How to repair many files of these
If your file names are too long, move them to a different folder and/or try renaming them. Then try to open them in VLC again.

I CAN'T SPEAK FOR EVERYONE, BUT MY VIDEO FILE WAS 3 TO 4 FOLDERS DEEP ON MY SECOND HARD DRIVE AND I GOT THIS VLC MRL ERROR. HOWEVER, WHEN I PUT THE VIDEO 1 TO 2 FOLDERS DEEP IN THE SAME HARD DRIVE, THE VIDEO PLAYED WITH NO ERRORS. I guess some people's mrl error problem is different, but I hope I was able to help someone.

I know this is probably a dumb question, but how do I locate and find the folder with the issue?
The folder with the issue is probably the folder the video file is in.
My problem is a DVD/blu ray player. It plays DVD's fine but I get this exact error message when I try to play Blu ray.
OMG i just FOUND THE PROBLEM if all of this don't work its the folder itself I swear to god I had that exact problem did everything I could fine on the net firewall another player vlc reinstall. the problem was the folder where the file was in just take the file and put it in a new folder!!!!

@@AjitSingh-nx4kp ye i found out wij it is Windows only put a file name of 255 characlters so the name of the file and the map or probably maps can not be more thans 255 characlters simply said the name ist to long

Didn't work for me. In my properties I don't have a security tab. It only says General, Details and Previous Versions. Now what? I tried going to the advanced but it doesn't help.
Here is a method I tried and it worked for me, in my case I had alot of videos in one folder and all I did is renaming the folder because it was too long and I completly moved the folder to another path, as wierd as it sounds but it did work for me, apperntly the folder name was too long so the path is too long for VLC to handle.
I GOT A SOLUTION IF THIS DOES NOT WORK COMPLETELY FOR YOU. Just transfer the video to a different folder. Works like a charm. Let me know how it goes.

I have same problem in window 7 i saved some files through permission setting now i can access folders but my audio files can no be opened and error occur at vlc .i tried to change permission 1 by 1 but i can not change permission to all files in folder.kindly share a method so i may solve my problem by 1 click

IF THERE'S NO SECURITY TAB: go to details. at the bottom it says "remove properties and personal information", click it. A new window opens. click "create a copy with all possible properties removed", click OK. Wait for your copy to be made (copying progress shown in new window). Open your copy. It worked for me.

right click the folder> properties > security > click the "Users" > edit > click to check the "Full control"
then apply and ok

This didn't work for me but if you copy and paste your file in to any other folder it works.
(I copy mine on to desktop and then delete it after watching)

@@nano7055 just copy and paste the video file (AVI MPEG wtv) on to your desktop and play it from there. When it was in its original folder it wasn't working for me either.
Then it basically means we need to turn back to TVs to play Blu Ray players or DVD discs. This means that if we try to use HDMI to connect to screens we sometimes see the player, but then only once and probably never again for each monitor bought. If this is true we can choose between waiting for new OS releases able to detect the Blu Ray players, or giving it all up like people did with vaccines, and resorting to relying on TVs only.

I have this problem but the thing is its only has this error when i play videos from another Internal Hard drive (Not Drive C:). If i copy them to my C: Drive IT WORKS. I took out a Hard drive out of an DSTV and formated it to use it as an Internal Storage. I can copy things in to it but cannot play VLC or Windows Media Player. If you click "Property's " the section where it says "Opens with: Movies and TV" and cannot change that. If anyone know what the problem may be Please Help, Thank you in advance.

VLC player worked fine before the last update so why would it be failing now and why would ANY OTHER media player NOT have this issue? This is an asinine video.

@@nano7055 sort of. I didn't nail it down completely, but the fault was in the name of the file. Clearly there was a character or something in it that VLC doesn't like. I clipped out all the characters I thought might be weird and shortened the file name and that turned out to fix the issue. Weird how other players were not bothered by the file name.

@@nano7055 it usually happens because either the folder the file is in has a very long name or the file it self has long name. So just make the folders name shorter or take the Video out of the folder
