The picture Shovlin is trying to paint for us here is doubly negative: First, that LH is not loyal to Mercedes because he is leaving as they were unable to give him competitive cars for the past 2 seasons. Second, that he is washed out as he cannot adapt to the new generation of cars. The first point is made to refute the fact that it is Mercedes that has not been loyal to LH (proof: partying after he lost the Abu dabhi 2021, not contesting it in court, offering Max everything they refused LH). The second point is to demotivate LH to perform as Mercedes wants to give the public (especially their sponsors) the impression that they got rid of the bad driver and kept the better one (George) in the team.
