    -At 14:37, I misspoke. Hannah will have her own room because, as Kate explains, she "has headaches because she has migraines. She is woken up too early in the morning because the other kids wake her up. She tends to sleep in."

    I'm absolutely BAFFLED at Kate deciding to get two PUPPIES. Not even dogs, but PUPPIES and then complain that she doesn't want to potty train them... ma'am you should have adopted a fully grown dog who has already been trained if you didn't want to deal with teaching a puppy how to dog. I also can't believe Kate didn't do research into the dog breed. If she didn't want a fur mess, she should have looked into a hypo-allergenic breed that sheds less. Not to mention that German Shepherds are VERY high energy dogs who can easily become destructive or even dangerous when not exercised and played with enough. She stresses me out so much lol

      @nikkydalby7126 Agree on the littermates point (since littermate syndrome is a risk), but getting a dog from a responsible breeder isn’t a bad thing - since the breeder took the dogs back, that’s actually a good sign they’re responsible instead of a backyard breeder/puppymill. (It’s often a clause included in contracts of good breeders that the owner will return the dog to them if they don’t want it anymore instead of going to a shelter - because the breeder cares about their dogs and will find a new home for them)

    When people are overstimulated and/or dysregulated, they’re unable to think with their prefrontal cortex, which is the part of the brain that allows us to make conscious decisions. This is especially true for kids. Growing up in a chaotic stressful environment, only getting attention (which kids NEED) when acting out, and probably knowing (either consciously or subconsciously) that she was the least favorite twin for both her parents and her siblings, makes Maddie’s behavior make so much sense bc she was probably unable to regularly access her prefrontal cortex frequently!
    This doesn’t even factor in the influence that her parents behavior has and any potential mental health/developmental issues.
    Plus her behavior and developmental wouldn’t classify as notably behind for a 10-year-old.

      This! Maybe it’s just the fact that I’m autistic, but I acted like this until age 13 when I was overstimulated, especially when my younger siblings were a lot to handle. This just seems like normal kid behavior, and if it’s not, it’s certainly normal neurodivergent kid behavior (no speculation on Maddie, herself; just a comment about myself)

    As someone in the dog industry, the decisions they made with getting the puppies is wild! For starters its not recommended to get puppies from the same litter or get two puppies of the same age at the same time, because of something called littermate syndrome. Basically it often ends up with aggression issues between the dogs as well as other dogs and even people.
    Also i would have recommended that they get adult dogs and not puppies, 1-2 years old, so they still get a long time with the dogs but get to skip the chaotic and frustrating puppy phase. It'd also allow them to get a dog with a developed personality that they can be sure can handle the stress and chaos of the family. It'd also allow them to get a dog with little interest in eating toys and other things.
    I'd probably have recommended a golden retriever as well since they are one of the hardest breeds to fuck up (ie give behavioral issues due to lack of training or ineffective training) and are well know for being great with kids. German Shepherds are great dogs but they really do need an owner who is consistent and vigilant with training and socialization, things i think Jon and Kate would be too busy with the kids to really focus on, and with so many people in the house its hard to remain consistent with training, which ultimately confuses dogs and makes training infinitely more difficult. Also shepherds are big and strong and while growing into their bodies can struggle to understand their own strength and could really injure a kid accidentally.
    Some retired breeding dogs would have been a good choice, as these dogs spend the beginning of their lives around people who know what they are doing and a dog with strong maternal skills would be really good around all the kids. The children have an abundance of love to give, and a dog who maybe lacked this individual attention during their breeding years would benefit from that abundance, while also still being able to better handle the more overwhelming aspects of the families life. 2 puppies was simply not a good choice for them.

    • @Supersoccerchic
      @Supersoccerchic 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Every single person on the planet gets puppies and not adult dogs. It happens all the time. The reason why people do it is because of views if they're on reality TV. They don't do it because they want to. Kate and Jon shouldn't have gotten two dogs but they also shouldn't have been stupid enough to not neuter their only dog that they had because they got two of the puppies from that person's owner of the mother dog and that's super irresponsible too. Also, who cares about littermate syndrome? That's rare and never happens. If it does, that's just bad luck. I personally would get littermates from a litter and I doubt they'd get "littermate syndrome". If they do, they can obviously go back to the breeder but I highly doubt that would happen.

      Think TLC did a lot to pay for the costs of building the Duggars' house too. Jim Bob Duggar kept going on about building it only with family and friends, as a way to save money and be financially responsible, but TLC started filming one of the pre-show specials, and wanted the house to actually get done (the building process had been very slow with just friends and family on deck) so TLC made them bring in professionals and paid for the labor costs, so they would actually have a finished house to film for the special, whilst still being able to release the special in a timely manner.

I’m not surprised maddie devolved into a bit of a tantrum, it’s totally normal, she was stressed and overwhelmed and being filmed. None of it was appropriate and her behaviour makes total sense. Here's my lovely PSA: if you want a dog that is already trained, potty trained, spayed/neutered and vaccinated, adopt a dog from a prison. They take dogs from kill shelters and pair them with an inmate who fosters them and gets them ready to be adopted. We got our dog when she was still a puppy from one and she was only $150. Don't be like Kate and go to a breeder then complain you have to actually, ya know train these dogs

    • @Supersoccerchic

      Why would I get a dog from a prison? I'm not going to a prison just to get a dog for cheap. That's so risky, not to mention ridiculous. If you want a dog so badly, get a puppy to train yourself or get an adult dog that's already trained but there's no reason to adopt a dog from a prison. No one would go dog shopping in a prison.

    • @DarinToBeDifferent
      @DarinToBeDifferent หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Supersoccerchic Often you don't end up at the prison to get the dog, it's a partnership some shelters (I think usually county shelters) have with local prisons, from my understanding of it. Its just a foster program that allows prisoners to have rehabilitation with animals, probably only given to prisoners on good behavior. Its meant to be a beneficial program for both the prisoners and the dogs rescued. My husband grew up with a lab mix that was part of one of these programs and they're normally quite well adjusted and can be quite sweet, like other fostered dogs. Outside of where they were fostered, they shouldn't be any different from other dogs. It may not be for everyone, but it's not like this is some illicit operation or anything in most cases. It's not really dog shopping, just another avenue for dog adoption.

    Maddy's outbursts remind me of when I was a kid. I was one of those "weird" kids who were "over dramatic" and a "crybaby". Being born in the bible belt, girls are already perceived to be dramatic (mostly due to the misogyny that festers in this region) even when they don't act out like this, and behaving this way will cause people to treat them poorly. I was socially ostracized for being this way but at the same time, people understood why I was like this since I am autistic. To be fair, I wasn't as "bratty" as Maddy as I will admit she can be rude at times. The part I relate to Maddy is the part where she is overwhelmed with her surroundings, does not pick up on certain cues that other children her age can pick up on, and cries while not caring how "ridiculous" she appears doing so (we need to let kids cry, even when they are over the age of four). I am NOT saying Maddy is autistic as I do not want to paint a false narrative based on a heavily edited show, but I am saying I am one of those people who can relate to real people and fictional characters who are written off as spoiled brats who are only there so people can hate watch them.

They turn away lots of kids if they don’t have a disease that they have trials for. I think we all took the commercials to mean- no child is ever turned away. Unfortunately, not true. 😢

      Well, that’s understandable. It’s not like all types of cancer are treated the same and it’s impossible to specialize in every single type of childhood cancer, so perhaps she meant that they don’t turn down any child with cancer that they are ABLE to treat. Obviously if they don’t have the knowledge to treat that cancer, it’s not in the child’s best interest to be accepted into their program.

    Besides Kate being relentlessly mean, she's also *so* superficial. She talks about "making memories" and "the meaning of life" but when her child says "I love you" she says "oh honey". Not to defend Kate (and not to say I have NEVER played with kids when watching them) but I started babysitting at 12 and did so for nearly ten years. I have experience watching 1-10+ kids at a time, and it’s exhausting just to babysit them and sometimes sitting and watching is the best I could do with the energy I have. Imagine watching 8 kids while feeding them and doing all their routines on time every single day. I don’t blame her for sitting and watching. You do see sometimes the kids coming up and playing with her/cuddling, so. I don’t think it’s completely fair to shame her for never playing with them from the bits we see.

    Dani, the reason why no sane person lets their kids name their pets is because if the kids are super young, the names would probably be "Butt" or "Heinie" in Kate's words or "Bug" or something dumb because they're kids. It's like with Cara and Mady naming the dogs too. I bet if they ended up naming the dogs, the little kids wouldn't like those names and that would cause fights too. No child should name the dog. The parents and kids can agree on the names but ultimately, it's up to the parents to decide on the names for the pets since they'll do most of the work for them and the paperwork and everything. • @caitlynr7295
      @caitlynr7295 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I mean, I think it was less that they had 8 kids - because you're right, there's tons of families that have 8 kids, you don't get a show till you reach double digits at least lol - and more to do with the fact that she had sextuplets. Most of my extended family is Mormon and quite a few have 6+ kids, but I would still be shocked if any of them had sextuplets. 6 newborns at one time, 6 infants at one time, 6 kids getting potty trained at one time, 6 terrible twos at one time, etc. There's definitely novelty in that. People are impressed with twins or triplets, it's understandable that SIX at once is gonna generate interest from some people, even people with big families. This wasn't exactly the same as like, the Duggars. I'm pretty sure that if a member of your old ward had sextuplets, it would've caught the attention of even the other large families in your community.
      Now, I don't understand how the show stayed on air so long when Kate was insufferable and most of the show was her and jon arguing instead of anything really interesting about raising sextuplets. Like it genuinely just seems miserable to watch. But the initial interest absolutely makes sense to me if only as a brief curiosity.

      If I remember correctly, Alexis would wake up early and wake the rest of the girls up, so they moved her into her own room, so the other little girls could get sleep.

      I mispoke as it's actually Hannah who will be alone. Episode 30 at 6: 10, Kate says Hannah will have her own room because she "has headaches because she has migraines. She is woken up too early in the morning because the other kids wake her up. She tends to sleep in."

    I absolutely hate how they had their old house decorated/ furnished. They could have done a way better job utilizing their space. Kate is always complaining about how little room they had, but it seems like they could have done more to make use of the space. They had that spare office/bedroom in the main floor. Instead of putting a couple kids in there they used it as a play room? They already had the whole basement. Or why not use the basement as one big room for the kids? Did that bother anyone else? Lol

    • @nicolemensch4343

      Not to defend their choices but having the only play space for little kids in the basement doesn't work well when you need to cook & supervise them.

    Braces at age 8????? I don't think I've ever seen that. I had braces in high school, and my roommate got them in her 30s.
    To be fair to Joel and the "still going through it" bit, it looks like his sister hits him with her giant stick. That would make me more upset, too.

    • @lawreb91
      @lawreb91 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Also to be fair about pre=naming dogs, when you've got eight little voices all wanting their name picked, it could be a mess and make kids mad that their name didn't get picked? It took me and my sister a while to agree on a name for our puppy, and we were two kids.

      Also, braces are common starting at age 8 because it's how they want the kids' teeth to be straight. I mean, I'd start young for any kids I have if they don't have braces. Also, I'd hate for my teenagers to go through braces like I did and I got braces when I was 16 and it sucked. I also got a palette expander for ten months too and had to wear mold retainers for 5 years and I haven't kept that up and now, my teeth are the same as they were when I first got braces but I'm not getting braces again unless I get amazing dental insurance and an amazing husband to help me adjust the expander.
