      someone needs to draw adams spirit floating over the shop think of Egyptian Pharos trying to hold onto all thier stuff in reincarnation,, we need adams shop replicated all over the world end of,,,,,
      a good start would be at the kennedy space museum with robots that help design stuff call it the crazy aliens makers workshop or something

    I love that Adam doesn't shy away from showing failure because it's all part of making, and learning to get past it is important to keep making.

    That "Deep Breath Moment", oh yeah, been there!
    My worst was breaking a large acrylic bell jar dome during the last fitting stage for a starjar for my eldest daughter.
    Glass domes are relatively easy to source but plastics? Not so much.
    Got it sorted eventually, with two days to spare, by harvesting every domed Christmas decoration I could find!
    Monetarily inexpensive, but I paid in sweat!

    This was a fun one! I worked on all three Robocops, but on the Rob Bottin side of the equation. I painted Robo on the first film.
    Anyway, big fan of the show, keep up the inspiration!!

      Man, how I envy having worked on those films. Is it true that the Robo suits look a lot greener in real life? I've read that it was made that way because of how film captures color.

    • @ChrisBoshProps
      @ChrisBoshProps 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's amazing that you got to work on the films! I just got done 3D printing a Robocop suit on my channel... is there anyway you can share or remember what paint you used for the first film? I know it looked more greenish in person then on film. Anyhow thanks for sharing that's pretty amazing man!

    8:30 I remember Phil Tippett saying that with Cain they wanted to make a model, a robot, that was so complicated with so many parts that it would be near impossible to reproduce or copy. Adam screwing this part up made me think.. wow Phil really did it lol.

    • @JetsetDruid
      @JetsetDruid 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I also remember this interview, I think what triggered it was that some Japanese model company had made ED-209 model kits shortly after the original RoboCop movie was released preventing Orion / Phil's team from being able to be first on the market with an ED-209 model.

  • @jemster38

    Absolutely my favorite robot/cyborg design of all time. I fell in love with it as a kid when I saw it in the cinema and to this day nothing has topped it.
    On a related note, the Moderoid line is making a model kit of Robocain and I can't wait to get it. This video is perfect for still captures of all its details when I build the model kit in the future. Can't wait!

  • @wirelesmike73
    @wirelesmike73 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have to agree, 100%. That is, without a doubt, one of, if not the best, robot designs that has ever been made for a film. In my opinion, nothing else even comes close. You have a real treasure there. Thanks for sharing.

  • @NekoFallen
    @NekoFallen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    What an incredibly detailed Cain Robot! Love all those moving parts and the thought to how each piece interacts with each other. I remember watching Robocop 2 as a kid, seeing how well (at the time) they made this mecha move. Replacing parts with aluminum pieces is such a great idea!
    Seeing the model, makes me wonder if they also included a mini screen for his 'face', as well as the tube the contains his organic Brain, Eyes and Spine?

  • @AugustMcKenna
    @AugustMcKenna 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    Got yourself a very fun Ship of Theseus situation here. Are you keeping the original cast parts? At the end of this exercise is the all-aluminum version a replica or the original? 🙃🤣

    This is one of the reasons I love Adam so much. He's not, and never tries to be, some untouchable, perfect being that some celebrities try and make themselves out to be. Instead, he reminds us all that he is in fact human too, someone that can and does make mistakes, even after years of experience. He shows us that things never go to planned and reminds us to take it with a deep breath and move on. Ever since I was little I've loved the human aspect of Adam, it made me feel like I was right there with him watching my best friend design, build, and test a project.
    As a student working towards my Mechanical Engineering Degree and an aspiring prop maker seeing Adam at his most human reminds me that my dreams are in fact achievable and always gives me more motivation and confidence that someday I will be able to make mistakes (and hopefully many successes) like this in my own workshop.
    Seriously love everything you do Adam and I hope you never stop doing it. You're an inspiration to many generations of makers.

    Adam seems to always misplace things when he has to answer the phone or door. He should make a bucket that says "When Phone Rings" or "Doorbell" so he can put whatever is in his hands at that moment in said bucket. Just an idea. 🤷

    Can't wait to see you do metal casting, which will be best for the pelvis and chest. Using the lost wax method will give you a lot of detail, and save a lot of time in machining.
    Now the one thing I would have differently would have been make all or most of the waist down parts out of zinc and all the waist up parts out of aluminum.
    You can cast zinc with a bench top casting set-up.
    You should try it, you might really like it.

    Contemporary version of "measure twice cut once" is called CAD/CAM. Only it's better and more like "Let computer Measure 10 million times and cut 10 thousand times". Order of Ops for collar set holes was good but slit saw Op should be near last (after the bosses profiled and bored ... "boss" better than "riser"). Love that you're covering these topics! My dad was the lead mfc Engineer for the Appolo 11 hatch you covered - he did all the CAD/CAM, NC programming and Machining Setup (Order of Ops /tool selection) on that project. He was a machinist par excellence and a CADCAM/CNC Pioneer.

    I work in a deep hole drilling machine shop and when Adam said that you don't want to be drilling on the tangent of a turned surface, I just wanted to send that clip to all of our customers. The amount of times they send us a finished machined part with intricate profiles and say can you put the holes in and we just sit there thinking yeah we can easily, if you hadn't machined it first. Now it's way more complicated and expensive.

  • @DecanFrost
    @DecanFrost 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    one thing i've learned is: never, ever make two of the same thing, in sterio. always make one at the time, so when youre happy with that piece, you can use that as a refrence to the clone.
    because, if you mess up, you only mess up that one piece, not two or more.
    if you have more that two, its fine, you have one refrence.
    and it doesnt cost you that much extra time, contra messing up a whole production line of items.
    The problem is the human mind. It loves, LOVES rhythms and patterns.
    And if you are making multiples of the same items, this happens.
    Once you are at the 3rd or 4th piece, then you can zone out and do your rhythm.
    Once you do things in sterio, or in bulks and you zone out? That when the grimlings strike haha.
    I knew you were going a mirror error, and I thought that was the mess up you where going to say, but no.
    You zoned out, happens to the best of us.

    I had to go back a couple of times to see what you'd done wrong. Seeing both the right and wrong parts on screen at the same time would have helped. But comforting to know that even someone if your skill level makes these sorts of mistakes sometimes!

    For me, the way I'd do that one is to bore the two large holes to size, then use an internal collet to retain on centre for the rotary table (the centre should be morse) with a toolmakers jack supporting the outside to ensure an accurate deck height. Mill each side flat on the rotary table, then slit, after slitting spot face for drilling (and to give the cap screw a seat), drill to tapping dimension, drill to clearance then tap. That way the threads don't get damaged by any prior operation and there's no risk of breaking through.
