    i rewatched this last year, since i was in the mood. the series is mostly tame, with Blair (the cat lady) being the target of fan service when she shows up. the story is quite unique with its mix of action, comedy, and it's well placed introduction of horror elements. the basic gist given from the first episode is the main characters are students of an academy that train protectors of the peace. to which the Grim Reaper is the headmaster. it can generally be said that half the student body are capable of transforming into weapons, which are wielded by their partners. the goal of each student is to hunt down 99 souls of the corrupt, followed by a single witch's soul in order for their weapon partner to be powerful enough to be wielded by the Reaper

    "Wait, what the fuck was that?" is a pretty good synopsis of the show. It's just a fun ride. It's generally pretty tame, but there are some moments of fanservice, which are the ecchi bits. Also, the OPs and EDs for GATE are pretty solid, and the OP for The Greatest Demon Lord is Reborn as a Typical Nobody goes way to hard.

    "call of the nigh" (yofukashi no uta in japanese) is an anime with amazing op and ed done by the same band. Actually the writer was initially inspired by that band's song called "Call of the night" (which is why she named it like that) and asked them to do the music for the anime and use some of their songs. Obviously the song called call of the night is used as the ed and an original song called "daten" is the op. They are FIRE. They even have some great FIRST TAKE performances!
    edit: forgot to mention the nname of the band is creepy nuts!

    Soul Eater in art style is pretty much Disney characters with Tim Burton backgrounds, the whole thing starts as kind of a light hearted Halloweeny theme then gets darker in themes, although I would describe it's more serious elements as body horror, rather than gore/blood, it strays more to the former than the later.
    The premise is kids go to witch hunter school, some people are the hunters, others have the power to turn into weapons for those hunters to use, when a hunter kills a target, the weapon eats the targets soul, thus the name, with the goal of each team of Meister (the hunter) and weapon(s) being to collect 99 evil human souls, and a witches soul so that the weapon can evolve and become a weapon for death to use against the main antagonist whom I won't name here.
    The plot starts out as more of a villain of the week slice of life deal before the main antagonist becomes active and the real plot begins to come out.
    As for the anime, honestly, I would read it rather than watch it, at best do both. What the anime does well is great, but it hit a hard wall a bit over halfway through when it caught up to the manga, and then devolved into mediocre filler with a non-cannon anime only ending, pretty much the same as the first full metal alchemist anime did, which is why it's one of the most wished for properties out there to get the treatment FMA did with brotherhood, because what happens in the manga after the anime went off in the wrong direction is amazing and really deserves to be properly animated.
    But sadly, it never has been, and to my knowledge, there are no current plans either.

  • @Gobi_no_inu90

    So a quick rundown for Soul Eater.
    A Death God runs a school for demon / witch hunters. The students are split up as Meisters (Weapons welders) and Weapons (students who literally transform into weapons) and their goal is to hunt 99 demon souls and 1 witch souls to rank up.

  • @LuminantLion
    @LuminantLion 2 ปีที่แล้ว +47

    You'd love Soul Eater bro, no doubt about it, it's such an underrated anime that needs to be watched by everyone, it's such a cult classic. Though it does diverge from the manga at around episode 36 I think? You should definitely read the manga after watching the anime
    It's like a shounen that's halloween themed
    there's demons and bloody action and psychological conflict
    It's about a group of students that attend the Death Weapons & Meisters Academy (DWMA) in pairs(usually) of students who can turn into weapons and students who wield them. They hunt demons and let their weapon partner eat the demon soul to strengthen them. The main goal is to let them eat 99 demon souls and then 1 witch soul to evolve them into a "Death Scythe". The school is run by Death and any student who attains Death Scythe status can work as his partner. But there's a greater evil underneath it all, something the students weren't ready for.
    Also, seasons consisting of 12/24 episodes is a pretty new concept for anime. Soul Eater aired in 2006 and had 51 episodes. No season breaks.

I personally love this anime (and I love how the final episode goes unlike many - I love the climax and ending and how the story gets resolved). I actually consider this my 'Halloween anime' - I re-watch it every year in October. You'd love it & it's perfect timing (to at least start it) - if you watch it, you NEED to watch Episodes 1-3 which are 'prologue episodes' that introduce our main characters. @@GOTGames Made in Abyss is a good example for openings that show not in the slightest the tone/core of the show in the opening. I still haven't worked up the courage to start Season 3 after what the movie at the end of Season 2 did to me. The art in this anime is so pretty, and the character designs are so cute, but the story is like a cruel collab between Lovecraft and Harlan Ellison.

    Soul eater is a fantastic Halloween watch. It’s verrry burton-esque. It also takes place in a different worlds america! Probably cause the author really wanted to make a Death Valley joke but it’s an amazing time. Especially if you go read the manga afterwards, canon did diverge as many did back then.

    Tommy Heavenly/February6 (Tomoko Kawase) was basically the Miku Kobato of the 90s early 00s. She had 3 musical projects, The Brilliant Green which was kinda Alt Rock, Tommy February6 was a synth-pop journey and a few years later Tommy Heavenly6 was her goth rock project. She was also a host on MTV, a model, TV personage, everything I expect Miku will become in the future haha

    So many years have passed but the first Soul Eater opening is still one of my favorites ever and I still love rewatching some moments, that make me laugh every time. This anime is sooo chaotic and hilarious (but it also has dark plot episodes, so it is one of the best anime)
    And
    1. Yes, moon and sun laughing all the time, it's just part of the unusual style of this anime
    2. There is ecchi here, but not too much. And the cat-witch is constantly undressing and Soul always ends up with a fountain of blood from his nose. It's just one of those constant jokes.

  • @Crazy_Sunset
    @Crazy_Sunset 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    It's been a while since I've watch Soul Eater, but it's definitely worth watching! I've always liked the manga's ending better (since the show deviates from the original story at some point half-way through) but the anime isn't bad at all. And don't worry, anything "ecchi" or lewd in it it's mostly used for comedy lol.
    As for openings to watch next, I would recomend Gintama's openings since you seem to be working your way around reacting to animes with lots of openings. They are all consistently good, and some of them are even amazing. They are a ride to react to, to say the least.

    • @smward87
      @smward87 ปีที่แล้ว

      The anime came out before the manga was even halfway done. So it deviated because it outpaced the manga. Instead of just ending on a cliff hanger until the manga continued, they just did their own thing and told their own story.

    The idea of Soul Eater is that all the kids are either apprentices of the Grim Reaper or of the Repaer´s Scythe, and go hunting down souls that refuse to go to the afterlife...with the villains being either witches that refuse to die, or their allies. But yeah, in Death City, moon is always smiling.

    Here I come answering questions once more in a completely spoiler-free way.
    Basically, Soul Eater looks *really* messed up, but the anime itself is actually really funny. It was animated by studio bones which always will and has delivered amazing animation.
    Secondly, for the anime genres. We have a lot, and by seeing your reactions you really like shounen (AOT or Soul Eater for example). To literally translate shounen, it would be 'young man'. So shounen animes are basically animes that include action, adventure, and fighting either monsters or other supernatural things.

    Soul Eater was my first anime- it's been in my life longer than I've known BTS, Stray Kids, and TXT which is crazy. I definitely recommend it after you finish Attack on Titan! It's only 51 episodes on Netflix (correct me if I'm remembering wrong) and is really great for someone just getting into anime. It starts out more as you would expect (a bunch of kids that fight bad guys going to school) but then in the second half it REALLY takes a turn on the more serious/dark side. It has great humor and plot (it can get gory at parts during the fight scenes). The naked cat witch lady you kept seeing is really only like that in the first half of the show lol so if that type of fanservice content is stuff you don't really want to see she isn't in every episode. Overall in my opinion a very classic anime that has a lot of love that I believe you will really enjoy!
    (P.S. can't wait to see you finish reacting to the Fairy Tail openings! Hope you end up doing Black Clover endings as well 💜)

    Soul Eater is weird in that it starts out pretty ecchi and gets tamer pretty quickly. The manga it was based on started out as a goofy three shot series with lots of Naruto-style barely-safe-for-publication nudity and Maka's acrobatic fighting style leading to lots of panty shots, with one episode about each of the hero/meister teams. Once the manga got picked up as an actual series those elements got dialed back a lot. When it got adapted to an anime, things got dialed back even further, with most of the panty-shots removed. (Though this leads to a weird situation where Maka's long coat often mimics the elaborate physics from the manga shot-for-shot, while her skirt violates physics in all sorts of ways to maintain censorship without changing the camera angle. It can be a little uncanny to see them next to each other even if you don't know the history.)
    Maka's acrobatic scythe fighting techniques are so flashy and dynamic that many of them were incorporated into Ruby's fighting style for RWBY, especially in the first season.

    There's a ton of different categories for anime, many being sorted by which audience it's intended for. As example many actionpacked/adventure series like this, Fairy Tail, Naruto, Dragon Ball, One Piece etc. are usually sorted as "Shonen" anime, meant for a somewhat younger male audience (13-17ish old) even if all kinds of ppl can enjoy it. These may still display some blood during fighting and what not tho despite being meant for younger audience, anime isn't as censored as western cartoons.
    "Shojo" anime is the opposite, usually more drama/romantic/magical girl driven series intended for younger female audiences.
    HOWEVER regardless of genre there's this concept called "fanservice" in anime. As in series not in the ecchi/hentai categories may still have some scenes or events happening of a bit lewd nature to well, service the fans of the manga/anime. This is why many anime's have an episode where the characters either go to a beach or a hotspring, an opportunity to have the characters in less clothing.
    The fanservice may also be intergrated in part of the comedy like "main characters falls onto a girl and accidentially feels her chest, followed by comedic pummeling of main character" or wind blowing up skirts to provide panty shots, main character gets sudden burst of classic, comedic nose bleed.

    The show is definitely a lot of fun, and the art style/atmosphere is a huge part of that. It's definitely a lot lighter in tone than Attack on Titan, but you may very well enjoy it. What I can say is that the first three episodes are individual stories that introduce the three main character pairs (well, two pairs and a trio) and just gives an introduction to the world itself; if you're interested in checking it out, I'd recommend just doing those three episodes and seeing what you think. Might make for a good three-in-one video for your 200k, or just for a Saturday show if you feel like it, without needing to commit to the entire anime right off the bat.

    Soul Eater is more or less 15 years old and the manga it’s adapted from wasn’t done when it was airing so the anime writers had to make up it’s own ending because seasonal breaks weren’t a thing yet for most anime.
    Luke have you considered watching the first episode of any anime your interested because the openings aren’t always a good way to judge a show by. That’s especially clear with you when you think a season is laid back just because the opening doesn’t show much action when that is not what happens for the majority of the season.
