I’m 74 yrs. old, been a classical music lover since my teens, and a Gould fan since my 20’s. I adore Beethoven. When the two are merged it’s pure magic. Surprisingly enough I have not heard this recording till today when I stumbled on it on Utube. Breathtaking!!! The cadenza in the first movement was a complete surprise to me and what a wonderful gift. I am in heaven finding this gem and am so grateful to Utube for making this possible. So lucky to be alive today❣️❣️❣️

If you haven't heard Gould's Beethoven Concerto #1 it has an original cadenza which I quite like! I don't know if it's on TH-cam or not.

@@CleverModerns I do have a set of cd’s by Gould playing all 5 piano concertos by Beethoven but don’t remember specifically #1. Now I have to check it out just for the cadenza. Thanks for the recommendation ❣️

@@CleverModerns Oh yes! I did find on Utube Gould’s earliest recorded footage playing Beethoven’s 1st in 1954. It did have the cadenza you mentioned. What a gift! I loved seeing his fingers playing almost the entire time. It is a shame that he quit performing live in his later years and we missed his spectacular keystrokes and pedal action. Listening to his recordings on CD is a treat but seeing him actually do it is amazing! The old footage was grainy and shows it’s age but I appreciate it far more than the “perfected” recordings he produced in later years.

....long time fan 45+ years...bought my first GG album when I was 15 y/o...the only downside to Gould was that perverse recording of Mozart sonatas in the early 70's on the fortepiano played at least 3X normal speed....

We don't get to hear the Beethoven 2nd piano concerto that often, in my life it was only the second performance I have heard. Pure poetry between Gould and Beethoven and am I alone, especially in regard to the second movement, in thinking Mozart was the dominant inspiration -- Mozart playing Beethoven? or Beethoven playing Mozart? A collaboration across centuries, courtesy of the other genius in the mix -- Glenn Gould.
Thank you for giving the wonderful opportunity to hear this performance this evening of Beethoven's 2nd piano concerto.

there were no words to this man's ability - he always, inevitably, played without a score, for a start. But that amazing technique and his own precocious interpretational style - these are unique. Here in this 1958 Sweden recording his 3rd movement to this Beethoven concerto is infectiously happy and light hearted. Wonderful.

Glenn Gould in1958 with the Swedish Radio Orchestra in a superb performance of Beethoven's Second Piano Concerto. Beethoven's music seems to reveal Gould's delicacy of feeling, those latent emotions which were hidden in his often intellectual approach to musical structure.

Just listen to that cadenza in the first movement. Gould makes a completely modern statement while somehow retaining Beethovenian harmonies and structure. The brilliant final runs would also have been pure Beethoven showing off his technical prowess while never sacrificing the musical content. Doesn't it seem Gould is channeling Ludwig?
