My dad migrated to Los Angeles in the late 80s. While living there, he met people from the middle east, especially Falastini. My baba got so immersed in Arab culture that he grew to love the food, the music and most importantly the people. He loved everything about the middle east he even named me Samir. All his love for everything arab was passed down on me so much so that I have learned to make food favorites like falafel, shawarma, hummus, I absolutely love the music, and the warmth of middle easterners.
My baba is now in heaven, and I miss him.
In honor of the beautiful Arabic language, my daughter's name is Jamila.

For those wondering what is the name of this marvelous song, it's a classical song from the Egyptian diva Oum Kalthoum, the litteral translation of the name is "One thousand nights and on night" which is the Arabic name for "Arabian nights". The music composer is the genius Baligh Hamdi.

This is actually Byzantine music except for the words. Byzantine music is composed of both Ancient Greek and Persian music. The reason is that when Alexander the Great conquered the Achaemenid Empire, he adopted Persian culture into Greek culture. For example, the Persian "kamancheh" became lyra in Byzantine Empire and Arabs called "rebab" to kamancheh probably after the conquer of the Sassanid Empire of Iran by Arabs. Both from the Byzantine side and the North African side (from the Spanish peninsula) it spread through Europe and in Italy, it reached its last form which is the violin. This kind of Arab music is only made in the Levant region and Egypt because of the Byzantine Empire. Also Turkey of course

I enjoy this Arabic maqam tradition of music. Watching from Australia. I have also been a fan of Oum Kalthoum for many years - her seminal performances first taught me to appreciate other than my own Western traditions - I’m currently following Mai Farouk and still learning about the sounds and rhythms.
I don't know why this makes me feel peaceful. When she started the song, I was almost crying. Now became a huge fan of this channel from South Korea.🙂

To give you an idea about this masterpiece: The composer is Baligh Hamdi (Egypt) who is considered a genius when it comes to Arabic music, the original singer is the Diva UmKkulthoum (Egypt) who although died in mid 1970's, is still the all time singer in the Arab world, her work is still enjoyed by millions of Arabs, and will still be enjoyed long after we are gone.

Hahahaha I love that. I’m Brazilian, but as you may know, a lot of Portuguese colonized Brazil, and Portuguese were colonized by Arabs. Portuguese have a similar singing style called fado which I think is inspired from Arab singing. So my it’s funny how deep this music goes... also in my dna!

I always loved Arabic music and it helped me to get rid of distress and sad times. During my high school i would spend most of my pocket money to purchase 45 records with 😮oum kolsum’s music. I still have “ alef leila va leilah”. Thanks to all the new generation which kept the traditional arabic music alive.
