Man, this is one of the most helpful videos on fuel pumps I could find. Nailed at least 3 of my symptoms on the head!!! Thanks for taking the time to post this video.
Hi man I have a problem with a 99 corolla stalls and while driving no power and hesitates but when it starts and is just sitting in idle it’s just fine but stalls When put it in gear
@@martingonsalez6635 I have a 98 Corolla with the same exact issue! Except mine will shut off before I put it into gear if it sits for too long. My car has stalled multiple times when driving. It starts up just fine and will continue like it didn’t just die. Before changing the fuel pump, I just found out that it could be the fuel pump relay! Did you have any luck changing the fuel pump?
I like it when you list the symptoms of a bad fuel pump for people that are inexperienced. They can learn a lot before they break down and actually get the issue taken care of
My car hasn't died while driving before, but my car does hesitate to start and hesitate to accelerate, but I was told that it was because my car was just old. My car is failing to start right now, and this was extremely helpful to get me closer to fixing it. Thank you so much
I just had this happen to me yesterday. Car completely died while driving on a mountain top. I have a 2011 Versa and just had a tune up and this literally explained what happened thank you ❤️
As long as there are gas fueled cars out there, this will be timeless info. Straight talk, to the point, yet gives you a rounded concept of the fuel pump function and its issues. Thanks!
Excellent video! A nice very short intro and he gets right to the point. My fuel pump failed yesterday in the 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan. Everything he listed 1-5 happened all the way to van dying while driving. Thank you sir for your knowledge and time.
These are great tips. My Walbro Fuel Pump lasted 7 years. I am driving a 96 Jaguar XJ 6 already 12 years as a daily driver with over 280,000 miles on the engine. The symptoms are correct. In my case, my old fuel pump became very noisy, as on the old Jags between 95 -97 the single pump model , the pump is submerged in the tank, and literally you can hear it kick in when do cold start. I placed the same Walbro Fuel Pump and keep driving my car with unleaded fuel only and never going below 1/2 in my 23 gallon tank. In order to extend the life of the pump, remember keep them cold, do not run them hot, driving with low gas in the tank. Very informative video.
Couldn't start my 1998 BMW Z3 1.9 L today 99,000 miles , later it would start , but when driving suddenly the rpm dropped off zero for a split second before recovering. Suspected fuel line clog. Your video I think is spot on. Thanks for explaining so concisely.
Good video! I’m a amateur mechanic, I’ve worked for O’Reilly Auto parts off and on between 2005-2017. Enjoyed how you relayed and presented the information.

My car - started then dies- that's another symptom as she hasn't enough fuel delivery to keep going after the cold start enrichment shuts off ! Thanks for that video ! Easy understood and clear ! Top advice
Straight to the point and I have every single one of the symptoms. I tried replacing fuel filter and spark plugs before, wish i wouldve just watched this video to start. thanks a loy
Very helpful. My 2005 highlander has almost 195,000 miles on it and I am certain after checking the battery, alternator and fuses that it’s the fuel pump. It turns over, but will not start and I don’t hear the fuel pump motor turn on, complete silence. Now I’ll have to have it towed into a garage that has an honest and good mechanic. I just tried troubleshooting it myself beforehand, so I won’t be totally in the dark when they tell me what’s wrong with it . Thanks for a clear and easy to understand explanation.
Excellent fuel pump failure symptoms analysis. Thank you. I think mine is the symptom of driving along and the engine just fails and have to pull off the side of the road and then after about 10 minutes can start it back up. I will change the fuel pump.
These signs are so similar to what was happening to my car. Removed the injectors and cleaned them, one was clogged. Checked the fuel filter that I changed only 5000km ago, it was throwing dirty brown gasoline. Thought that the fuel pump was the culprit, changed it and cleaned the fuel tank. Lets see how she runs now. Thanks alot for this video.
Lol, again I have 179,000 on this 2000. I have driven it twice. Both times it died while driving. Both of my trips totaled approx 12 miles. That included driving home. It has a fuel rail I think. I'm going to find a Volvo guy like you to come diagnose it, see if it's more trouble than its worth. Thanks I wish I'd known about your vids before I bought it.😅

It's sad after wasting a lot of money on repairing this particular problem from 5 mechanics of which none of them knew it's the fuel pump problem. I find the solution here. Thank u so much for ur help. I will try and replace the fuel pump. And update here for any performance change. Thanks again.
Depends of your car, just go on website like www.repairpal.com and type in your car make, model, and year and the type of service you need like Fuel Pump Replacement and it gives a good quote range of about what type of price you're looking at... good luck
My car has 227K, I've never replaced the fuel pump. I have to crank it about 7 times, then stop, crank it again and then it'll start. Just recently it started studdering and hesitating upon acceleration. And tonight, it died while I was driving, pulling out of a gas station parking lot. You're video is great, I hope I have found my problem.
Would a faulty fuel pump effect the alternator, starter, battery and spark plugs of a vehicle? I have a 2009 Toyota Camry that stalled as I tried to get on the freeway.
Robert, thanks just replaced fuel pump on my 2003 Volvo v70 XC. Had all these symptoms you decribed. I thought it was water in the gas and that I had had in other cars over the years. That was a dead end rabbit hole I went down.
What a likeable guy... he's replied to damn near all the ppl who have liked his vids. No bs, straight to the point and very professional w/o the "salesman mentality." #Baller
This was so helpful. My 94 Toyota pickup got a new batteries after sitting for a while and drove but was hesitating and stuttering. Now it won’t start and there is no fuel coming through the fuel filter.
You never cease to be on point and good enough straight to the point, I always look forward to get your advices and they work, Im not a mechanic but ever since i watched your videos, I am able to maintain my cars, only taking them to some mechanics when i have little time to work on them, you are a blessing to the world, with lots of love and admiration from Botswana
I have a 2000 Nissan Sentra GXE 1.8 L. 225,000 miles, replaced cam and crank sensors.. awhile back..runs good. Now it just stalls while driving and then hard cranks to start back...(for about 3 weeks now)I have checked the fuel pump relay and it is okay. After a lot of research on this matter..you hit the number one issue "stalls while driving" which I thought it could be the fuel pump as well. because it just runs to good otherwise. Does not use or leak oil for that many miles and I love the car...so I will be purchasing a fuel pump and installing this week...Thank you for your expert advice..
raynutty82 why and where did you cut a access hole? So you wouldn’t have to drop the tank? I cannot picture trying to change the pump without dropping the tank.
@@markkeeton9357 Pull the back seat. Wrap a string around studs that bolt the seat down. Measure over 6 inches toward passenger side from the string. Make the cuts. Works like a dream. Thank you my friend for being here for us....I bought a 2003 grand marquis for $300 last week and it has set for over a year...I just got through with removing the old fuel pump a d now getting ready to install the new one but not sure just yet how tight the little bolts should be torqued...I'm hoping that since there was no pressure at the fuel rail, a new pump is all it needs...maybe I will be able to get it running tomorrow and next week get the insurance and tag
@@RobertDIY Thanks Robert! I was busy in my yard working on the car and thought instead of going and buying a manual, I could simply check the internet which has tons of earthly information...but no matter because I got it done and there are no leaks and my 200 dollar grand marquis runs like new...at least new to me
All five symptoms.. Got em.. And now ,after getting gritty, greasy and dirty in my driveway I have a 270k motor that starts immediately, accelerates like I never knew it could and leaves me awaiting the next breakdown. Likely cv joints. Thanks for the tips. Good things to you
I have 276,000 miles on my van. When I tried to start it, takes a couple tries to get it to start. And my wife says it feels like there’s no power when we accelerate... Thank you for sharing this video... this was very helpful. probably going to change it this weekend
Robert you're a damn wizard brother. I literally punched my fuel tank after listening to your video. My God it worked.. was no longer stranded in a snow storm. Got me to the gas station. God bless Robert.
Very good... My 1995 ford ranger would just cut off driving along... Then it would turn over,, but not start.. I took the core out of the test port,, turned the switch on ... no gas come out the test port.. replaced the in-tank fuel pump.. good to go..
Your video tells all the symptoms and my car seems to have most of them. It's 94 Camry XLE,6cyl. with 259,000 on it. My car died several times yesterday, 3 of which it started again, with difficulty, but finally the 4th time, it would not start and died in the middle of the road on a corner. Luckily 2 motorists(men) got out to push my car to the side of the road. Very scary to get stuck like that. I had it towed to a local shop. He doesn't think it's fuel pump, but months ago, when towed to Toyota they said it was sending unit, inside fuel pump, but didn't have part. Got it towed home. Been months since this car died repeatedly yesterday. Started back in August, on a 30 mile journey on the freeway, died after I was at destination, over an hour before it would start. Drove it home. Went to Sears, thought it was their battery causing problem, they said, No, it's intermittent problem with solenoid in Alternator, couldn't fix it, as they were closing, so I drove home, it didn't stall. I just want to fix it once and for all. I think your helpful tips, tell me it IS the Fuel pump. Sometimes when I turn the key, I hear nothing, and nothing happens. 2nd try, it turns over twice and starts, maybe with a little hesitation. But generally does not hesitate when driving. Yesterday was the worst, and had some balking, (lurching) backing out of my driveway. Could it also be the fuel filter, are they close to each other in the car? Neither have been changed as far as I know.
Hello Robert, I'd like to thank you for this video.....this helped me with a problem I've had with my Ford ZX2 since I bought it last year. Everytime I go to start it; it has always required two(2) turn overs.....even after replacing: spark plugs, the coil , plug wires & the fuse in the engine compartment......It sounds like the next step for me is a new pump : it's either that or a new fuel rail .The car HAS 112,000.0 miles on it , and for a '98 model year, that's not many miles EACH year...anyway, thank you again for your advise.
WOW Thank you! You just solve my issue with your #1 issue. My 2001 mercury cougar 135k pos on my 3rd Transmission had recently died while driving and I needed to be towed home. My mechanic and I thought it was the alternator, being that the battery light was always on but a few days later I was in heavy traffic and she died, I was lucky she started back up. Thanks again
Lol... man every single symptom that you just said my old faithful has had this past year. It dies after running for 50 miles or so with a slow spray of fuel. I can't even hear the pump start after turning ign on, takes like 3x as long to start from two years ago, some times the rpm is really low at start and gradually climbs to 2k. I've had it for over 15 years and it just rolled over 300,000 so yea, it's beyond time. I will order a Bosch pump and filter tonight as well as replace both filters. More than happy with how it's aged over the years.
Thanks for sharing! For now, the Volvo starts pretty good and has got full performance when accelerating agressively. My 146 875 miles 850 T-5 stalled 3 times without any "Lambda sond" signal ON. I will first check the "M 103" fuel pump relay, the fuse, and change it/them if so. Any way, the fuel pump is as old as the car and will pass away. Once again, thank you very much for all your good tips from France!
Awesome answer, and this sounds like our problem. Most have told us that our issues relates to a weak battery or alternator, and had us chasing our tail. These systems on our car are fine.

Probably. Thanks for watching.
Would a faulty fuel pump effect the alternator, starter, battery and spark plugs of a vehicle? I have a 2009 Toyota Camry that stalled as I tried to get on the freeway.
No but if the car runs out of gas, none of those other things work.
Still have gas but I had to replace the starter, alternator, and battery and am lost on what else the issue could be.
rvasquez400
Could be your crank position sensor
Thank you bro this was really helpful, especially the stuttering/hesitating bit. Well done.
You are welcome.
My Nissan Murano 2004 SL is saying that last part on your video
Ouch!
Robert DIY I'm changing the fuel pump then try to see what's up
Good deal, hope that solves the problem.
Robert DIY I hope to thanks for the video
Robert, thanks just replaced fuel pump on my 2003 Volvo v70 XC. Had all these symptoms you decribed. I thought it was water in the gas and that I had had in other cars over the years. That was a dead end rabbit hole I went down.
so the new pump didn't help?
What a likeable guy... he's replied to damn near all the ppl who have liked his vids. No bs, straight to the point and very professional w/o the "salesman mentality." #Baller
Thank you for the kind words.
@@RobertDIY You're welcome Robert🙌
Thanks Robert for the info helps a lot
Great video keep up the great work God Bless!
Thanks for watching.
U The man thanks a lot Same symptoms 💯
Thanks for watching
This was so helpful. My 94 Toyota pickup got a new batteries after sitting for a while and drove but was hesitating and stuttering. Now it won’t start and there is no fuel coming through the fuel filter.
Ouch
Thanks, my truck has all of these symptoms . I came to the conclusion my truck runs better when there is more gas in it. GREAT video
thanks for watching.
Dude, awesome vid well organized and I'm subbing
Thank you.
well said. good info. thanks again sir.
You are welcome.
great info bro.

You never cease to be on point and good enough straight to the point, I always look forward to get your advices and they work, Im not a mechanic but ever since i watched your videos, I am able to maintain my cars, only taking them to some mechanics when i have little time to work on them, you are a blessing to the world, with lots of love and admiration from Botswana
thanks for the kind words.
Thanks for watching
I cut an access hole in my Tahoe and had it changed out in 2 hours! Always get your fuel pump fixed when you start noticing! You will be stranded!!!!
Thanks for sharing.
Robert DIY It definitely works! Thanks for the video!!!
raynutty82
why and where did you cut a access hole? So you wouldn’t have to drop the tank?
I cannot picture trying to change the pump without dropping the tank.
@@markkeeton9357 Pull the back seat. Wrap a string around studs that bolt the seat down. Measure over 6 inches toward passenger side from the string. Make the cuts. Works like a dream. TH-cam has a few good videos on it.
Hope this is helpful. Have a great day. REMEMBER: Surface cuts only so you don't cut into your frame. Will save 1000. by doing it yourself.
Thanks Robert for this info.
You are welcome.

Can't stop laughing @ Warning sign no: 5 ....
YOU HAVE LOT OF MILES ON THE VEHICLE !
LOL, That's my low mileage car. My daily has 412,000.

I was busy in my yard working on the car and thought instead of going and buying a manual, I could simply check the internet which has tons of earthly information...but no matter because I got it done and there are no leaks and my 200 dollar grand marquis runs like new...at least new to me
Your a well spoken, talented man.
Who seems to be patience enough to make what could have been difficult for me to comprehend- simple.
Thank you.
Thanks for your kind words.

What I wrote is true.
Have a beautiful week!
Kinda scary, you make me wanna drive around with a spear fuel pump xD
LOL, just replace it every 200,000 miles.
"daddies pump dies" 🤣
02 VW Gti 1.8 turbo. 235,000+ milage and she sputters and takes a moment to start. Very pleased on how long it lasted. Time to do fuel pump!
Thanks for watching.
All five symptoms.. Got em..
And now ,after getting gritty, greasy and dirty in my driveway I have a 270k motor that starts immediately, accelerates like I never knew it could and leaves me awaiting the next breakdown. Likely cv joints. Thanks for the tips. Good things to you
Thanks for watching and sharing.
I have 276,000 miles on my van. When I tried to start it, takes a couple tries to get it to start. And my wife says it feels like there’s no power when we accelerate... Thank you for sharing this video... this was very helpful. probably going to change it this weekend
Cool. Thanks for watching
Thanks dude you just confirmed fuel pumps bad. Excellent summary of symptoms
Cool, thanks for watching.
I'm having problems starting my 2002 audi
175k.
I'm actually going to replace fuel pump this weekend.
Thanks You for sharing
Hope it helps
Robert you're a damn wizard brother. I literally punched my fuel tank after listening to your video. My God it worked.. was no longer stranded in a snow storm. Got me to the gas station. God bless Robert.
Glad it helped.
Very good... My 1995 ford ranger would just cut off driving along... Then it would turn over,, but not start.. I took the core out of the test port,, turned the switch on ... no gas come out the test port.. replaced the in-tank fuel pump.. good to go..
Nice.
I work for pick and pull in Cumberland Rhode Island, all of the videos u put out.spot on it's nice to see someone has common sense like I do 😉
LOL, Thanks for watching.
What are you going to do?
Hello Robert, I'd like to thank you for this video.....this helped me with a problem I've had with my Ford ZX2 since I bought it last year. Everytime I go to start it; it has always required two(2) turn overs.....even after replacing: spark plugs, the coil , plug wires & the fuse in the engine compartment......It sounds like the next step for me is a new pump : it's either that or a new fuel rail .The car HAS 112,000.0 miles on it , and for a '98 model year, that's not many miles EACH year...anyway, thank you again for your advise.
You are welcome
This guy is the best I own a 98 Volvo S70 and he's helped me with so many problems
Thanks for watching.
Thanks again
you are welcome.
Lol... man every single symptom that you just said my old faithful has had this past year.
Cool.
My 99 Silverado got to 330,000 before my fuel pump died. I had warning sign #1 .. The only sign it happened so sudden.
My vehicle dies while driving. I know now after watching your video it's likely the fuel pump. Thanks for your tips of a failing fuel pump.

Car is a 2001 Ford Focus but on;y has 87,000 miles on it . Description was perfect !

Good video! My 1998 Suburban has 4 of those 5 symptoms. 225,000 miles. It's in the shop right now.
Awesome. Hope that cures it.
I would jump the fuel pump relay.

Awesome answer, and this sounds like our problem. Most have told us that our issues relates to a weak battery or alternator, and had us chasing our tail. These systems on our car are fine.
