The people criticizing do realise this is exactly how Dizzy used to play it right? Maybe they're confusing it with the Oscar Peterson version which has a completely different feel
The difference between Dizzy and this proficient Trumpet player is minimal. In fact, this trumpet player plays Dizzys own licks better. However, Dizzy has more soul in his playing despite his own slight technical mistakes. Why? Dynamics. Same licks and shit, but this trumpet player began blasting and ended blasting. Dizzy crescendoed no matter the outcome of his musical phrasings. Far more musical.
is it just me, or does faddis get his ass handed to him by ulf wakenius? faddis plays high notes and dizzy's licks, and then ulf goes on and plays melodically and floats over / anticipates the changes like cannonball.
... hundreds of trumpetplayers would play better lines with better sound than him but he is able to play his lines up there and that's what people admire. he could play anything there, it's just testosteron, like people drive ferraris and lift weights. i personally prefer something else but it's ok with me ...
Yep the comment homage to Diz makes sense because this was one of the more melodic offerings of Faddis and it was definitely in the style of Gillespie. And as far as style goes Faddis successfully imitated Dizzy (and very few could or can do that successfully).
Anyone who really knows and understands black classical music knows and understands Jon Faddis as a major contributer to this uniquely American art form. Saying he can't improvise is like saying Diz can't blow (or admitting you don't understand that Faddis' treatment of this particular tune is an homage to Diz, the tune's composer). But that's OK. Enjoy as much as you can. It's all good. As for that foolish "pressing some valves" comment, Jon kills the chord changes, the root of our music.
I can't say that is true, and I can't say that is not true. I'm just going to say you never know man. Which chops like that I'm sure someone probably would of picked him up and foudn him.
@SpeedyNeutrino43 i see wut u mean though, at first i thought the same but then u get used to it and its an awesome tune, the reason it sounds weird is cause its meant to be a big band tune, listen to dizzy gilespies version with a full horn section then ull see why this one sounds so strange...
@MrTrumpetalex1848 I'd thumb you down for having the most awful grammar I've ever heard. P is so far from B on the keyboard, yet you insist to incorporate it into a word that does not require P at all. Improvisator? I'm gonna throw up.
Hey All, mistakedly marked disliked! LOVE JON FADDIS, HE PLAY EFFORTLESSLY SMOOTH. THAT CAT CAN PLAY! HE HAS HIS OWN VIBE AND STYLE! WISH I COULD PLAY HALF AS GOOD! Very few trumpet players can hit the highs that Faddis can!DOLPHINMAN8

I really like the sound of Jon Faddis and he is the man vor the high notes, but his improvisation sucks. I'm sorry, but a few good ideas aren't enough on this level. He plays too much uncontrolled fast lines. That's maybe the way I play those lines, but he should be able to play real lines and not just pressing some valves and hopefully something comes out. Faddis is a great leadtrumpetplayer, but nor an improvisator. If you want, mark me as spam or give me thumps down...
This is one of the best close up examples of Jon's chops on youtube! Excellent video of an amazing player.
the camera work is a bit tight

@IncazzatoBianco he was known for playing in thad jones/mel lewis' and lionel hampton's bands and a few others before playing with him.
Yeah, he's Jon Faddis, but screech trumpet gets a little irritating....especially on Con Alma.

that is benny green on keys
the description names are hella wrong lol
What a pianist!!!
I dont like the sound of Faddis al through he's very good!!
Roditi has good intonation and dynamics like wynton marsalis, but IMO jon faddis has that and then some. The power he plays w/ is remarkable.

Saw him a couple of months after I saw Arturo and also spoke with him, and he said to me I had to keep on practicing. Such a sweet man.
very gooood excellent interpretation
is amazing
Nevermind! It's Benny Green! Amazing. Sheesh.
Love him!
That's a hell of a guitar solo!

at 18yr John Faddis was playing with Thad Jones/Mel Lewis orchestra

@IncazzatoBianco why are you trying to make it sound like you are bashing him, like he isn't good enough?

@AngeloMateus Did you see the small group with Dizzy playing the same tune????If it's strange - open your ears and learn to listen!!!
@gobujyou The equipment only does so much. Let's not forget the countless hours he spent in the shed.
I love how much Dizzy has impacted and how far he's gone with it. So much musicality and still tasteful.
@gobujyou ??? His mouthpiece didn't play the sound -- HE played the sound. Just toast HIM!
@gbgoul i meant this version sounds strange cause the chords are sounds weird on a piano...
Certainly a good trumpeter....but, I just never quite liked his concept.....I'll take Claudio Roditi any day!
Does anyone know if this is a from a DVD that can be purchased? Thanks.
I want to toast his tight sound played by Schilke S42L-GP.
Looks like Christian McBride didn't age so well...
YEaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!! This Thruth!
i love jobs lines - so great!
What mouthpiece does Faddis use?
bravooo
l prefer this tune in the lower register.
Gorgeous horn, great sound.

Maybe Benny Green on piano?
+ljuba paunic Right: it is Peter Green !
+Anders Askman I mean Benny Green, sorry
is that john scofield on guitar?
Ulf Wakenius (I've probably misspelled it but look him up with Michael Brecker in Softly live)....
Who is on piano?!?! That guy is amazing!
Two words: Freddie Hubbard
And Christian McBride for that matter.
Boring, discordant noise.
Michael Brecker???
