This issue of Rizal’s retraction reminds me of the importance of media and information literacy, especially in this day and age of social media and misinformation. We must be reminded that we cannot take everything at face value. We must verify if the information is real or not. Moreover, we must also understand its context in its entirety. In the case of Rizal’s retraction, we needed to verify the reason behind it; if this was done forcefully by the friars, if this was done so that Rizal could be married, or if there were other reasons behind it.
Whether or not this retraction letter was written by Rizal, this must not be used against him and used to discount the value of his contributions to the country. As mentioned in the video, what he did in the past has been done and it cannot be changed. He has achieved his original goals and inspired many to act against injustice. More importantly, he has served the nation far greater than most to the point that he sacrificed his life for us Filipinos.

I feel very fortunate to be one of the students learning about this topic in class (GERIZAL) with Sir Xiao. Sir Xiao explained, as he also does in this video lecture, that the signature attributed to Rizal might have been fabricated by church officials. However, his point was that whether the signature was real or not ultimately doesn’t matter. What truly matters is the revolutionary impact of Rizal’s works, which have left a mark on our history.

This talk shows how complicated Rizal’s life and decisions were, especially with the retraction issue. Even if he did sign it, it doesn’t take away everything he did for the Philippines. He sacrificed so much for our freedom, and that’s what really makes him a hero. Sir Xiao’s explanation made me realize that history isn’t always clear-cut, it’s full of debates, but Rizal’s legacy will always inspire us.

What really stood out to me in Sir Xiao’s talk was how many nationalists are so hesitant to accept that Rizal might have retracted his beliefs. If that’s true, it challenges the very reason we’ve always seen him as a national hero-the fight for freedom and revolution. It’s a tough thing to accept because it would mean we have to rethink the whole idea of Rizal’s martyrdom and what it truly stood for. Sir Xiao’s talk really made me realize that history isn’t as simple as we’d like it to be. Heroes, even ones as revered as Rizal, are complex, and sometimes the truth is messier than we imagine.

This video tackles the controversial issue of Rizal’s retraction with depth and balance. Whether he retracted or not, it doesn’t erase his contributions to Filipino nationalism and his impact on our history. I appreciate how Sir Xiao went beyond the controversy and debate and asked the question, "What does this mean for us today?” The bottom line is that whether or not Rizal signed the document, the impact he had on the revolution, whose benefits we reap today, cannot be erased and Rizal’s writing still speaks truth to the realities we live today. I definitely agree with Sir’s statement saying, “What Rizal did for that night will not erase Rizal's greatness.”

The comments on Sir Xiao Chua's lecture reflect how Rizal's retraction continues to spark debate, showing that history is not always black and white. Whether or not the retraction is true, it does not lessen the immense sacrifices Rizal made for the Philippines and the legacy he left behind. This discussion reminds me of the importance of critically examining historical events while appreciating the lasting impact of our heroes on our nation's identity.

Honestly, knowing the issue behind the retraction of Rizal’s work really opened my eyes to the issues of history. Regardless of whether he signed that retraction or not I still think that it should not take away from everything that was done for out country. Thus, for me his sacrifices and his dedication to the Philippines independence are true face of a hero. As this discussion made me realised, history is always aligned with debates and ambiguity but Rizal is still encouraging us to build for a better Philippines.

Sir Xiao's talk really opened my eyes to how complicated the conversations around Rizal’s relationship with religion was, especially regarding the topic of his retraction. I didn’t know how much it actually influenced the way we view his character and legacy as a national hero. It’s intriguing how this topic still sparks debate and opens up discussions on the evolving nature of his beliefs throughout his life.

Another great episode of Xiao Talks! This made me realize that there so many different views towards Rizal and this takes me back to a class discussion we had with Sir Xiao wether Rizal deserves to be called a national hero despite having different views on him. However, we must not ignore the fact that he sacrificied a lot for our country, and that for me is a true hero.

I find this topic incredibly interesting. Even in today’s era, where information can be easily spread and verified, it’s still often controlled by a powerful few. This was even more true in the past, especially when the Catholic Church held significant influence. While there’s a possibility that Rizal did sign the retraction, it doesn’t diminish the fact that his contributions were so monumental that this act wouldn’t tarnish his legacy. Rizal remains one of the key figures who paved the way for our country’s freedom.

Thank you for this insightful episode, Sir Xiao! Indeed, one of the most debated controversies about Rizal is his alleged retraction. To this day, scholars and historians continue to argue whether he truly retracted or not. If he did, it would imply that he also married Josephine Bracken. While evidence of a retraction document exists, some claim that the Church may have forged his signature. Additionally, there is no concrete proof of a marriage or contract, which caused disputes between Rizal's family and Josephine. However, in the grand scheme of things, whether Rizal retracted or not no longer diminishes his legacy. His writings and ideas have left a mark on Filipino identity and continue to inspire countless lives to this day. What truly matters is the enduring impact of his works and his unyielding dedication to the Filipino people.

This video is really important because people usually only talk about Rizal’s works, like Noli Me Tangere, but this actually covers a controversial issue. The retraction of Rizal is especially interesting to me because it’s about a moment when he was already close to death. No matter what truly happened with the retraction, I think we can all agree that it doesn’t change the fact that Rizal was a hero. He deeply cared for the Philippines, served the community, and helped open the eyes of Filipinos to see that we are more than what the Spaniards claimed us to be and that we deserve to be treated equally. Rizal ignited a sense of nationalism in us and helped correct how Filipinos view our history. We should never forget all he contributed to our country.

Jose Rizal's retraction is without doubt a controversy that has sparked debate for years; whether or not his signature is real reclaiming his beliefs in the Catholic church. Considering that this document existed during the time of the Spanish occupation, it is understandable why it did spark debate considering the power of the Church way back then. Nevertheless, whether Jose Rizal retracted or not, such document should never erase his contributions for the revolution and for the country's liberation overall. This is a comprehensive lecture about the manner.

From this webinar, Sir Xiao presented many arguments and sources for the retraction letter. He highlighted the role of interests and biases in determining whether one will believe in the retraction letter or not. The image of Rizal is definitely based on the interests of the society and may differ based on what you want to believe in. There are many criticisms and controversies toward the retraction letter, but what happened that day will not change Rizal's impact on the country and the Philippines, which I find most important.

The question of whether José Rizal retracted his anti-colonial stance before his execution is one of the most controversial topics in Philippine history. The discussion on this retraction brings to light the complexity of Rizal's character and his final moments. On one hand, some believe the retraction was fabricated by Spanish authorities to undermine his legacy; on the other, some argue that Rizal, facing death, might have softened his position. What this debate highlights for me is how Rizal, like any human being, faced immense pressure and emotional turmoil. Whether or not he retracted, it doesn’t diminish his contributions to the revolution. If anything, the fact that this question still sparks discussions today speaks volumes about how impactful and influential Rizal's principles were. It forces us to re-examine what truly defines a hero: is it their every action, or the lasting impact they leave behind?

First and foremost, I genuinely appreciate Prof. Xiao's use of TH-cam as a platform for disseminating information about Philippine history and culture. The fact that there are so many competing views regarding Jose Rizal's life and that people continue to question whether he deserves to be honored as the nation's national hero intrigues me. Despite the fact that he may have signed the agreement, none of his inspirational deeds for Filipinos can be undone. But his contributions, which continue to motivate Filipinos, will not go ignored.

I enjoyed this talk a lot because it gave me a glimpse of the theories or ideas behind the work historians do or what the essence of history truly is. More specifically, I learned how nuance, meanings/symbols, and context matters (especially the biases, interests, or affiliation of a source) as well as the significance of comparison and scientific inquiry (especially with the authenticity and truth of a narrative) in historical activities. Seeing these particularly in (1) how the discussion of Rizal’s retraction involved things like Spain-freemason relations, Josephine Bracken and Rizal family relations, and the opposition to the Rizal law and Rizal’s heroism, as well as (2) Prof. Escalante’s thorough work on Balaguer and Moreno’s accounts on the retraction solidified my perception of Rizal and really, the field of history as deserving of much respect and reverence, and not merely reduced to “chismis.”

  • @joshaviso2775

A valuable point made in the video is the idea that Rizal's retraction, real or not, should not diminish his legacy as our national hero. The ideals which Rizal championed through his writings undoubtably shaped the country in its identity and ideals, serving as invaluable catalysts for Philippine independence; however, these writings did not succeed in doing so due solely to Rizal's sentiments but also due to the efforts and desires of the Filipinos of the time and even up until now. Thus, regardless of the truth of Rizal's retraction it can be said he simply provided a written form which united Filipinos under a shared strife, a shared desire, a shared hope for freedom which his writings had championed, a message which the Filipino people took to heart and took as their own regardless of what Rizal thought at the very end. The legacy Rizal left the Philippines was that of a unifying narrative which brought together Filipinos to revolution, a narrative of independence and freedom; should his retraction prove true, then it simply means that he was imperfect in his convictions, something we should not be vehemently repulsed by considering Rizal was simply a person, another Filipino, and in that way it kind of still elevates his legacy, that even an imperfect man like Rizal could love his country so dearly and leave a lasting impact for the good of the future generations, so too we, imperfect men and women can love our country dearly and leave a lasting impact for the good of the future generations.

The controversy surrounding Rizal's retraction and role as a national hero stems from debates about his reformist stance and lack of direct involvement in the revolution. The authenticity of his alleged retraction is also questioned, as it could undermine his earlier beliefs and criticisms of Spanish rule. Nonetheless, Rizal's contributions, particularly his novels that exposed colonial injustices and inspired nationalism, cannot be denied. While he wasn’t a revolutionary leader, his advocacy for reform and ultimate sacrifice made him a symbol of the Filipino struggle for freedom.

I appreciate this video by Xiao Talks: The Retraction of Jose Rizal, presented by Professor Xiao Chua, internal and external analysis, and primary and secondary sources. This base explanation was necessary before reading further about Jose Rizal. The statement more struck Prof. Xiao said more about "ang masa ang tunay na Bayani" (the masses are the true heroes) and also mentioned a lot of "Iisang nakaraan, maraming kasaysayan," which related to a lot of historians in terms of discussing the stories and legacy of Rizal. This letter led historians into great debate since it contains contradicting ideals of what a progressive Rizal must have had. Yet this letter inspires debates on Rizal's legacy and complicated position relative to faith and national identity. I was surprised that Rizal wrote a letter of retraction, and the whole context surrounding that letter, especially that he wrote that so he could marry Josephine Bracken in a Catholic ceremony, was enlightening and intriguing at the same time. Regardless of whether the letter of retraction is authentic, I agree with others who argue that it does not diminish Rizal's tremendous impact in the Philippines.

While I don't have a definitive belief on Jose Rizal's retraction (I'm leaning towards disbelief) both because I only learned of this recency, and that both sides look like they have an agenda to pursue their biases and sides. However, I believe that whether his retraction is real or not, it should not diminish Rizal's contributions to the country and his great actions.

at 49:45 is very relatable for us students sir. As a student we need to verify and cite if the source we red was credible enough for it to be labeled as "true" or fact. Just like in correlation to the controversy of retraction of Rizal.

It's very interesting how Rizal's Retraction continues to spark intense debates and research regarding its authenticity. This controversy has even prompted disputes over whether the Retraction was voluntary or coercive in nature. Nevertheless, despite arguments over this issue, it doesn't change the fact that Rizal inspired and contributed to the independence of the Philippines from Spain's colonization. His ideas, works, and projects provide enduring insights that are still relevant in the present society.

As one of the most renowned national heroes of the Philippines. We might only know of the romanticizations of them. This gave me a fresh perspective of Jose Rizal, as it shows his struggles for criticizing friars in the books he authored. However, this retraction of Jose Rizal may have different opinions and perspectives and may seem controversial doe to its authenticity.

It is interesting to learn about all the meticulous details surrounding Rizal’s retraction. The case was thoroughly investigated by experts and reported well by this video. Although he may have signed that document, all his works that continuously inspire Filipinos can not be reversed. Indeed, this will not undo everything Rizal has done for this nation.

I didn't know before that Jose Rizal wrote a letter of retraction and have learned a lot from this video. It is amusing to learn the details surrounding this retraction letter such as it being written in the first place was so that Jose Rizal can marry Josephine Bracken in a Catholic setting. Anyways, I have to agree with the others that said regardless whether the retraction letter is real or not; it does not change the fact that Jose Rizal has done so much for the Philippines.

I find it interesting that there are a lot of theories about the history of Jose Rizal and there are stills doubts whether he should be the country’s national hero.

Thank you, sir Chua! Indeed, there are many speculations about the retraction of Rizal against his religion of Catholicism. There were beliefs that Rizal did not sign the letter he wrote saying that he will be (like) a newly born Catholic. However, some also say that Rizal signs the letter because the dates did not match the writing. Despite this, I believe that Rizal is firm in his decisions and beliefs and he would not sign the letter himself. However, viewing the letter for his technical marriage proposal for his beloved lover, I think they could've sworn their love of each other despite the formal marriage contract they wouldn't be able to avail.

The retraction of Rizal misaligned how we understood Rizal, fighting for the freedom of Filipino through his works and writings. This video specifies the details of the retraction of Rizal and brings out possible theories that may support each claim about the retraction letter. Somehow, this interests me in the way that theories were produced because of a certain action that Rizal has taken before his death.

  • @mjolninja9358

It could have been true that Rizal wrote the retraction letter but the situation has turned Rizal’s mental state into mush, everyone can break for a moment. Even Jesus asked God why has God forsaken him.
