- The goalkeeping position has always had myths surrounding it. But are there certain things you can actually do to gain an advantage? In this video we find out if any of these myths are actually true.

One of my favorite goalkeepers growing up was former NASL, MISL and Canadian National Goalkeeper Tino Lettieri. Tino is 5'8" (1.73 m). He taught me to be better at positioning, to use my long legs to cover ground faster and be a more aggressive attacking the ball.
As a hockey goalie main (as well as soccer keeper), I can confirm the near post myth is 10000000% busted. In both sports, there's just too much that can go on. Yeah, you can position so that you cover more of the near post (leaving the backend exposed), but that doesn't mean the you're actually in the clear. Great video!

The thing with vaseline is:
You put it on WET gloves and just a pea size per glove.
First you wring out the gloves, put a pea size of vaseline on your gloves and you are set to go.
As gor legal or illegal: it is legal and even if not, no ref is going to notice it if you use just a pea of vaseline which helps a lot with wet balls

I believe the foot save "myth" comes down to straight-up shots as opposed to 1v1s. I coach youth GKs for my local club, one of my main rules is always hands first due to the natural instinct of using their feet when the ball is coming low. Break-aways or 1v1's, you don't always have a choice.
Yeah I have the problem of sticking my leg out and it’s literally impossible to take away without training it into someones mind, no one can manage the thought process quick enough when a shots being hit at you
You’re so spot on. This is what a lot of goalkeepers do not understand. I had a Sunday league goalkeeper try abuse me on Insta because I called him a fucking idiot, simply because he’s adamant that it’s correct to just kick the ball away when it’s really just a simple scoop 🤣🤣 his argument was that the pros use their feet to make saves all the time 💀

@Dutch Goalkeeper Regarding the Vaseline trick, I did some research on its effect on the palms and given the difference in the chemistries between the palms and the spread, I'd say DO NOT. Adding Vaseline will boost the grip of your gloves at the beginning, but it's composed of a polymeric compound that will alter the chemical composition of the latex the palms are made of, in a way that embrittles the latex (YIKES!!!!!), which means accelerated deterioration. Products like glove glu or glove wash (according to my knowledge) are typically used after a game to restore the gloves' grip, but they are OPTIONAL and there is NOTHING ILLEGAL about using them whether before of after a game. If you ask me, pour a little bit of water on the palms 2 hours before a game, and maybe a little bit of Powerade, Gatorade or any sugary sports drink on the palms shortly before the kick off and THE REF WON'T STOP YOU. Hope this helps and thanks a million for uploading the video.
Yeah you're right, 5-6 years ago when i used vaseline on my gloves i would see creases start to form and also the brittling came to play 2-4 weeks after
@@vicardi8180 Exactly! The palms need thorough care because they are the most important part of the gloves. Before you spread anything on them, double check its effect online, so that you wouldn't ruin your gloves.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this but the vasaline trick is something I first heard in the professional game from Shay Given. He swore by this for wet weather games.
5’8 goalkeeper that was best in the region right here 🤙🏼 for small goalkeepers I always tell them to work on their vertical, focus positioning, and improve overall stamina so they can outpace the bigger GK brothers.

Actually if you are positioning both arms to your left our right side (as you would make a top corner save) you will see that you bottom hand will reach about 20/30 cm further than your top arm. So I would say that balls placed in upper area will be "easier" to reach with top arm (as you reach higher) but if it's a well placed top corner ball, you have more reach with bottom hand.

I’ve used glove glue and there good for having your gloves just a little more sticky for your match but they don’t make a whole lot of difference.

I’m my teams main GK but I’m also top 5 in outfielders so we had to substitute new keepers in and someone who is about 5’1” nearly got a shut out in an incredibly hard game with very little training. Hight is certainly helpful but the main advantage is being able to move quickly and position yourself

myth 4 depends very much on the situation, if it is a 1v1 its better to go with hands, but when it is a raction save close to you on the ground it is usually better for me to go with feet
Video is awesome, and I know amount of preperation and work put in every video, but there is one complain. In myth where you put ond the test using your feet to save shoots vs your hands I thinck that bigger polemics for that are when we have low shots close to our body and if in that situazion is better to use legs or hands, something like futsal goalies do, or like Ter Stagen or Neuer
Appreciate that bro! It does but I try to make the best content I can, glad you enjoyed. Yeh in my opinion regarding foot saves vs hand saves is a difficult thing but as long as you save the ball that's what matters.

Also, you don't need to be tall to be a good keeper! However, you significantly reduce your chances of ever going pro. Can be world class, but if someone is taller they'll most likely get the attention of scouts. I'm 5'7" and played D1 here in the states, but any time I went to trials or talked with scouts was told i had the skill, but was simply too short.

For the first one your diving to forward trying to reach the ball instead you should dive more to the side and cut the angle of the ball off and you should save the ball 99% of the time
Bro, I'm one of the best gk from u15 fmf md, but as all good things have a bad side, I don't have pro gloves. But I continue. I look at you and learn better things. Can you pls make a video with more effective saves from the corner.
for myth 4, yes this is like half a year late, my personal opinion is if the ball is above the top shoulder when you take your dive, top hand, otherwise bottom hand, ofc you can take a lower dive with this school of thought to force a top hand save, but you sacrifice some height and should be wary when facing a ball that is dipping, and should only be used with complete confidence when closer to your own goal line. With myth 1, how would they know if you put anything on your goves, like you could spread honey on them and no one would know, its not like they are not grippy to begin with. and remember at the end of the day, save is save.
Btw you should also move around to save too And makes it much easier to save.

Shay given was the goalkeeper who came up with the vasteline trick so since he used it in the premier league it should be legal or refs just don’t care 🤷♂️

RE - Vaseline on gloves. Don't think it's illegal as such, but I have heard that it will degrade the latex at an increased rate due to the chemical structure and reactions. I use KeeperBalm on my sons gloves, similar sort of thing, but (apparently), uses latex friendly ingredients to prolong the life of the gloves. Must say that I tend to agree, as we only go through a couple of pairs a year. He trains/plays 4 to 5 times per week on various natural and artificial surfaces, so they are in use quite a lot

Like if you are going to allow that then you may as well allow players to get boots that make you shoot with power or get a ball that is lighter. The hands vs feet is one I get a lot. I was told that I used my feet too much when I was younger then when I became the first choice they said that i was right when I said that it quicker to move a foot a metre than a hand 2.
The problem with near post shots is if they are hit hard enough they have less distance to travel to the goal? Simple physics
