Why I Believe Saddleback Should Be Reinstated to the SBC

- Saddleback Church was recently disfellowshipped from the SBC by its Executive Committee because it ordained three women as pastors in 2021; this in contradiction to scripture and to the Baptist Faith and Message 2000. Rick Warren wants Saddleback to be reinstated to the SBC at its annual meeting this June 11-12 by a vote of the messengers. This will likely surprise you, but I agree with Rick Warren. Saddleback should be reinstated to the SBC. Here's why.

To be honest, it has become near impossible to find a church for fellowship that is still completely teaching Gods truth and ONLY His truth and not following the ways of the world. It’s the Great Falling Away.

Reformed Baptist churches (substantial subscriber to 1689 LBCF).
Add on to that trying to find a good church that has a passion to faithfully fulfill the Great Commission. In my area there are many good Christ centered, Bible believing churches, but none of them are concerned with proactively fulfilling the Great Commission. Nor, do they even attempt to train and equip the members, in their churches, to individually fulfill the Great Commission. They are all pretty much Christian country clubs and/or Church Bible schools. Nothing wrong with Christian fellowship and teaching Biblical doctrines to the members, but without doing what the local church is supposed to do- proactively evangelize- then those churches will ultimately die off.
A line has to be drawn in Christian life. Either you accept the Bible as truth or you don't. It's that simple brothers and sisters.
RIGHT. It’s alll true or none at all. Can’t pick and choose . NO COMPROMISE! We must stand in the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth without wavering, no matter what.

The many churches within the SBC that are allowing women to preach, pastors plagiarizing other pastors, preaching a false prosperity Gospel, and Baptizing openly homosexual unrepentant sinners are the reasons our church withdrew from the SBC. It is blasphemy !

I met people from the SBC years ago. They appeared to be a bit more serious than the typical mainline churches which are generally 'social clubs' and "progressive". But already there were some concerns. And I personally think the 'church politics' are a symptom not the cause of the problem. It's not going to improve just for church administration ticking all the right boxes there.
There is no hope for Rick Warren. Warren must be expelled from ministry in the SBC. If not, the cancer of his apostasy will internally destroy the denomination. It appears that the apostasy within the SBC has gotten to such a level that it is time to leave the SBC.
Right on, I don't know why Justin wants this heretic back in the fold.

I always thought Elevation was some kind of charismatic church. I didn’t realize they were SBC. That’s honestly shocking.

Isn’t it? They have multiple reasons to disfellowship with his “church” besides the female pastor issue but it proves they have been asleep and now complicit at the SBC.
Furtick is so awful, he makes Joel Osteen sound like Charles Spurgeon.
Again, Pastor Stephen Furtick has a Master of Divinity Degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, just as Justin Peters has a Master of Divinity Degree from another Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. The difference between posters here that listen to Justin Peters, and Stephen Furtick is the difference between a Dispensationalist, Cessationist, believing that All Sign Gifts ceased at the end of the Apostolic Age, (Scofield Reference Bible, Doctrine on the same pages as the Word of God), and a person that believes that Sign Gifts, we believe based on Ephesians 2:8,9, example, that the Gift of Faith is needed to be Born Again, so did D.L. Moody, and R.A. Torrey, the First Dean of the College Pastor John MacArthur graduated from!
Southern Baptist has both Camps, and most are not 5 Point TULIP Lovers like the Reformed Baptists that Justin Peters runs around with!
Choosing not to do what is right because it will be hard is wrong. Hold them all to the standard
1000%. This is only the beginning. We need to be prepared to disfellowship Saddleback, amend the constitution and then give every church reported with a woman pastor the opportunity to repent or disfellowship them.
To me it sounded like the point Justin Peters was making was more of a warning to everyone who is going to vote yes to disfellowship Saddleback. He’s saying if you’re going to do this (and he even says they should), they better be prepared to do it for everyone, not just Saddleback

I’ve been a SBC pastor for over 38 years. I fought the “ Battle for the Bible” during the controversy over the inspiration of scripture. I didn’t fight for all this wickedness going on now!! God have mercy on us!!! We definitely need a Move of God in the SBC!!!
We are witnessing the move of God. God has moved His blessings out of the SBC and will do the same in the churches that continue to support the abominations committed by the convention. I’ll never forget last year driving all the way from Texas to Anaheim to announce the church I pastor is leaving because friendship with the world is enmity with God. I left the mic and went home. How many cowards sat their and rolled their eyes while knowing I was right? Who knows. But I can tell you that enough has been made public that any pastor not informing his congregation of what’s happening is complicit. I wouldn’t pastor a church if it wanted to stay in the SBC

Have you ever considered the very real possibility that this is happening because denominations aren't supposed to exist in the first place? They exist because ppl disagree with God. And what happens when ppl disagree with God? They start disagreeing with each other. This can certainly be seen in American politics. Literally no one in traditional Christianity ever stops to think that their schisms are a result of them disagreeing with God.
Very disturbing how quickly things have gotten so bad. The lunatics are running the asylum... we need to hang onto Jesus and His Word with all the strength our Heavenly Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit give to us. No human power can withstand this devilish onslaught
The SBC leaders are too cowardly to disfellow all of those churches.
It seems to me that the SBC now puts more value in its size than it's integrity. A few years ago, my local denomination (Free Reformed Churches of Australia) disfellowshipped our mother denomination (Reformed Churches of the Netherlands) for this exact same theological liberalism. First they allowed a liberal interpretation of Genesis 1-11, and then they began to allow female ministers and homosexual relationships. It was not something we did with any joy, but we had no choice but to break fellowship with all of our previous sister churches after years of calling them to repentance. Now the conservative members of both the Dutch Reformed Church and Reformed Churches Netherlands are being forced to rebuild and reunite as conservative churches again. That is what the SBC needs to do. Get rid of as much bad leaven as possible and call them to repentance. If they are faithful, or if there are faithful members in those churches they will rejoin the fellowship, but leaving all that rot in the denomination will speed up it's demise.
Throw out the leaven indeed👍What surprises me is how much money churches send them and don’t pay attention or send any delegates to their convention to keep it true to scripture. Seems the members of the SBC have been asleep too long and are reaping their reward.

Thought this was a little click baitish but after watching you have an excellent case here Justin! The bottom line is they need to disfellowship all the others that are in sinful rebellion against the word of God. No way around it.
Even better: Get out of SBC all who hold firm the Bible! (Revelation 18). Better to "Suffer OUT of the camp", like our Savior.!

The caveat. The Lord HAS BEEN and will continue to build his church. The issue as i see it is some are members of the local church but not members of Christ's ekklesia.

The SBC like so many other denominations have abandoned sound biblical doctrine in order to appease the world. We are witnessing a massive falling away which we know happens before the man of sin is revealed.
I think it's equal parts: 1)appease the world and 2)keep the money rolling in. They have left the One True God and turned to the god of mammon.
Even before I knew about the scripture forbidding this, I've always been uncomfortable seeing a woman pastor. I'm all for women having high positions in corporations, but in church, it's a different deal.

I think it is because when women preach they either adopt a very masculine tone and personality like a lot of the liberal churches or they adopt the Beth Moore and Hillsong tone where they are loud, crass and act like they are on Oprah.

Women can obvious do many things that men do, including drive semi-trucks. But the calling to be housewives and mothers is the highest calling there is.

I'm going as a messenger. I intend to vote to keep Saddleback out of the SBC, and to vote for Mike Law's amendment to the SBC constitution, which would make it clear that all churches with "women pastors" are not in close agreement with the BFM2k and should be removed. I appreciate you Justin, but many of us are trying to be consistent and biblical on both pastoral qualifications and using equal weights and measures, and allowing Saddleback back in to the convention isn't an option if we are going to be biblical.

I don't think you got what Justin Peters was saying in total. I know his words but he was saying that if you (as the SBC) allow these other churches with women pastors in the SBC then allow Saddleback also. Of course, Peters was correct. How could you remove one church and allow others to do the same without removing them also. It was a "tongue in cheek" reproach to the SBC to POTENTIALLY be inconsistent at the upcoming meeting.

He says as a practical matter you can't throw them all out so we have to let Rick back in. (That is not Christian logic or position). Society and practicality HAVE ZERO TO DO WITH GOD'S WORD.

I believe our obligation as messengers is to vote the right way every time. Saddleback is in clear violation of Scripture and the BFM. We need to find them and all these other churches to not be in friendly cooperation. It may never happen, but we are morally responsible to try.

My Pastor, in conjunction with our leadership, with unanimous support from the congregation, pulled thousands of dollars out of the SBC mission fund this year. We haven't officially LEFT the SBC yet, but we are heading that way. Praise God!

@@dondgc2298 NO. Our church just stopped giving to the SBC Mission Fund. We still support all the missionaries directly from our church. The reason we pulled the funding from the SBC is because they hired LAWYERS paid for out of the Mission Fund.
It would seem ' denomlnations' aren't scriptural anyway . I see nothing to support them. Am I wrong? Doesn't seem to fit the pattern of the local assemblies in Acts 2

Right now I am beyond shocked. I am absolutely 😮at things that are happening inside so called churches. I live in a small country town and I attended a women’s conference but left at the beginning of the first song because the “worship team” were lesbians. I couldn’t get out of there quick enough. Satans crafty little schemes rise to the level required to trick someone....and this is proof of that. Lots of churches in my area and surrounding area have women “pastors” and they (“bring the sermon”) preach as well. It’s alarming how much its happening. Thank you for all that you do. Love ya Brother and you are exactly right. However, as a long time SB we must vote to not reinstate Saddleback. They have been removed, this gives leverage to finish the job. The problem is we’ve elevated being nice over standing on our theological convictions. This must change. This is only going to work long term if we have the backbone to be consistent. I agree with you in being doubtful that such will happen. There are many other inconsistencies that would warrant removing churches- as you pointed out. It is a monumental task. We should talk sometime about how the messenger system we have no longer works and needs to change. That is huge part of the problem. Blessings dear Brother.

They’re sinning if they don’t kick out the rest of churches doing what Saddleback is doing. And they’re sinning if they take Saddleback back. Horrid spot they’ve put themselves in. This would not have happened if they held the line on biblical truth all along instead of drifting left. Praying for the faithful pastors who are still fighting the fight for truth in the sinking ship of the SBC.

I recently left the SBC after attending my whole life, now I'm going to a Bible believing Fundamental Independent Baptist Church! And I ain't lookin' back!!! Best decision ever!
And yet, if the church has the word "Fundamental" or "Fundamentalist" anywhere in its name or description, it is almost assuredly an ignorant, divisive, and/or legalistic KJV-only cult. Stay far away from those groups.
I said it before and I will say it again... the SBC is compromised by the enemy. Get out. Get out. Get out. Your church can do missions without the SBC. Be good stewards of your mission tithes and get to work in your own communities and send your own missionaries out with the Gospel.
We are about to leave our church, which is a part of the SBC. We are finding out things that are going on in our church, that we would have never dreamed would be going on. I’m heartbroken. We don’t know where to go.

Online with Grace Community or Trinity Bible Church Dallas are your best bets. A true Church is few and far between nowadays.
Make sure the elders and the congregation know why you’re leaving
Some SBC won't allow members to enjoy talking of scripture outside the grouped studies that it's watched and you cannot talk of it or the 2nd coming . This hurts the church becuz it kills teaching by socializing enjoying scripture but instead the verses get overlegislated which no wonder the church dies . The lie one has to be worthy to mention scripture on Sundays . That is not Christianity.

My church had a women preach on mothers day and i was shocked. In 15 year's ive been there that never happened. She was a guest speaker and we have no woman pastors at our church but i was very disappointed.

My denomination allows a female pastor. There was no one else to do it at the time. She had the credentials and was ordained after her years at bible college. It was a small congregation so she took no salary. She kept things going for a few years, then resigned to do missions. Now a man is filling the position.

Rick Warren is New Age! I was in that movement for over forty years and can spot the signs blindfolded. He's a wolf in sheep's clothing and needs our prayers and reprimands. May all of these ecumenical churches get back to sound doctrine, and may the power of God's Holy Spirit work through all of these would be pastors to see the light of truth before it's too late!

Hi Pastor Justin I just wanted to tell you and I'm sure I'm not the only one I'm a season Christian I've been saved over forty some years and I started to word a lot and I know about weights and measures and I know even that first I want to say something tell you off but then I realized I must listen to what you have to say first and I'm so glad I did you're absolutely right. It's wonderful you're gifted with this kind of insight now I don't like Pastor Rick Warren because he started the emergence Church movement and that ruined my Assembly of God Church and other churches that are somebody God that's why I no longer attend church at all. But you're right you have to hold them to the same standard as you would settle back. And if they're not willing to do that you're absolutely right it's not fair. Kudos to you Pastor you did a great job shining the light on this. I listen to you all the time and I really like you a lot my husband does to we listen to you read us the Bible every night when we can before we go to bed we have it on speed dial on a tablet your voice is so soft and smooth before you know it I'm sleeping but you'll see my husband's ahead of me in that department you just starting he falls asleep I guess when you're almost 70 have a right to fall asleep a little quicker. Just because there are many churches allowing women to preach doesn't make it any more acceptable. It's just as unacceptable as if it was only saddleback.
I have been a member of an SBC church most of my life. Since I was introduced to reformed doctrine about a year and a half ago, which I would say is simply what the Bible plainly teaches, I have come to understand that the SBC promotes many teachings which are not found in or have resulted from twisting scripture. I am not surprised that many churches are going "there own way." If you can ignore one part of scripture, what is to keep you from ignoring other parts? What the SBC does in June is a mute point for me. Sadly, I will be disaffiliating from them.

Reformed doctrine is not plainly taught in Scripture. There are Scriptures that seem to teach some of those doctrines, but most refute it. There is clearly some tension. I recognize those tensions but most Calvinists do not. Many, if not most, arrogantly dismiss any Scripture that doesn't "fit" their structure.
I used to say the same. But I got tired of the dualism of saying I believe the Bible yet denying these clear teachings.
I want to learn everything I can about theology so this is an honest seekers question, not an attack. What is the SBC teaching that is not found in the Bible or that they have been twisting scripture about? I am young and learning and have a sincere desire to know the truth, not some traditions or fables. I sincerely hope you will answer.
I have been southern baptist all my life. I’m almost 60 years old and the changes in the churches, people, services, music, women men children, everything has changed. (for the worst). We don't have to go to places that compromise things . And there are places like churches that are backslidden as a whole that will cause the members to do the same if stay there to have the spiritual compromise rub off . Those are when a person already has a right to leave . And if sin is allowed on the otherhand THAN THE CHURCH shouldn't be each there judging back and forth but they are doing that among the congregation . If I shouldn't even judge that includes those others cannot judge me either !! Otherwise its screwy and beyond unfair . Even a respected member does not get privileges to judge others if nobody is to judge another . Again if that's ignored it's very not fair .

In the USA it’s hard to find a non 501c3 church ( government controlled) truly Bible believing ( KJV) church!
Sunday is NOT the “ The Lord’s Day” read your Bible. Genesis 2:2, Exodus 20 and on and on. The book of Acts alone talks about the apostles keeping the sundown Friday to sundown Saturday over 80 times! The Roman Catholic Church changed the solemnity of Sabbath to Sun-day. It’s a false day of worship, a counterfeit. Remember the 4th Commandment ( it’s a command) starts with remember! Satan wants worship! Not one Bible verse say to now worship on Sunday. It actually says God’s word is the same, yesterday, today and tomorrow! Don’t believe the lying RCC that says they found “ new scripture “ supporting the change of the Sabbath! They are lying!
I appreciated your closing argument regarding the double standard of weighing the facts and maintaining consistency. I attend a SBC which is a first at the age of 80. I have come to a conclusion that denominational ties are destroying the church at large. Independent local churches owe their allegiance to our Lord, not a denomination of men.
According to Scripture they should be disbanded as they are not faithful to the Lord. Women are not to preach over men. PERIOD FULL STOP 1 Corinthians 14:34-35

I love your ministry Justin, but I have to disagree with you here. The church I pastor is sending two messengers to Louisiana and we fully intend on voting to not reinstate Saddleback. The thing is I completely agree with everything you said about the countless other “churches” that are allowing women to preach/pastor, but I come to a very different conclusion than you. I believe we should be saying “let’s vote them out too” instead of “well, I guess if it happens somewhere else too we can’t vote Saddleback out…” I’m in favor of disfellowshipping any and every church operating against the Word of God, so any/every time we have an opportunity to do so, we ought to take advantage. I am still hoping the SBC turns around, but if it doesn’t our church will have to leave. But while we’re still part of the SBC, I definitely want our church to be a part of the solution. God bless you Justin for all the work you put into your ministry. You are a great strength to the Body, and I personally appreciate you very much.
Thank you for your kind words, Devin. If the SBC would actually disfellowship all of these other churches, that would be ideal - but that's just not going to happen. Dwight McKissic on Twitter pointed out (rightly) that if every black church in the SBC were held to the same standard as Saddleback then 60-70% of them would be kicked out. That ain't gonna happen - not in a million years. Can you imagine the howls and the heat that would come crashing down on the SBC if they kicked out 60-70% of black churches?
I just think the SBC is too far gone. I don't think there is any turning it around. The cost for the SBC to do the right thing is just too high. If the SBC can't even disfellowship FBC Orlando for baptizing homosexuals then it sure won't disfellowship churches for having women pastors. I know there are good pastors leading good churches within the SBC (you are one of them), they are just too few and far between. I say this with sadness, because I was raised SBC, educated at an SBC seminary, all for the first 37 years of my life. Blessings to you.

I am feeling more and more that the SBC may be past the point of no return, and our church leadership has discussed the possibility of leaving. It is heartbreaking to see the shape of the SBC. From refusal to take a solid abolitionist stance on abortion, to remaining as vague as possible about how SBC funds (specifically cooperative program funds) are used, to failure to disfellowship churches that act completely against the Word of God and the Baptist Faith and Message 2000, to the entire Critical Race Theory debacle. There are many flaws in the SBC.
I just believe that together (if we were to faithfully follow God’s commands) we could spread the gospel more effectively than we could separately. That’s the hard part for me that makes me feel like the SBC is worth fighting for. But if they continue down the path they’re on, we won’t have any choice but to leave.

How can you be a pastor and know God's word?? The first person to spread the gospel of jesus's resurrection was a woman that's who he chose. That's who he selected. That's who he gave the ultimate blessing to. Mary Magdalene was the one who told the disciples. He is risen. How can you count out that the first evangelist was a female??

Joyce Meyer has not been a preacher in a church ,her ministry is directed towards woman. But FYI. A lot of men enjoy and have benefited from her books and ministry. That’s your choice to not listen to her. But please learn the difference between a teacher of the Word and Preacher of the Word 👍

I was abused as a child and became a drug and alcohol abuser for yrs her and Joyce Meyer’s ministry really blessed me and brought me close to the Lord. The SBC is going the way of the mainline dominations. Why? For the same reason those denominations went bad. Because "they" crept in. "For certain people have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into indecent behavior and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ." Jude 1:4
It is so very important in these last days to be watchful and be relentless for the truth. This is spiritual warfare. We have to fight for the truth of God's Word. This is a battle for the integrity of the church, between those indwelt by the Holy Spirit and those who worship a false Christ.

@@beaulin5628 There is no setting where God's people congregate that is immune to this reality. There will always be false converts and apostates. Even among the twelve, there was Judas. This will always happen. But the Bible also says that these people were marked out for this. It is by design, as God is sovereign over all. As we wrestle against spiritual wickedness in high places, we are actually strengthened, and we grow closer with one another, those of us who are in the truth. Those among us who are not in the truth, do not love the truth, and end up exchanging the truth for a lie, and are cut off. God is sovereign. We have no reason to fear, only to contend for the truth we love. And we will, those of us who belong to Him.

@@dianejarvis5620 I consider a blatant refusal to acknowledge scripture a serious denial of Christ, yes. This is not a difference of interpretation. I realize no church or denomination has a perfect understanding. This is an issue where one side shows a blatant willingness to disregard biblical prohibition and the other side doesn't. The hermeneutical standard used by egalitarians (or at least the ones who still bother themselves with the facade of being biblically minded) is incredibly similar in its methodology as that of the sodomites, and many other heretical movements and cults. That is not good company. Furthermore, there is overwhelming historical precedence demonstrating that once a governing body starts down the road of compromising biblical authority in this manner, it is a non-stop slide into further compromise, and ultimately, full blown, soul murdering apostasy. So I hardly think I'm being "petty".

Quite frankly the SBC should have been disbanded a long time ago,the problem being that in having such an organization of 1 type of denomination man's rules eventually supercede God's commandments. There may have been a time in which such organizing was temporarily necessary, but the evidence over the decades show that man's rule has pushed God off the throne and none are willing to call sin sin.
All denominations should be disbanded as far as the Bible is concerned. There certainly won't be any Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Baptist, Methodist, or Lutheran "Christianity" being taught when Christ restores the rule of God here.

Rick Warren helped me in the beginning of my search. He was easy & none threatening. Once I became a believer, his sermons became watered down & I needed a strong foundation & I was hungry to really know the word. But, I won’t deny that I needed him in the beginning because I was too much in the world to be interested in listening to theologians I follow now.
Yes!! The Lord can use all kinds of people to draw his children to himself. I followed Rob Bell when I was a baby Christian. The Pastors I now follow would certainly not agree with his teachings, but, for me, coming out of the New Age, he was my bridge into becoming a good Theologically sound Christian! The Jehova Witnesses were the first ones to bring me closer to Jesus, then it was Rob Bell, later Timothy Keller, David Pawson and R.C. Sproule. I benefitted so much from each teacher and feel very blessed to have had them all in my life.

A Church here in Shawnee, Okla who is a TMS graduate allows Elevevstion, Bethel, Hillsong music to be played. I asked him amd he said Johnny Mac said some of the songs are theological sound. I no longer go to that Church.
Alexander Strauch has a great book on biblical eldership if anyone is interested. Strauch does a great job on explaining the various titles of an pastor/elder and how they are used synonymously.

I`m from Britain, the church I just went to has an elder in it (formerly a pastor) that has no problem with women pastors, I quoted him 2 timothy 2:12 but he said that was written by a chauvinist mentality of the 1st century, then he told me his daughter is a pastor, that explains a lot.

Was southern baptist since the womb and a pastor for 15 YEARS in the SBC till last year. Lead pastor is full egalitarian, started affirming abortion, white privilege language behind closed doors, and fully went seeker friendly. Now I’m out. Pastoring in a non-denom. Emotional how much more free my family is.
This is why the UMC is coming apart, it's the leadership that is compelling orthodox to disaffiliate.
I think it is a sign of health that some still want to follow the Bible and are splitting away from the apostasy. I was beginning to think the whole denomination was spiritually "dead" and there was no hope. Run, people, run! "And do not partake of her plagues"..

This is why house churches are where the true remnant are. Isolated, without fellowship, and asking the Lord for a place to have fellowship that holds the true gospel and doctrine of grace as the standards to be compared to. Im ordained a preacher and teacher of my large family out of necessity for the consistency of teachings of the Holy Writ. Not willingly, but unwillingly ordained.

One of the great distinctives of Southern Baptists is that we don't tell other churches how to interpret Scripture. We are all independent churches for a reason. What SBC churches should be concerning themselves with is if we want to take away autonomy of the local church in order to keep their place as a Southern Baptist.
I am waiting to see what happens at the convention before I join the baptist church I have been attending for 2 years. My pastor is hoping they can turn things around, he is very firm on scripture . He is considering quitting SBC but wants to fight the good fight .
They'd be in even more of a pickle if the apostles where on this earth today-a clear distinction(s) *would be made* just as they were in Acts 15 i.e., truth vs error.
