Michael Owen was the second-youngest player ever to win the Ballon d'Or, younger than even Lionel Messi when he first won it. But whats so crazy is - for someone who achieved so much at a young age back then - when you look at him now, you might wonder... just how the hell did this 21 year old British kid convince everyone that he was the best player in the world?
So, just what ever did happen to him? How did he go from the top of the footballing world with hopes of becoming the greatest English footballer of all time to almost completely disregarded in such a short amount of time? We’re here to take a look.

On the topic, please make a vid about Raul, I feel like he gets forgotten when it comes to Spanish strikers

Owen was a gem....a gem that disappeared so fast.....in a flash 😮😮
It was all the injuries
lol
He disappeared fast cus he was riding those horse he likes to rear snd race!!
I only started following football during the season he was at Madrid so missed his golden years but from the clips I've seen, his record and the reading up that I've done on him he's easily forgotten as times gone by as to just how brilliant he was in his first 5/6 years. People have short memories.

What is “taw”? I haven’t watched this video, but Owen had a pretty bad injury that took away his pace. Very similar to Torres.

Being the best wonderkid strikers and getting injured
With the slight difference that Ronaldo won the world cup even after injuries.
@@ricardolombardini England never won the world cup though. '66 was a dodgy soviet linesman

Pre-Injury Michael Owen will always be one of the most devestatingly good strikers in history.
one of the greatest 18-21 year old footballers there ever was
Owen was amazing. He was good actually for some years as he was already amazing at 18 years old at the 98 World Cup. Up until his Real Madrid stint in 2003, he was a top rated striker that was world class and on everyone’s lips
I think he took too much of a beating while he was still physically developing + rushing back to play too soon after injuries
@@RaymarFootball partly being the fact that constant running and fast pace is his kind of game. As he hit mid 20s he continued to rely on pace only and that ultimately lead to further injuries. He needed to develop his game further but injury especially at Real really sidelined him for sometime.
No one would think that he’s a waning striker as Newcastle really invested and replaced Shearer with him being signed. That’s how much he was thought of
The thing about his Real stint, it went well, but the galacticos era was turbulent about its image.
I think he said himself. He was faster than his body could support.
He was good at Madrid. No way he'd have gotten 8n the starting 11 ahead of Raul.
I think he said himself. He was faster than his body could support.

Have heard statements from world class defenders, that Michael Owen possessed genuine pace , could score with either foot and was tremendously gifted in the air for a player of his statute..but once that pace slips with those injuries..also football even back then was cut-throat..clubs and players love to cash in..and with that he was gone..still scored the winner in a Manchester derby.
yeah his body took too much of a beating at a young age and he rushed back into play quickly after those hamstring injuries which only made it worse… but those 2 major injuries he got during his newcastle years was just straight up unlucky
It is proven that players with pace are also the best leapers in the air. Owen said this was proven in the real madrid training ground where he and carlos had the highest vertical when they run and go aerial.
On 1 September 2001 Germany met England during the qualifying stages of the 2002 World Cup. England won the game 5-1, helped by a hat-trick from Michael Owen. That hat trick helped him win the award. That was a good German team, it reached the World Cup final in 2002.
My most angry and fond memory of Owen was in the 06 world cup where he got injured in 6 seconds when the match started. Really wanted to see more of his partnership with Rooney.
Owen was long done in 06.
so sad honestly. cant imagine getting on the pitch and immediately getting an unforced injury
Was it because he played so much with little rest? He played a lot of club and international games when he was in young. Was that the reason for his injuries or were they just unlucky?
@@gothia1715 as done he was even without his speed when he was in the box,he knew exactly what he had to do to finish it
A 99 level fifa player that turned defenders into stone.
The first three years of his professional career were just absolutely insane, no team had any idea how to stop this young boy, it was incredible to watch. I do feel bad for him, his career was basically over at 23/24, after that, he was only a shadow of his former self
all his goals look insane tbh, no easy tap ins, impressive
he really was insane
3:10 Owen was the 4th that year, after Zidane (1), Ronaldo (2) and Suker (3) while they were world cup winner, first runner-up, and second runner-up plus top scorer respectively. But it was already extremely impressive for a boy who just finished his first full season in the Premier League, beating Bergkamp, Batistuta, Rivaldo etc.
Owen came up in Liverpool with Steven Gerrard and Jaime Carragher. Amazing generation.
No redknapp?? And i can't remember the ones who celebrated by sniffng the 18yard box chalkline like it was a line of coke?? But these two and those ya mentioned, they were called the "spice boys" back in the nineties
@@indianastones6032Robbie Fowler
And still smh these players didnt do well in prem
mainly because prem is a farmers league
crazy how they were close to winning a few pl titles and couldnt
Owen was the next generation
I remember Owen bursting onto the scene as a 17 year old and he was a phenomenon. His pace was so electrifying defenders had to kick him and injure him which ultimately contributed to shortening his career. The injury against Sweden when he tore his ACL literally was the beginning of the end of his career. He was never the same after that injury. He came back well from other hamstring injuries but the ACL injury forced him to change the way he played, just like it did to Shearer. I'll never forget his Hatrick against Germany in Germany when England won 5-1. That was one of the greatest results as an England fan since that was Germany's first ever defeat on home soil in a world cup qualifier.
The first major setback from which he was severely affected was in 1999 against Leeds. They didn't operate his hamstrings, lost 1 of the 6, lost pace and acceleration. By 2006 he was on his way down for quite a while by his own account. Injury against Sweden the start? That was the very last nail in the coffin
what planet are you on?nobody kicked and injured him to shorten his career thats just something a pure casual fan would say,his game was largely based on his pace and acceleration due to his fast twitch muscle fibres making him so explosive,he played so many matches at such a young age his hamstrings and body couldnt cope anymore he was to quick for his own good and ultimately burned out by 24 ish,he changed his game and became more of a fox in the box with clever not explosive movement and still had an ok career with newcastle man utd and stoke even after his legs had failed him
I agree. All i'm saying is the ACL injury forced him to change his game. He came back from injury several times in the first 6 years and was still electrifying until the ACL. We're literally saying the same thing. @@alexmercer8042
I’d disagree with your assessment on the 04/05 season. He had a decent season at Madrid. His minutes per goals ratio that season speaks for itself
Agreed
That turn-around kick is one of the most magnificent goals I’ve ever seen, wow 😯
I feel bad for the guy, ngl
yeah just so unlucky… and coming back in too soon after a long major injury just made things much worse
His peak might have been short, but he was an incredible player. His career might have been able to be extended with today's level of sports medicine
I think he peaked earlier than most. He probably peaked before even Messi and Ronaldo. He was a spent force by 26, when most strikers are at their peak.
yeah and modern rehab practices as well. He rushed back in too soon many times in his liverpool years after small injuries that would add up
On ps2 PES4, he was a speed demon! His acceleration was unmatched.
Him R9 on the game gave advantage if you choose Madrid.
I think i use to customize their formation to get all the attacking talent on the pitch 🤯
i used to play with him on that exact game..(also still my fav football game)
he was so good...and i used to dribble around my mate so badly and score for fun againts him..until he descover how to injury a player...he will injure me twice then owen will be slow...and theird time the game asks me to subs him out LUL
PS1 Fifa 99-01 👀
damn now that is an OG game right there 😂🔥
Tore his hamstring, then did his knee, went from being a pacey striker who played deep off the shoulder of the last defender, to being a player who had ltd mobility and re established himself as a fox in the box. He was never going to recapture his previous ability at the top level, so he evolved to utilise his positional sense and finishing accuracy, if he’d never been world class, he’d never have been able to continue at the highest level as long as he did.
Despite what FIFA wants to believe, I think heading the ball without a helmet causes brain damage. I suspect Michael may have suffered sub- clinical brain damage from heading the ball. And slowed that incredible edge and turn of speed he had, while others stood still. He is still one of my few "greats".
Played to many games when he was young and rushed back to many times from injuries. Had he been looked after he would have had much more success.
How do you know that
yeah he definitely rushed too soon after his initiao broken foot. just sad overall but ofc players want to play as soon as possible
There was a feeling at the time that Liverpool did not rest him properly and rushed him back from injury too quickly. Man United youngsters of that era enjoyed long careers: Giggs, Scholes, Neville, and Beckham.
Career decimated by injuries!!! In his prime he was probably the best young English striker I can remember in 30 years.
What a striker. Imagine if Liverpool had looked after him as pep did with foden instead of flogging him to death.
yeah he would definitely be playing better for longer with modern rehab. he rushed into play after injuries too often
@@RaymarFootball Liverpool took the best care of him they knew how. Sports science and particularly everything around injury and load were simply not known at the time. We take it for granted today that young players shouldn't play too many minutes and that overall load and sprints need to be closely monitored because injury drastically increases chances of further injury, both in terms of getting a repeat of the same injury and additional injuries elsewhere as biomechanics change to adapt to an injury and place load on other parts. A big part of the reason we know that, particularly the former, is the cautionary tale of Owen. He played in the days when players had only just stopped drinking themselves under the table at every opportunity (in England at least), and if you were a proper footballer, you declared yourself fit the moment you could reasonably move about. We know better now, but not then. Even so, no amount of sports science and being careful can avoid these sorts of things all the time, just reduce some risks. Look at Eden Hazard. Yes, he hasn't helped himself at times, but his body absolutely gave out on him and it's not as if having a few steaks and being a few pounds over just blows your body up (if it were the case, I'd be in a wheelchair).
I used to buy him back in LMA manager 2001, he scored 75 goals one season in the league, champs league and FA cup.
He scored 50 goals in the league alone.
insane numbers 😂
Sounds like Pato, his body was pushed to the limit before it properly developed at teenager
thats true. also lack of modern rehab practices too
Pato is a good shout! I forgot about him.
He was absolutely brilliant in those first years at Milan, I thiught he's a absolute future world star. But then the injuries started and basically destroyed him before his mid 20s.
I remember in 1995 playing in a Nordic youth championship in Sweden, where England also were participating. We were staying in the same hotel as them but were unfortunately not in the same group as them, so I did not get to play against them. Many of our players were big Liverpool fans, so they got quite disappointed when they found out that there was only one player from Liverpool and he was this small skinny kid. But they ended up winning the tournament and the small skinny kid ended as player of the tournament and top scorer.
Man Owen was by far my favorite player in the world at the time.
I've only had two favorite players in my life time, Michael Owen, and Crisiano Ronaldo.
Guy was insane but the injuries destroyed him.
He had such blistering pace and amazing goal instincts.
just lack of modern rehab practices was also a huge factor. rushed back in too soon after those liverpool injuries which would add up
To be fair about his time with Real Madrid, he was consistently being played from the bench around the 60th or 70th minute and above, which does affect his goal-scoring stats (which is still respectable considering he still scored double-figures as a super sub).
Still, the team was already too star-studded, plus he was already known to be injury prone at the time, so he had to see it coming.
politics in madrid fuked him up...i still remeber raul was so shit at that time and owen would play 1/4 the minutes he had and still score more than him....
@@majd2 Yea, I felt a bit sorry for him at Madrid, but he ultimately decided he still wanted to go there for trophies.
yeah most efficient player per minutes played on the squad but madrid just wanted to dump him
Unbelievable to think how good he was at such a young age, but his success couldn’t be replicated after leaving Liverpool. What a shame
Its stories like this that make you appreciate Messi and Ronaldo even more. Hope we get to add Bellingham to the list too
Factsss
Such a shame that Owen missed out the historic Champions League victory with Liverpool (Miracle of Istanbul) when he left for Real Madrid in Summer 2004, then somehow ruined his own career completely with catastrophic injuries, especially that one during England vs Sweden at the 2006 World Cup, after which FA blames Newcastle United for selecting him while being unfit enough due to the injuries.
yeah its sad… even in liverpool he was rushed in too quickly after his minor injuries and it all adds up
One of the best most prolific strikers I've ever watched Micheal Owen
the greatest strength of owen is his technique to run behind defender (break offside trap) like inzanghi, and his instinct to finish the goal. It is very apparent when he gets older and slower, u can can see him not losing these 2 skillsets.
He had some similarities to Inzaghi, yes they both played off the shoulder wonderfully, but Inzaghi was more of the pure poacher, playing off the shoulder with a small burst of speed and his finishing was as clinical as it got from anywhere in the box. Literally half a chance and he would score. He would spend an entire game getting constantly caught offside, then have one chance where he wasn't and it would be a goal.
Where as Owen was a lethal finisher and played off the shoulder, but he could do it from further out because he was lightning quick, defenders rarely caught him. So he was a devastating player to have on the break. Where as Inzaghi was better in shorter spaces. But Owen also had much more ability to beat a man compared to Inzaghi too. If Owen was isolated against a defender or 2 he would often drive at them and beat them with ease.
Owen was the best player in the world! I haven't seen a player his age that was that good in my lifetime
Agreed, the number of, and different types of goals, with such a high level of technique and composure was amazing for a player so young. His pace was very much an asset but he much more than just pace, the types of goals showed that.
Owen pre injury was incredible .. he actually had a great scoring record in Madrid but they were a mess when he was there
Some real harsh comments on here without any nuance. Owen was a phenom and unplayable as a child ; *'Solid' technique...but super- fast, great footballing IQ / positioning and SUPREME finishing = prime Michael Owen* . Ultimately, he was simply too fast for his leg muscles to cope (just like R9) and you can't do anything about that. N.B. Perhaps modern sports surgery would have repaired his hamstrings better and given him an added 3 -4 peak years.
his body took too much of a toll while he was still a teen and poor recovery/rehab compared to modern standards honestly
@@RaymarFootball Firstly, respect for your work, my man! : ) That said, Owen didn't have too many injury problems - before the greater demands of becoming a full pro - and had played a lot of games by then. I truly put it mostly down to most people's physiology can't handle that level of speed / movement. But yes, treatment standard back then (when he began having problems) sadly wasn't as good as now. Beware though ...look how Ansu Fati's career was still badly compromised even today...
While watching raymar videos just take a comfortable seat , one big glass of beer and head phones .. Classic background music and ideal voice .. ❤❤

owen in his prime before his hamstring injuries was phenomenal. His performance against any club was top quality. or any national team. he could finnish, dribble and had serious pace and also an excellent touch. he could create angles in tight space not every striker could
As a Liverpool fan his knees were made of glass
Nah Glass is stronger than his knees. His knees are more like made of pretzels
Only because Liverpool flogged him to death at 17. Imagine if hed been looked after like foden.
@@162tsb7 fair enough
As a UTD fan I agree
No. He was just straining them more than anyone else + being barely out of puberty and carrying the attack on his back
I dont know how the hell he was even able to run wearing those old umbro steel studs, each boot weighed like 15 lbs.
Those heavy boots caused him to put extra effort into running, which took toll on his hamstrings.
never thought about this.. modern boots and rehab/flexibility training would have changed his career
I am a United fan but Michael Owen was my favorite Premier League player back then. I liked him so much that I wanted him to score against any team he was playing against.
in my humble opinion prime micheal owen and prime brazilian ronaldo are the best two strikers ever, both blessed with those fast twitched muscle fibres in their legs that made their change of pace and top speed literally unstoppable for a short period, unfortunately that explosiveness was their ultimate downfall as their bodies couldnt keep up,they had played so many games so young that their bodies burnt out fairly young,it would be great to see them nowadays with the advances in sport science and recovery of the body, there is a great interview on sky sports i think it is where owen breaks down his career and laments the fact that at newcastle man utd and stoke he had to basically change his whole game because his body was just unable to make the runs that he would want to make,he had to just become a fox in the box with clever movement to get goals and not his previous explosive unstoppable self, and he still actually had a decent goal return when he played despite his hamstrings giving out at basically 24 ish
He was an amazing player with so much speed and a great finish but the injuries killed his career.
That red card was ridiculous, what a flop from whoever Beckham kicked
😂😂😂 I’ve seen much worse with no cards
They had to cripple England somehow. And did.
He scored over 30 goals that season, and won 4 trophies!
Ngl I think he would have won another ballon dor if he stayed healthy and potentially won that UCL with Liverpool. Just unfortunate how his body gave up at such a young age after so many injuries and not enough rehab
Should've never left Liverpool for Madrid. That's where is career crashed. At that time tho Madrid were signing all the top players in football. He was a very good player
i remember his ACL injury picture by picture to this day. what a sad day for football
Owen in reality is what today's British media portray Bukayo Saka, Rashford, Sancho to be😂. Except that he actually made his place briefly amongst Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Raul, Zidane, Figo, Maldini, Henry, del Piero.
Imagine if the injuries never happened...England would have had him AND a prime Rooney up front
just wasnt meant to be unfortunately…
Michael Owen probably would have been the goat if only he realised his potential.
it was mostly injuries and rushing too soon to play again tbh
Can't remember where I read this, I'm sure but one sports journalist claimed Owen may have suffered from congenitally-weak hamstrings - because his father (a former player himself) was also plagued with hamstring injuries during his career.
respect, young owen looked like the best player in the world ngl
yup, I still think either Kahn or Raul shouldve won the ballon dor tho. But if Owen stayed healthy he would have definitely won one in a different year
Zidane wasn’t the unquestionable best player in the world .. R9 was still the best.. but injured…
He is one of da best English playas
he definitely was
Owen is an amazing player his finishing was incredible.
he was so composed too
Every thought it wasn't his speed that injured him but the ammount of brutal tackles he recieved?
All great strikers get that from nasty defenders and nasty managers. Maradona assumed that they were all trying to cripple him - and he was right!
With modern sports science there's no telling where this guy would be. The training and conditioning methods have substantially improved. Maybe he would have way less injuries
yeah he would have definitely had more longevity with modern practices
Shame he was injury prone. Would've been a legend of the game world wide if not
burnt his body out while he was young and rushed back in too soon after injuries… sad overall
Best teenage footballer in history. No debate.
I think Pele would have A LOT to say about that.
Kids today won’t understand how good Owen actually, injuries hurt him big time.
It’s often a sad reality that those who shine brightest also burn the fastest. Unfortunate he suffered so many injuries
yup especially the ones at newcastle
...Despite all of that, Owen gave me my first football idol & bunch of memories! YNWA!!!
Such a shame he's not remembered as a true Liverpool legend which he should've been. If only he hadn't signed for United

The title and thumbnail is so disrespectful. Owen was class at his peak. He didn’t trick anyone. You probably aren’t old enough to have seen what a phenomenon he was.
Maybe you say this in the video but the thumbnail put me off watching it.
One of the best teenagers I've ever seen, Liverpool handled his injury badly and he was finished by 25
In his prime before injury, owen is the real wonderkid and prodigy...
The way you repeatedly say he « convinced » everyone he was the best player in the world really makes it feel like it was not deserved, but between 18 and 21, he WAS one of the best winger in the world with zero doubt
The injuries killed his career, but it never was a matter of skills or level, he really was that good
The best England striker that never was. One of the best young strikers alongside Ronaldo, Pele, and Pato.
He deserved it,he was on another level as rio always says.
His style of play broke him by a lot of injuries since just turn 24-25 years old of age, and never come back for good.
Working do hard and then lose everything from just injuries, happened with eden, neymar, owne etc. I think becoming a footballer is very risky like u can lose everything with just few injuries. Can you even avoid them?
Neymar hasn’t lost his skill or production though. Last year he had 18 goals and 18 assists in like 28-30 matches
yeah man it’s just how it is, some are more avoidable ofc. Owen rushed back in too soon after injury that was a huge factor too
I'd suspect it's because the negligence of the manager and the greed of his agent, nobody really cares about Owen as a person, they just want him to contribute to the team or monetise him as much as they can.
yup. rushing too soon into play after injuries and letting a teenager use his body too much

@@RaymarFootball great video by the way
He was devastating at a young age, can't remember what the competition was doing at that time but he was certainly one of the most dangerous strikers in the world at the time he won this. The injuries were ridiculous though, he once - and I forget the name of the actual injury - he once managed to detach part of his shin from his leg by stretching for the ball. Might have been against Arsenal. As good as he was at a very young age though, Robbie Fowler was better. Pushing prime Alan Shearer for the golden boot in his 1st full season. Same deal, injuries did for him.
I remember that ACL, it looked like just a little over stretched knee. It was wild.
I am pretty sure u have reposted this video with some little tweaks
Believe it or not, a friend of mine who was Argentina fan, said that Owen's career would end soon because he was only fast and relied heavily on pace, not skill like R9 or Henry. Of course I laughed at him and this was in 2000-2001. Hated it that his baseless prediction turned out to be true.
Raul was robbed in 2001, Zidane was robbed in 2000. Raul is super underrated outside of Spain.
Speed is a curse. He said it himself, same thing with Sturridge your muscles can either handle it or they can't.
I remember watching that Leeds game with my cousin, when Owen's hamstring went I said to him, he won't be the same again
you were unfortunately right…
@RaymarFootball yeah I know, what got me was nobody touched him his leg just went, I saw a similar thing at school about a year before Owen's injury, I was on the rugby team and one of our wingers was running down the wing in training, then while running with no one near him he just started screaming and collapsed in a heap on the floor, same injury as Owen, he came back a few months later but was never the same again, when my cousin asked me "why do you think that?" I said "it looked like what happened to Bryn at school" it's a horrible injury
The only people that have bad things to say about him are the ones who didn't witness his breakthrough
Yes I remember and they played him on the left wing when he was a striker.
he was just too fast 💨
@@RaymarFootball yes but he wasnt a left winger, Madrid played him out of position because they had too many superstar players.
finishing behind fricking zizou at 19 is WILDDDDDDDDDD AS HELLLLLLLLLLL
same thing happened with R9,his knees couldnt handle his speed
I think doing step overs is a vital factor. Each step over is an additional stress to the knee. And if the foot isn't plant straight, it ruins your knee. And he is the king of step overs.
@@StandardEnglish definitely, but owen didn't do much stepovers he was concentrated on his speed like R9 but yea R9 did stepovers and thats what destroyed his knees.......FOR ME owen was reminiscent of R9 with his speed/skills
Both such unfortunate injuries
Am I actually the only one who thinks Raul deserved it that year? Nonetheless great video raymar as always
Actually it's kinda weird that he actually won it with those trophies😅
You definitely aren’t 😂 But Kahn also had an insane season as well. English hype imo
Absolutely agree with you, Owen was riding the English hype train and any of Raul, Kahn, or Beckham were more deserving. People confused "best upcoming young player" with "best player in the world" and there was a huge PL bias.
@@RaymarFootballover 30 goals and 5 trophies…yeah, English hype🤦🏻♂️
Owen deserved it He had a great season winning 5 trophies in the calendar year and scoring more than 30 goals (impressive pre-Messi/Ronaldo era.) He basically won Liverpool the FA cup on his own and scored 2 in the UEFA cup final. If I recall this is when people were also going mad over his hat-trick against Germany in the famous 5-1 game.
I’ve no idea what sort of season the runners up had but clearly Raul and Oliver Kahn are legendary players something which in the end can’t be said for Owen.
The hype around Owen at this time was like R9 levels, everyone thought he was going to be the greatest player of his generation. Unfortunately for him he peaked way too early, injuries came and he made some poor transfer choices. Liverpool fans don’t like him, other fans don’t really respect him either and he’s basically a meme now. I think that why it seems weird he won this award but yeah it can’t be overstated how much potential he had in 2001.
To this day, many people still don't understand why!? He was never a consensual player, he was just a good player! Currently there are even better British players than him like Phil Foden Harry Kane. This life is truly a mystery.
Great work Raymar
Michael Owen and Emile Heskey 🐐
And Robbie Fowler.
underrated combo
Injures is what ruined him. His 1st Injury took all his speed away from him and he was never the same
