Your videos have helped me so much with growing my channel Kelsey! I would not be monetized or putting out regular videos if I hadn’t listened to your advice, so thank you ❤️ There’s no shortcut, and I think people see big creators making content and think “I could do that” without realizing the work and intention that goes into it
I definitely want to say that getting over the fear and dread that may come with editing/posting videos is also a huge help. Sometimes you create something with a bit less effort to get the ball rolling, and then you're able to create more complex stuff if you wish. I had kept trying to create more dense videos, but realized that with my school schedule, I needed to back off of that a bit and focus on videos that feel good to make and are simple was the best option to start up again.
That's what I've had to do too. I’ve been trying to do one painting a week for my art channel and not a lot of editing goes into each because I'm currently working full-time as a Deaf Education teacher and also have a part-time job to pay for car insurance and get ahead on student loans. I work about 60 hours a week, but sometimes more, depending on school paperwork. I don't have enough time yet for a lot of the things I want to do. Once school is done (in two weeks yay!) I'm planning on jumping in full-time into two channels one for art and one for sharing Biblical, historical, and scientific information in ASL for the Deaf Community to have access. It just takes time and I know right now I can't do everything. I'm able to complete one painting and video a week, but setting up my art shop and the other TH-cam channel is going to have to wait two weeks. I'm super excited for the future, even if it means working really hard for two years or so before seeing growth!
You helped me so much and now I'm doing my social media for 4 months and on my way to becoming a partner! You made me believe it would be possible and got me going! I am forever grateful to you. Inspirational business advice I have never seen this way on here!
a tip to be interested in the film/editing process: find an aesthetic you're excited about!! if thats using a cute font to have captions built into your videos, or a format you enjoy, or even picking out some copyright free music you enjoy to place in your videos- that actually goes a really long way in inspiring you to actually sit and edit the video! for filming having a space to film in that is efficient and I really enjoy helped motivate me too!
While I understand the tip of separating the things you do, as someone with a severe energy deficiency and a complicated relationship with art, that has never worked for me and won't until I can at least get someone else to handle my socials. The only thing that happened was I became hyper aware of just how badly one of my art styles did in comparison to the other when I separated them into two different social accounts. But in reality, it wasn't actually doing that badly? It was more that me putting it on a different account made it have less eyes on it and therefore I started thinking it had less value. When I put it back on my main account? It was nerve-wracking, but ultimately I was much happier and found that I do have supporters who will love both types of work. It's not that I don't see where you're coming from, but I also think it's important that we allow ourselves to be people rather than brands if we need it. It's probably true that I'm sacrificing quicker growth for my sanity's sake though. But I don't want to wind up hating myself and feeling trapped years down the line. I just think sometimes taking it slow is better, for the sake of building a more sustainable foundation for your art and business. You're damn right that you should always love at least one aspect of what you do though. And you have lots of really good advice throughout your whole channel :) Keep up the good work!
Starting my own youtube channel here has definitely been one of the beat things I’ve done for my art, I feel a lot more excited about my art, I really appreciate your videos and they’ve been extremely helpful and inspiring!😁
@@mikenoneofyourbusiness7122 definitely not gonna just have 100K subs out the gate homie… I’ve only been at this consistently for a month and it’s going better than Instagram would I mean… I’m making more impressions than instagram, objectively, it IS one of the best things I’ve done
Haha the ending was great, and all the other advice too :) Thanks for being so realistic about how much effort you need to put into videos, and about having to treat filming and editing as an artform. It took a while for me to realise how many different skills you need to make a genuinely good youtube video. Writing, filming, editing, charisma and it's all pretty overwhelming (especially if english is not your first language and you don't want to sound super silly), but your videos really help to make it a bit less overwhelming, thank you :)
There’s definitely a ton that goes into it! Focusing on improving just a handful of skills with each video has made it a lot less intimidating for me 😅
Something that has helped me a lot to get to more people here in youtube is shorts! As an experiment, I have been uploading everyday for a little bit more than a week some reels that I haven't share here yet and it made me get more followers, views and interaction. Hope this tip helps because growing in social media is everytime more and more difficult... I loved the painting that you created during the video and the ending was the best hahah😍
Shorts are an increasingly great way to build traction and momentum on the platform! Seems like everyone’s always talking about it, and plus they’re so fast to make it’s def a no brainer 💗
I’m planning to start my own art channel, so having all of this advice is super good! Thank you very much, and I will definitely use info to my videos in the future
Thank you for the insights! I think I'm very much already applying most of what you talked about, I feel like I analyze everything I watch and the ending your videos part is something I picked up recently. Viewer retention and all that :') For me, the real struggle is the mental one. All the analyzing made me twist the facts of what I could still use some work on to prove that I'm "not as good as these people" which in turn demotivates me. But I've been getting help for that too and am on my way to reprogram those thought patters. Another topic I wanted to talk about regarding the separate channels thing: My channel grew big on animations centering around Genshin Impact and I eventually realized that that wasnt what I want my content to focus on. So basically I switched to art content (honestly I very much am not sure what type of content I want to be making yet so I'm still trying stuff out) and as you could expect, it is not doing well AT ALL. And that's frustrating because I know the content itself isn't bad. It's mainly that TH-cam thinks my audience is Genshin Impact viewers and those people don't have a huge overlap with my new content. I sometimes wonder if I should make a new channel and move my art content over there but I'm scared to abandon everything I've worked on so far. I already took a huge step (that may or may not have any impact) and unlisted most of those videos that made my channel what it is now in hopes that the algorithm will slowly learn who my new audience is supposed to be. Tldr: content creation is hard when your mental health is scuffed so take care of yourselves 💜 And thanks again for all the great content you produce! Seeing your success gives me hope that I can make this work out eventually.
Thank you for so such a good video! I always love learning about this stuff, especially since a goal of mine this year is to grow my channel. Also, I love the painting! As a digital artist, it's always fun watching the traditional art process.
Thanks I love your content! I am just starting my channel and started out by studying channels I really like and artist I admire and just leaving my camera on while I was painting and working. Being a teaching artist already helped greatly but talking head shots are just now getting comfortable. I think I just want to do it so I keep pushing through. It took me ages before I felt ready to post and after a couple months and starting to see baby steps towards my goals.
Thank you for the tips! I have a hard time choosing between art and writing for my channel, so I try to include a bit of both, but probably need to focus on writing exclusively and stick to Instagram only for art probably. (Although I mostly draw my characters from my books so it fits, sorta) Trying to figure out the best recipe for these two passions, as I want to continue making TH-cam videos and post my journey online in some form. :)
Every single video you make is a joy! You do all the stuff I want to strive to make my own content. Cozy, relaxing, informative ( very from it myself, but still ). Keep it up.
I really wanna do this but I keep putting it off, I want to draw and talk about random things I like, but I don't know what to do and I get nervous about this cuz I have social anxiety so it feels very scary to me, but I wish I didn't have this fear cuz I would love to make videos!
Thanks for this video! Can you look at some of your subscriber's channel who posts consistently and maybe give more direct tips on what could be improved, like a live case study kind of deal?
You are very encouraging and motivating....I finally started my channel this week!!! ( Well uploaded) Thanks for all your tips!!! I really appreciate them!!!!💙💙💙💙💙
Thank you so much Kelsey! I definitely need to work on my consistency! I also think I should really try to focus on one sort of thing. I do feel a bit conflicted though... cause I want to make videos that are more based around my actual art but I worry that people would only be interested in the business side (stifling my channels growth...). My conflicting thoughts result in me not doing anything though (back to the consistency)... I appears to be a self feeding loop 😂
Honestly, I've seen so many successful art channels on here that only focus on their art so it is possible! Find those channels and look at their videos. What makes them interesting? If business content isn't what you want your channel to be about, don't make that content. The people you attract from those videos will likely want to see more of that content. Having viewers for content that you aren't passionate about or that you dont want to make content for in the long run is very frustrating. Been there done that 👌 Best of luck to you!
hi kelsey! i love this and usually listen to your vids like a podcast. I'd love to see subtitles and a split screen version of this too. you always have such useful tips thanks for sharing!
Great Video! I recently started my channel and I am loving the whole process of creating art and video content, though it is slow. Your video gave me some good ideas and answered some questions I've been pondering. Thank you so much!
Thank you for this video! Your channel really got me started as trying TH-cam Art videos so this one comes very handy I think the most difficult thing is to improve the Art of video editing but so far I really love it thanks for all your tips :)
Digging into some of your older videos. Great evergreen content by the way. I struggle with figuring out what is trending in the art niche and what is working and what isn’t. Also not uploading as frequent as I’d like but trying to juggle being a single mom of 4 🤔🤷🏼♀️. Plenty of ideas, but time challenged. Currently experimenting with TH-cam shorts.
As an Artist and a new youtuber I have been trying by trial-and-error to work out what videos work, and which ones don't. So videos like this one really help with the process.
Pro tip: sorting your videos into categories to test things like red text or white text in your thumbnails (basic A/B testing) via the “Groups” feature in YT’s advanced analytics tab allows you to see lots of great data!
You have said it well. The reason I subscribed is for the advices regarding the business!! Even Though my content is Lifestyle, game Dev and Digital art, but your channel helped.
So, are you a full time artist or a full time TH-camr with an art niche? I suppose you can be both, but to be a full time TH-camr you pretty much have to be in a product mindset it just really lucky. I don’t want a product mindset. It’s bad for me, it’s bad for my art, and it’s bad for the creativity I put out into the world and the community. Some of us aren’t really interested in monetizing our channels. I just want to sell som art so I can make my process better.
Such useful info🙌❤ I was definitely guilty of just uploading my procreate time-lapses in the beginning, just because I felt like I never had time to actually film/edit anything, but once I started talking YT more seriously I noticed a huge increase in traffic/subscribers! I still do speedpaint videos, but I actually screen-record and voiceover my videos now, I think it’s made my videos much more interesting for sure! Thanks for all the useful info, your channel is super inspiring and so helpful❤❤
@@mikenoneofyourbusiness7122 I never said success haha, so what are YOU talking about?😉 I did say I had an increase in subs after focusing more on my editing, which is definitely true! Went from 10 subs to 400 within a few months, and I definitely think editing was a huge factor!☺️
Hi Kelsey, thanks so much for not gatekeeping this info and breaking it down for us❤~ I’m still learning the ins and outs of editing and going through the journey of making art and doing youtube, and OHMYGOSH, i don’t know why but when you talked about making sure that we don’t waste other people’s time, when I edit, it just goes over my head. Where is the line between peaceful calm vibes and boring?@A@ Do you have any tips for that? Thanks again C’:
That’s a hard line to walk for sure! I’m not the best at this FWIW, but I think creators like Leigh Ellexson and Valerie Lin really nail the peaceful vibe without it being boring, there’s something about frequent camera angle changes and lots of b-roll shots as well as an overarching story that really brings it together!
😊Once again I really enjoyed this video. It has come to me pretty close to the right time. I am contemplating setting up both a web site and a You Tube site for the art that I have been doing for well over 50 years. I am retired and have spent several months going back through old boxes and seldom used shelves or drawers looking for much of my earlier art. From that I am ‘redoing’ what I sketched or painted way back. Much of it is at most reference material, but the new pen and ink drawings, some with a watercolor wash, are pretty good I have been told. We will see. First I need to do some writing, editing, filming, editing, and of course sketching and drawing. No famous overnight stuff. It will be work, but win or lose it will be fun or I will not do it. Stay safe and healthy as I want to see more of your work and learn more about this side of it. -OkieSketcher1949
@@OkieSketcher1949 Rooting for you Robert! I hope you get to make lots of new art that will fill your heart with joy C: I'll be your first subscriber and await future videos hehe
At the moment I am hit with a struggle. I want to add art to my TH-cam channel as content, even though that was not the basis of starting the channel. This is different than my regular content. I am not sure how to do that without loosing any audience and yet growing. What I know for sure is that I do not have the mental bandwidth to have a second TH-cam channel. Anyways cheers.
I'm slowly getting better with the personality portion of it. While writing this, I thought I was the only one doing art history. Alternatively, I, occasionally, incorporate it into my channel and give "Rob" his own channel. I use an "ai animated" photo of my cat to "host those spots. I've started polling my audience to see what they want to see as opposed to just doing "real time" paintings. If anyone is interested, I show you how I've modified the wet-on-wet oil techniques to acrylics.
i bet someone suggested this already, but have you ever considered making a podcast? i always listen to your videos while drawing, bc they're mostly focused on talking and not on showing, and i'm sure if you put them in audio format for example on spotify it wouldn't be that much extra work and it could potentially bring new people to your channel? your voice is very soothing, you talk about things in a captivating way, and you have lots of interesting art-related info and advice to share, so i think your content could be a lovely experience through an audio-only medium too!
I used to have a podcast with my friend Al called the Make Art Don't Starve podcast but we discontinued it! I'm open to doing a podcast in the future maybe! I also just have loads of playlists so you could just pop one on and listen in the background if you wanted
I always wanted to start over but after posting 1 art in instagram i suddenly feel terrible again. I need to know how to detach and just stop caring about likes and views but it's harder than it sounds
I’m a total introvert with a bad stutter. No one wants to listen to me stammer through educational videos. So that’s why I don’t speak in my Timelapse’s because of my stutter. It’s not because I hate my voice it’s because of the stutter and people have left my streams on twitch while I’m going through a stuttering moment. 😢
I would 100% want to listen, its about what you say, not how you say it for me :) I think when building your channel/brand things like that are unique to you, people get used to it, and you can even inspire other people that struggle with the same thing. It is definitely hard, Im sure, I dont want to diminish your struggle in any way, just wanted to say that I would totally watch, regardless of stammering ❤ I also think it is so hard for everyone in the beginning to talk to the camera and/or include voice so I understand this is an extra added hurdle for you. I hope you find a way to build this up slowly and eventually be confident to show yourself fully, stutter included (though it may even get better when you feel more comfy) :)
I finally started my channel as well, I still have a lot to figure out but at least I started posting which is what counts! Your videos help a ton ✨✨ What partner are you using with Squarespace and have print on demand? I'd love to have a customizable print shop but have no idea how to do it with print on demand.
What do you think of the use of phones like the iPhone 13, 14 in relation to other cameras? Do you think it is still necessary to acquire a cannon or a sony for example? Thank you very much for the effort you make.
I do think it's still necessary once you get to a certain point. I filmed on my iPhone 11 for the first eight or nine months of my channel and it was a massive pain in the ass, the quality still doesn't compare.
I am about to upload my lengthiest most rambling art video on my tiny channel and i'm starting to regret that choice........ all my other vids are pretty short and to the point but I kinda indulged in this last one. I guess I'll see how it goes. Also i just *can't* justify investing money in something that is making me 0 money (and I am currently unemployed...)
Hello. These tips are helpful for me since I’m brainstorming about the content of my channel. But when getting into educational topics, especially a longer topic would making a series about it be good?
sure! as long as you don't title them "part one" etc, make sure each episode stands on it's own and then have them all together in a playlist that you link on your channel and in the description
i dont think i will ever spend a lot of money on a camera, its honestly not something I could see myself getting when i could put the money towards a PhD, but i do youtube as a hobby not is a job, which is the big difference
how do you know whether this particular thing works for particular channel? You need stats for long period of time and similar settings while changing only one. But research of lots of variables with vague criteria leads to distorted wishful thinking
I didn’t suggest one particular thing in this video so I’m not fully understanding the point of your comment? Either way, A/B testing various formats and subjects can definitely be done on a brand new channel. I think you should of course write down (or at least be aware of) the hypothesis you want to test when doing any experiment, and then likely sort them and compare the data via the groups feature in the advanced analytics tab. Regardless, I think it’s obvious that you should change *something* if nothing is working, and improving the quality is an absolute no brainer
@@KelseyRodriguez Yes, I mean that doing this research I have no idea what was the main factor that author got 20k or 150k views: is it because of preview design, endscreens or some direct links from social networks... Do you know how to collect stats for other channels? Say, now they have 500k subscribers, and I want to see how fast they grew.
So if you can't even hold the camera like you know nothing about filming, would you just suggests like taking a film course online to learn how to actually make you two videos? Because I've never used the camera in my life
There are tons of youtube videos that will teach you all about cameras and filming and video editing. Watch the stuff that’s available for free before investing in a course!
Thanks! There are some really usefull things things in there 😀😀😀 I started my art channel two months ago and got 174!!!! Subscribers now! Hope to get to 1000 this year :D
TH-cam is so weird sometimes though… the stuff I work hard on.. lighting, sound and storytelling etc gets less views then ones I just throw together randomly. My top video is literally the worst art Ive ever done 😂 Do you ever experience that?
literally all the time. but the video I throw together in an hour has an appeal that the better ones lack, you gotta figure out what that it is and how to incorporate it into your better content

Having viewers for content that you aren't passionate about or that you dont want to make content for in the long run is very frustrating. Been there done that 👌
Best of luck to you!
The ending...perfect 👌🏾 😅 Great tips, thanks much!
hi kelsey! i love this and usually listen to your vids like a podcast.
Ok the ending got me!
As a newer TH-camr I appreciate your insight. Also I see what you did there with the ending!
@@KelseyRodriguez Thanks great point, I will have a look at the advance analytics tab and try to make better use of it.
Thanks a bunch for all the advice!
I tried many times to start a channel but I don't get views. Nothing. I just gave up.
@@KelseyRodriguez OOH YES, love leigh and valerie uwu they're really masters of their craft~ thank you so much for the input😭💖wow
Thanks for this. My content is in Spanish and I don't know if it'll ever amount to anything, but I'll try.
Maybe offer subtitles in english? There are plenty of big creators that don’t speak english though!
Great video. And ending! 😂👌 thanks again for the quality content
Hey kelsey!!!
I also just have loads of playlists so you could just pop one on and listen in the background if you wanted
thanks so much for your videos! 🧚🏻
I appreciate you videos so much!
Thank you for always sharing such helpful information! 😊
I always wanted to start over but after posting 1 art in instagram i suddenly feel terrible again. I need to know how to detach and just stop caring about likes and views but it's harder than it sounds
Thank you for the wonderful video! P.S. Squarespace is super cool!
Perfect ending - well done :)
The painting looks so pretty!
aaa thank you Jemma!! 💗💗
I love the way you ended the video 😂 Point well made!
I would’ve drawn out the ending. 😅
thank you for the information
Hello Kelsey, thanks for the video, i'll apply your advices for my next uploads.
you've gained a sub
Thank you very much!
I finally started my channel as well, I still have a lot to figure out but at least I started posting which is what counts! Your videos help a ton ✨✨
What partner are you using with Squarespace and have print on demand? I'd love to have a customizable print shop but have no idea how to do it with print on demand.
I use theprintspace! their costs are high to make giclees but the quality is excellent!
@@KelseyRodriguez thank you! I'll look them up!
Yaaassss!!!
@@KelseyRodriguez thank you. Its really helpful, i was wondering if i should continue or not with my cell phone
in a way, video editing feels like another art medium 👩🏻🎨 it’s really fun but i take so long lol
Thanks for this. ❤
@@KelseyRodriguez Thanks Kelsey! I’ll keep that in mind
@@mikenoneofyourbusiness7122 For my own channel. I haven’t started it yet just asking for ideas.
i dont think i will ever spend a lot of money on a camera, its honestly not something I could see myself getting when i could put the money towards a PhD, but i do youtube as a hobby not is a job, which is the big difference
Love this vidddd
That ending got me lmao😂
how do you know whether this particular thing works for particular channel?
You can see all of this info in YT analytics for your channel and on Socialblade for other channels
❣️❣️❣️
Using these comments to find more artists to follow on youtube
"bye" ._.
I'm can't. BAHAHAHA
Btw... Could u please make a video about perspective while drawing different poses..?? 🥲
I HOPE I DIDN'T WRITE IT IN A BAD FORM😭😭😭😭.. It's just lately I wanted to finally make a step to draw from different angles, but it's so hard...
༼;´༎ຶ ༎ຶ༽.. And... Btw, what do u usually do, when it comes to character design?? Like.. I know at first I need to understand the concept of my oc... To become it for a sec!) I know how they react in different situation.. But.... It's sooooo haaaarrrd when it comes to making their design..... 😭.. Could u give some tips... 🥲...?
Honestly, since TikTok TH-cam audience is stagnant. Worse for artist.
Thank you so much Kelsey for the substance you provide for us, everything you post is a gem!! 🤌🏽✨
