CC, GU. G'day from Sydney gentlemen. Loved your colab. On a practical note, have vicariously 'auditioned' a lot of gear via your* reviews - steered me in the right direction for my children's streaming aspirations, thank you. Keep up the great work. *And the usual suspects, EposVox et al.
I use an iD22 for voice work, the ability to completely physically bypass the preamps was the deciding factor. This lets me use an external mic preamp of my choosing (Avalon M5). A lot of these interfaces only disable the internal preamp gain, but route an externally amplified signal through the internal preamp circuits. The iD22 lets you completely bypass the preamp circuitry entirely. It's one of those "probably marginal increases in quality" things ...
ON the voice I hear a minor difference, although I’m willing to bet that’s due to minor variances in the proximity to the mic. The guitar on the ID4 had a more well defined high end. On the piano, the evo 4 sounded ever so slightly muddier in the low mids. Very close, and for $120 or $130, the evo 4 is quite impressive.
Eyy Podcastage I like your stuff.Watching to get advice on buying audio equipment.i do wish in your reviews you would mention problems that can be encountered with certain interfaces lol
I'm an audio engineer (for whatever that's worth in Internet Land), and the main difference I hear on voice was definitely a variation in mic placement. It almost sounded like the mic was in a different part of the room between the two recordings. The line inputs and the DI comparisons were more fair. I agree, it's definitely splitting hairs, especially in this segment of the interface market. Microphones, in particular, are where a would-be recordist should sink more of their money, all things being equal.
"I don't fancy myself an audiophile or professional" My ass! You're that and much more. Your standards, and insight here are second to none. Well done.

One of the best comprehensive and honest reviews I have seen in a while. As I got back into music, I was on an intro/broke-producer-budget, just trying to see if I was serious again, so I got a Behringer. It served it's purpose, especially for the price, but as I upgrade other things, Audient gear has come highly recommended. I have a small home studio. I went to check out a friend at his studio. 23 years in the business, he turned a full 2 car garage into a home studio. A lot of top of the line equipment. I sat down to check out his everyday work "interface", it's an Evo 8. I look at him and he says, " Trust me, get you one. I use it more for recording, than I do my high dollar equipment". This video is helping with my decision. Thanks!
I’ve already watched tons of reviews of this tryna figure out if I want it, but I’m so glad you’re covering it too. Your reviews are so comprehensive and easy to understand
I actually also listened with DT770s and completely agree with your opinion on the sound difference. Especially on the warmth of the guitar. Personally that was almost nice enough on the iD4 to make the whole decision for me but that is only a small part of my use case which is primarily cello and keyboard based.
Thanks Gerald. Great review. I've been looking for this head-to-head comparison. As much as I'd like 2 XLR inputs and loopback, your review has helped me decide in favor of the ID4. For me, sound quality is key and the ID4 has a richer, fuller sound. Thanks again.
@@konpadelic In the end I changed my mind, because I need the other features - especially the loopback, and I like that there's the potential for firmware updates. I'm really impressed with the preamp in the EVO 4. It sounds great. Did you get the ID4?
Let’s be honest they are both great, just pick your price which isn’t a lot really, was impressed with the instrument inputs in both, to my ears the piano sounded richer on the evo, guitar and vocals equal to my ears anyway. Form wise I prefer the iD4 but then I’m old and enjoy metal and LED’s.
I own the Audient ID14 and its just been treating me wonderfully. I use a pair of 250 ohm DT770s and they power up them easily. The quality is also incredible. I never would've gotten an Audient Interface if someone didn't recommend it to me over the scarlett. I have no regrets at all.
I waited for this comparison. Thank you! To me the mic sounds more neutral and detailed with the id4, while the evo4 has slightly boosted lows and highs. Using a set of beyerdynamic T1
I wish the EVO 4 would have the mic and guitar input on the front with all the controls and xlr outputs etc directly in the back, so the knob faces you and outputs are directly behind it, would look much nicer in my opinion.
I just noticed, the EVO 4 uses USB C for power. That's awesome!! Great video as always Gerald 😁. It's like you read my mind, I was looking for an audio interface 😂👍🏻.
Donna Wilson I watched this video with audio run through an amp into classic 80’s tower speakers. I felt like the EVO had slightly more warmth on the reading and with the guitar, and the piano sounded indistinguishable. To me the differences I did hear sounded like they would be a choice of taste, but my taste ran toward the EVO
Audient definitely has the some of the best preamps and A/D converters out there in the lower end interfaces. The ID14 is certainly comparable to a lot of the sub 1000 dollar units. And the ID4 is pretty similar just with less I/O. The ID22 however is one I suggest staying away from. They tend to stop working after a year or two and overheat. I've seen tons and tons of people on here as well as forums complaining about it. Audient has never come out and addressed these issues either so I can't say if they ever fixed them or not. I was going to spring for the ID14 a few months back but ended up getting an Apollo Twin for the plugins. But I definitely would choose it over the 2i2 I've been using for a few years.
Listening to the differences on very decent set up with analytical headphones - the ID 4 seems more balanced across the frequency range with a bit more detail in the higher frequencies vs the Evo, which seems to have more of a bump in the low mid's giving the Evo a "warmer" tone. I actually prefer the sound of the Evo but I think the ID 4 is probably more accurate when it comes to music production and mixing. The differences aren't night and day but they are there - both are great entry level interfaces imho - I used to own the ID 14 and it punches well above it's price - I don't think you can go wrong with either of these at this price - hope this helps :)
- Has the native ability to record desktop audio - Has the native ability to record in mono rather than stereo - The XLR input's at the back - Set and forget your gain level with the Smart Gain function Then pile those up with an insanely clean and quiet preamp? This is everything I wanted from interfaces from the very beginning. The Evo 4 is an Insta-buy from me.
For a bit of long term experience as well: between myself and a few people I know, 4/5 Audient iD4 have failed in some way either in a few months or in a year or two. Just a word of caution to those looking to buy it, Audient took 10 weeks to solve my issue, so their support isn't the greatest either. I now own an iD14, no major issues so far... knock on wood. Additionally, I'd also want to add that the iD4 uses the same console preamp DESIGN as their high end consoles, not everything is the same under the hood.

Yeah, the SSL2 looks great. Not sure about putting the headphone jack in the back, but other than that, it looks awesome. What does the 4k preamp switch do? Not familiar with that.
@@geraldundone I agree with the headphone jack on the back. Not a great location. Tbh, I had to be really keen to find a difference. I found the vocals to be quite similar, guitar to be better on iD4, and piano to be better on EVO 4. I'm an aspiring guitarist and I think I would go with iD4.
I thought the ID4 had a little better harmonic content and had a little more neutrality. I thought the Evo 4 might have actually sounded a little better on the your voice. Two XLR jacks does give the Evo an advantage for some applications. I think the Evo wins this one because of price. But I'd be more interested in seeing a comparison with the Evo and the new Mark ii ID series.

EVO4 headphone out picks up a lot of wifi chatter, noise and ticking, you can turn wifi off on your computer but then if someone's phone gets active the chatter returns. Also the fact the EVO headphone out mutes the speaker outs is a killer, talking of which, the DACs are rather flat on the EVO4, too filtered, quite poor to my ears (not sure if the ID4 speakers out are better though?) Sent my EVO4 back.
"Best budget Audio Interface" : starts at 129usd. Just took a look at my 30usd Behringer Audio Interface and laughed! Budget is a funny word. Loved the detailed review.
@@panelsandbars UM2 is the cheapest one and UMC22 is what I have. Looking at the US prices now, it looks like the prices have increased significantly. Probably due to China import regulations. I bought mine from Germany a year and a half back.
To my ears (using a set of Shure SRH440 cans driven by an Audient iD14), the voice sounded virtually identical. I liked the guitar better through the iD4. I liked the keyboard through the Evo.
the price in thomann is just 1€ more in the iD4. I'm using my iD4 heavily for two years already and I couldn't be happier with the size/price/quality. 119€ and if you don't need the two preamp inputs beats any other audio interface in that price range.
The guitar was sounding so good on the ID4 that I wouldn't either mix it that much, I'm so impressed for that price, and I've heard the difference even only on the speaker of my iPhone 7, I have to watch this video again with headphones
Are there any other multichannel interfaces (aside from the Scarlett) that allow this (10:14) mono feature in Windows, instead of the usual stereo only option where the mic is only on the left side?
I use the ID4 a lot. I even use the ID4 as a preamp before the camera without a iPhone or MPB as the DAW, and just go straight from the output to the input of the camera. There’s a slight decrease in quality using the GH5 converters, but I can’t really hear it unless I’m in my studio. Side note, and the irony is enjoyable, I like the sound of the ID4 over the UA Apollo Twin Duo. Better converters!
I have the Audient iD14 (260$) Focal studio Speakers and a well treated room. I Haven't heard an Interface up to 600$ which sounds better. They have a reason why they sound so good and are perfect for mixing and mastering for musicians and audio editing.
And furthermore: I've never read novels much. Much less novels about killer viruses. That I really don't find novel whatsoever. But this video was. And so in closing. What this video basically says. And what I recommend also to most entry level folk. Home recording enthusiasts. You purchase the interface. That has controls laid out. The way it works for you best in your head. Not what the sales guy tells you. As the latest greatest newest released thing. May not be that for you. It might be last year's model. Or their first release from years earlier. That suits you best. And that's also how I set up my home clients. What do they want or not want to see in their interface. How simple or feature laden. Must I decide for equipment. For my home clients. And their level of technical proficiency and/or desires, technically. The only thing that matters in the end. Is, how well you utilize the device. How far can you push its envelope. Before your recording begins to suffer. With horrible entry level amateur wannabe engineers. That all over think this stuff terribly. Because it's technical. But engineers like myself don't play these technical items technically. We play these technical items, musically. In a creative process. And it's our knowledge, experience, skills, technique. That makes things sound really cool. Not the equipment itself per se. So this was a lovely video demonstration and very good audio information. He saying it doesn't make a damn. And well that is absolutely correct. I've heard all of these portable USB audio interface devices. I certainly have my favorites. But I don't really care what I use. As long as it has the amount of inputs I need. Usually a minimum of between 8 and 16 or more. Things get a little different when you need that many. So do you blow your money on the finest analog to digital converters and the affordable audio console/microphone preamps/equalizers? Or do you go for the finest sounding microphone preamps, equalizers and consoles. And scrimp on the multitrack computer audio interface device? Yes! Absolutely yes! That's because. That even lousy first generation, 16-bit, 44.1 kHz input devices. Will still retain the character and quality sound. Those input sources develop. And no one will care. But they'll know what they're listening to. And it ain't no entry level mixer. No. It's an $85,000, in 1970, dollars, custom audio Neve console built, for NBC-TV. That I already had been using for 12 years. When it was made available to me. And I mean cheap. For a song. It took my breath away. I nearly fainted. It doesn't matter what you get yourself started with. You just have to learn how to use it correctly. And you can make beautiful professional recordings on virtually anything that passes audio. In fact I believe that's what makes me a great engineer. And I am a great engineer. It was starting with all of those garbage consumer items back in the, 60s and early 1970s. YES I'M THAT OLD! And the cheap stuff available today. So outperforms any of that stuff I also made some lovely recordings with. So moral of the story kids. If you make a crappy recording with your audio interface. It's not the fault of your audio interface. It really isn't. It's what's known as operator error and inexperience. Nothing to be afraid or ashamed of. It's how you learn. Making nice musical recordings is fun RemyRAD
I mean this in the most amicable way possible. You really need a dbx 286s or some sort of analog noise gate. Lot’s room noise/hum in your mix. This will take care of the room noise before it reaches your interface and eliminate the need to edit it out in post. Cheers.🍻
Just out of curiosity! can you put d-brand skin on the id4, though the housing is strong the paint comes off very easy... and it's doesn't look good at all😞😞
I can't decide between the EVO-4, Motu M2, or the M-Audio Air 192/6! I think I'm certain about midi I/O but, how necessary is it for sequencers/synthesizers?
I have a M2 on order, just waiting on the bad stock to catch up with demand. I'd be curious about your opinion on the M2 Gerald (even though I already ordered it).
The LCD does look pretty good, yeah. Seems to have everything. I haven't tested one though. I'm curious how they handle guitar signals on those combo jacks without a switch for Hi-Z or changing the staging.
@@geraldundone Gerald Undone bandrew from "podcastage" already done a review on the M2, with 63db of clean amplification, it can handle all of it nicely. And the kicker is i can use 150ohm headphone with clean and decent output Maybe this one should be on your next review list?🤔
Afaik, they use op amp whether voltage follower mode or straight up amplification, in the input stage, because of that, they can get away without needing high z mode
I am listening on a Pass Labs amp... and the iD4 clearly wins on everything. I think it actually does have higher distortion, but it is by far more musical. Sometimes being perfect, is what those audio guys call 'clinical'... aka, florescent lights in a cold, sterile room... it doesn't matter if 'better,' it doesn't sound better.
Good! I have windows 10 x64b, amd Phenom tm IIx4 955 Processor 3.20 ghz 8 gm Ram, and I use Ableton live 10. Will I have a problem with the Audient ID14?
What if you have an external pre amp and you use the line in and don’t use any gain on the interface - would the recorded sound be the same. Is it the preamps that account for the difference in sound?
Wow this is super comprehensive, great review. though i'm still undecided on which of the two I'll go with, it's great to know both are fantastic interfaces.

What's happening booth junkers???? lol
“Hi I’m Gerald Undone y estoy re loco”
hey thanks man, i was breaking my head to decide which interface to buy at all. you made my work easy in a snap. cheers!
EVO4 headphone out picks up a lot of wifi chatter, noise and ticking, you can turn wifi off on your computer but then if someone's phone gets active the chatter returns.
Also the fact the EVO headphone out mutes the speaker outs is a killer, talking of which, the DACs are rather flat on the EVO4, too filtered, quite poor to my ears (not sure if the ID4 speakers out are better though?)
Sent my EVO4 back.
"Best budget Audio Interface" : starts at 129usd. Just took a look at my 30usd Behringer Audio Interface and laughed!
Budget is a funny word. Loved the detailed review.
Do you mind if I ask the model number/name?
@@panelsandbars UM2 is the cheapest one and UMC22 is what I have. Looking at the US prices now, it looks like the prices have increased significantly. Probably due to China import regulations. I bought mine from Germany a year and a half back.
Arda Celik I appreciate it, thank you. 😊
is yours better/much better than what Gerald is reviewing?
@@guerrerosdigitales worse
evo is def more muddy with the low mid and below, with m30x headphones it was very clear in my perspective
wow, i love your review so thoroughly on both devices
Gerald playing music is so soothing
I've got an active bid on an evo4 on ebay so I'm pleased it has a good wrap cheers
I would say ..
The ID4 for music production.
The Evo for recording voice overs, dubbing, podcast.
Which one would drive 250Ohm dt990 pro better?
Yeah the only reason I went with the ID4 is basically just because of the Layout and functionality of everything.
very well done ------ excellent production values
To my ears (using a set of Shure SRH440 cans driven by an Audient iD14), the voice sounded virtually identical. I liked the guitar better through the iD4. I liked the keyboard through the Evo.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! :)
in-depth af just how i like it - subbed
I recently bough the ID4 and i love it!
Hi, how is the latency?
@@takaa01 I dont know. It does not really matter to me since i record voiceover works with one microphone, nothing more.
Late to this video party. I LOVE my Audient ID14 ... am considering upgrading to the 44 as I would love 2 more inputs. Cheers!
That's a nice little box... I don't have anything to route audio now and this seems to hit all the right buttons.
the price in thomann is just 1€ more in the iD4. I'm using my iD4 heavily for two years already and I couldn't be happier with the size/price/quality. 119€ and if you don't need the two preamp inputs beats any other audio interface in that price range.
Great comparison. FYI the Evo 4 does have a clip light - the channel light will flicker orange when it’s clipping.
The guitar was sounding so good on the ID4 that I wouldn't either mix it that much, I'm so impressed for that price, and I've heard the difference even only on the speaker of my iPhone 7, I have to watch this video again with headphones
Great review Man!!
Audient has some serious well known qualityissues with their interfaces, especially the ID22 that is worth to read up on before purchase
Are there any other multichannel interfaces (aside from the Scarlett) that allow this (10:14) mono feature in Windows, instead of the usual stereo only option where the mic is only on the left side?
That's a damn great review/comparison, thank you
Not sure audient didnt add loopback software for the id series...
I think both sound great but in my opinion ID4 has the edge. It sounds more clean.
Can both drive dt990? What's the headphone impedance?
I have the Audient iD14 (260$) Focal studio Speakers and a well treated room. I Haven't heard an Interface up to 600$ which sounds better. They have a reason why they sound so good and are perfect for mixing and mastering for musicians and audio editing.
Try SSL 2 and you'll throw that audient away. Too bad SSL 2 suffers from quality issues. 2 of my ssl units died within a year.
The ID4 is a bit more forward in the upper mids vs the evo4. More low end on the evo. Both sound great!
And furthermore:
I've never read novels much.
Making nice musical recordings is fun

Got it now 1 month. Works great.
I mean this in the most amicable way possible. You really need a dbx 286s or some sort of analog noise gate. Lot’s room noise/hum in your mix. This will take care of the room noise before it reaches your interface and eliminate the need to edit it out in post. Cheers.🍻
Super dope.. can you please do a comparison with the evo8 or is the evo4 just it ..
Great comparison vid man
Personally have gone down the path of the MOTU M2 and/or Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 that price out between these two. Thank you as always for the video.
More audio gear reviews please!!
RHCP guitar solo right there. HAHA love this review! Thank you!
Well, you are missing on MOTU M2 and M4, those are cheap, cleanest, and had amazing level monitoring lcd
And the kicker is i can use 150ohm headphone with clean and decent output
Maybe this one should be on your next review list?🤔
Afaik, they use op amp whether voltage follower mode or straight up amplification, in the input stage, because of that, they can get away without needing high z mode
I love the Komplete Audio 2 from Native Instruments, 2 xlr-1/4 inputs for $140
You always provide informative review... kudos bud!
Do you have a suggestion for a simpler set-up.. let’s say if i want to screen record my ipad zoom call for my classes.. and capture the audio?
This content was QUALITY
I am listening on a Pass Labs amp... and the iD4 clearly wins on everything. I think it actually does have higher distortion, but it is by far more musical. Sometimes being perfect, is what those audio guys call 'clinical'... aka, florescent lights in a cold, sterile room... it doesn't matter if 'better,' it doesn't sound better.
Very informative video!
As always, great job Thanks Gerald
Now this is what I was craving.
How to connect channel strip to ID4 and need to bypass preamp?
Good! I have windows 10 x64b, amd Phenom tm IIx4 955 Processor 3.20 ghz
8 gm Ram, and I use Ableton live 10. Will I have a problem with the Audient ID14?
But more clarity on id4 I feel, also a bit muddy lows in Evo
Excellent video ! Thank you
Love your videos! Thank you for the great info
Great video, Gerald!
Can anyone tell me which one would be better to drive 250Ohm dt990 pro?
What if you have an external pre amp and you use the line in and don’t use any gain on the interface - would the recorded sound be the same. Is it the preamps that account for the difference in sound?
My EVO4 interface started malfunctioning but no response after several complaint on Audient site.
How to separate the volume of headphone and monitors in id4
Wow Glad I found your video, I was about to pull the trigger for the Focusrite 2i2, until I saw the EVO. Thanks!
evo 4 vs the moto m4? i know the m2 is cheaper, but you can't adjust monitor and system playback individually.
Wow this is super comprehensive, great review. though i'm still undecided on which of the two I'll go with, it's great to know both are fantastic interfaces.
Audient id4 or Evo 4 or Scarlett 2i2 thanks
