      You wouldn't do it the way Sekiro does it,but it's very much possible. You usually hit the blade to the ground and also out of line with you and then step on it. I do Italian Longsword training so Japanese swordsmanship might also do it.

  • @danielhounshell2526
    @danielhounshell2526 4 ปีที่แล้ว +237

    disclaimer: there's actually no evidence that the ninjato ever existed historically. It was a later invention primarily from the entertainment industry. Even if you think about it logically the ninjato makes no sense, why would a ninja, who relies on infiltrating places without anyone suspecting him, wear a uniform or carry a sword that could uniquely identify them as a ninja, especially when swords were so heavily restricted during large portions of Japanese history, and having one would draw unwanted attention to them. Ninja didn't really operate by skulking about in shadows and doing parkour, they dressed like the people in the place they were infiltrating, gained entry without drawing attention to themselves, and did what they needed to do, which was mostly gathering information. They were the spies of their time, and operated as such. This isn't to say that the skulking and assassinations never happened, because they did, but that was a very small part of what ninja did, and when they needed to assassinate someone, dressing like a commoner and hiding a dagger was often a much more effective option.

    • @RiFeX2703

    • @kranvagoun2240
      @kranvagoun2240 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Corrupted Im not sure that's the case. As far as I've heard there are two possible explanations why we thought they even had a black uniform. First is because the illustrations of the Edo period in which it was common for people to wear masks. As it was to expensive to get a fancy mask, people usually bought simple black robes with black masks and media today use that as a reference for a ninja. Second is that they used black robes for a theatrical purpose. Moving props from the background "without being seen" so that they don't disturb the play. The idea like the green screen today if you will. Even without those two reasons I don't see why they would need a uniform because they were like hired commandos in a sense. I might be wrong though. If anyone has any information that is more accurate I'd like to know.

Not to mention they obviously aren't historians, so most of the history they talk about is basically at the level you would learn from pop culture. That said, I feel like I have to point out there is no historical instances of a "Ninjato" sword, sure there where straight swords and short swords like the wakizashi, but the whole idea of a Ninja/Shinobi only sword is 100% a modern myth. That's not to say Shinobi may not have had their own particular type of weapons they may have carried, but that our modern idea of a Ninjato was not one of them, and there are 0 surviving sword that would fit that description, as most that do are only a hundred years old or so, nothing correct to the period in which Ninja/Shinobi were active.

    I think people wanted the experts react to Sekiro because of the posture mechanic (deflections rather than direct blocking to break through an opponents guard). Additionally, Wolf received the sword from Kuro and is an Ashina Katana, however the Interior Ministry shinobi do wield "Ninjato", so it was a narrative choice.
