Asian women are highly fetishized in our society, especially by white men, and one of the roots of this problem is the “lotus blossom” stereotype -- also known as “china doll” or “Geisha Girl.” The Lotus Blossom trope portrays Asian women onscreen as objects of desire, but ones which are disposable. They’re lusted after only as long as they continue to project traits like obedience, subservience, and a baby-like lack of agency or individuality. Here’s our Take on how the Lotus Blossom trope fetishizes Asian women -- with dangerous real-world consequences.

It's not really an Asian fetish, but an east Asian fetish. The absence of just about anyone from the vast bulk of the continent in this video, or any commenting on that absence, makes this video drift into another stereotype, that west Asians and south Asians aren't as Asian as east Asians.

      That's pretty stupid comment.
      1. that's not the topic of this video. it would make a great topic for another video, but it's not the topic of THIS video.
      2. Any continent can be divided into multiple regions, countries, ethnicities, alliances, etc. There would be no point to any discussion if "representation of all groups of people" is what you spend your time worrying about. You wouldn't be able to finish making a single point without somebody saying they feel they didn't get as much representation as the other guys (or girls) (or they) (or them) (or it) (or attack-helicopter)....

As a black woman, I grew up a girl envious of Asian women because they were viewed as feminine while black women were viewed as manly and aggressive. I now see how harmful this stereotype is but even today in my community, the men say every woman is the most feminine and we are undesirable and masculine. It all boils down to sexism.
Asian women don't deserve to be seen as objects like this. It's actually pretty disgusting. This stereotype objectifies Asian women and emasculates Asian men while dehumanizing both of them.

Recently, black female curves have become extremely fetishized since the Kardashians. White girls are now getting Brazilian Butt Lifts to make their butts bigger, fillers in their lips and breast implants. I have also noticed that the Kardashians have also fetishized black men.

An acquaintance of mine (we used to play together) always expressed how much he wanted to marry an Asian (Japanese) woman because they are soft, good wives, subservient and submissive. He is a white dude who watches a lot of anime. I was very surprised because I had met many many Asian women in my life, especially Chinese and Korean and none of them were submissive. On the contrary... I felt sorry for this man. Now he is 27, still watching a lot of anime (nothing wrong with that) and dreaming about a 2D Asian woman because he went to Japan and got disappointed with the real thang.

as a Vietnamese woman who is living in Vietnam, this trope is really toxic in terms of how white people see us in general. Let’s me break this down as I’m writing. So I’ve been seeing a lot of white men who come here to “teach English” and they Only date Viet women but not all Viet women, they pick and choose women who are kinda clueless about how women should be treated because those men will use the excuse that it’s “cultural differences” to treat local women like literal dirt. Also, a really sad fact is a lot of beautiful Viet women would date really older and Shrek-looking white men because they’re white. It’s like a white supremacy/superior kinda thing here and it’s honestly so depressing. And those men brag about how they can score such beautiful girlfriends when they treat them like shit. It’s super messed up. I’m definitely not one of the “sweet” “submissive” Vietnamese here and so for those men, I’m seen as someone who is loud and too opinionated and pretty much undesirable. The white men here want Vietnamese women who are cool with whatever they do and obey them basically. Also, a lot of older white men come here to prey on much younger women (I’m talking 50s men and 20ish women). It’s very disturbing. For white women, I notice a pattern that even tho they don’t appear as rude or anything, they secretly jealous of Asian women because of these toxic stereotypes about us. They see us as someone who are more desired by white men and they view us as more sexual so even tho it’s not that strong, I can still tell that white women look down on us. Another thing is white men here in Vietnam definitely treat white women more respectfully than with Viet women, well because they objectify local women and they see local women as the inferior. It’s a sad sad truth

Wow, this is absolutely terrible and we people in America see it on shows like 90-day fiancé. In American culture, they like to deem Vietnam as a third-world country and push the stereotype of the country being so bad because of the Vietnam War in the '70s. (SIDE NOTE: Maybe it's me, but still to this day the Vietnam War was and is still not fully explained properly to me, and my grandfather was drafted in that war)That is the one, and the only reason why SOME Americans don't go there. However, the ones who do know how rich the country is are those old gross white men who go out there looking for wives. Although, it's not just white men who use the Lotus Blossom trope there have been Black American men who have also wanted the Lotus Blossom as well because they watch too much Anime. I'm a Black woman in this country and live on the pacific coast, and I was told while in bed with a guy that he wants to marry an Asian woman because they were "Much Nicer and have really long black hair". At this point, I've watched a lot of these different movie tropes and it really just showed me how movies and tv has damaged the worldview on everything.

Yo fam, there’s a female expat group in VN on FB, and someone said that Vietnam is toxic for their relationship. She explained that after moving to SG, her husbands of 7 years divorced her and got a Viet gf. And other women agreed too. It’s like the white men with wives or gfs went to asian countries, and decided to try “other flavor” than what they have at home. Ugh. And it doesn’t help that asian women see white men like their meal ticket out of the country. Many of my friends married to white men, some times much older white men.

YES! That's a great idea! I remember watching an episode of Zach & Cody (an American Disney show) and there was one episode when girl character disguises herself as a Russian woman. To do this, she pretended to be brutish and abrasive for some reason. She had a fake unibrow, a deep masculine voice, and stronger features. I found it so ridiculous and weird. I remember another movie called Dodgeball and they portrayed a Russian female character the exact same way. I have always wondered where those stereotypes come from and why it has always been okay to show Eastern European women that way. As a black woman, I already know the history of my stereotypes. I also know where Asian women's stereotypes come from. But I have no idea why media shows Russian women as rough. I would definitely like to learn more about those origins.

I noticed that it seems that any woman who is non-white always has very similar stereotypes linked to them. The "Jezebel" stereotypes of the African woman, the "Spicy Latina" of the South American woman and the "Lotus Blossom" of the Asian women, and these stereotypes are all do to colonialism and the belief of whiteness being equated to perfection and everything that is pure and good. And anyone who deviates from whiteness must have their own narratives which are often always negative.
Even these racial preferences (which make absolutely NO sense) is just due to colonialism.
I am not Asian but I am an African and it is honestly quite sad and nearly impossible to escape and deviate from these set "standards" which are unattainable for a person of colour.

In my five years living in Japan, I met so many white men who admitted that they had moved there explicitly because they wanted to date/marry Japanese women. To then see how agitated and frustrated they became when their Japanese partners didn't fulfill their "Lotus Blossom" fantasies was honestly upsetting. It really reveals how so many white men see Asian women more as sex objects than people.

All those stereotypes are based on actual expectations East Asian societies do have on women, though. It's not like westerners made them up, they observed how Asians act, compared the way they act to what they find normal in their own societies, and then imagined the differences to be more universally true than they are, but they're still actual things people in the east expect of women. What I'm saying is these expectations are more or less the normal expectations for all women in East Asia, which is kind of fucked up, westerners merely get horny at east Asian women actually managing to fit the expectations.

@@manyakulshreshtha8355 I'm not sure if I would call Hinata submissive, she's meek, shy and quite timid but she's hardly a doormat who would let anyone walk all over her, there were plenty of examples in where she challenged much stronger opponents out of pride or to protect someone she cares about, so I think she's ok even though she's pretty weak and doesn't get a lot of plot relevance. Orihime Inoue is a much better example imo, she had basically zero plot relevance, even less than Hinata, and never really served any purpose other than looking pretty and being a damsel in distress. Her personality was also as obedient and submissive as it can get. At least I have never seen anyone call her best girl though, most people thought Rukia was the most likeable female character of Bleach.
No idea about Rem, never watched that anime.
As for a positive example, I think Shikimori from Shikimori's Not Just A Cutie is pretty awesome, and the manga portrays a remarkably healthy relationship which is sadly not a common enough sight in media. Miku from The Way of the Househusband is also a particularly good one, and again an exceptionally good portrayal of a healthy relationship. And something remarkable about both of those manga is that not just the girl, but the guy is also a really good character who has a great chemistry with the female lead and is genuinely an amazing boyfriend / husband. Could probably list more examples, but those two are some of the female leads in manga who stood out to me the most for how good they are and how far they are from the more classical tropes of submissive Asian women.

I find that the hypersexualization of asian women has gone relatively unacknowledged, just as the larger invisibility of Asians in the discussion of racial justice! A lot of racism towards Asians, before the spike of hate crimes due to COVID-19, often perpetuated the stereotype of the Model Minorty. All my life, I've been asked to take these generalizations as compliments. I'm a child of immigrants, a first generation Canadian who grew up with Chinese values at home but had to adapt to western values on the playground, classroom, workplace, etc.
I've had everything from guys bowing to me, trying to speak to me in Japanese or comparing me to an "anime schoolgirl" to professionals coming up to me after hearing my keynote speech to say, "you're quite educated for a woman of your background" or "your english is very fluent, I'm surprised!". See, there's a spectrum. For the latter scenario, I knew that these professionals meant well but the assumptions and stereotypes they unwittingly perpetuated were harmful nonetheless. Hell, this Lotus Blossom / Dragon Lady dilemma even shows up in mainstream television like the silent, stoic dragon lady, "broadly Chinese" as drugpin villain in the pilot of Daredevil. Contrast this with more nuanced takes of asian identity in The Farewell, exploring individualism vs conformism through the moral dilemma of her grandma's terminal diagnosis. Ultimately, I'm grateful for this ever-evolving discourse. As a screenwriter, I'm excited to contribute to a new age of diverse and innovative stories!

All women of colour a fetishized but no one so blatantly and casually than Asian women which often can lead to violence . No one can dispute or dismiss this as a fact . I’ve overheard many white men , I’ve had white men who have personally been opened about their “ preference “ for Asian women which almost always is rooted in fetishization. Not all but majority of white men do . HOWEVER, there are many Asian women who openly fetishize when men too and deem it to be their “ preference “ . Many would go as far as belittling their Asian men to put their “ preference “ of a white man on a pedestal. Asian women and white men make up the majority of interracial relationships. If an Asian woman is not with an Asian man , she will almost always will pursue a white man . Proximity to whiteness , success , acceptance , assimilation, colorism , internslized racism. Many have or will get defensive of this truth that often always doesn’t get talked about . Proximity to whiteness or worshiping whiteness is deeply rooted in the Asian community. This perpetuation of white supremacist ideals . So if we’re going to talk about fetishization towards Asian women , you also need to mention Asian women fetishizating white men too . It goes both ways . How many Asian women openly speak of their preference for black men ? God forbid Most of your family members wouldn’t allow it . Negative stereotypes of black people/ black men run deep in the Asian community. So if most Asian have relationships with non Asians almost always white will be encouraged and preferred. Not many are ready for that conversation though !!!!!

If for some reason it isn't possible to hire an actor of the same nationality/cultural background then at least make sure there's a whole bunch of research/respect in writing/playing that role. Disappointedly, as shown in Take's video, big roles for Asians are traditionally restricted to be about Asian culture/history in which case hiring someone of a different nationality/cultural background really does matter and problematic stereotypes can pop up when directors/writers aren't of that nationality/cultural background either. Getting back to Woody Allen, I'm bothered with his pseudo-intellectual/philosophical films like Whatever Works. And especially Whatever Works. How does he espouse the philosophy of the movie title? By having his avatar, played by Larry David, 'helping' a young woman, played by Evan Rachel Wood, shed her and her family's Southern conservatism. The young woman, Melody, btw, was literally found at the lead character's doorstep, somewhat closer to the Born Yesterday trope. This is an *oddly specific* story to promote Whatever Works' philosophy when he could have tested this on various other New Yorkers from diverse backgrounds.

I think that reflects the beauty of other nations collective identity as opposed to American individualism which and be toxically competitive, overvaluing the spotlight for remarkable individuals rather than common goals and the greater good.

That would be an interesting topic, black men are insanely fetishized mostly because of porn and, to a lesser degree, by how they are portrayed in media. The idea that every black man is this hypermasculine hypersexual macho man with a tough guy attitude, an overly dominant personality and a huge penis seems to be getting disturbingly widespread, and most people don't seem to be aware of how degrading it is. Some even think it's a good think to be portrayed as being so masculine, without realizing that being forced into this weird fetishized ideal is not healthy, specially for those who don't fit into the stereotype.
Reminds me a lot to how this video describes the way Asian woman are stereotyped, but in the opposite direction, portraying them as wild animalistic sex beasts instead of weak submissive beauties.

Back when I was a sheltered little homeschooled girl, one of the things I loved and was never questioned about was my love of opera! I adored the drama and the music, and I remember one summer I rented a bunch of opera DVDs I found tucked away in a BOOK shelf at the library. One of them was Madame Butterfly, and not knowing anything about it I popped it on expecting a Japanese drama with beautiful costumes and a cool story. What I GOT was a shock as a third of the way through I had to turn it off because I couldn't stomach it anymore.
You have to understand: when I say I was sheltered I didn't know anything about social justice or inequality, I didn't have any POC in my rather small social circle, and the word "feminist" was one that vaguely represented extremist crazy women. Even with all that I KNEW something was wrong with how the character of Butterfly was spoken about and treated, and the discomfort I felt at the eerie way the characters interacted with her was enough to ruin the show for me entirely. How bad does it have to be when someone as clueless as me picked up on how gross and disgusting the situation was? I know that the story represents how real Asian women were treated, but it didn't act like the power imbalance and the blatant exploitation was the tragic part--what was tragic was how the lovers were separated by their different worlds and how noble Butterfly was. Bull-effin'-shit it is! What's tragic is that anyone still puts on productions of that opera.

I remember in Marlon Brando's movie set in Japan (forget the name) where he falls in love with a Japanese woman, he made the studio change the original film ending. He, quote, "didn't want another Madame Butterfly".
Instead of him leaving and the love interest killing herself, which was the original ending, the new ending had him stay behind and proclaim that he was going to love her no matter what. When she asked about what their children would be like, he said "They're gonna be half you and half me, and they'll be beautiful."
Brando did make some problematic films and had a history of problematic treatment of women to an extent, but I give credit where credit's due on that one. It was a much better call and far more humanizing.
