The Prom follows Dee Dee Allen (three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep) and Barry Glickman (Tony Award winnerJames Corden) are New York City stage stars with a crisis on their hands: their expensive new Broadway show is a major flop that has suddenly flatlined their careers. Meanwhile, in small-town Indiana, high school student Emma Nolan (newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman) is experiencing a very different kind of heartbreak: despite the support of the high school principal (Keegan-Michael Key), the head of the PTA (Kerry Washington) has banned her from attending the prom with her girlfriend, Alyssa (Ariana DeBose). When Dee Dee and Barry decide that Emma's predicament is the perfect cause to help resurrect their public images, they hit the road with Angie (Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman) and Trent (Andrew Rannells), another pair of cynical actors looking for a professional lift. But when their self-absorbed celebrity activism unexpectedly backfires, the foursome find their own lives upended as they rally to give Emma a night where she can truly celebrate who she is.

NICOLE KIDMAN KILLED THIS PERFORMANCE. PERIOD.
Okay so the one thing I don't quite like is how they have Emma smiling throughout the whole performance, especially when she says how awkward it is or is made to do jazz hands. She shouldn't be amazed at Angie and enjoying the performance. She should be awkward and still find it all weird and pointless. Not to compare but Caitlin in the broadway version was able to capture the introvert and awkward side of Emma. This (and reviews from people who've actually seen the original musical) has me fearing that movie Emma is just gonna smile all the time even when things just suck. I'm hoping that she has more depth.
I saw the movie a couple days ago, and i really thought Jo ellen did an amazing job.. not as awkward as caitlin but that could be a directors thing? but a very believable performance
To me it seems most of the time she's smiling here are awkward smiles.
@@BellasLife97 oh yeah. Its definitely a directors choice. Based on what I've seen Jo seems to be doing a great job with what they're giving her. This just isn't exactly how I pictured Emma and that's probably on me. I hope enjoy the portrayal more in more context.
@@rae0993 My only major dissapointment with the movie was that they didnt add more scenes of emma and alyssa, considering they had the time and ability to add scenes. They had great chemistry and the actors did so well, but one kiss at the end like the show... just felt like the film was more about deedee and barry and less about emma... which could have made it amazing.

Personally I didn't like the number, the choreography or the performance very much. I cringed a couple of times. But in its defense and to give the movie the benefit of the doubt: This is just one number which is part of an entire movie, and it might well be one of the "smaller" numbers. I guess we'll have to see the whole thing first. Perhaps I'll think you're right in the end, who knows?

I thought this too! For a jazzy number about bravery and "zazz", the staging is extremely boring.
Yes and whats up with the lighting, it did more work in this scene then Nicole danced...it needed the Fosse film style of Cabaret's 'Maybe This Time' & Rob Marshall's 'Roxie' number; the back and forth shift between fantasy and real life...how much would it cost for an empty soundstage, pin spots, and mirrors to create a real Fosse number.
I swear I'm going to watch the entire movie five times over before it comes out and I am so so so okay with that hahahaha.

I am so excited to watch this, love that they kept some of the original choreography but... WHO EDITED THIS??? So many camera changes, very distracting. Theyre not swift and smooth, they're quite harsh and take from the number rather than add to it... if the whole movie is like this I am a bit worried
Sadly film directors these days don’t know how to film a musical number. They rely on too many closeups, something you won’t see much of in the classic MGM musicals.
