    For the first time since her 2007 rebuild, Reading & Northern 4-6-2 #425 pulled one of the annual Autumn Leaf Excursions without diesel assistance. These trains are usually 14 cars long, and #425 can't handle that much tonnage on the steep climb north of Tamaqua. Even with a shorter 8-car train, engineer Chris Bost fights to keep the power to the rails, as #425 climbs away from the Little Schuylkill River after passing through Tamaqua Tunnel.

    By itself, the fact that we get an in-cab ride with the wheelslip and incredible stack music should put this into everybody's YT algorithm. And 425's whistle. This is wicked good.

    I have used the Reading Line in 1963 going to the U of Penn from Pottstown for my MS degree in engineering at Penn. .I was working for NEAPCO in Pottstown as young engineer from 7:00AM to 3:00PM shift and then to Philly untill 10:00PM classes and then back to Pottstown for study and sleep.
    Very productive and beautiful years

    Excellent clip. Refreshing to see steam unassisted, a real rarity these days. The engineer did well considering the slippery conditions...leaf fall is a major hazard for any locomotive seeking traction. 👍👍👍

      #425 (built by Baldwin in 1928) was built without a mechanical stoker and I don't think R&N saw fit to have one installed. Most older US coal-fired engines are hand-fired, however.
      But bigger engines like the Reading T-1 #2102 require a mechanical stoker.

    So what was that surging...wheel slip???

    • @merrimacksacoproductions4497
      @merrimacksacoproductions4497 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was wheelslip, 425 from what I can tell is an incredibly powerful locomotive capable of handling the train assigned to her, but she is a passenger locomotive, and the way she was working is just screaming that she was on a grade, rather difficult to keep those large driving wheels in traction. Takes a steady hand on the throttle, which the engineer seems to have mastered upon hearing the slightest hint of slippage, coming up that grade she definitely was on the edge of adhesion, and still managed to keep her momentum going, impressive operating by the engineer here is an understatement.
