Well, one reason among thousands the Queen Sound is so typical and unique because Brian May constructed his guitar by himself as I read in a music magazine in the 1970ties. Love and peace from Vienna, Austria.

The “ my fine friend” line was Freddie’s tribute to Marlene Dietrich. Freddie was a great fan of anything theatrical from the 30’s and 40’s..

  • @imweakfordeaky

John Deacon’s bass line is just so *tasty*… the whole song, every part, is just so perfectly placed… so delicately beautiful, then rocking out, then delicate… and those harmonies . And as always, Freddie being downright LEGENDARY ! Pure genius.

Without doubt in my top 5 Queen songs. Freddie´s playful brilliance combined with the other guys on top form, and that production! I always have a smile on my face after listening to this, probably at the sheer genius of it. BTW Freddie´s breathy vocals on the Take me wiz you part are an homage to Marlene Dietrich who he was a massive fan of. Oh and the photo is Hyde Park 1976 and yes, I WAS THERE!!!

This is why Queen are the greatest rock band of all time. One word that perfectly sums up Queen, VERSATILE. No other band combined so many elements into their music. Not even The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd had the versatility of Queen because those bands didn't have a creative genius like Freddie Mercury.

    HI DOE,
The aerial view at 2:53 is from Queen's famous free concert at Hyde Park in August of 1976. (That's the concert which Freddie's much-requested performance of "You Take My Breath Away" is from.)
Fun Fact: There had been such a heat wave/drought that summer, it was expected that the concert would have to be cancelled. At the last minute, Queen were given permission to go ahead with it... The attendance was approx. 125,000! (I'm pretty sure that's right, someone will correct me if I'm wrong.)
SADLY, there are no professional/high quality videos of the entire concert. (There might be some small professional/better quality snippets, IDK.) There exists bootleg video of the concert on YT, tho.

The thing with Freddies voice was the implementation of heavy smoking mixed with his voice cracking in 1982. As he undertook the mucho gay image he would increase his smoking to achieve a gravel like growl as he wanted a more masculine voice to suit his image. This and the straining of his voice whilst recording Another on bites the dust left damage to his vocal chords that would give way repeatedly during the 1982 hotspace tour and later the works and magic tours. The outcome was his live voice would drop lower, with Roger hitting the highest notes, yet his studio voice in the eighties did become boombastic. The trick however as with all Queen is in the production and on innuendo you can hear that freddies voice has been altered to sound young and powerful. If you have speed and pitch adjustable equipment and you slow it down you will find his true pitch more in line with the miricle and magic, although not the strongest album i believe the works was the last strongest vocal performance of the eighties with Queen along with Barcelona. Check out "I go crazy" b side to radio ga ga. blisters on fingers rock. love your work.

Freddie said “Actually I’d like to say that Brian did do a very good job on the actual guitars. He’s really taken his guitar orchestration to it’s limits. I don’t know how he’s ever going to out do that one actually. And John played very good bass on that. I think it’s good and we’re patting ourselves on the back again.” (Songfacts) - This song is about Scotsman John Reid, Queen’s manager at the time. Openly gay, he also managed Elton John and had a long-term relationship with him. He was according to Brian May, an “ebullient character” who helped manage the band through a tough time!

I would listen to all the Queen material, particularly the earlier stuff because that's where the real playfulness and roots of their style are best understood. That's not to say the later stuff is in any way bad - a bad Queen song is still epic, but to get their elemental self, it's good to dig into everything. They are that unique.

I'm sorry you are only just now or haven't figured out yet that every Queen song is on this level (except for the Flash Gordon Soundtrack). And, yes, they are better than the Beatles just as Led Zeppelin are better the QUEEN and Michael Jackson is better than them as the best. The difference between Queen and the Beatles is that you can listen to everything by them (except the Flash Gordon Soundtrack) and you can't listen to at least the first l.p. by the The Beatles if not more than that from their beginning.
