Yesterday When I Was Young
Yesterday when I was young
yesterday when I was young
the taste of life was sweet as rain upon my tongue
I teased at life as if it were a foolish game
the way the evening breeze may tease a candle flame
the thousand dreams I dreamed, the splendid things I planned
I always built, alas, on weak and shifting sand
I lived by night and shunned the naked light of day
and only now I see how the years ran away
Yesterday when I was young
so many drinking songs were waiting to be sung
so many wayward pleasures lay in store for me
and so much pain my dazzled eyes refused to see
I ran so fast that time and youth at last ran out
I never stopped to think what life was all about
and every conversation I can now recall
concerned itself with me, and nothing else at all
Yesterday the moon was blue
and every crazy day brought something new to do
I used my magic age as if it were a wand
and never saw the waste and emptiness beyond
the game of love I played with arrogance and pride
and every flame I lit too quickly, quickly died
the friends I made all seemed somehow to drift away
and only I am left on stage to end the play
there are so many songs in me that won't be sung
I feel the bitter taste of tears upon my tongue
the time has come for me to pay for
yesterday when I was young

I heard this song for the first time when I was about 20 years old performed by Aznavour . I coudn't understand the pain and love of this song then. Now I am 72 yo... now I understand. One of the most memorable artists in the world. Mr. Charles Aznavour, my respects from Finland and thank you. You will never be forgotten.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I was around 20 also & I understood
I agree, and I think everybody who had a certain age can recognise these words.
And about Master Aznavour: he was one of the greatest!!!
Kaunis laulu tosiaan.
So rightly said!!
England. I believe it was in maybe 1975. I walked to the stage with a rose, and his back was to the audience as he was between songs and facing his orchestra behind him, They told him I was standing waiting for him to turn around, and he cme over to me and bent down, took the rose, held my hand and kissed me on the cheek and thanked me.....I was in awe of him...a fantastic artiste on stage. I then had to mke my wy back to my seat in the 5th row, I believe, with the whole theater watching. I tried to act as cool as a cucumber and then sat back beside my friend who didn't believe that I would do it, and just stared ahead lol
Charles Aznavour
Nobody "lived" a song like the great Aznavour!
This song is really wonderful. Charles Aznavour was "only" 40 years old at this time... The age, getting older, has always been one of his favourite theme. Merci Monsieur Charles.
Lovely lovely Charles
Unique voice and talent
The epitome of French charm
Thank you Charles for all the songs, the emotion, the charm. RIP you were one of a kind, a true musician.
He was in a lot of movies met him in London he said as a young man nobody would help him and he was still angry rip chales
@@jimreid6370 he was in the movie The Deserter starring Bekhim Fehmui.
@@jimreid6370 Would you give me a few of the film names, please?
Only Charles can give this brilliant and melancholy song the depth of emotions we all feel in the twilight of our years..🙂
how true is that 😍
Total class. Aznavour takes all of the pain and joy of a lifetime and puts it into a song. They don't make them like him anymore!
Listen to the Roy Clark version and you'll toss this one out.
You're right, MRitta! Charles Aznavour will never be forgotten. xo
this song reminds me of my grandparents, im so lucky to still haver them in my life
Not enough likes. True artist. Stylist.
This song is, and will forever be, one of my absolute favorites...
What an artist and human...Merci, Charles, ReP!
Hier encore, J'avais 20 ans.
One of the best songwriters ever. Most intense storytelling.
He was actually voted top singer/songwriter of the 20th century.
The marvellous man!
Now that I am old and cancer will soon take me, this song has more meaning to me than life itself. This will be my funeral song. Thank you, Monsieur Aznavour. Perhaps we'll meet in a better life.
Take Care 🙏
I am also suffering from cancer. Both of us will be leaving this world because of the cancer. Take care don't give up.
Very kind words from you -- God Bless.@@yazeedkhan9151

I was 15 when I heard this song and was smitten. I have been a fan of Charles all my life. I saw him once at 18 in Montreal at Place des Arts and was reduced to tears as were many in the audience when he sang La Boheme. I saw him a second time in Montreal as a birthday gift from my husband. What a cherished memory. He was truly charismatic and gifted. RIP Charles and make Heaven a little happier. Fill it with your beautiful voice and soul.
Now that I'm 70, I feel the truth of this so much deeper. I have a heart for youthfulness, but it's over.
My father used to perform this song, as well as other gems from Aznavour and other great French singers.
Lucky for me that my father was born in Paris and became a singer when he came to America. Can't imagine my life without all this beautiful music from my childhood.
Merci!
I was young when I first heard this beautiful song and it hit me hard (I'm a soft soul). Now I'm 75 and the words mean even more. Thank you, dear Mr Aznavour for your amazing career which has given so many millions of people pleasure and love. RIP - we miss you.
Many have covered this beautiful song, some with excellent interpretations but none like his writer, the Master of masters Charles Aznavour!
he was singing for me, for you, for all of us, who are no longer young ... Charles Aznavour is one of a kind ... decades ago in my younger days, in my early twenties, saw him often on tv and I wondered whether one day those words were meant for me .. and yes it was 😭
the young think life is forever.
I’m so glad I had the opportunity to see Monsieur Aznavour in concert twice in New York City. This was one of the songs he performed. Wonderful shows.
The grand Senior of the World never forget you and your vocals....!!
Impressive.
Very impressive.
Knows his range and limits.
NOW 84 I FIND IT SPECIAL TO HEAR FROM THE CREATOR...A GREAT COMPOSITION & RENDITION...RIP
We will probably never see such a great artist again in our lives. Everything is sung from the heart.
I could watch him sing for hours a day . They just don’t make humans like this anymore. What class and style he had . Such a gentleman and a brilliant artist .
France's best singer, Charles Aznavour -- Vic Alexander
Great singer!!! And not only a great singer but a great composer.
I just listened to this song from this penultimate performer - I watched him at Carnegie Hall every year, and every man, woman and child, was at the edge of their seats when he sang. About 6 or 7 years ago, I treated myself to a seat close up - about the fifth or sixth row - and when the curtain opened - there he was - the "mensch" (Yiddish for a real human being) directly in front of me. I was afraid to read the comments - but, too late, I read them and found that he passed. There will never be his equal - a great, great singer, actor and performer. Thank you, dear Charles - what you gave the world will never die.
Hier encore, j'avais 20 ans 😢
Charles i discovered your immense talent in France. France is crying the loss of a huge artist.
You will forever be in our hearts.
And you are the one for me for me for me formidable ❤
Rip Mr Aznavour
We will never see the likes again has the great Charles Aznavour

You will always be young dear maestro. You will always be remembered 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
It doesn't matter what language he sound very romantic, Rest in Peace part of my childhood.
A wonderful man and performer. I'm an old Brit but I still appreciate this man's work.
One of the greatest story tellers of our time. His music is timeless magic to stir the emotions, stop and make you think. He's a very good actor too...
No flash, no bang, just an great song sung by a Master. RIP Monsieur
Bonjour Monsieur... Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪 . Memories..... Tears..... Joy.... Happy.
As well as “She”, this is one of my favourites. I’ve enjoyed his music since the ‘70’s. A wonderfully prolific writer. Rest In Peace, and thank you for the music.
just a great concert...the greatest he would have at 70 here...till his death....one of musics most important artists...just an amazing song writer...."and every flame i lit, to quickly quickly died......"
..Charles Aznavour....
Guys they just don't make them like him anymore, BRAVO BRAVO
R.I.P. Charles. Forever 1 of my favorite vocalist.
An amazing man who sung this song with all the wisdom and skill built up over a lifetime. Nobody can do it better. What a loss
One of the most entertaining man I had the pleasure of hearing and seeing , many many years ago at Hamilton Place in Ontario. One of the joy of my long life.
Absolutely excellent. You understand this much better when you yourself are no longer young. It's a mirror of the soul.
Amazing voice!
May his memory be eternal! 🙏🙏🙏🌹🌹🌹
Alas! If I know then what I know now.....
One of the best "Chansoniers" the world has ever known. Great!!!!
I think the same!!
Thank you, Charles, for a bittersweet, beautiful song! How many among us have no regrets in life?
Sadly missed the incredible Charles Aznevour xx
Listen to him as a child
Got to see him perform
Philadelphia May 1983

I saw him in Vancouver in 1978.....I will never forget. Tonight I am listening in Sydney, Australia Covid 19 lockdown.
What a MAGNIFICENT talent!!!!!
Em 2022, eu ouvindo com lágrimas nos olhos. Sou muito fã desse cara.
There is no version of this song that touches my heart than this by Charles Aznavour - aged like wine, the song and his rendition resonates to people 'who had been young" and look back and all those memories of no regrets but only happiness to count. He lived it too, thus the feeling felt as he sung it.
Magistral
Superb. What a song and what a singer. It is the anthem of the old, telling life with all its broken dreams, mistakes and lost loves, only to end with the ultimate regret of lost and wasted youth and time.
Exquisite
And the french version is even better :)
My favorite singer, actor and composer!
Magnificent and profound.
One of the most moving songs ever to be done.
Aznavour,what a great performer!
Messier Aznavour merci por tout...du Mexique❤️
Incredible memories for me🎉❤️🌹🙏🇺🇸🇫🇷
What a songwriter he was. I like Matt Monro and Shirley Bassey recordings of this classic 👌
What a fantastic song…. lyrics that pull at the heart strings and none of the covers I’ve heard match Charles’ delivery.
Magistral
the song sums up how I'm feeling right now. rest in peace Charles, and thank you.
What a magnificent man, he's even more wonderful as he's aged. I love the song and the performer. Thank you for this inspiring video.
Best version of song that I have ever heard. Truly an emotional performance performed my a master of song himself
You should see his original version of She too :)

I fell in love with Charles Aznavour back in the 70's (?) when he appeared on TV with Liza Minelli. His music touches my heart, regardless of the language. I would really like to let him know........Anybody?? Evan's grandmother Carole Malarkey
R.I.P and thank you for your songs
I saw him on Broadway in 1080-ish. Had his records. My husband & I were big fans.
Same to me, yesterday when i was young, this is so good
A little bit of magic from the old school
Merci, cher Charles....Aznavour toujours
Merci pour tous les chansons, Charles. Vous me manquez tellement.
So much talent and feeling.
Rest easy my friend. wonderful song writer...
What can be said about Charles atmospheric rendition of this world class Ballad that promotes the performance more than it does..Merci Charles vous et le plus grand.
Look ! - Look no ear phones like the singers use to-day ! Any thing that looks that easy is done well.
RIP THE GREATEST EVER! CHARLES AZNAVOUR!
