres not a teammate, I toss them and pray. But yeah, I can confirm, I'm not normal but also not completely a psychopath!
When i was a multi event sprinter/jumper, I'd just keep fresh spikes on hand and had multiple sets, sometimes you don't have time to take them off before your next heat gets called up and you gotta sacrifice some metal
That crunching sound as he steps off he track 😬
I just read this as I heard the sound. I felt like I bought those shoes and after the damage my money was lost.

In this situation with track he takes his shoes off because of the spikes. Going on pavement with your spikes damages them.
he does this because the metal spikes are ruined if u walk on the road
