    I had to weld down a hole in a shop setting. We added a foot pedal so we only struck an arc at the bottom. It was really critical that we didn't hit the sides. Playing Operation as a kid prepared me for that moment.

      this might be a stupid question but was there something preventing you from covering the holes edges with tape or something to insulate electrically?

      If you’re plug welding with stick, more times than not the hole is probably pretty small, so he probably wasn’t able to get tape in there, moreover though you wouldn’t put electrical tape around the edges because it would melt basically immediately when it’s exposed to that much heat.

      @@wjkuhl Kapton tape can hold up to ~400 degrees Celsius, which should be good enough if it's at least a centimeter or two away from the weld. Great stuff for taping hot things in general.

    Great vid... everyone who wants to learn to weld should pick up a stick 1st.. it will make learning other types of welding easier to learn.. and always remember, if it sounds like bacon frying you're welding.. if it smells like bacon frying you're on fire 👍

      @@carpediemarts705 if you get decent at TIG it will be pretty easy to carry over into anything else, and it's the most fun imo. You might be surprised at how much more "messy" the other two processes are though.

      @@bugnug5332 thanks. I was being sarcastic. I was actually told if I learned the puddle and could handle Tig, I could pick up the rest quick. I found this to be true, but with Tig being my first instinct, I feel a little gimped when dealing with the fast deposit processes of stick and mig.

      Im proof of that. Grabbed a mig first and could never get a decent weld. Spent 2 years with a Lincoln tombstone and I'm finally getting back to the mig, I'm picking it up really quickly now

    I work in a shipyard that built submarines 46 years ago and it was common to see the welders bend the rod to get in tight spaces. I even remember seeing guys weld with a mirror.

      I currently weld at a shipyard on submarines and yes, 99% of the time I am a bending the rod. Love stick for this very reason!

      @@snailloaf I did electronics wiring. I just worked there for a short time after I got out of the service till I started tech college. I saw the first 726 hull sections come together I’ve seen lots of welding over the years working in the oil field and pipeline in Alaska. I did electronics and telecommunications work at those places.

    As a millwright for many years, almost all our welding was stick welding. Nasty dirty places or outside in wind and weather where wire feed with gas was impractical or impossible. Did use mig in shop when we could but the bulk was stick. One thing I've seen over my experience is that most stick welders can weld with wire, but have seen wire welders who can't weld with stick.

    My coworker told me a story when they were working a shut down there was a weld that was needed to be made but it more than a rods length away so the guy took a couple of rods and tacked them together

    I had to weld inside of a track 2 inches deep, and only had a 1/2" slot for the rod and to look through, to keep the rod from short out on the sides, I used a piece of 5/16" rubber hose. 3 inches long as insulation, slid the hose into the slot then slid the rod through into the groove, got it welded without shorting out on the sides.

    garage door tech here. have had numerous cases where the spring pipe (part that door attaches to door) breaks and either have to weld it back together between the pipe and head plate (requiring bending rod to fit the gap) or burn a hole through the head plate and weld it through the hole. a good 6010 pass to cut some of the grease and debris i cant clean and door is back in working order until a permanent fix can be made, can honestly say i would be SOL without stick rods to make the repairs. great process for any out of position or mobile work

    Learned this workin in scrapyard maintenance. You’ll get in some interesting situations working on heavy equipment. Sometimes ya gotta get creative. That being said I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone bring this up in a video! Great tip for people who don’t know this little trick! 🤘🏽

    Hey, I have a flex tip nozzle on my mig and two extended reach fixed nozzles (90° & straight tip). I'm able to shape that flex nozzle to weld in some crazy areas & positions and sometimes assisted with a mirror.

    As a certified high pressure Boilermaker welder, there have been many times when I've bent my rod to get the weld done. At times it has included duct taping the stinger to a broom handle, to get into tight places. When welding a "dutchman into tubes, where you only have access from one side, the solution is to weld through a "keyhole". The hole is just shy of the diameter of the tube. I've TIG welded the root then 7018 fill and cap. A cooler (crowned) weld won't give the penetration into the parent metals, plus you have a greater chance of a slag inclusion. I was welding on a blast furnace "coke oven" 1.5 inches thick with 100% weld penetration. After welding the interior, I went to the outside and after power brushing began 1/8" E7018 at 150. The weld tech saw the spatter (from running so hot) and commented on it. I assured him that as far from the weld machines as we were and the fact that the welds were to be x-rayed I guaranteed there'd be no problems. All field welds not only passed the tests but exceeded the welds of the shop, for quality.

    Another great video! Stick welding while not as popular anymore with all the faster wire feed types available, especially in the making of high rise buildings and such, still can’t “out do” stick welding. Especially when crazy angles or wild weather interferes with every other process. Stick welding is every bit as strong as the most modern wire fed welding, but easier. Some might even say that stick welding is the strongest type of weld, depending on the electrode type and the man behind the stinger! Stick welding is also easier in that one doesn’t need to worry about gas cylinders to haul around nor welding on dirty metal when you can’t get an angle grinder or die grinder into a tight spot. If God took away all wire feed welding, stick welding would suffice just fine. It’s just a slower process. I think it has more “pros” than “cons” to its process than any other welding type. Stick for LIFE!!!! 😂

    For many years my dad would bend the rod right at the stinger. Especially when building with pipe. As the weld progresses you just push down on the rod into the puddle and it will change the angle of the rod and stinger to keep hand position comfortable as you weld around the pipe. Bending the rod to reach a tight spot that a full length rod won’t is common. I do that often when the need arises with heavy equipment repairs. And yes a stick will reach areas that a wire feed gun won’t fit. And out in the field stick doesn’t care if there is wind or not. Your doing a great thing sharing your knowledge online to those who may just be learning or are not in the trade but need pointers as they do the hobby thing. 👍

    Absolutely, I had to repair a plow frame a number of years ago, and with the uprights around where the repair area was, there was no way to get a mig gun the 8" down to make the repair. There unfortunately was no way to properly clean the repair area, but good old 6011 to the rescue.

    5:03 - not only does Austin look like a proper welder, he even sounds like it. Great stick tips. I'm a craftsman so only stick, TIG and gas weld - none of this shut your eyes and squeeze the trigger MIG for me :)

    I've ran a flexible MIG torch since the early 2000's. It is not new technology. Doesn't replace stick when application demands it (pipe in the field) but you can do similar things with other welding forms. Lord only knows how many miles I've ran through my Miller Suitcase 12Vs, but I've only gone through 2 flex head torches. Wish I knew the brand off the top of my head, but when you don't buy them that often and start getting old you can forget.

    Done both of those tricks a few times. Especially helpful when you need to weld a nut on to a broken bolt head, or broken exhaust manifold stud.

    rebuilt a many bush hogs in my day still do at least 4-6 every year but most people tear'em up in warm weather and sit on'em thru the winter and then gotta hav'em next day in the spring so they can bush hog,i always tell'em its winter work when work slacks off

    I had to do some welding on an armoured CAT excavator . To prevent removing the armour I had to use the first 4” of a stick though an access panel.

    Many times I’ve welded two thin pieces of sheet metal that overlap by turning up the heat slightly and burning through both pieces and then on your way out pausing slightly and you’ll get the most beautiful button weld you ever saw. Think spot welder and you’ll get the picture.

    I just scored a Miller thunderbolt been amazed at the simplicity versatility and reliability. What's a duty cycle? My Lincoln will tell you 10 minutes but that Miller says grab another stick.

    In shipbuilding I've seen welders welding two sticks end to end for reach. Also using a mirror to weld behind a support. Always in a *very* confined space, hard to understand how could they breathe in there.
    Honestly, it's one if the hardest earned money I can think of

    I am a welder fabricator with 30 years experience. Every welder should learn stick before moving on to wire. There are things that stick welding can do that a MIG can't... what you are welding today, stick wouldn't be my first choice, it's just too slow. Metal Core or dual shield flux, I could weld each one of those sides in one continuous weld about 10x faster than stick... BTW MIG necks can bend, you just need the right neck... like I have in my toolbox 🙂 as well as an assortment of customized consumables to fit in tight places.

    Wow. I welded exhaust pipe on a car a couple weeks ago. Top part was hard to attack with the mig gun. I was thinking how a mig is limited in these situations and stick could bend. Awesome video.

    I figured this one myself when trying to weld against a wall so impossible to put whole stick there with your arm as well. But the thing when you put the rod to the holder electrode in the middle (and scrape the "flux") didn't occur to me. I always burned the electrode a little on some other place to get a smaller stick. Very handy indeed, you can't do this with any other method. Also welding outside in wind is great with sticks !

    I think if you reverse the polarity the spatter is less and it will sound like you want. And your weld looks great. Hobart 7018 and Lincoln 7018 run different.

    On thin sheet metal it helps to back step to not get to much warpage . Weld towards your last pass finishing on the start button of that last pass. Also Bent thousands of rods to get the bottoms, sometimes only being able to see with one eye . Good Video Austin. Austin Were you able to try that pipe Saddle scribe I sent you yet ?

    I was water well driller for 20 years in the northwest and we run steel casing a lot and the welds must be strong if they break you loose a hole cost thousands. Well it’s a pain in the ass being under the table of drill rig about 3-4 ft high depending but your in water and cuttings or snow every time and getting around back side of casing and making good triple pass welds you damn near can’t see you learn to do some interesting things to get the job done.😂
    Went through more 7018 then I’d like to think of!

    That is a great tip. But They do make flexible heads for the other styles of welding and there's video of the passthrough technique with Tig that you mentioned. Of course can't do Tig on the pipeline from a time and weather

    do not forget flex head, swan neck for a MIG, i used one for exhaust work on cars, another, i do not recommend I have some custom bent oxygen acetylene welding tips, i can only assume to go around obstructions? i bought out a retiring welder, and got a lot of his stuff dirt cheap. i do have an old bushog that I ripped side out of 15 years back, but i torch welded it, as was easier to take tanks to tractor, than bring bush hog to home and electric weld it. used it a few more years, quit farming, its sitting my my woods to this day

    Respect the heck out of you Austin and follow all your videos since you started. I work pipeline myself but work small jobs when I’m layed off/at home mainly for friends and locals around town. What do you charge hourly, I think I’m being way too cheap just trying to get a good idea of an in shop rate and a truck rate while I’m at home doing side jobs

    Why such a small rod? I'd use 1/8th or 5/32 on ⅜ material. I like 3/32 for roots on repairing cracks, then step up from there.

    Much prefer stick rather than mig👍great to burn a full rod all the way down to stub😎back in the day I often had to repair farm kit that was mig welded and had failed 😲if mig welds look ok they may not be🤔 but if stick welds look ok you can pretty much guarantee they're good😉that bush hog made me laugh,spent days on end with one in woods clearing out rides for shooting drives😁does that have chain flails or blades?ours had blades....massive heavy chunks,had to weld the retaining nuts on after one flew off😲never did find it😂🤣😆sure did shake some till I shut it down 😬

    You'll definitely encounter situations where stick welding is the only viable option to get the job done.
    I can recall one instance almost 8 years ago, where I had to execute a weld inside of a pressure vessel with a fairly deep and narrow slot at the very end of it.
    Thank the fuck Christ that I happened to have a drop light hooked up to a 100-foot extension cord at the time.

    Had too bend rods for welding. You can only weld to the first bend. Ha ha

    Engineers be like "Oh they'll weld it!" Welders be like "Well I guess I'll just tack weld two rods together, wrap the splice in electrical tape and hope for the best!" It wasn't pretty but it worked! :) (This was ages ago lol)
