The Verge - how much is the average cost of a replacement bulb though, and approximately how long do they last? That was the problem with the projector that I had about a decade ago, and it would start to distort the image over time with colors that shouldn’t be there (not sure if they burned into the lens or the bulb itself was the problem).

I don't understand who would spend hundreds of dollars on a projector to watch movies and not pair it with even some very inexpensive speakers that would blow the built-in ones away.
BenQ W1070 FTW. Had it for many years. Perfect all-around and fast enough for gaming (40ft HDMI even). I've replaced the lamp once and it's all good for average size rooms. If your goal is good bright image in the middle of the day with no curtains, look for a TV. For me, the bigger, softer image of projection feels like the cinema in your home, and it's wonderful!
I've had the Epson 2150 for 3 years and it's awesome. I have it mounted high in a corner above my L-couch and a 100" pull-down screen in the opposite corner. I use blackout curtains and dimmable lights to darken the room as necessary, but it's actually bright enough that I can set the room lights to 50% and still see the image well.

Intriguing. A couple of questions... If the screen is white, how does a projector produce deep black colors? I never really thought about it despite all these years of going to the movies. Also, if the projector is set up behind the couch, basically right next to your head, isn’t the fan noise going to drive you crazy?
The short answer is they don't. The color black can't be reproduced by digital projectors as black is an absence of light. This is why movie theaters do everything they can to keep the room as dark as possible. Environments where light can't be completely controlled (such as a living room) one could use a gray screen to artificially deepen the perceived black levels and enhance contrast.
The laser projector you recommend is DLP based and has a color wheel. (The 3-LCD projector from Epson is the only one that doesn't have a color wheel, among those you recommended.)
You should also look at replacement bulb/lamp costs when determining what projector is best for you. Some are $400 while others cost around $150 or less. They will need to be replaced.
I know you mentioned using a screen for a better surface, but I use a higher lumen Viewsonic on a space I painted a dark grey, which gave me a really good contrast for the darker colors on the screen, and much easier to watch when lights are on in the room, or during daylight hours.

Sadly this reviews are just for the normal Movie watcher. A lot of informations are missing for the cinematic viewer and gamer. Missing informations about lumen brightness or about Inputlag, available inputs, fan noise in decibel and color accuracy. If keystone is enabled, the resolution is reduced and in game mode it is not possible to use. So not really a benefit.
Because the tv looks so small on her big wall but a big projector screen on the wall fits better. Also the screen is white with a small black border so it just looks better on the wall than a small black rectangle.
@@CanadianSkylights No. She was saying the screen she had was 80" because that was the minimum the projector would project. Projectors go up much higher depending on how far back you can put it and zoom. In most cases 300 inches is the limit. She was showing much bigger images on her wall without the screen. Also consider the cost of a projector at 700 bux to an 80 inch tv. Big difference in price.
My roommate and I scored a cheap enterprise grade projector from goodwill when I was in college. The resolution was poor but it was super bright and threw a huge image in our apartment. Before that we had nice TV's, but after trying out the projector, we threw them all out for the giant picture. Guests loved it and it made split screen videogames so much easier to play. Having a giant picture really is magic and I totally agree about the texture. Im thinking about spending an irresponsible amount on an LCD projector this black friday
Personally I have a surround sound setup paired with my projector and its mounted on the ceiling above me. Unless I pause or mute and have no other sound in the room like A/C its audible but barely. Unless you have a hot room with a lot of heat around your projector causing the fan to ramp up, you dont really hear it. Also don't have it next to your head you will definitely hear it then lol.

This was nice and informative! Can we learn more about the reviewer? I feel like I somewhat know the thought process behind Dieter reviewing a phone or Nilay being angry at a TV and it helps give the review context that is lacking here.
I would love it if you could review the NEC P-525UL entry laser projector line. What I have been reading online in reviews is good but NEC caters to commercial environments so far and I would like to see if it would be suitable for my dedicated home theater environment. Moving to a laser is appealing as I am on my 3rd bulb in my current projector and the price has not reduced over time for projector bulbs.
I’ve thinking of getting a projector after seeing that 75 to 85 inch 4K TVs were so much more expensive than a 65 inch tv. I can get a 1080p projector as my big movie screen and the 65 inch as my gaming screen.
They make 1080p projectors with 120hz refresh rates and game modes for gamers. Around $500-700. The image quality of a 1080p projector is pretty good too.
Yes, but not with Epson 3 LCD Projectors also, some laser projectors have a laser for each, Red, Green, and Blue, that eliminates the need for a color wheel which is what causes the Rainbow Effect in other projectors
The screen is the most important thing for projectors. Doesn't matter how expensive the projector is, if you are just projecting on a wall, you are not getting the most out of the projector. the VAVA really needs an ALR (ambient light rejecting) screen to shine. if you pair the two together, you will get the closest to an OLED tv, the picture quality is simply amazing at 100"-120". You can watch anything during the day time with all the blinds open and still get a great image. however a decent ALR PET crystal screen is going to cost you $800-1200. I highly recommend you test this out and post up another review. ALR screens come in UST (ultra short throw) and long throw format so make sure you pair the right screen type with the right projector. Even super cheap $200 1080p native projectors on Amazon will look fantastic with an ALR screen. The best OEM ALR screens are mostly made in Taiwan and assembled in China in my experience. someone on youtube took a 10 yr old $50 projector outside during the day time and pointed it at an ALR screen and the image looked amazing under bright sunlight. he painted that screen himself using $120/gallon ALR screen paint. will be a nice little art project for yourself :)
I have an Epson EH-TW7400 and I project it on the gray painted wall. I tried to project the picture also on some Elite screens samples and there was really not a big of a difference in the picture quality. So I still project it to the wall.
Aljoša Kavčič lookup Nexi tech ALR on TH-cam he has a couple of videos that show how much of a difference between plain wall and ALR screen. You will be surprised.
Can you recommend a short throw projector for a small room with little background noise and a good inbuilt speaker? Secondly, what do you think about the Xaiomi ultrashort throw projector s?
I bought a Epson 95+ on eBay for $80 with only 14 hours on the bulb. It’s an incredibly bright and sharp projector at the 140 inch screen I have made for $50
Im thinking of buying a projector for my man cave have a pretty big room and dark if I want to. Will like to know if the Epson Cinema 2150 will be better choice than LG - CineBeam HU70LAB 4K? Since there's not much money difference right now cause best buy has the LG 300dls less than original price. If you or someone that knows about this can help me will definitely appreciate it
DLPs are always sharper than 3lcd because it only has 1 chip, and vava is 6000 lumens ? Where do you get your information from it's 2500. Epson 2150 is an awesome choice I do agree
I'd love to see the true short throw projectors from LG, they have a couple of 1080p ones and a 4k Model. Also the Xiami 4k laser one is a bit cheaper than that one. There is also the BenQ 4K short throw one.
They are such a small lumen you would have to have them so close to the wall in pitch black to enjoy anything. Also most the time just 720p or lower resolution. Don't waste time thinking about those.
Thank you so much for making this video. Since movie theaters are closed I was thinking of putting one in the living room. Or maybe for backyard viewing.
@@system_eneve yeah 4K is a must if you are going to project anything over 100". I have it setup for a 120" right now on a wall but ordered a screen already, just haven't set it up yet. I haven't plug in my PS4 Pro yet but I will definitely check it out this weekend. HDR does make the picture look nicer but at the expense of brightness. To me 4K by itself is fine with me though. I think you need a much brighter projector or TV to really enjoy HDR properly. Yeah the sound coming out of here is pretty awesome and loud. I do wish they would've integrated a sub channel within the projector though. It seems big enough to do so. I need to get a longer HDMI cable for ARC though so I could hook it up to my Atmos setup. Maybe an optical cable would be more feasible though.
Nice review I'm looking for a good projector for a while now, but, still confusing witch one is better, definitely too much choice and a lot of factors like daylight and room size....
I currently bought my epson 2150 on sale for 500 dollars. It's the best purchase I have ever made. The projector is outstanding with its contrast, color, and brightness. I can easily watch football through out the day with some sun light. Then at night the image is crisp and bright for movies. There's sometimes with peak bright scenes I have to look away because it can be so bright. The epson 2150 knocks it out of the park. The big onlydown side its not a 4k projector. I don't personally find it to be a huge downside. In my experience I could barely notice the difference between uhd and HD. I have been a editing video for years. The only differences I can notice is usually the details in close ups shots. So honsetly I'm sticking with 1080p projectors until 4k projectors can come down in price. They are currently starting at a thousand for the cheapest one.

Missing informations about lumen brightness or about Inputlag, available inputs, fan noise in decibel and color accuracy.
If keystone is enabled, the resolution is reduced and in game mode it is not possible to use. So not really a benefit.
+1
You dont like the look of a TV but you are good with an 80" screen in your apartment? Lol
Because the tv looks so small on her big wall but a big projector screen on the wall fits better. Also the screen is white with a small black border so it just looks better on the wall than a small black rectangle.
@@PimpTwzt it's an 80" vs a 70"...
The difference between that old projector you had and current day projectors.. home theater projectors... will blow your mind.
It also would have been nice to hear about how loud they get, but still a very good Video!
?
Personally I have a surround sound setup paired with my projector and its mounted on the ceiling above me. Unless I pause or mute and have no other sound in the room like A/C its audible but barely. Unless you have a hot room with a lot of heat around your projector causing the fan to ramp up, you dont really hear it. Also don't have it next to your head you will definitely hear it then lol.
they are all loud, if you want quietness go for LED/laser, LG's are often whisper quiet at medium brightness
Thx Guys!
i’ve got an Acer H7550BD, great DLP 1080p projector, with 2 built in 10w speakers and 3D capability, i love it! it gives a crazily realistic picture too
Ahaha when I first saw the epson I got an immediate flashback to elementary school with those projectors and smart boards... smh such a throwback
Epson 2200 vs EF12? Can you recommend which one?
I wonder if the Epson 2150 Projector the Epson EH-TW5600 or Epson EH-TW5700?! No love for the the Epson EH-TW7100 (3800 4K PRO-UHD Projector)?
How about LG CineBeam/Minibeam short-throw projectors?
They are great for the price and you can place them 20cm from the wall
Thank you so much for making this video. I wish you guys would make a separate to you for like the best budget projectors. Since movie theaters are closed I was thinking of putting one in the living room. Or maybe for backyard viewing.
Where are the Nebulas?! A bit underpowered but the all-in-one package is perfect for the average consumer!
Even I was hoping that it'll be part of the review bcos of its compact nature
I would have liked to see some more consumer friendly projectors too.
They aren't really living room projectors or at least not permanent ones
the nebula cosmos max is a new 4k projector that works like a charm
This!
Which one do u think is best for a really large wall and the projector is like 10 to 15 feet away from the wall?
This was nice and informative! Can we learn more about the reviewer? I feel like I somewhat know the thought process behind Dieter reviewing a phone or Nilay being angry at a TV and it helps give the review context that is lacking here.
is this a sequel of americano the movie 2 soundtrack at 9:09
what about the really cheap one (~50€) like the ones from DBPower ?
thank god, i finally found an information vid about beamers,.. manny thanks !!!
What pop screen are you using and where to get it?
Is the rainbow effect still a thing with DLP projectors?
Yes, but not with Epson 3 LCD Projectors also, some laser projectors have a laser for each, Red, Green, and Blue, that eliminates the need for a color wheel which is what causes the Rainbow Effect in other projectors
Needs more ads, this video was expensive. 20+ next time please.
They will make it back+ profit just on the recommendation web page on their website
LOL
can you do a video on Epson 1060 and 880x?
@@AtlantaGuns I don't like ALR screens. The main reason is that they have a hot spot. In my opinion, this ruins the picture.
@@AK__Productions what does hot spot mean? looks fantastic to me, almost OLED quality.
It means that picture is the brightest in one place an less bright in other. Most often in the center is the brightest if you sit in the center.
How about InFocus projectors
And also please check DLP with LED projector
DLP chip with led InFocus
Can you recommend a short throw projector for a small room with little background noise and a good inbuilt speaker?
Secondly, what do you think about the Xaiomi ultrashort throw projector s?
Thank you for creating this video, I really enjoyed your perspective and content.
What about Optoma UHD35 or UHD38
I bought a Epson 95+ on eBay for $80 with only 14 hours on the bulb. It’s an incredibly bright and sharp projector at the 140 inch screen I have made for $50
Hey Verge, please make a comparison of portable projectors for bedroom that projector to the ceiling
I kickstarted the new Anker 4K Cosmo Max last year for $1k, got it last month. 1500lumen. VERY pleased with the result.
please make a comparison between laser projectors similar to vava. Xiaomi has similar models at a lower price
Thank you for this video! Very professional and informative video compared to the crazy number of complicated and or unprofessional videos on youtube.
Thank you for making this video, super helpful! I didn’t know where to start, so this is perf! Thanks again!
If you or someone that knows about this can help me will definitely appreciate it
THIS IS MY DREAM VIDEO!!! IM SUCH A FANGIRL FOR PROJECTORS!
Does it get hot when using for a long time?
DLPs are always sharper than 3lcd because it only has 1 chip, and vava is 6000 lumens ? Where do you get your information from it's 2500. Epson 2150 is an awesome choice I do agree
what is the diference between the epson 2150 and the epson tw 5820 ? (i bought the second one)
I'd love to see the true short throw projectors from LG, they have a couple of 1080p ones and a 4k Model. Also the Xiami 4k laser one is a bit cheaper than that one. There is also the BenQ 4K short throw one.
I jumped in with this Vankyo from Walmart lol I love it.
What about compact Projectors like Nebula and Xiaomi? Are they good for a long run. I think these two devices are LED based
They are such a small lumen you would have to have them so close to the wall in pitch black to enjoy anything. Also most the time just 720p or lower resolution. Don't waste time thinking about those.
Thank you so much for making this video. Since movie theaters are closed I was thinking of putting one in the living room. Or maybe for backyard viewing.
Just got the Nebula Cosmos MAX and I gotta say it's pretty awesome.
What's the experience like?
I've got the 1080p version.
Same here! I can't wait for the next firmware update though to add some new features and fix some others.
@@michaelw6762 it's pretty sweet. 4k looks surreal. Got HDR on PS4. The sound is very good. Picture is nice and bright on my wall no screen.
Maybe an optical cable would be more feasible though.
what is the best projector to start out with projection mapping
Nice review
I'm looking for a good projector for a while now, but, still confusing witch one is better, definitely too much choice and a lot of factors like daylight and room size....
I have the 2150 it works very well you won't be disappointed
What about the xiomie lazer short throw projector?
Im watching this because I'm returning my 3rd EUG HD 8500Lumen projector because of brokenness. Amazing. Truly. For about 3 days. All 3. FML
Hey i am also looking for wall projecter . But still not get in my budget. Im looking for 3d one
Thank you Alix, that was informative and genuinely useful.
They are currently starting at a thousand for the cheapest one.
where did you get that deal from?
@@sureshkadthan7556 a military base.
How about the Xiaomi Mijia 4K Laser Projector?
Try using Xgimi Projectors. I have a H1 and its pretty good.
Which one can I hook up gaming systems to?
this was a huge help. Bought the Epson and love it. Thanks!
What about (Xiaomi Mi Smart Compact Projector)
is it really the cheap & miracle flagship killer?
