    so they went to a starbucks to have a meeting, couldnt use the facilities because they didnt buy anything, brought their own food and beverage, which is a health code violation, then got arrested because they wouldnt leave private property. Why is this even in the news.

      Do you even know english? What does any of this have to do with race? Everything that happened with Starbucks had nothing to do with race. So, everyone getting all riled up over the situation are either stupid and can't do research to see how it's not race related or they are racist themselves.

      Whites don't see the problem because many times that whites do the same thing, no one calls the police to have them arrested. Yal just want to be blind. Yal know how to complain and whine about blacks using racial slurs towards whites and no one bats an eye. Special privilege is unknown to the ones who benefits from it.

      i manage a business, large nationwide well known chain. if someone loiters in or outside the store you offer them assistance. if they say no thank you im just going to be sitting here then you inform them that the store policy is that we dont allow loitering and you ask them politely to leave. most people are respectful and will leave. if they refuse you call the police to remove them. if this incident happened at my store the ceo of the company would probably cover his ass the same way this guy did. even though i would be following the companies policy clearly stated on signs outside the store. most of the people i have asked to leave my stores property have been white. if they were black that makes me a racist?

    I'm a black woman, but I will be fair and say, this is outrageous. If they didn't buy anything, they were loitering. Bringing your beverage in a place that sells beverages is disrespectful and, usually, against the policy. The bathroom should be for customers only, but it's okay to ask to use the bathroom. If the worker says no, people should understand. These men seem pretty arrogant to think that the manager did something racist to them. Being an adult is partly about taking ownership for your own actions and respecting the property of others.

      SBUX needs to fully disclose their policy on lingering people in the store (for whatever reason) that don't purchase anything and there is no intent to purchase. SBUX has been silent on this. They threw the manager under the bus wit no due process. Did the math, figured it was best biz move to get rid of her. If SBUX official policy now condones people just hanging out w/o purchasing, so be it. But I believe they are trying to have it both ways. When the dust settles they will lean on managers to keep loitering to a minimum in addition to keeping the store spotless and able to make 10M different beverages.

      Except records show that police were called two minutes after the men arrived. Most people aren't having the police called on them within 2 minutes of arriving at an establishment. Clearly the Starbucks employee was instantly uneasy with these guys, approached them, left, and called the cops.
      I don't think this would happen to similarly dressed and groomed white people, as these guys weren't dressed like two hobos off the street, they look like they could afford a few cups of Starbucks, when they're ready to order.
      But hey, people see things differently, so I respect your opinion, even though I disagree with it.

      Caid Johnson
      Then again, reports also show they were there for ten minutes to half an hour. Reports are conflicting, I guess.
      You claim if they were well dressed and groomed, they would've been treated better. This is the same no matter the race. Whether it's Bill Nye or Habib Fanny, if they are dressed to impress then they will likely impress. I doubt race had anything to do with it. From what I've heard, that manager was fond of kicking people out for loitering and the only time people got offended was when a couple of entitles minorities decided to trespass instead.
      I respect your opinion, too, and I'm grateful that you're civil about it, as opposed to most people on the internet.

  • @TheAutomedon

    The only reason they were arrested is because they refused to leave. It was in Starbucks right to kick them out, even if it was scummy and how they did it was ignorant. I've been kicked off a property for "loitering" while waiting for friends to arrive. Just because it's embarrassing and lame doesn't mean you can do whatever you want. I'd say just stick it to them and have them lose a customer but it didn't look like they were losing a customer anyways. You also could've had this story posted without getting arrested as there's video but I guess getting arrested is a better lawsuit.

      That may not be policy in Starbucks near YOU. Policies arise because wrongdoing, in some form or fashion, has taken place. These policies are also tailored the business location and customers of that location, that way the business doesn't just blanket the entire industry with a policy that doesn't fit certain clients. For instance, in the rougher neighbourhoods Starbucks may have a policy that you must order something in order to use the bathroom - this policy could arise for the following: 1) a addict shot up in the bathroom, resulting in an overdose, which is bad for business. 2) the idea is typically addicts spend all their money on drugs and very little on food, so the chances of them buying something like a coffee and then going in the bathroom is unlikely.
      However, on the other hand if Starbucks blanketed their entire industry with that policy it would be "rude" to customers in a suburban/low crime/low drug use neighbourhood, and they would lose customers because of it.
      This is the same with police departments; certain police departments have different policies about what they officers are allowed/supposed to do given what the local populace will tolerate. For instance, some officers ask you to step out of the car on a traffic stop in an attempt to build a connection with the individual. The department wants the individual to feel like the officer isn't "looking down on them". Some departments don't do this and require you to stay in the vehicle during a traffic stop.

I think the only poor behaviour was not warning the two guys that she will call the police if they didn't leave. This is an isolated incident. Do you believe that these two guys are the first two black people that have been in this Starbucks branch?

    I have frequented Starbucks for over 10 years. I have seen many people come in over those years, sit down, not make a purchase and have a meeting or just work on their computers. No one ever went to them and told them they needed to make a purchase. Usually the baristas are to busy, or just don’t pay attention to who’s doing what, or have those people bought anything. This story is a complete opposite of what I’ve ever witnessed at Starbucks. I’ll be interested to see how this turns out.

    • @fightthefairy
      @fightthefairy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      Karen Dobrowolski I have never seen that - if you go into a cafe of any sort, you make a damn purchase! The staff not noticing you slip in, sit at a table and start using their WiFi without buying anything does not make it okay. The toilet needed a key to access it so these two made themselves known to staff - they then admitted they weren’t going to buy anything and refused to leave when asked so the cops were called! There’s no story here, nothing to see. Move along!!!

It can take a while to prepare food, and is not like it’s dine in where everyone normally orders together and needs a waiter. They clearly didn’t plan on eating and they used the facility for free, which is against store policy. After asked to leave, they refused. She warned them she’d call the cops. Not a big deal

No we have some in our bag". Every response they gave clearly showed they had no intention of patronizing the business. Just because some get away with abusing the store privileges doesn't make it right. They were attempting to use that space as there personal office headquarters. I just want to say that when I was about 16 I used to hang out at a Second Cup with my friends. We were eventually told not to hang out there because we were not buying anything. SO we started hanging outside, and then the police started harassing us - and I think they had every right to. The owners of Second Cup were white and I am white and my friends were white. However, this Starbucks situation is different because these men are not 16 year old kids who repeatedly hang out at the place and the situation should have been treated differently. I wonder how old this starbucks employee is because she may have also been young and young people are often....hmmm The culture in AMerica needs to change to everyone treating everyone with respect.

    I'm white and I was asked to leave Starbucks when I didn't buy anything, they said "you can't sit here if you're not going buy anything" this happened about 2yrs ago in Ireland. I was on my own and i taught that was fair and I left. I think stores have a right to have that policy. In this case they should of been allowed to wait for someone because that person could be buying something. Calling the police so soon I think was racial bias also she should of talked to them! But I don't think Starbucks should have to put up with non paying customers all the time after this, it is loitering

      Even if they did kick you out, did the manager call the police, and did the police arrest you?! There’s no justifying this shit. People sit in Starbucks for hours. I know people that don’t even like coffee that go and sit in this shitty overpriced shop and never buy anything. They didn’t need to be arrested for sitting in a damn Starbucks is all I’m saying. Kicking them out is whatever. Every establishment does that.

    If a manager asked you to leave, no matter your skin color, leave. If the cops ask you to leave, no matter your skin color, leave. It's simple. Buy something small even if it is stupid if you want to stay. This is not a racist issue, it's a follow the laws of being civil issue. Not saying its understandable what the manager did by calling the cops, but he was just doing his job for the most part. Let's not pretend most places like Starbucks or any other business just let's people sit around and take up space with no intention of buying something.

      Starbucks are franchised businesses that have slightly different policies, such as who can use the bathroom. Unfortunately Philadelphia is a shithole city full of homeless people and criminals, who often use places like Starbucks to loiter. Just because you went to a Starbucks in Beverly Hills doesn't mean they will be as lenient as one in a ghetto city like Philly.

    • @donmasacre4919
      @donmasacre4919 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, that is not the problem. I'm Latino has been prejudiced by blacks, not by white, for 20 years. Your problem is a lack of intelligence and business understanding. Establishments like Starbucks are not meet-up places, are businesses, every table has value; the table is for the customer, and the WIFI is for customers, not for visitors. So you expect customers coming to your business to occupy a table, use the bathroom, and your WIFI without making a dime.

That means different locations can tell you you have to buy something if you're in there, or they can just not care. Not a single person here or anywhere has yet to refute this. As much as these jerk-offs pretend they were victimized here, the truth is (and you can verify it through watching the video of their interaction with the police) is they were obnoxious and rude. Whether they were actually intending to buy something can't be determined with any certainty. However, what is certain is they sat there with a bottle of water in a place that makes its money selling drinks, didn't not buy anything and were obnoxious and rude to both the manager and the police. Different stores, different policies. A Starbucks in an urban setting is going to have stricter policies than a store in the Suburbs. Customer only bathroom is very common and loitering is too. Don't expose yourself loitering or cause a scene and anyone can loiter without a problem. Although common courtesy would be to support the business if you are going to use their private commodities.
