- This old train set I remember running on a 4’X8’ train table in my basement when I was a kid back in 1993. After my dad passed in 2018 I acquired this set along with the Crescent Limited but the engine was apart and damaged. I really considered throwing out the engine or selling the set to a store. My curiosity got to me thinking “can I fix this?” Some mentioned a cleaning / lube and look for original paint and markings. A closer look and researched revealed this is a 1957 Lionel postwar Alco 200A locomotive and freight set (# 275?). Now that I got my answer, I will attempt to restore the Alco with new parts and new paint job.

Inspirational work you have demonstrated, for those of us a little timid about diving into restoring an old train. Just come up with a plan and execute it, as you have done here. Thanks for sharing the tools used, products and methods and techniques. I love the paint job of your alco. Who can resist the yellow UP paint scheme. Stunning!
Wonderful job snd an inspiring video! Sorry about the loss of your Dad. He would be proud sir!
Thank you John
Looks new, runs like new great job!
Great job, fantastic looking engine l have a 50s Santa fe need to do this to. First off l need the manual thanks for posting
What a beautiful restoration and I’m really diggin’ the paint job you did. You’ve given her a new life!
Thank you, she runs like new again.
Looks awesome, even way better than the original orange.
Definitely does.
I have 2 of these. Great clean and repair video. Thanx
Thank you Ben.
Wow. There's hope for my Texas Special I got when I was in 2nd grade.
I had my doubts with this Alco, glad I took the chance to restore it. If yours is in a similar condition, it will run again.
So glad to see a guy take the time to do it right, and you did a beautiful job!!!
Looks nice. Looks as though you had all the original cars with it also. I have the Union Pacific 202 set. Good running set. It helps it’s got magnetraction. Enjoy the video.
Thank you Rosejewel, I think the flat car was an add on according to the pics. Postwar will last forever if properly cared for. Thanks for watching.
A beautiful job of restoration!
Thank you George
Wow - what a difference! Great work and great inspiration for anyone seeking to revive and rejuvenate these elderly but still potentially vibrant Alcos.
Thank you Stephen. These engines have lots of life left in them.
Nice job!
Amazing work!! Very nice job!!
Thank you, I do my best.
Wow! Great job and great video!
Thanks Steven, I do my best
The paint Job looks better then the original! Your going to become like Richard Sheri one day. Fantastic job Ed!
Thanks Mike. I don't know if I'll ever be that good but I will do my best on the next one.
@@TheCreativeMind your best is enough
You did a wonderful restoration. Better than new.
Thank you.
I really enjoyed your video. Great work getting that running again. Well done
Thank you. I do my best
Amazing job! Please keep up the videos. Because of you and you and your videos, I’m in the process of rebuilding & rewinding my old 665 motor. I bought Bob Hannons book!
Will do. You'll find a lot of good info in Robert's book. Enjoy the journey Steve.
Great Job. You saved a piece of history!
Again another a great video and very informative. I have this locomotive also. It came from a friend of a friend’s storage unit and my looks worse than yours but thanks to your video and the list of all tools and supplies I will bring it back to life.
Excellent restoration. I have an original UP 202 but without many hours on it. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you. A mint 202!? Keep that safe.
Lovely Loco
Nice job! The 202 didn’t come with the gray roof or the stripe but it looks great!!! I might do that to mine! 😁
Thanks Richard, its a great improvement over the orange.
OUTSTANDING!! What a fantastic job you did restoring this #202!! You’ll treasure this family heirloom for the rest of your life. Kudos to you.
Thank you Tom.
@@TheCreativeMind You’re very welcome! I could never do what you did to that engine body. You’ve got some great artistry talent there Ed. I’m good at the mechanicals, but bodywork?. 🙄 I subscribed to your channel and I’m enjoying your content. I’m picking up some pointers too. Great job. Tom
@Tomz Trainz and Accessories awesome, thanks again Tomz. This is my first body repair. There was a bit of a learning curve and it will help me on the next one if needed. I subbed to your channel as well.
What a superb restoration job. Outstanding.
Thank you Steven.
Amazing restore on shell. Looks and runs great. For it to be that bad, kid who previously owned it had to be a serial killer in training.
Thank you Thomas. I had a good laugh at the second part of your comment.
Good to see the old girl cruising again.
I am too, glad I made the attempt to fix her up.
Wow, outstanding. I wish I had the trains from my childhood but alas they were given away without asking me. I’ve done my best to buy newer ones just like them bit how great it would be to have the old ones back. Keep up the good work.
Thank you Tim. I'm sorry your trains were sold without your knowledge. I hope whoever has them they were able to take care of them and still running to this day.
Beautiful paint job. Love that Pulmor growl!
The painting process was a huge learning curve for me, I'm happy the way it came out. Nothing beats that old growl .
I collect orange train 🚂🚃. I have a set of the Milwaukee special passenger cars painted solid 🍊🧡 to match the locomotives. I got one brand new from ATC a member for a hundred dollars including shipping. It ran great right out of the box 🎁. I bought one used and a week after I bought it a bronze drive gear went out and I had to train guy rebuild it and he showed me the bronze drive gear and it was worn down no teeth at all. Some kid had gotten that locomotive for Christmas or a birthday present and he ran it to death which is what it was for. I have a train of solid Orange 027 baby ruths boxcars for it to pull. I also purchased a new in box Milwaukee road special with the steam locomotive with the mighty sound of steam. When kaline came out with the 027 big boy I bought one. It took me three years before I got it so I forgot about it until it was on my doorstep. It is such a nice well proportioned locomotive. I am surprised they did not make one in American flyer S-Gage. I am sure all the American flyer guys would have loved to have a big steam engine on their layout.I have model railroader magazines from the late 1940s and early 1950s and they show articulated locomotives that guy's made from joining to Lionel steam locomotives and the joint was so perfect you can't even see it. I wonder if those locomotives are still in use on someone's layout today. People had real craftsmanship in the old days especially when they made scratch-built rolling stock passenger and freight cars out of wood.
Wow, what a resurrection. That Alco is as good as new. Thank you for sharing. You just got a new subscriber.
Thank you Joey, welcome to my channel.
What a fantastic restoration job. Proper tools make all the difference. Unfortunately for me, there isn't any place here in Canada that sells parts/tools or does O-Gage (Lionel and MTH) repair work. Everything must come from the USA and the exchange rate and customs duties and taxes make it prohibitive.
I'm sorry to hear there's boundaries placed from you fully enjoying the hobby.
Very impressive job on the restoration! I really love the colors. Congratulations!!
Thank you MacGyver, I wanted this engine to have new life. And it got a second chance
Well done, Ed. Looks great!
Thank you Bill.
I thought all of the Union Pacific 202f a locomotive we're solid orange I never saw one painted in the yellow and gray. The front end looks so much more realistic without the huge coupler and the Gap. Lionel cheap and the locomotive yet it became more realistic at the same time with a closed pilot.
Yes this was all orange at one point. I wanted to give it a new look to liven it up. I agree with the nose of more realism but at the same time if I wanted to pull a train going backwards. Guess you can't win them all.
Imagine how much better all of Lionel diesel locomotives would be if they had a diecast metal shell instead of plastic.
The cost would be high and risk of breaking. If they were tin shells, I'd say yes.
@@TheCreativeMind look at their tg1 electric locomotive as well as they're better steam locomotives which were all diecast shells.
@Frank Markovci Jr yes you are right, I checked some of my older stock. If I buy something that's older I don't look at all the features. I'm thinking "I need that" lol
You are a true modeler, nicely done!
Thank you Denny, I do my best
Outstanding.. I remember this old engine. So glad you got this relic running like new again. You should open a business for train restoration. 🚆 Your skills are second to none.
Thanks Rich. Maybe one day when I retire.
Very nice restoration!!!
Thank you Joseph
Very nice well done 👍
Nice work. I believe a matte clear finish would have looked better though.
The clear coat gave me a gloss finish, but that's to help seal in the decals. I wouldn't mind trying matte finish if available
@@TheCreativeMind- YES, gloss first to hide hard edges of the decals, then matte finish when gloss coat is dry.
Can’t believe it if I didn’t see it. 👍🏻
Just so I understand. You can still find new replacement parts for those old Lionel locomotives 🚂??
Beautiful restoration btw.
Thanks Mr Steve, yes parts are out there. Some are new and some are taken from older locomotives that no longer work.
Very nice job on the rebuild and repaint. May I suggest Purple Power Degreaser or simple green to remove the paint next time. No fumes and seems to do a better job soaking it overnight. They won’t harm the plastic shells either. But a really nice how to video. Thanks for making it. @Cbtrainnut
Thank you Cbtrain. I read about those two products, amongst others, about removing paint. I chose the oven cleaner because I knew I had layers of paint to remove and it was harsh enough to do the job. The only thing I didn't expect was the oven cleaner ate through the aluminum foil while removing the paint. I'll give those products a try on my next repaint job.
Reminds me of my union Pacific 1065 ALCo that I also repainted and refreshed the base. Our glossy paint finishes are very similar. What shade of yellow did you use?
I originally used Testors TES1214 yellow. But I kept on messing up the paint job and had to redo it again. Then I went with Rust-Oleum Painters Touch 2X Gloss Sun Yellow. I didn't want to wait for Amazon to deliver it and both yellows are close in color.
Another stellar video Ed! How do we find you on Face Book?
Thanks William. I go by Edward Z Polish Guy on FB.
What is the link for those parts you got? Cuz I want to restore one of my diesel engines. Thanks
Yes, I have many sources. Here are my main ones. Ebay, Trainz, Hennings Trains, The Train Tender, Rudy's Toys, and The Model Train Store (a.k.a. TheLionelTrainStoreNJ).
My other sources that I keep on hand are Trains and Toy Soldiers, Train Repair Parts, JLM Trains, Toy Train Mall, and Toy Train Factory Outlet.
@@TheCreativeMind thank you for helping
Impressive ! What is the purpose of the Allen screw, at 11:19 ?
Thanks Daniel, the Allen screw serves as a bearing for the top of the armature. The only difference with this screw is that it has a tip on it to reduce friction.
@@TheCreativeMind Thanks. I recall many years ago, when I was running Post-war stuff and doing routine maintenance on the motors, I never noticed any change in performance whether the screw was tighter or looser. But that was forty years ago, so my memory has faded a bit. Nowadays I run Lionchief Plus locos.
If you cut off the front coupler on the cast model up20 to can you put a solid pilot plastic shell on the chassis?
If the chassis design for both units are the same I don't think there would be a problem. But don't cut the coupler off, it might be held in place with a screw.
I went on timko repair site and could not find that wheel puller
Best thing is to email them saying you're interested in purchasing the puller. Most likely they will mail out the invoice.
What about the cab glases and number boards
This type of Alco at the time didn't have cab glass or a number board. I could add those later if wanted
