this is my favorite of the Ballades, if not my favorite Chopin. This piece tells the story of life. Everything that is in a good story is here - love, heartbreak, epiphany, tragic death, irreparable loss, betrayal....everything. What a masterpiece.
I listened to this today in commemoration of Chopin's life. His anniversary, October 17, is a date I will remember every year. Rest in eternal peace, great maestro.

To me this feels like a person trying to hold his cocktail of grief, pain and anger behind a smiling face, there are times those emotions leaking out but somehow the person manages to contain it, while knowing that everytime he tries to do so the emotions grow stronger. Then finally some day he can no longer bear holding them down, letting everything burst out of his chest uncontrollably as he breaks down in tears.
I’m happy to be learning this, very much an adventure; and definitely not a piece for amateurs. This piece’s first section teaches me to be patient, the second section teaches me to be controlled, the development teaches me to relax and watch the music go, the coda teaches me to let it all out, and to keep going.
He performed another interpretation where it sounds with an "arpeggio" and double tap on the first note, making the final section sound more melodic and dramatic.

Number #4 by far beats all of the others But I will try to describe them Ballade 1: Light blue. This one is the most romantic because of it's deep feelings behind it. It's a story being told from your perspective, the perspective of the pianist. Ballade 2: This one is tricky. I think of this one as the most evil one. The start dosent tell you where you are until you get the F major chord. Then 2:10 starts and you understand what was behind the mask. Unable to hide what's underneath the mask anymore it stops at 3:20 ( it's like why show major if you already know what's coming) and confesses it's true intentions at 4:08 What fallows is the reality of the situation. Ballade 3: yellow. Basically the story of a mermaid. You hear the ocean, waves etc. There's this sense of adventure and danger. Almost at the end we get the a storm (basically the climax). The conclusion of the ballade is pure joy and sunshine. Ballade 4: Dark blue almost violet. If ballade 1 is a story this is a novel. Wailing, pain, no hope, only darkness. This is done with only the most ingenious counterpoint, structure and piano technique.

I hadn't even realized that I'd subconciously assigned colours until I realized that yours seemed off to me. Obviously, there aren't any 'right' or 'wrong' colours for these ofc😂. To me ballade 1 is electric yellow (mostly), 2 varies from light to deep aqua, 3 is red/blue and 4 is shiny black in the f minor sections and orange in the d flat major sections. I agree that the 4th is by far the best. What's your favorite part? Mine's is from that section leading up to the climax in d flat major section near the end with those rich arpeggios to the start of the coda.
It is brilliant, like the other ballades, but the coda really sets it apart as it is about a physical as opposed to emotional struggle. Still one of the most difficult piano pieces in the world, as it requires an interpretative mind, etc.
I'm learning this song for my LT exam and competions, but this masterpiece is sooooo difficult for me...... lets see half a year later, what can I have😢(worrying)

Strangely enough it ends in A minor. I've never really seen an ending on the major third minor before.
