Why Study 'Q' with Sara Parks

  • Dr Sara Parks introduces the text that lies behind the gospels of Matthew and Luke - to which we give the name ‘Q’. This notion of Q was put forward to explain a literary problem: how to explain the fact that there is so much overlap of material between the gospels of Matthew and Luke. But Q has another, probably more important, use: it allows us to see the way the teachings of Jesus were heard and transmitted in the period of, at least forty years, between the time of Jesus and the gospels as we have them. Q is the earliest accessible tradition of Jesus’ teaching.

    16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
    17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

    Separate accounts by separate people, of the sayings of Jesus the teacher. Which much of Jesus's wisdom was taken from, and rephrased from earlier Jewish writings such as Sirach

    This might touch upon a universal ambivalence towards the gods/god and their response in our worship and prayer; as it relates to us mortals and our needs and expectations.
    The results are determined in the parable by a persistent "knock, and the door shall be opened.".
    The instant and obvious assumptions about the judge, or neighbor, is eventually mitigated by the actual assistance they give.
    "Judge not, lest ye be judged."

    Any attempt to "reach behind" the canonical gospels to get to the "real words of Jesus" should make us hesitant. We acknowledge that Matthew and Luke ARE the real, inspired word of God, just as much as anything Jesus said while walking among men. Dr. Parks is correct to say that Matthew and Luke are providing an *interpretation* of the words and events of Jesus' life, however we need to remember that this is *inspired* interpretation, and as such, is more valuable than any ur-text that scholars can come up with. Q can be helpful for locating Mt/Lk's interpretation, but our response should be to wholeheartedly adopt this interpretation, not to strip it away.

      It depends whether one is interested in this material for scholarly reasons or others. No scholar would operate on the basis that a particular interpretation is inspired without qualifying what that meant.

      Why didn't Jesus write his/her own words? Why does Moses need Aaron to speak for him/her?

    Pure heresy. God isn’t the wicked judge just like god isn’t the father giving the bread instead of the serpent. If a wicked judge comes to mercy through persistence how much more will a loving god. Stop trying to restructure the gospel because you’re bored.

    The NT gospels are not remembered history. The Jesus story is a myth placed back into an historical setting.
