Thanks for this sharing. Batch filming is definitely my absolute tool to preserve my mental health and to keep time to Create. Also, I don't like when people overwhelm me with content everyday or so, so I try to feed my feed consistently but with spaces to let people discover me slowly. Guess that's really an introvert/ADHD/ASD facet that's triggered speaking of "binging content" and overnurishing the feed.

Great tips, I'm guilty of a few of these mistakes, but posting artwork everyday really is ridiculous and very unrealistic, I did batch uploads that were scheduled twice a week, and it was the best move made, a handful of artwork stretched out over a long period of time, I'm also guilty of pinning the responsibility on the platform, but again, it does what it does and none of us can control it, you said correctly, the only way we can get growth is by bringing something to the table, also known as value, my purpose was never to go viral, but to show the work I've done, and offer some of the tips and advice that helped me improve my art skills, let's see how it all goes 😊👍
Thanks for sharing your take on this. I think for myself, I've been in the mediocre artist range for a long time and you're right, you have to be so good they can't help but notice you. I think as artists we have to take an honest look at our art and if there isn't any growth from the art in the first post to the 100th, we're not going to see a lot of growth on our social media. Personally, I try to improve some aspect of the process with each video I upload as my art growth has always been slow and I can recognize that is reflected slow growth in my overall statistics. But in the meantime I can get better with titles, thumbnails, editing faster/tighter, and maintaining consistency, while I'm also working on bettering my art skills. Posing every single day is the mistake new comers on social media do and yes quality is by far more better than quantity. It is also true that the algorithm is not responsible for your lack of success the best way is finally to post good content. Thank you for your advices. 🙏
I think what Kelsey's saying is to prioritize quality over quantity. But it's hard when you think your content has that quality you thought you achieved but still gained very low engagement 🥲 For me posting fewer contents means I focused on the quality of that art or video while posting many or almost daily contents mean I don't mind if the art or the video is perfect. But both strategies do not guarantee more likes nor follows. So what I do is just create the things I love and post whenever I feel like it whether weekly daily or even monthly and do not worry much about the results. Afterall I love creating art and I don't want social media to ruin that ❤
I am trying my hand here at TH-cam for that very reason. I am an accountant. A mom. And a full time artist. I don’t have time to post every day. The time I get I am creating. I’m slowly building a body of work and attempting to document as I go. I am hoping to collect enough so I always stay “ahead” thank you for such a great channel!! Your advice is clear and direct and concepts are super relatable!
Personally I tend to engage less in post on Instagram when people post what feels like the same picture multiple times. For example posting a picture of a finished piece like five times.
This is such a great topic. It never gets old because it's so fundamental to human existence. Life is essentially a popularity contest. We don't question our wins. But we do question are losses. We analyze our losses to death. It's exhausting. Especially when it comes to social media because it's so complex. Analyzing social media is so exhausting that it makes you want to give up, quit being creative, and resign yourself to working at the job you hate until the day you die. At least you know the devil you're dealing with. You can never have enough videos about these existential topics.
While this video makes some sense from a TH-cam perspective, it doesn’t really factor in those that focus on insta as their primary platform where daily posting is their successful model. Artists have different goals, some do make daily content, done don’t need to because that’s not where their main business goal is.
Actually the advice about batching can and should 100% be applied to Instagram. Especially if someone wants to post everyday. That's actually really common advice that given to ppl who specialize on That along side re-purposed content is also really important. Especially if your trying to Appel to the people on Instagram who are used to that. It's a good strategy to avoid burn out! 😉 The whole point and focuses is to build a consistency your audience can expect. If you are able to make a post everyday. Ok. (I wouldn't recommend it as the starter unless you specifically want to target ppl with that expectation and you understand how much work will go into it if you don't batch to some extent) if you only post 3 times a week. Ok also. Your audience needs to know when they'll hear from you. They're anticipating your art/content! They want to see you. 😌 So when they know when to expect you the can show up. "It's not necessary to post everyday on Instagram to grow " is the idea this video is trying to get out there. Because I won't lie.....we really do get stuck in the rut of 'if we don't we won't be successful on Instagram.'
Even on IG you do not need to post every day to grow. Posting multiple times a week might be preferable, but as I mentioned, that’s where batching comes in. As artists, our content IS our art, and that just takes more time to create. Thanks for watching 🥰
Artists main aim should be art, it’s a shame we have to use social media but we aren’t primarily content creators. If your more content creation then artist you maybe wanna reconsider what you enjoy most ❤
Reading some of the replies I think what I’m trying to say may not have come through with what I wrote. When I work with artists my main point is it is your decision to use social media. You don’t HAVE to use any social media to be successful, but if you decide you want to use a platform AND want it be successful you have to play by the platforms rules or don’t be surprised when you don’t see success. I see comments like “I’ve been posting for 6 years with no growth”, did you optimize to win that platform, otherwise constant posting still may not work. At the end of the day my biggest advice to artists is if you plan to monetize your art (content or physical goods) is heavily consider budgeting for a coach for that platform to help you in the beginning.
@@BexEtcArt that’s sort of my point, artists don’t have to do anything, social media is a tool and if you want to use it to market that is your decision. An artist who monetizes by selling physical pieces vs one who chooses to create content and inspire or teach through their art are both artists, just like someone who creates with nobody ever seeing it is still an artist.

I posted every week for 7 years and never was able to get past 800 subscribers no matter what I tried or did and I burned out so I quit posting very often the past couple of years and now trying to revamp my channel and trying to figure out how to again improve it but feeling optimistic about it. I enjoy being creative and sharing with others, because I don't have anyone else in my life that is remotely interested, so now I am just going to enjoy creating and sharing and try not to be so concerned about the states.

You can fulfill all of the points she gives in the video and still nothing can happen. There is always an element of luck involved. Maybe the algorythm picking something by chance, or the right people sharing it. I see great artists with little followers (less than 5K) even they´ve been posting regularly for years, in fact they are the majority. By sheer numbers not everyone can have 100k followers. Even after all this been said it more probable to have more followers if you make great content than not making anything at all.
I was doing this for years, too. I never can get my followers over 525ish. I decided to take a break from art for a while, and when I started posting again, I got barely any response. I've even bought ads on Instagram, and it barely reaches anyone. Yet, the same content on fb gets a significant amount more of likes and comments. Sometimes, it is the algorithm's fault. I've seen other artists having the same problem. I've also seen artists doing basically the same thing as me and getting tons of likes and followers. I disagree with her comments in the video that our success on social media is all on ourselves and what we're doing wrong and not the platform.
i post every day (most days at least) bc i make stuff that is doodly enough that it's doable for me, and I'm used to making new drawings every day tbh but even then it's really valuable to prioritise other stuff and explore and vibe outside of posting. i think it's also useful for lots of people to try to be making & posting often and just not worry too much if what you're posting is your best, like just going all out and posting all your sketches and things. i wouldn't recommend it long term if it doesn't feel comfy tho
Adjusting your work to social media algorithms can be useful when you already have a regular schedule and content creation flow that you tweak around. One of the worst things a creative can do for their social media career - in my opinion of course - is trying to tick away the "algorithm boxes" from the get go, without any initial plan to how they want to present their craft. No matter how many "good" tricks you'll put into the content, if it is stiff and lifeless, it will be hard for anyone to connect to it. This is why I love watching the content from people like you. Your personality shines in every video.
yeeess an NMA sponsorship! congrats! thanks for this video we all appreciate it. this is really important for artists starting out and thinking that to grow their network they need to post everyday. i used to think that way , that i should upload everyday (curate my portfolio on instagram), but i really get exhausted really fast and i felt i wasn't growing art-wise that way and eventually i just decided that i would post what i want i wouldn't think too much of it. also Joshua( the founder of NMA) always tells us that you have to hone your skills, when people see your art is good and you put in the work, the clients/followers will come to you this is what i remind myself everytime i have the urge to chase the algorithm or follow the trend.

We’re told that Instagram’s algorithm favours quantity. So if you post a lot, they will prioritize your stuff on the main feed and in the feed of people who follow you, ultimately achieving more reach. It doesn’t have to be everyday but 3-4 times a week is what helped me grow. But Instagram is quick and easy whereas if I had a TH-cam channel also, I’d probably scale back on the Instagram posting.
The "post every day" advice can be very damaging to people who are trying to make an art career work while also having another full time job. As someone with a full time job, I can't imagine trying to produce something new every day and keep up with social media without losing my sanity. I can't even imagine finishing a full piece once a week! I am VERY new to the TH-cam thing and I'm just focusing on figuring out how exactly I want to do this, or even if I want to do this, while slogging through my 9 to 5. Time and patience and constant self reflection is definitely key here. Kelsey, your videos always motivate me to keep going, thank you!
I am trying for quality over quantity as well. I'm just a Watercolor Hobbyist who happens to really enjoy recording my painting sessions. I don't call them tutorials. They're more like watch me paint in real time. I'd like to do that once a week. I could care less about anything else. Thank you. You have helped me see that I was actually doing all of those mistakes. My main focus was on making money and trying to find a way to get followers and attention fast because that would = Fast Money. In doing so, I've lost touch with my soul or my creative side and was mostly just creating videos for the sake of it. Then I started to blame the platforms and thought that they had it out to get me and that no one liked anything I did = Feeling empty, down and worthless. So yeah, thank you for this again.
It can be really easy to fall into that situation! I’ve been there, it sucks. You feel like nothing is working and start to wonder if your work just isn’t good enough. I’ve found that it helps to make a point to create content and art that I’m really excited about, and to use the content I post on socials as a way to further my own artistic goals 💕

I think my phone was listening to my thoughts as I literally just made a rare insta post talking about how I cannot and will not ever put myself in a position to sustain posting on ig or youtube as much as I had in past years. I am full time artist, so social media is my main marketing outside of email lists. But I cannot do daily reels, shorts, tiktoks. Nah. I work, I create, but above all I have a family and my own mental health that has to come before all of that. It's not sustainable and was wrecking me and stressing me out when I got really busy with posting consistently a couple years ago. I'm more interested in putting out quality long form content on youtube when I feel the desire to share and when I think it'll provide value to someone else. It's kind of the new rule I've been living by in 2023.
Holy crap, this video came at the perfect time. I am burning out on social media and did all those things you said we're wrong. I am taking a huge step back, as I haven't seen sustained growth on platforms, especially Instagram. I've read that organic reach on Instagram is pretty much dead, and it's become pay to play. Will refocus my energy on growing my own art, and step off the hamster wheel of social media.

I feel like my drawings end up taking me too long these days and I worry I can never post enough or have enough content for social media. So I avoid it and slip away into the shadows. 🫠😂
I will say, and I'm going to key in on blaming the algorithm, I've posted a reel on Facebook before but I forgot to add that oh so important popular song. That reel barely saw traffic. The next day, I took it down and reuploaded making sure to tag the popular song. That reel then took off. So to an extent, the algorithm may work against you if you're not working with it.

Great video! I feel like I've been battling with instagram, trying to grow on there for years. But recently I realized there has got to be a better path to success. Been trying out some new things recently, nervous to take it to the next level and start a youtube channel. I think im gonna challenge myself to do it within the next couple of months though. I utilize tags with my other accounts to get cross posting exposure from the ceramic community but also to grow a community. I usually clear things with my hubby and friends to make sure I'm doing everything right, I just need to make content. the schedule idea is great!
I honestly get annoyed when my feed is constantly flooded by the same creator. Yes they work really hard but it gets overwhelming really fast. On the other hand, I « miss » creators that post once in a while and I really do enjoy their content more

I really like the way you split the screen between yourself and the painting process. I have a tendency to switch off videos if the mannerism of the person is irritating to me - probably loose out on great content but still. I was really excited to start, and then I felt overwhelmed by all the advice from bigger influencers and channels it kinda made me stressed to think about posting everyday.. so I was very inconsistent. I also have a passion for telling stories and connecting with others through my art. Seeing this video was the gentle reminder I needed, to know I can do it and that there are many different ways to go about it. Have a great day ! 😊
because of my day job it's very very hard to do the social media thing. My traffic times are when I work because I work in the EST afternoons most days. I look at my social media and it terrifies me honestly because I know I'm never gonna get to where I need to be to be noticed. I have anxiety and self esteem issues and it's literally been crippling my networking and creativity. I have family who have literally told me that what's the point in exhausting myself night after night trying to even do art when it's not making me money. I put too much time into it and seeing no results online. I can't just do this as a hobby because then my family would say "why aren't you working more at your day job? You need to make money. " and then if I do pick up extra hours, guess what? No time for art or networking AT ALL. I'm at the point of just giving up on art altogether because it's becoming stressful rather than relief but it's been my therapy that I can't just give it up.
I live in a state where there's no 9-5 art jobs I would have to move to get into any creative industry job. People locally don't think my art is real art because it's done on the computer and not painted on a canvas.
Also Kelsey I watched your video where you talked about how as you've created on youtube you've kind of learned its ways and now you know, ok, if I do this, this happens. If I do that, that happens and so you essentially can control your growth. I'm at that point now in my channel where it's like ohhhh 😆 like I'm seeing growth because of certain things I do. Truth be told, Most of this advice is Absolutely true, it SHOULD be obvious to anyone and i hope this is a good reminder to my art friends in the world that there is more to life than click-chasing. As a professional in the industry and I CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH ( at least for art only) just have fun, be yourself and everything else will eventually come, it just takes time and you gotta pull through. Haha you ve fallen right into my trap, the only way to get out of this unscaved is to become a better person, so try you best :)
one concern is artificial intelligence the technology we have now if it's always going to be available . not worried about robot versions of people hunting us down like in movies seen but want to know how it can make life easier for everyone soon .
I couldn't imaging posting a vlog everyday on youtube, even with batch filming that is so much work i guess if I really cared amount the numbers on youtube i would do a lot of research into why something failed, but I honestly dont care enough. sounds odd. posting videos but not caring hugely about the numbers, its great talking to people that comment in the videos, making online friends/acquaintances, but i make videos since they make me create something for their content. I would still create without the videos, but what it comes down to I guess is that even if one person that sees one of my video might smile or get a laugh at the art, i'm good with that.
Posting every day is for the influencers and they push that on to us but we aren’t like them really and I even think for them that’s excessive. My friend and I batch our content. So I do like 1-3 times, one video a week and then like small shorts or reels
I love your content but I disagree with the TH-cam centricity of it. I tried doing an art TH-cam for over a decade and it literally never took off even after huge shout-outs and opportunities. The ONLY place I've started to see success is on Instagram and TikTok, and that has come largely from posting every day haha. Absolutely not saying this video is wrong, I just can't relate to the TH-cam-focused strategy here. I think TH-cam is a dying dumpster fire honestly.

What’s are examples of art channels that put you off in terms of their content? Is it the art itself or is it because of the presenter? Introverted ppl like myself have a hard time getting noticed. Also to add to your point on 24/7 issue, some artists have to take a 2nd unrelated sometimes unskilled work to pay bills and living by yourself- it’s challenging.
Hi great video. Love it! I can relate as I am selftaught myself. There is just one thing about how to make art a career. How do you go out to that 9-5 job as an artist without an formal art degree? Isn't that option pretty much "a dead end" for us selftaughts'? I wanna make a career out of art. I see courses that can help me in getting to where I wanna be, but I don't have the health or finances to invest in them, no matter how talented I am and no matter how good of a mindset I have for kickstarting that career. I don't wanna invent the wheel and I rather go with some kinda proven method.
that's definitely not a dead end. your portfolio matters so much more than a degree when applying to jobs in the industry. I've interviewed multiple people who have spent decades working in film, animation, and video games and they all say the same thing
How is it living in Alaska? Is it always cold there? I love snow and blizzards, walking around in them, and just seeing the glory of the snowflakes fall down under a streetlight. I used to be really good with the cold when I was younger, I don't know what happened, but the cold gets to me. I would like to go somewhere where it is really cold though to get used to it. I would like to go somewhere like California, but I just couldn't stand the heat either, so it's a very awkward and contradicting situation for me to make up my mind, if I would go somewhere. Why am I saying this, I don't know. I guess that's what an artist that has nothing to lose, and is willing to change and wipe the slate clean everyday says and talks about. Anyway, Godspeed to all. That's before you get into the video where you admit you don't use IG yet go on to state emphatically that your personal workflow applies to that platform. Real talk? I love your art, but the last few months of " how I made x dollars" or "mistakes you're making" is adding to the dilution of artistic content. At this point you are knowingly following a formula that TH-cam is pushing hard, that of clickbait success tips. You do you, I personally choose to not support this business model.
I make these videos because people have consistently commented that there isn't enough business centric content out there for artists. While I'm not currently active on IG, I used to be and have plenty of professional connections who are, and this advice is consistent with what they would tell you. I think the title of this video is super reflective of the contents, I'm sorry you don't like it but it just isn't possible for me to please everyone.

I will continue to insist that clickbaity titles with capitalisation and parentheses emphasis is not necessary. It's a cheap and tabloidesque approach to view farming - if the content is needed and valid then it will stand on its own merit with a simple title. My personal experience does not align with the IG /social platform stats you have defended - either as an artist or as a campaign coordinator for a national art charity. I appreciate the healthy exchange and time to respond.

I'm just getting serious about my art social medias and I post once a week to youtube, instagram and Facebook and for the past 3 months I've seen steady growth. I tried posting every day for a week once as an experiment. My growth wasn't any different as far as speed 😆 but I am content with the growth that I am seeing as it is steady and predictable

Posing every single day is the mistake new comers on social media do and yes quality is by far more better than quantity. It is also true that the algorithm is not responsible for your lack of success the best way is finally to post good content. Thank you for your advices. 🙏
I think what Kelsey's saying is to prioritize quality over quantity. But it's hard when you think your content has that quality you thought you achieved but still gained very low engagement 🥲
For me posting fewer contents means I focused on the quality of that art or video while posting many or almost daily contents mean I don't mind if the art or the video is perfect. But both strategies do not guarantee more likes nor follows. So what I do is just create the things I love and post whenever I feel like it whether weekly daily or even monthly and do not worry much about the results. Afterall I love creating art and I don't want social media to ruin that ❤
I am trying my hand here at TH-cam for that very reason. I am an accountant. A mom. And a full time artist. I don’t have time to post every day. The time I get I am creating. I’m slowly building a body of work and attempting to document as I go. I am hoping to collect enough so I always stay “ahead” thank you for such a great channel!! Your advice is clear and direct and concepts are super relatable!
Personally I tend to engage less in post on Instagram when people post what feels like the same picture multiple times. For example posting a picture of a finished piece like five times.
I've been stressing out, so much, for weeks. This really helped me feel less stressed out and I want you to know how much what you're doing matters.
This is such a great topic. It never gets old because it's so fundamental to human existence. Life is essentially a popularity contest. We don't question our wins. But we do question are losses. We analyze our losses to death. It's exhausting. Especially when it comes to social media because it's so complex. Analyzing social media is so exhausting that it makes you want to give up, quit being creative, and resign yourself to working at the job you hate until the day you die. At least you know the devil you're dealing with. You can never have enough videos about these existential topics.
While this video makes some sense from a TH-cam perspective, it doesn’t really factor in those that focus on insta as their primary platform where daily posting is their successful model. Artists have different goals, some do make daily content, done don’t need to because that’s not where their main business goal is.
Actually the advice about batching can and should 100% be applied to Instagram.
Especially if someone wants to post everyday. That's actually really common advice that given to ppl who specialize on
That along side re-purposed content is also really important. Especially if your trying to Appel to the people on Instagram who are used to that. It's a good strategy to avoid burn out! 😉
The whole point and focuses is to build a consistency your audience can expect. If you are able to make a post everyday. Ok. (I wouldn't recommend it as the starter unless you specifically want to target ppl with that expectation and you understand how much work will go into it if you don't batch to some extent) if you only post 3 times a week. Ok also.
Your audience needs to know when they'll hear from you. They're anticipating your art/content! They want to see you. 😌 So when they know when to expect you the can show up.
"It's not necessary to post everyday on Instagram to grow " is the idea this video is trying to get out there. Because I won't lie.....we really do get stuck in the rut of 'if we don't we won't be successful on Instagram.'
Even on IG you do not need to post every day to grow. Posting multiple times a week might be preferable, but as I mentioned, that’s where batching comes in. As artists, our content IS our art, and that just takes more time to create. Thanks for watching 🥰
Artists main aim should be art, it’s a shame we have to use social media but we aren’t primarily content creators. If your more content creation then artist you maybe wanna reconsider what you enjoy most ❤
Reading some of the replies I think what I’m trying to say may not have come through with what I wrote. When I work with artists my main point is it is your decision to use social media. You don’t HAVE to use any social media to be successful, but if you decide you want to use a platform AND want it be successful you have to play by the platforms rules or don’t be surprised when you don’t see success. I see comments like “I’ve been posting for 6 years with no growth”, did you optimize to win that platform, otherwise constant posting still may not work. At the end of the day my biggest advice to artists is if you plan to monetize your art (content or physical goods) is heavily consider budgeting for a coach for that platform to help you in the beginning.
@@BexEtcArt that’s sort of my point, artists don’t have to do anything, social media is a tool and if you want to use it to market that is your decision. An artist who monetizes by selling physical pieces vs one who chooses to create content and inspire or teach through their art are both artists, just like someone who creates with nobody ever seeing it is still an artist.

I posted every week for 7 years and never was able to get past 800 subscribers no matter what I tried or did and I burned out so I quit posting very often the past couple of years and now trying to revamp my channel and trying to figure out how to again improve it but feeling optimistic about it. I enjoy being creative and sharing with others, because I don't have anyone else in my life that is remotely interested, so now I am just going to enjoy creating and sharing and try not to be so concerned about the states.
You can fulfill all of the points she gives in the video and still nothing can happen. There is always an element of luck involved. Maybe the algorythm picking something by chance, or the right people sharing it. I see great artists with little followers (less than 5K) even they´ve been posting regularly for years, in fact they are the majority. By sheer numbers not everyone can have 100k followers. Even after all this been said it more probable to have more followers if you make great content than not making anything at all.

I was doing this for years, too. I never can get my followers over 525ish. I decided to take a break from art for a while, and when I started posting again, I got barely any response. I've even bought ads on Instagram, and it barely reaches anyone. Yet, the same content on fb gets a significant amount more of likes and comments. Sometimes, it is the algorithm's fault. I've seen other artists having the same problem. I've also seen artists doing basically the same thing as me and getting tons of likes and followers. I disagree with her comments in the video that our success on social media is all on ourselves and what we're doing wrong and not the platform.

i post every day (most days at least) bc i make stuff that is doodly enough that it's doable for me, and I'm used to making new drawings every day tbh but even then it's really valuable to prioritise other stuff and explore and vibe outside of posting. i think it's also useful for lots of people to try to be making & posting often and just not worry too much if what you're posting is your best, like just going all out and posting all your sketches and things. i wouldn't recommend it long term if it doesn't feel comfy tho

Adjusting your work to social media algorithms can be useful when you already have a regular schedule and content creation flow that you tweak around. One of the worst things a creative can do for their social media career - in my opinion of course - is trying to tick away the "algorithm boxes" from the get go, without any initial plan to how they want to present their craft. No matter how many "good" tricks you'll put into the content, if it is stiff and lifeless, it will be hard for anyone to connect to it. This is why I love watching the content from people like you. Your personality shines in every video.

We’re told that Instagram’s algorithm favours quantity. So if you post a lot, they will prioritize your stuff on the main feed and in the feed of people who follow you, ultimately achieving more reach. It doesn’t have to be everyday but 3-4 times a week is what helped me grow. But Instagram is quick and easy whereas if I had a TH-cam channel also, I’d probably scale back on the Instagram posting.
The "post every day" advice can be very damaging to people who are trying to make an art career work while also having another full time job. As someone with a full time job, I can't imagine trying to produce something new every day and keep up with social media without losing my sanity. I can't even imagine finishing a full piece once a week! I am VERY new to the TH-cam thing and I'm just focusing on figuring out how exactly I want to do this, or even if I want to do this, while slogging through my 9 to 5. Time and patience and constant self reflection is definitely key here.

Thank you. You have helped me see that I was actually doing all of those mistakes. My main focus was on making money and trying to find a way to get followers and attention fast because that would = Fast Money.
In doing so, I've lost touch with my soul or my creative side and was mostly just creating videos for the sake of it. Then I started to blame the platforms and thought that they had it out to get me and that no one liked anything I did = Feeling empty, down and worthless.

It can be really easy to fall into that situation! I’ve been there, it sucks. You feel like nothing is working and start to wonder if your work just isn’t good enough. I’ve found that it helps to make a point to create content and art that I’m really excited about, and to use the content I post on socials as a way to further my own artistic goals 💕

I think my phone was listening to my thoughts as I literally just made a rare insta post talking about how I cannot and will not ever put myself in a position to sustain posting on ig or youtube as much as I had in past years. I am full time artist, so social media is my main marketing outside of email lists. But I cannot do daily reels, shorts, tiktoks. Nah. I work, I create, but above all I have a family and my own mental health that has to come before all of that. It's not sustainable and was wrecking me and stressing me out when I got really busy with posting consistently a couple years ago. I'm more interested in putting out quality long form content on youtube when I feel the desire to share and when I think it'll provide value to someone else. It's kind of the new rule I've been living by in 2023.
Holy crap, this video came at the perfect time. I am burning out on social media and did all those things you said we're wrong. I am taking a huge step back, as I haven't seen sustained growth on platforms, especially Instagram. I've read that organic reach on Instagram is pretty much dead, and it's become pay to play. Will refocus my energy on growing my own art, and step off the hamster wheel of social media.

Thanks so much for saying these things Kelsey!! As an artist that takes between 2 weeks to 2 months to complete one drawing, this is something that I needed to hear. I feel like my drawings end up taking me too long these days and I worry I can never post enough or have enough content for social media. So I avoid it and slip away into the shadows. 🫠😂
I will say, and I'm going to key in on blaming the algorithm, I've posted a reel on Facebook before but I forgot to add that oh so important popular song. That reel barely saw traffic. The next day, I took it down and reuploaded making sure to tag the popular song. That reel then took off. So to an extent, the algorithm may work against you if you're not working with it.

Tags have to matter because i use them to find videos to watch as a consumer of media all the time.
keywords certainly matter, but that isn't the same thing as tags, I think maybe you're confused about what those two terms mean!

Great video! I feel like I've been battling with instagram, trying to grow on there for years. But recently I realized there has got to be a better path to success. Been trying out some new things recently, nervous to take it to the next level and start a youtube channel. I think im gonna challenge myself to do it within the next couple of months though. I utilize tags with my other accounts to get cross posting exposure from the ceramic community but also to grow a community. I usually clear things with my hubby and friends to make sure I'm doing everything right, I just need to make content. the schedule idea is great!
I honestly get annoyed when my feed is constantly flooded by the same creator. Yes they work really hard but it gets overwhelming really fast. On the other hand, I « miss » creators that post once in a while and I really do enjoy their content more

I really like the way you split the screen between yourself and the painting process. I have a tendency to switch off videos if the mannerism of the person is irritating to me - probably loose out on great content but still. because of my day job it's very very hard to do the social media thing. My traffic times are when I work because I work in the EST afternoons most days. I look at my social media and it terrifies me honestly because I know I'm never gonna get to where I need to be to be noticed. I have anxiety and self esteem issues and it's literally been crippling my networking and creativity. I have family who have literally told me that what's the point in exhausting myself night after night trying to even do art when it's not making me money. I put too much time into it and seeing no results online. I can't just do this as a hobby because then my family would say "why aren't you working more at your day job? You need to make money. " and then if I do pick up extra hours, guess what? No time for art or networking AT ALL. I'm at the point of just giving up on art altogether because it's becoming stressful rather than relief but it's been my therapy that I can't just give it up.
I live in a state where there's no 9-5 art jobs I would have to move to get into any creative industry job. People locally don't think my art is real art because it's done on the computer and not painted on a canvas.

Truth be told, Most of this advice is Absolutely true, it SHOULD be obvious to anyone and i hope this is a good reminder to my art friends in the world that there is more to life than click-chasing. As a professional in the industry and I CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH ( at least for art only) just have fun, be yourself and everything else will eventually come, it just takes time and you gotta pull through.

one concern is artificial intelligence the technology we have now if it's always going to be available .
not worried about robot versions of people hunting us down like in movies seen but want to know how it can make life easier for everyone soon .
I couldn't imaging posting a vlog everyday on youtube, even with batch filming that is so much work
i guess if I really cared amount the numbers on youtube i would do a lot of research into why something failed, but I honestly dont care enough. sounds odd. posting videos but not caring hugely about the numbers, its great talking to people that comment in the videos, making online friends/acquaintances, but i make videos since they make me create something for their content. I would still create without the videos, but what it comes down to I guess is that even if one person that sees one of my video might smile or get a laugh at the art, i'm good with that.
Posting every day is for the influencers and they push that on to us but we aren’t like them really and I even think for them that’s excessive. My friend and I batch our content. So I do like 1-3 times, one video a week and then like small shorts or reels

I love your content but I disagree with the TH-cam centricity of it. I tried doing an art TH-cam for over a decade and it literally never took off even after huge shout-outs and opportunities. The ONLY place I've started to see success is on Instagram and TikTok, and that has come largely from posting every day haha. Absolutely not saying this video is wrong, I just can't relate to the TH-cam-focused strategy here. I think TH-cam is a dying dumpster fire honestly.

What’s are examples of art channels that put you off in terms of their content? Is it the art itself or is it because of the presenter? Introverted ppl like myself have a hard time getting noticed.
Also to add to your point on 24/7 issue, some artists have to take a 2nd unrelated sometimes unskilled work to pay bills and living by yourself- it’s challenging.

Hi great video. Love it! I can relate as I am selftaught myself. There is just one thing about how to make art a career. How do you go out to that 9-5 job as an artist without an formal art degree? Isn't that option pretty much "a dead end" for us selftaughts'?
I wanna make a career out of art. I see courses that can help me in getting to where I wanna be, but I don't have the health or finances to invest in them, no matter how talented I am and no matter how good of a mindset I have for kickstarting that career. I don't wanna invent the wheel and I rather go with some kinda proven method.
that's definitely not a dead end. your portfolio matters so much more than a degree when applying to jobs in the industry. I've interviewed multiple people who have spent decades working in film, animation, and video games and they all say the same thing

How is it living in Alaska? Is it always cold there? I love snow and blizzards, walking around in them, and just seeing the glory of the snowflakes fall down under a streetlight. I used to be really good with the cold when I was younger, I don't know what happened, but the cold gets to me. I would like to go somewhere where it is really cold though to get used to it.
I would like to go somewhere like California, but I just couldn't stand the heat either, so it's a very awkward and contradicting situation for me to make up my mind, if I would go somewhere. I record using my audio GarageBand! I recommend whatever software is easiest for you to get your hands on, you can make just about anything work

At this point I'm going to respectfully disagree with you and stop watching this content style. You've found sustained success with a format many others have adopted, monetising your workflow.

That's before you get into the video where you admit you don't use IG yet go on to state emphatically that your personal workflow applies to that platform. Real talk? I love your art, but the last few months of " how I made x dollars" or "mistakes you're making" is adding to the dilution of artistic content. At this point you are knowingly following a formula that TH-cam is pushing hard, that of clickbait success tips. You do you, I personally choose to not support this business model.
I make these videos because people have consistently commented that there isn't enough business centric content out there for artists. While I'm not currently active on IG, I used to be and have plenty of professional connections who are, and this advice is consistent with what they would tell you. I think the title of this video is super reflective of the contents, I'm sorry you don't like it but it just isn't possible for me to please everyone.

I will continue to insist that clickbaity titles with capitalisation and parentheses emphasis is not necessary. It's a cheap and tabloidesque approach to view farming - if the content is needed and valid then it will stand on its own merit with a simple title.
My personal experience does not align with the IG /social platform stats you have defended - either as an artist or as a campaign coordinator for a national art charity. I appreciate the healthy exchange and time to respond.

I'm just getting serious about my art social medias and I post once a week to youtube, instagram and Facebook and for the past 3 months I've seen steady growth. I tried posting every day for a week once as an experiment. My growth wasn't any different as far as speed 😆 but I am content with the growth that I am seeing as it is steady and predictable
I'm glad my dislike of and resistance to regular social media posting is validated. I have a job, I don't need a second one.
