First off the opening Zeta "Toki wo Koete" is really good along with a great art style. Secondly the overall story is really brutal, and dark. Additionally the mecha designs are really cool.
Finally Kamille Bidan is the strongest newtype in canon (we could only imagine what would happen if he would pilot RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 03 Phenex equipped with Psycho-Frame).
Personally I always have problem between choosing the original Mobile Suit Gundam from 1979, or Mobile Suit Gundam Zeta as the best Gundam anime from Universal Century timeline.

Well said. Zeta was originally subtitled as Char's Counterattack (before the movie was planned) and the narrative was planned to be centered around Char, even though Camille was the protagonist. The direction Zeta took was unthought off , Amuro was sidelined, Gundam was black and evil, and Char now piloted gold mobile suit, all gave a fresh feel .
The other time I could think of having such a refresh feel was watching Giant Robo the Animation - the Day the Earth Stan Still from the 90s. The original Giant Robo was a 70s (?) SFX show with nothing particularly interesting. But the Giant Robo anime overhauled and expanded the story in ways unimaginable. Highly recommend to watch a bit of the 70s Giant Robo SFX, and started watching Giant Robo the Animation OAV. I don't think you will be disappointed.
( Coincidentally, the director of Giant Robo the Animation was Imagawa who also screen wrote the first episode of Zeta Gundam, if you enjoyed the 1st epsisode of Z, you would enjoy the Giant Robo anime)

Zeta Gundam is my favorite Gundam TV series as it's basically a sequel to what is already greatness in Gundam 0079.

Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan was very fast forward after the Motion Picture. A full transition of the uniforms replaces the ones from the first movie and learning Admiral Kirk had a wife and son, with no origins story or flashbacks. Zeta Gundam feels like Star Wars Episode IV where there's no origins story about the Titans and how the A.E.U.G. becomes the rebels made up of former Federation and Zeon pilots.

I really like zeta, I was a bit distracted by how much they emphasize the transforming mobile suits. But the story was great. Love the build-up to the end. Double zeta has been fun, but it just hasn't come close to what zeta did.

Zeta Gundam isn't just the best sequel in anime, it might be the best anime of all time.

I'm more thinking VOTOMS for best anime of all times, but Zeta Gundam's pretty damn close.

Picked up most of zeta gundam on dvd in a biglots many years ago. Fell in love instantly. Its in my top 3 of favorite gundams. And my top 3 favorites are so close to each other. But I love how it actually portrays what happens in real war. They don't make them like they used to. 😢❤

Start with Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, then watch the orginal Mobile Suit Gundam from 1979 (it has the old school anime artstyle, but the story is really good), Mobile Suit Gundam Zeta (this one has amazing visuals for it's time), Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack movie, Mobile Suit Gundam F91, and Mobile Suit Gundam Victory. Afther this you can try to watch some side Mobile Suit Gundam Universal Century anime like Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative, and Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway. Finally you can visit some future timelines like ∀ Gundam, and Gundam Reconguista in G.

I'm a new Gundam fan and I've slowly been trying to get through the whole franchise for the last couple years. The franchise can be kind hit and miss. Sometimes a series starts off great then it all falls apart, like with Stardust Memory. Some of the entries, particularly the movies like F91 and CCA, have terrible pacing and bloat. Zeta doesn't really have glaring issues. Its flaws don't stand out to an annoying degree and the plot keeps you engaged. I still think 0079 is the best of the whole franchise, but Zeta is right under it.

Great take. I mostly agree that Zeta is peak.
