  • That's right - from April 16 through August 30, I read every single day in Japanese using the Satori Reader app (except for 2, but who's counting?). This was definitely the most consistent I've EVER been in any language.

    For me the secret to consistency has been to not be super strict about doing it daily, just set up a habit of oh, I do this before bed, or over breakfast or whenever. That way if my schedule is weird one day, or even for a week or something, and I can't do it, well that's ok, I'll do it when my schedule goes back to normal. It does get a little tricky when my schedule undergoes massive shifts, but then it's a matter of finding a new time for it.

      I did notice that once I had built up a habit after a few weeks, it did seem more engrained into me to think "oh, it's getting late, better do my Satori Reader before midnight"
      But I've found that I don't usually have the willpower to even get to the point of building a habit unless I initially tie some sort of daily goal to it. Then once I've kind of "forced" myself to get into the daily habit for a week or two it feels like a more natural part of my routine.

    I love how consistent you are 😊 5 months is a long period of time and even if you missed few days it's still really impressive 🎉 I love the language challenges you engage into ^^ Need to catch up on a lot of your videos, but I really love your energy💙💙💙

      I'm definitely not always that consistent 😂 doing something daily for 4.5 months was a serious stretch for me. I've actually taken a bit of a break from language learning for a little while now, and I'm trying to get back in the groove now. Challenges are definitely a fun option for boosting motivation!

    I really like what I've heard about this app. I am still working through Genki II, and I think I will wait till I finish that before I try it out. I also have a lifetime subscription with Wanikani. I have been doing that religiously for just over a year and I am now on level 21. That's not fast by most people's standards, but as Japanese is only a hobby, I can't devote several hours a day to it. I probably do around one hour per day on average. Hopefully when I start Sartori my Kanji knowledge will be decent.
    By the way, you seem like a fun person. Looking forward to more videos.

      I honestly think that roughly an hour per day for over a year is SUPER impressive! The 4.5 months of consistency I showed in this video was SO tough to complete haha.
      In the meantime while you're working on Genki 2, you might consider checking out Yomu Yomu! It has beginner content that Satori Reader doesn't -- I posted a video exploring it earlier today :)

    I love this!!! I am also a wildly inconsistent person, but this definitely inspires me to do something similar with French which has been almost a total failure to launch for like a full year now lol 😂

      Yeah, I feel like doing something like this would be great for your French! When you're more in the beginner phase or feeling rusty, the progress that you make over a short period of time like this seems so much more tangible and rewarding ☺

    Very interesting as always! Thanks for sharing, Satori looks like a really great app for reading in Japanese. A little aside but in the video you mention that you've done a lot of Chinese as well. Did you ever mention somewhere your experience with this language in more detail? Maybe I missed the video. Because if not, I'd be very interested to hear about your background and how you learned! By the way, do you still use Du chinese for reading?
    Thanks for the answer!

      While I have a couple of videos that focus on Chinese more heavily, I don't think I go into much detail about my background in them, mostly because it's pretty boring haha. Like I mentioned in this video, I took Mandarin classes in high school and university, which is where I learned the basics. After that I basically ignored Chinese altogether for several years except for watching the occasional drama, and maybe 2-3 years ago I started trying to get into it again by self-studying Chinese for the first time, which I've been doing on and off every since 😄
      I haven't found many resources I enjoy, with the exception of Du Chinese, which I love! Right now I'm really mostly focusing on Korean, so Du Chinese isn't getting highlighted on the channel much, but I still try to read a few articles/chapters here and there to maintain my character reading memory haha. In fact, I just started a new scary story on Du Chinese last night in honor of Halloween weekend! 🎃 Are you learning Mandarin as well?

      @@SomedayKorean I see ! I find this really interesting! Thanks you very much for sharing! And reading a horror story in Chinese is so cool ahha.
      Mhm ok very quickly, I'm a PhD student in botany in France and I want to focus my research on East Asia for my postdocs. So I'd like to have some knowledge of at least Chinese and Korean languages. I'm still finding it hard to decide which language to focus on, so I'm doing a bit of both. I'll have to see how I manage the rest, I know that research in my field in Korea is really not easy (to not say impossible ahaha). So I'm trying to open up as many opportunities as possible for what comes next. Theoretically, I should be doing Japanese too, but 3 languages in one go, I'm going to die for sure ahah.
      But your chanel is a real source of inspiration.

      @@quentin3331 That's really interesting -- East Asian botany is definitely a field that I have little to no knowledge of 🤣
      But yeah, jumping into the beginner phases of multiple languages at once can be extremely overwhelming, so best of luck with that! My personal favorite of the three is Korean, but if that's not as helpful for the actual postdoc research situation I guess you should choose what works best for you. Chinese has much easier grammar but a more complicated writing system to get used to, while Korean has an alphabet but a more complicated grammar system (in my opinion), so whichever one of those sounds more enjoyable to learn for you might be best. And of course, Japanese has the complex writing system AND the complex grammar system 😂

    I would love a comparison to lingq. I assume Satori is better for Japanese but Lingq can be used for your Korean and Chinese too.

    Me personally with Japanese I've been speaking it daily for years now but sit down studying is at a minimum and I'm super inconsistent with it... I want to be more consistent so I bought a bunch of books and my goal was to read them all this year but I only read I think 15 of the 53 I bought lol.... so that can show how consistent I am when it comes to reading at least. I really want to get back to Korean even though I'm super beginner level with I think relying on motivation to keep me going isn't enough I should set small goals maybe instead of looking at "I want to be fluent in 2 years" type thinking. lol

    • @SomedayKorean
      @SomedayKorean  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah I think small goals, or more tangible goals (like doing a certain activity regularly for a certain shorter period of time) can help push you to actually make progress towards that bigger goal.
      And while 15 doesn't seem that impressive compared to the total number of 53, that still sounds like you did a ton of reading to me! I only read 3-4 books this year in Korean I think 🤣

    • @Nighteye88
      @Nighteye88 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SomedayKorean yeah looking at 3-4 a year makes me feel a lot better honestly. I think I shoot too big I should be happy with what I did do. Because it's more books than I read in English too in a year.... which was closer to 1 maybe 2. 😆 ... But yeah smaller goals and shorter time periods is something I should try out. Thanks for the reply.

    @somedaykorean, do you feel like your listening abilities are good?

    • @SomedayKorean
      @SomedayKorean  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're asking about my Japanese listening skills, correct? It really depends on the topic, but I'd say they're probably weaker than my reading skills, where I can go at my own pace. I definitely used the app to specifically practice reading, not listening, although you could just listen to episodes rather than reading them to practice listening as well.

      😂😂 Join meeee! It's not like you're already learning, like, five other languages 😅
      None of the other languages you've learned are SOV, right? That'll be a new adventure!
