Should probably mention I was on a month and a half break to enjoy my summer and move into my new apartment. I'll be back to uploading regularly now. Also all of the ad revenue made from this video and my other GDQ video are going to be used to attend GDQ and I'll also be donating a lot of it sporadically during the events to push donation incentives like I did last event. EDIT: I made an error in my spreadsheet when inputting race data for the 2014 Super Metroid race. After making the correction I found that the race would have actually been put in the number 2 spot on the list. All of the data was hand entered over the span of 130 different races and I must have made an error typing. If you want to check out the race after the video here's the link th-cam.com/video/jU0fEc2PeSI/w-d-xo.html
It's a pleasant surprise to see this video in my feed. It's been a while since I've stopped following speedruns, but I still find your vids interesting.
EZScape as someone who helped this marathon when it was in Uyama's basement, it brings me a wealth of joy to see how you're using that revenue to support it as well. You are, as we once said, "THE MAN."
As a note, I really appreciate the yellow border to point out which runner to watch for the race during this highlights! Though, IMO I would recommend red or something more obvious next time. Really good video! :)
Kirby Mastah sure thing! Honestly the squares were a last minute decision so not too much thought was put into it. Don't think I'll need to use this method again, but if I do I'll use that instead. Glad you enjoyed it.
Honestly, you take the whole "Top 10" format and inject a level of quality into it that makes your videos worth watching and waiting for. Many of the tricks in speedruns are obscure things or strange glitches, so without your commentary providing context the clips would feel far less impressive. You're also more likely to spawn more speedrunners, since the tricks and skips are the most fascinating part of speedruns for most runners.
I really like how you explain in depth all of these runs, it helps me to understand what's going on and is what keeps me subscribed! Keep up the good work!
I feel so happy every time I see people speedrunning Mega Man Games. It's so amazing how quickly they are going through the stages, it's very inspiring and fun to watch!
WAY WAY better with more detail than just the endings. Often "how the got there" is really the interesting part, then just watching the results. Awesome list.
Just started watching speedruns a short while ago, and your channel has been essential. Great work, thanks for putting these together and for the detailed commentary!
I feel like the first 4 player Super Metroid any% race was the better one for showcasing. That one was much closer for the top runners and didn't have controversy during the event.
This list was made by going through every single GDQ race and inputting the data into an excel sheet to figure out which races were the closest. The formula I used was the difference in time between first and second place relative to the time first place got. This is so a run that's 40 minutes long with 4 seconds in time difference at the end would be considered closer than a 4 minute run with 1 second time difference. I generally try to keep my lists objective if I have the data to work with.
Does that formula make it so a 75 minute run with a 8 second time gap is considered closer than a 45 minute run with a 0.5-1 second time gap? Since that was how AGDQ 2014's Super Metroid race was. th-cam.com/video/lmfV8IhsHq0/w-d-xo.htmlh3m17s
Looking back at my spreadsheet the data for the 2014 race was entered incorrectly. Had it been entered correctly it would have been #2 on this list. Sorry for the mistake, I'll add that information to my pinned comment.
Put simply and cleanly, people taking a pun that became a backdrop of the event too far... and one of the runners getting really ticked off at the audience about it....
Awesome video. I still get the chills rewatching the Ducktales race between Garadas and me. I had missed some of the other races, need to rewatch the full runs now. Great work.
I've never been much of a fan of speedrunning races, but these close ones have really piqued my interest. Very exciting! I'll be looking forward to watching a few at the next GDQ. Thanks for this!
AHHH Plok. I remember that game. I have also done a glitch where you can skip most of the first island and just fight the final boss on that island. Not sure how I did it. I vividly recall doing it multiple times as a kid on the SNES. it might be what you mentioned in the video about grabbing a letter and then dying. Yet I remember spamming keys on the controller during the death scene until the overworld map shows up and i would "somehow" be at the final level on the first island. thanks for the nostalgia :)
U didnt spoiler the race u made it more spicy more interesting to watch the very end to almost can taste the feel of victory and the way it end up real close! U did great!
i remember a double dash all courses race at some event that i cant remember. in game time was used and at the end of the race about 3/10ths was bertween their times
i have the world record on tony hawk american wasteland for the camecube without doing kickflips or backflips, using the snes controller with an eyepatch on.
1:00 "Once you collect that Shine Sprite, you can enter any level..." I believe that you can just enter any of the _shine sprites in Gelato._ Not any _level._
5:20 if endy gets to the chest much sooner than garadas how come the flying bird appear in the same frame in the 2 runs? like if they got synced after the game ended. u can check it urself by pausing the video as the bird appears
Because she starts flying as soon as the cutscene ends. We both activated the cutscene in the same frame, endy just reached the chest sooner (30 frames) because he got a better TASbat. But, like i said, the cutscene started at the exact same moment.
I love watching a good 602 by chrism. Thanks for the brilliant recommendation and really every other race on the list. You make pewdiepie videos look lazy with the amount of effort you put into this and aren't bad at speaking; know how to write a great speech. Please never think you aren't good at this and I hope you want to keep making videos because I love watching them

Dude that was amazing!

what was the controversy during the 2017 run?
Put simply and cleanly, people taking a pun that became a backdrop of the event too far... and one of the runners getting really ticked off at the audience about it....

It doesn't get much better than this, eating peanut butter before bed while watching an EZScape top 10 :)
If only there were more high quality videos like this.

That 602 race was so hype. I've tuned in to every one after that.
That signature Blue Glass laugh at the end of Plok...
The sportsmanship in the Mario kart race makes me smile every time
16:04 "Mistakes are almost detrimental" Uhm...
That's what I was thinking, how could a mistake not be totally detrimental to a run.
+CaesarsSalad whoops thought I fixed that in post
i remember a double dash all courses race at some event that i cant remember. in game time was used and at the end of the race about 3/10ths was bertween their times

Hey EZ I'm happy that you put the number in the corner

I’d love to see a follow up to this vid, as there have been some great gdq races since. SGDQ 2017’s super Mario relay comes to mind.
I have class tomorrow, but these videos are too addicting

The Super Metroid Race between Ivan, Zoast, Krauser, and Garrison deserves a spot here.

That awkward high-five/hug at the end. Oof.
The ESA Batman Race was amazing. It ended up with a 1 frame difference.
Honorable mention to the Super Mario Bros. 3 race between GrandPoobear and MitchFlowerPower
