Just heard of this drone and yours was the 1st review I've seen of it, very nice! I seen how stiff that breeze was with the trees and thought wow that is nice and stable footage for those conditions. Good stuff!
I agree, very impressive. I've played with $50 drones to get a feel for them, but as you noted, they can't take any wind. I've found it hard to justify the price of the higher-end drones, so I've been in a bit of a quandry. This is more in line with what I'm willing to pay for what would be essentially a toy to go with our sailboat. Thank you very much for sharing this review.
Thanks for sharing this, Rick. It's nice to see a little healthy competition in the drone market. I've been with DJI products since they began back in 2007 with Flamewheels, etc... I've flown team blacksheep (TBS), Spidex, and now mostly phantoms. But I gotta say, Autel Robotics is impressing me. They had a good showing at NAB 2016. They've got my attention. Thanks again for sharing, Rick.
Yo, Capt. Rick - cheers from Encinitas, CA (north coastal San Diego). We enjoy living in paradise through your videos - please consider doing them more frequently!
The one thing I was taught by an old RC pilot as a novice is to turn your back somewhat and fly with it (in this case the drone) over your shoulder as it flies towards you. That helps maintain your orientation until you can get more time flying.
Nice review, Rick. Been flying mine for around two months, now. Solidly built. I use manual exposure and ND filters to lock in exposure and avoid blown out highlights. Hope you post some more footage once you "dial it in..."
nice video. Liked, and subbed. My wife and I love St. Maarten. We were there on a cruise on the Oasis of the Seas.Whenwe got there,I told her"Last time I was here,I drove myself". I had a 50 ton Ocean Operator license, ain the mid1980s the family had a 50' Defeverthat we took to St.Maarten from St.Croix.The boat is long gone, aapnd so is most of the family
Captain Rick. I bought the X-star premium and have not had the fortune you have with this product. At 1080p there is some snowy artifacts on my subject in full sun. Also, the background flickers and makes weird adjustments to the white balance. What software did you use to process your demo video ? The colors in my videos are drab in natural mode and over-saturated in vivid. I can not seem to find a happy medium. As much as i want to LOVE the X-start premium I am sending it back. Thanks for the great review, but I did not get a camera with the same quality video output.
Hmm.. sounds like it might be a settings issue, but I always record in raw format and do any color correction in post. Either of Final Cut Pro X or Adobe Premier Pro should do great for you... and from what you describe, make sure your lens is perfectly clean or direct sun will show tons of artifacts moving in your image
Thanks! I appreciate the feedback. I use VideoStudio Pro on a high-end PC but considering buying Adobe Premiere or an iMac and Final Cut Pro. I own a DJI P2 and GoPro Hero4 Black and produce good quality videos but loathe the lens distortion.
Great review Rick! The video from the camera on the Autel however appears to have blow out highlights and some of the colors are washed out..I'm using an calibrated Eizo ColorEdge 24" monitor. Maybe it's just that the video is a bit over exposed? Nice stable image though..
Nice video Rick! The footage is crystal clear even at the resolution you uploaded. Could you please tell us what the max range out is and max flight height for the drone? You did mention de top speed of 33 mph. Also it seems to be a great buy for the price point. Thanks
Autel claims the range is over a mileIt will go over400',which is higher than the FAA wants you flying anyway..It also needs to be registered, but that's not a big deal unless you don't do it and get caught
I really like this drone, the one thing that I would like to see on the Autel is terrain avoidance as on the Phantom 4, this is also to reason why I may purchase the Ph4 over the Autel.
I agree with you. The footage was clear and incredibly stable. It showed its stability clearly when you stopped drone and let it hover as you set it to "Fly home". The image was very still. Though I can't help but think this is almost a replica of the DJI Phantom. It looks so similar to the Phantom that I'm wondering what DJI thinks of it.
Excellent! So tired of DJI subpar support....actually abissimal aupport. Lucky for me i have the Chroma. First unit was bad.....i called and i had a brand new unit in my hand in 4 days....yep, stick it to DJI. I heard good things about Autel's CS. Is it really that ggo? Beautifull video. Any filters used?
hey rick,, saw no signal lost nor video glitching during the flight!!! so guess the app and the radio signal for both video and radio signal are a good enough!!!! great competitor against DJI you think????
Great review, Rick. How does this one compare to the current DJI Phantom 4? The price is certainly attractive and it seems from your review it has many of the sophisticated features of the current DJI.
Great video Captain. Very beautiful footage which I enjoyed watching just for the sake of the footage. I was intending to watch this video for the review, but I'll watch it again for the beautiful scenery. Thanks for posting. I've got an orange one of these on the way. It should arrive on Wednesday 01/18/17. Years ago, I tried a 450 size collective pitch helicopter for aerial videography, before drones had become a real option. After many crashes, each time requiring hoers of work to get the thing back up in the air, and spending much more time in the shop than I was flying. I gave up on ever flying again, that is, until now. I like the idea of flying something that is much less prone to damage in a crash. As you may know, there is no such thing as a minor crash with a heli. That's not to say that I expect to crash as often with a drone. I probably will use the intelligent orientation function at first, but I expect to be able to fly in manual mode relatively soon, since I do have a little heli experience. Thanks again, Eric
Very nice video. Crazy question, can you "see" what the drone sees from the ground, with the controller? Or that is downloaded on the sd card for playback later?
great vid! Thanks for sharing. Keep up the good work. Hows the speed pitch punch and acceleration. How much fly time with camera and without the camera? How would you compare this to the Yuneec 500 4 K
Ive been overall happy with this. I had have a motor burn out a few months ago...not sure why. But the customer service is pretty darn good I think. They took care of it. Yeah the wait time to ship it to them in Washington via FedEx can be quite painful...wait time. Take about a week from where I am. Another 4-5 days for them to repair. You can have the option to have it shipped back express but about $30 bucks. (again, my area on east coast) If not, then it takes another week to get back. As for smooth yaw...this has been a big issue with the X Star I think. FINALLY new Firmware has been released in Beta that improves this . I'm waiting for the final release of it. Overall it's a good drone..the camera quality is decent, 1080 and especially 4K video is super sharp.
Hi there, love all this new technology, I'm an ex flight attendant, and these drones travel at the same altitudes of aircraft- takeoff and landing altitudes, are there any aviation laws with these drones?
yes, the FAAwants you to fly under400'AGL,and always haveLOS,and eyes on the UAS.Drones over.55lbs.Must be registered with the FAA,and there are pretty severe penalties for failure to do so
I'm surprised one of these manufacturers haven't brought out a hexacopter yet? Quads are ok but if a motor fails it drops like a stone. Hexs will still fly with 5 or 4 motors running so a bit safer.
if I make a vid then take the memory card out and put it in my galaxy s7, will the video playback in the same quality? same with still photo's? if so im buying the orange one, cheers
I had the Typhoon H and the bird is cool but the camera is not good at all. If you just want to put on auto and have fun then this isn't the drone for you. They have a lot of problems with there software to. Look at there forum and see the problems before you buy it. I've had Phantom S, Phantom P and the yuneec and I would say the yuneec is better built than DJI, but then again most are. I'm actually picking one of these up do to the price, quality and customer service. I've been looking around and this thing looks pretty good all around and you don't hear a lot of bad things about it. If you already have the x-star than I would say keep your money because you wont gain that much more if any from what i'm seeing in the great reviews in this bird.
If you put it in auto it doesn't take good video, You have to do a lot of adjustments in your video and camera settings to make it look good. I thought i was pretty clear.
COOL NOW I UNDERSTAND. I WILL BE DOING SOME CAMERA ADJUSTMENTS, WHAT I HAVE SEEN ON OTHER DRONE CAMS IS GREAT VIDEO. BUT I WILL MAKE SOME ADJUSTMENTS. I DID NOT KNOW WHAT YOU MEANT BY AUTO, NOW I DO THANKS AGAIN KEITH KUHN
I looked into the Yuneec drones myself, but they lack the range that the Autel line gives you. Both brands have great cameras and are very capable though. The Yuneec does have the advantage of being able to find batteries for under $60 though. Please let us know what your experience is with the Typhoon, if that's what you end up getting.
I just got back from St Maarten and unfortunately, the government officials would not allow me to fly my registered Dji Phantom 3. I was kinda upset but what could I do, I was in a foreign country. Do you ever run into problems flying with the government?
The resemblance between the two,is external only.Internally they are very different machinesIt's no surprise they look alike. They are designed to do essentially the same thing

THAT was impressive and at $899, extremely so! Really smooth, excellent imagery and surprisingly filled with features. Thanks for showing us, Rick...
Just heard of this drone and yours was the 1st review I've seen of it, very nice! I seen how stiff that breeze was with the trees and thought wow that is nice and stable footage for those conditions. Good stuff!
Now that's a fun 'toy' to get to review! A lot of people don't like drones, but you sure can't beat the amazing film footage. Beautiful!
I agree, very impressive. I've played with $50 drones to get a feel for them, but as you noted, they can't take any wind. I've found it hard to justify the price of the higher-end drones, so I've been in a bit of a quandry. Great Video.... Love that Drone Video! Amazing....Very Impressive Drone! Thank You Rick for sharing!!
Its always helpful to hear that "ote" (out).
It lets you know you're dealing with a Canadian and should adjust your value on any advice accordingly.
The one thing I was taught by an old RC pilot as a novice is to turn your back somewhat and fly with it (in this case the drone) over your shoulder as it flies towards you. That helps maintain your orientation until you can get more time flying.
Great video of a beautiful place! Thanks for showing the X-Star going through the paces. Cinched my decision to get one.
I got an x s p because of this video, I love it,I even got the white one,Frank and the crew gave me a very good deal thanks. ..
This looks very smooth! I hear a lot about the yaw being very suspect but you are doing a very good job! Impressive I must say!
Nice review, Rick. Been flying mine for around two months, now. Solidly built. I use manual exposure and ND filters to lock in exposure and avoid blown out highlights. Hope you post some more footage once you "dial it in..."
Hi Captain Rick
I live inTortola. I found your video very educating and easy to under stand.
now I want to buy one of those X star Premium.
Be sure and talk to my friend Frank at www.CarolinaDronz.com and he can help you out... and tell him Captain Rick says hi! :)
Rick Moore thanks for the link!!
Looked very unstable when you did auto takeoff.
I know its a very good product for that price, complete rtf.
Did you do a compass calibration?
Rick,
Thanks for the review.... Looks like I am in the market for a Drone 😚😚😚😚

Good review
The Autel looks to be a very good product. Clear video, sharp footage
I didn't see any rotors in the shot either...looks like a great buy! Carolinadronz isn't the best!

video quality is pretty good for a $900 drone.thanks for the review Rick
Nice video. Enjoyed the footage. I purchased the Autel Premium. I'm waiting to receive it. My first drone. Thanks for the video.
Very stable and clear picture, very impressed. Was it just me, or was the horizon consistently off, sloping down from right to left?
I've had 2 Phantoms...... I love this one . Great drone and great customer service.
Great review Rick! The video from the camera on the Autel however appears to have blow out highlights and some of the colors are washed out..I'm using an calibrated Eizo ColorEdge 24" monitor. Maybe it's just that the video is a bit over exposed? Nice stable image though..
Excellent review. Would be keen to see a video on your power system for Sophisticated Lady. Especially since you added the new panels.
Nice video Rick! The footage is crystal clear even at the resolution you uploaded. Could you please tell us what the max range out is and max flight height for the drone? You did mention de top speed of 33 mph. Also it seems to be a great buy for the price point. Thanks

All pizzas come in square boxes. There is more than what meets the eye.

Excellent vid Rick.
The more videos I watch, the more impressive this bird becomes. Ok Crossing off DJI .... X Star Premium will do me.
hey rick,, saw no signal lost nor video glitching during the flight!!! so guess the app and the radio signal for both video and radio signal are a good enough!!!! great competitor against DJI you think????

Yes the video is streamed back to the transmitter,at up to a mile range according toAutel
What a beautiful video! Thanx for sharing! Im buying one next week. What is the total height it it capable of? And distance?
Nice 1 Rick!
Can you please show us how to make an impressive footage at the beginning (fly from ground to outer space). Thanks
great vid! Thanks for sharing. Keep up the good work.
Hows the speed pitch punch and acceleration. How much fly time with camera and without the camera? How would you compare this to the Yuneec 500 4 K
What was the battery life in flight?

great video and review ...but was it just me that saw some of the clouds washed out in pink?
Looks good ✔️
Been looking at those, seem like it's worth the money for sure!
rick thanks for the video hey do you still use the water proof drones and where do they come from.
that was very impressive. I want the p4. but this thing is bad ass. many people says good things about this one.
Excellent review, thank you...
Whats up with the gimbal ?
At the 7' mark its all tilted.
I just purchased the phantom 3 advance and now I'm thinking about canceling that order and buying one of these, thanks for the great video!!!!
Very impressive. Thanks!
I'm sold!
With the Phantom 3's now going for $500 is there any real advantage to this at almost twice as much Rick?
It's still a better value than the Phantom 4!
Randy Venier Its almost $600 more than the Phantom 4.
+Dr Dank Not quite, frendo. $600 less than Phantom 4.

Does it have failover return to home in case of lost signal?
Obviously not waterproof :(
I think you meant"fallback return to home"? I think it does, and for low battery.,as well. And asRick demonstrated,it has manualRTH
Hi Rick, what is the track you play with your videos, trying to get a copy, cheers Thanks

im looking into gettin a drone like this, tks rick
Wow that awesome!

The yuneec typhoon h
+Joel V Never seen one of them and looks like a decent bit of kit. Certainly would be my choice and cheaper than the best dji has to offer.
I've only seen the orange one. What happened to the white one Rick? Don't matter really. I'm going to order one from Frank.
It sounds like you did not upgrade the firmware prior to it's first flight Is that correct, and did you update the firmware at all?
if I make a vid then take the memory card out and put it in my galaxy s7, will the video playback in the same quality? same with still photo's? if so im buying the orange one, cheers
Has it got return to home
Yes, that was illustrated in the video
Are u dumb
I came really close to getting a mavick pro
One quick question, does phantom 3 series propellers fit to autel xstar? :D
No.
What island was this filmed at ??
Yuneec Typhoon H is a hexacopter!
Did you update the firmware? or fly right out of the box?
Can someone please please please tell me the name of this song playing while the Drone is flying?
I should have waited. My phantom 3 standard lacks to this work of art
yes, this one is almost like a P4 but for $400 less.. :)
and MUCH better customer service! :)
Do ya research next time u stooge
I'm sorry about that. try to sell it before it devalues and by this one?
mark daniels I no longer own a drone, returned it and got a trumpet

I just got back from St Maarten and unfortunately, the government officials would not allow me to fly my registered Dji Phantom 3. I was kinda upset but what could I do, I was in a foreign country. Do you ever run into problems flying with the government?
Taking off and landing on a sandy beach is not the best idea
Hey, Rick - perhaps consider responding to some of the comments on your videos.
Come on, man.

Rv
Belay that request, skipper - I see you responding on today's video.

Mavix PRO best drone now 4.5 Miles range
bluecoraly but this one is cheaper. You can ski get a cheap range extender
Can you fly with fat shark goggles
Sure, if you into that sorta thing.

the drone looks ugly but it still performs well
no me in looks like a lame copy of the phantom from DJI ,
