Apparently the Doctor has always got to be played by a British actor, I once suggested (in a facebook group) that Hugh Laurie should play the next Doctor, to which a lot of Americans replied "yeah but he's not British" just goes to prove how good British actors are when they can even convince Americans that they are American 😂
There is no bar on overseas actors playing the role. Though as Billie Piper was going through a messy divorce from Chris Evans at the time, it was in her contract that the Doctor could not be ginger.
@@TimeyWimeyLimey yeah there's no hard and fast rule, but fans would get very angry if a non-british actor played the role. it's a tradition at this point for the doctor to ALWAYS be british
@@TimeyWimeyLimey I think you'll find the only rule about the series is that the Doctor should always be played by a British actor, why do you think in the movie he was played by Paul McCann even though it was co-produced with universal studios and all the other actors were American, even The Master was played by an American actor.
Harriet Jones becomes a semi recurring character and also pops up in the spin offs. Glad you spotted the Bad Wolf as time goes on there a lots of little pointers fore shadowing what's to come.
The character of Jackie is so well written and played. Easy to write off a just a slightly annoying comic character but actually played with some real pathos.
It’s not two episodes and then the end of season, it’s two episodes and then things kick into HIGH GEAR with this season. Eccleston is a serious and amazing actor, absolutely fantastic and he burns up the screen with his presence as you’ve noticed. Probably the best actor who ever played the doctor in terms of raw talent. But don’t worry you’ll love the next few seasons David Tennant really inhabits the role and has some of the best individual episodes of the entire run of Doctor Who.
Haha, someone's hooked! Ecclestone is an incredible doctor and absolutely perfect to reprise the character, I'd have loved to have watch him in more but the progression was done really well - and is the whole point of regenerations. Loving both your reactions to these and the classics - thank you!
Glad you are liking what you see . The effects of being the Doctors companion on family and friends is something that wasn't really featured much in the original . The way they brought the show back caters well for old and new fans .The balance was just right There are references to the past whilst. addressing things that concern today's audience . Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper acted their socks off and hopefully Russel TDavies hasn't lost the knack .
Christopher Eccleston - fantastic actor who plays a wide range of roles, but usually really excels in gritty social dramas. A great way to re-launch the Who franchise with him in the lead.
Sadly, quite an honest depiction of modern society and certain authorities attitudes. Though it is true that 33% of female murders are committed by their partner or ex-partner
He wasn't really arrested, just brought in for questioning, but they didn't have any evidence to hold him. That part makes perfect sense to me, the messed up part is that everyone believed he killed her anyway, even though there wasn't any evidence to confirm that theory. It says something about human nature I think, the way people jump to conclusions and make their own verdicts based on their pre-conceptions and biases, regardless of the evidence. That's honestly gotten even more extreme in some ways today, with cancel culture. People will jump on the bandwagon with little to no actual evidence and plenty of innocent people's lives are ruined.
I am glad that you are putting the 2 parter's together (please continue), I would hate to have to wait another week to see your reactions. I do love this particular storyline. I also really love your reactions to this series and that you are enjoying them so much, its like re-watching them again through you. :)
During the crowd scene after the UFO crash, someone is heard saying "It's that Ken Livingstone" who was mayor of London at the time of this episode. Also, spaceship with a truck horn!
People like the David Tennant version of doctor who because he and the story lines were so good, but for me I think the Christopher Eccleston's version was just as good.
Vague spoilers connected to series 1-4: One thing I absolutely love about David Tennant is how seamless the character transition is. Like, he's clearly different, but he's also very much the same. You can see a lot of Eccleston's doctor in him still, and it really softens the blow of losing Eccleston. Tennant was a lot better at that than other doctors I've seen, probably largely because he's such an incredible actor and because Russel T Davies was at the helm and wrote his character in that way. To me, Eccleston and Tennant go hand-in-hand. You can't really have one without the other or you're missing something. Tennant just had a lot more time to solidify himself, and also was the latter iteration. Plus he's just a pretty incomparable acting talent, though Eccleston is very good.
Bless you, we grew up with Dr Who....my older brother used to hide behind the couch when the Darleks appeared! He's just retired from RAF!!😂 My daughter was a massive fan...still is at 23..thank you for your reaction.....& making me smile..again. love & light 💜🏴🌻.
Dr Who had me hooked when I was a kid in the 1960s. I loved it through to the mid 80s when it seemed to lose direction, ending in 1989. There was an attempt to revive it in the 90s, but it started with a bang, as you've found out, in 2005. My own kids who were teenagers were instantly hooked by it, and I loved watching it with them. Glad you've joined the cult - welcome, friend! By the way, there were 13 episodes in this series. Enjoy them, and you won't be disappointed in series 2 and the new doctor 🤣
One of the old jokes of the classic Doctor Who show was that the show was run on such a shoestring budget that you could see the zipper on the monsters. In fact there's literally an episode of the fourth doctor's time where you actually SEE the zipper, so it's not an untrue fact! haha -- the thing is, this show has always survived by its writing. The budget will get bigger and better in the Nu Who era, to the point that I think now it's indistinguishable from a modern Hollywood movie or tv show. And yeah ... farting aliens. Sometimes the show is campy. But let me tell you ... overlook that, and you'll find some of the best written science fiction in the history of mankind. :) I'm glad you're enjoying the show!! Keep going. We are all here and feeling the feels along with you.
Omg Alan, you’re like so hooked on WHO now! I love it, what everyone is telling you is completely correct Tennant’s Doctor is unbelievable brilliant hence why he’s been asked to return as the Doctor. Unfortunately for Chris the BBC didn’t treat him to well but he did do an amazing job at kick starting the show off, and I don’t know where you’re getting your information but you’ve got few more excellent stories to go yet with CE. Nice job

"Spoilers" (you will learn what I mean soonish) so I will leave you hanging. Unbelievable reaction, the look of amazement & wonder was glorious & your only getting your toes wet, you haven't drived into the pool yet 🤣
Forgive me if I find your reluctance to greet a new Doctor amusing...we ALL went through that in the 70s and 80s! My First Doctor was Jon Pertwee and I had serious reservations when he regenerated into Tom Baker...but the truth is, Tom Baker Is / Was the Best Doctor of all of them! David Tennant is a close second: he committed to the role and gave his best, aided by really good writing. It Gets Better!
Love how you did the 2 parts together hate waiting weekly for people to release reactions to a part 2 (: used to hate having to wait week for week for doctor who when they did that with 2 part stories
I'm glad you are aware there is more of 9 to come than just one episode. But the feeling of losing a doctor is also part and parcel with being a fan of this show. We all go through it with each Doctor and many of the companions as well. The whole 5 stages of grief. :) But that's also the great thing about this show. There is always a new Doctor to step in, a new person/thing by his side. The show literally regenerates itself.
I absolutely love seeing you getting so engrossed and finding the same level of excitement and fascination the weve all got with Doctor Who EB. Its bringing me real happiness😊 So excited for the rest of Chris Eccleston and David Tennant's journeys with you.
"Whitehall" is the name of a street (and the surrounding neighbourhood) in the City Of Westminster. It is named after the old Palace of Whitehall which was a royal residence until it was destroyed by fire in 1698. Today the street is less than half a mile long but absolutely packed with government and civil service buildings, including the Ministry Of Defence and the Cabinet Office. In the media "Whitehall" is often used as a catchall term for the Government and the Civil Service.
It used to be know as the palace of Whitehall, but most of it burned down in the 17th Century, so the site is now mostly open to the public. Most of the civil service have offices in white hall, so white hall usually refers to the civil service and the government as downing street is also in white hall. Horse guards marks the entrance to the old palace which is why they still mount a guard there symbolically even though the old perimeter fence is long gone.
I remember actually making sure to be home for these episodes. I was skeptical originally about the reboot, but as you have seen, it's edge of the seat (or hide behind the sofa) stuff; it was when I was little and it was here. It really was must-watch tv before binging. And yeah, Ecclestone' leaving after one season was a shocker to me back then as well, but I can how he didn't want to be typecast as many of his predecessors had been.
ah thank god the next episode XD massive doctor who addict and it doesn't matter how old it gets many scenes still pull at me heart strings. Though even the role for Eccleston was short many still wish he made a comeback
So awesome to see you watching these. I grew up with repeats of the original and have seen all of the new ones. Now I'm watching them again with you. They just get better and better. Strap in!
Christopher Ecclestone was a fantastic Dr to bring the show back. So sad his health stopped him from doing more The next one was so awesome people forget how good Christopher was. Love your reactions!
Most people fell in love with the 10th Doctor, David Tennant, and they forgot how good the 9th, Ecclestone was. The reboot season with Eccleston highlights the the Doctor’s good points, his constant manic wonder at all the universe has produced. But it also critiques how *strange* his behaviour was with his companions in the first show, which, being aimed at children, didn’t feel obliged to write out companions in an understandable manner. Nor deal with the disruption to their lives, friends and families when the TARDIS didn’t return companions to their timelines without any gaps.
Glad you're enjoying. Just so you know Doctor Who has a story arc that starts in 1975 and continues in what you're watching now. When you watch Classic Who it'll take you a while to get there (1975 is twelve years in). ;-) This is a big series you're watching!
Hello Alan. Great reaction. I loved the way they did this comeback series. Some of the ones I remembered fondly from childhood were looking dated, but this put it back on its pedestal. Keep devouring those clues. I spotted a little pig and a house getting blown in that I had not picked up on before. It must mean something, after all the Doctor would not take the Mickey.
I don’t know who the people are who told you series 1 isn’t good but they are wrong. I guess they were pacifying you incase you weren’t on board with the bad sfx and some campy jokes but it is great character written writing so big green aliens don’t negatively impact great storytelling. Series 1 in my opinion is still one of the best in Who history.
agreed, while the cgi and such are quite bad in series 1 and there are quite a few moments or episodes that i kinda hate (this 2 parter being one example, god they overdo the fart jokes lmao), the only reason its not my favorite is because i'm just not a big fan of the ninth doctor, but i can't deny that every character is incredibly well-written and compelling
Series 1 is fantastic, especially for such a low budget, but even with how great it is I still think series 2-7 are better, then 8-10 go a little downhill and 11-13 completely tank (thanks Chibnall). Fingers crossed for series 14.
One of the things with the Doctor is that most of the time he can't really control exactly when and where the Tardis will materialise - so he ends up in the wrong city or at the wrong time (though those "mistakes" generally mean he ends up where he is needed. The Tardis has a mind of its own.
Think you'll really love the next episode, a real classic - and please, try to avoid all future spoilers as the show benefits without knowing what's coming next :)
Having a ball watching your Ecclestone Dr reactions Alan, Guess you have progressed to the title of Whovian. Still lots of Ecclestone to come but then it all gets a bit Timey Wimey, you will get it later on, Great reaction mate.
Such a shame Chris Ecclestone only did one series - might have to check out some of the audio stories he’s done for Big Finish recently to get some more of the ninth Doctor 😊
For me the first season is pretty good. Some don't like the family drama, but I don't think anyone can deny there are some truely fantastic episodes in it. SFX and costumes haven't aged as well as some seasons though. It's funny seeing Andrew Marr as the news reporter, because he really was a long standing political journalist at the BBC. Quite a lot of the people you see on TV in Dr Who are real presenters. Good to see that you're having so much fun with this though.
5:59 Whitehall is an area of London, which contains the Houses of Parliament and assorted departmental and ministerial offices, so the name is often used as a blanket term for the civil service and government. I get the impression that some Americans use 'Capitol Hill' in the same kind of way.
There was a lot of people who didn't think a new Dr Who revival would work. They really wanted to have an actor as good as Christopher Eccleston to lead the new show. So they agreed from the start, to him only doing one season, and he did a brilliant job. If it hadn't of worked, it would have only lasted one season. Like the bad 1996 Doctor Who movie. Which you have to watch, as the lead actor Paul Mcgann is included in the official list of Doctor regenerations.
Little England does sci fi. We have the stories, just not the budget. But with Dr Who the story came first and if sometimes people think it's a bit basic, that's the sense of humour it uses. It doesn't try to be advanced, only entertaining.
Eccleston could have continued continued but chose to leave saying it was his mission to bring back the thrill of Doctor Who which even by your reaction he succeeded in doing. Yes it gets better... and worse... but you are just at the beginning of a phenomenal journey. Welcome to the Whoniverse you new Whovian!!! Enjoy the ride!!!
The fact that some American people love dr who want an American to be the dr. One American asked if the next person could be African American? I said there are black people in the UK. The new actor is a black British man.
It’s so rare to see people enjoy this two parter the way you did, so refreshing, and yes for some people it gets better and I think writing wise it does but many people still have eccelston as their top dr (for me he’s no.3) And yes if you want to watch some classic who along with this, then watch the daleks episode before you watch “dalek” and watch some Tom baker and Sarah Jane before season 2 maybe “genesis of the daleks “ (that’s my recommendation at least)
I feel you man, I really I missed Eccleston when he regenerated. I also did not like the following doctor ( at least for an episode or two, then I loved him) but really, youre just strapping in, youve got a hell of a ride coming. I cant wait to see you get deeper into this world, its great watcing this through your fresh eyes.
I was literally checking how often you upload these to see how long I'd have to wait for part 2. And then it went on!!! 🎶 Popular, you're gonna be popular 🎶
Imagine the compression field is a belt that's a bit too tight. The relief when you take it off is what they're showing, also some of the people you see were actual BBC reporters at the time.
Well that was one of my favourite reactions to Doctor Who yet, loving that you’re so into it. As a more hard sci-fi type I found this story a little too lite for my tastes, so it interested me that it can be watched so seriously, taste is so very subjective. Btw anyone else have an issue with ‘nuking’ Downing Street? No human casualties? Hmmmm…
Only an episode left? Still got Dalek, fathers day, empty child, doctor dances, boom town, bad wolf... Lot more Eccleston. whoever told you Dalek was the last in the season was lying.
The added bonus - a later Torchwood series reveals that it is, not just her actress, ACTUALLY Tosh from Torchwood Cardiff. Dr Owen Harper called a sickie. No wonder she didn't know it was an alien - Tosh is the tech specialist.
You can love every Doctor... but we all seem to lean towards one more than any of the others. Who it is is different for each person. My Doctor is Eccleston. It will be fun to see who your Doctor ends up being.
Boo at whoever tried to spoil a new Dr coming, please don’t engage in spoilers from now on as it might ruin some fantastic storylines. So glad you’re now a Whovian 🖖🏼
The scientist at 11:57 becomes a main character in the spin off series ‘Torchwood’ You have to start Torchwood series 1 after you finish Doctor Who series 2 🙂 There is also another show called The Sarah Jane Adventures, and Class (and loads more by BBV, Reeltime etc etc I know it’s an iceberg! The order for the licensed BBC stuff is: Dr Who S1 Dr Who S2 Torchwood S1 The Sarah Jane Adventures S1 Dr Who S3 Torchwood S2 The Sarah Jane Adventures S2 Dr Who S4 Torchwood S3 The Sarah Jane Adventures S3 Dr Who S5 Torchwood S4 The Sarah Jane Adventures S4 Dr Who S6 The Sarah Jane Adventures S5 Dr Who S6 Dr Who S7 Dr Who S8 Dr Who S9 Class S1 Dr Who S10 Dr Who S11 Dr Who S12 😁
Can't believe they bought in Muriel Frost one of the best characters from the Doctor Who Magazine comic strips just to have her say nothing and then just killed off like that.
As i try to tell people it wasn't intended to be a fart joke the aliens were compressed with the skin they are wearing alot people seem to misunderstand this.
You may find it interesting that the show only has 1 writer! This tends to be why the plots seem well put together from one episode to the end. i.e Oh that's why that happened Everything is integrated
Alan, when you explore some of the original Who series you'll come across UNIT as well -a British govenment body, led by Captain Lethbridge Stuart who has to deal with new Doctors.
each new actor brings some thing new to the doctor but they always have an underlying character that most of the actors will include in their portrayal of the time lord so keep at it there some really good eps with the next doctors :)
Yeah, BBC is usually 6 episodes - it's 12 because international drama (Canadian copartner CBC). Eccleston is leaving because he was upset at the treatment of staff - someone was giving their subordinate the 'hairdryer treatment' quite unfairly by his opinion & he just lost respect for the management so left. For the record, Big Ben face was Showrunner's fault. The modeller did ask which side to hit & was told the right - then when it came to plotting out the CGI they realised they wanted to hit the left.😂

The Daleks do have a thing about coming ashore from the Thames at Westminster (strictly Southwark/Lambeth) See say Nicola Mudlarking for Thames Shores
Again thank you Alan for checking out this great institution of British TV.... I hope you guys are doing ok and as always PEACE!!!!!
@@liampbjray5562 interesting. What is it about him that you don’t like? I was say he is my second favourite after 12.
Series 1 is fantastic, especially for such a low budget, but even with how great it is I still think series 2-7 are better, then 8-10 go a little downhill and 11-13 completely tank (thanks Chibnall). Fingers crossed for series 14.
People who say that are Tennant fans not Dr. Who fans.
@@joshuajoshua2732 I'm both, loved doctor who since seeing Pertwee reruns in the 90s.
And I've seen most things Tennant is in he's a fantastic actor.
It's kind of weird seeing him in this on the same day he's in the news in his new job at LBC writing a poem about the end of Boris Johnson too.
Glad to see someone mentioning Andrew Marr!
Great reaction to Dr Who I’ve been a fan for years so it’s great to see someone really enjoying it
Dont worry, the classic episodes are usually 25 to half an hr long, enjoy!
Never seen McGann's on film. Didnt he do some of the Big Finish audio versions ?
I love seeing how an American reacts to such an iconic British show. I'm so glad you're enjoying it as much as we do.
It’s so rare to see people enjoy this two parter the way you did, so refreshing, and yes for some people it gets better and I think writing wise it does but many people still have eccelston as their top dr (for me he’s no.3)
And yes if you want to watch some classic who along with this, then watch the daleks episode before you watch “dalek” and watch some Tom baker and Sarah Jane before season 2 maybe “genesis of the daleks “ (that’s my recommendation at least)
Great episode and reaction 👏
I was literally checking how often you upload these to see how long I'd have to wait for part 2. And then it went on!!! 🎶 Popular, you're gonna be popular 🎶
Great reaction 💯👍lol and ya don’t mess with roses mum 😁😁
Hold onto your butts. The next one is *chefs kiss*
Billie Piper, superb, perfect as his companion
I immediately fell in love with her when I saw this the first time.
Imagine the compression field is a belt that's a bit too tight. The relief when you take it off is what they're showing, also some of the people you see were actual BBC reporters at the time.
I forgot this amazing twist at the start
Well that was one of my favourite reactions to Doctor Who yet, loving that you’re so into it. As a more hard sci-fi type I found this story a little too lite for my tastes, so it interested me that it can be watched so seriously, taste is so very subjective. Btw anyone else have an issue with ‘nuking’ Downing Street? No human casualties? Hmmmm…
Interesting fact - if you look at the clock when the space craft hits the tower, the clock is actually in mirror image.
Ecclestone had running battles with producers and directors during the filming , So much so that it wasn`t a surprise He only did one series .
Only an episode left?
Still got Dalek, fathers day, empty child, doctor dances, boom town, bad wolf... Lot more Eccleston. whoever told you Dalek was the last in the season was lying.
So glad you're enjoying the weirdness of it all
You have several more than two more episodes left in the season. Some people might refer to this episode as getting over the hump.
That's quite interesting. I sort of see that.
One of these characters you might see a bit more of if you watch the spin offs later on.
I just realised Tosh from Torchwood is in this episode.
The added bonus - a later Torchwood series reveals that it is, not just her actress, ACTUALLY Tosh from Torchwood Cardiff. Dr Owen Harper called a sickie.
No wonder she didn't know it was an alien - Tosh is the tech specialist.
Yeah - she's called Dr. Sato in this episode and uses her shortened name Tosh Sato in Torchwood.
Whitehall is where the government have their offices in London. It is close to Downing Street.
Doctor Who has got ya mate! 😆👍🇬🇧🇺🇸
You can love every Doctor... but we all seem to lean towards one more than any of the others. Who it is is different for each person. My Doctor is Eccleston. It will be fun to see who your Doctor ends up being.
The Doctor has a Tardis, he can go anywhere.
He can go anywhere the tardis decides
@@seanbesley4011 consensual time travel - is there someone you forgot to ask?😂
Chris Ecclestone was fantastic, but David Tennant was every bit as good. I'm enjoying reliving these with you. All the best, Chas :0)
Boo at whoever tried to spoil a new Dr coming, please don’t engage in spoilers from now on as it might ruin some fantastic storylines. So glad you’re now a Whovian 🖖🏼
32:09 there is more than one more episode of Eccleston left (not saying actual amount cos of spoilers)
Whitehall is like the pentagon. Everyone knows where it is.
BBC TV series are normally 13 weeks. So a quarter of a year. Short series are 6 episodes.
The scientist at 11:57 becomes a main character in the spin off series ‘Torchwood’
You have to start Torchwood series 1 after you finish Doctor Who series 2 🙂 There is also another show called The Sarah Jane Adventures, and Class (and loads more by BBV, Reeltime etc etc I know it’s an iceberg!
The order for the licensed BBC stuff is:
Dr Who S1
Dr Who S2
Torchwood S1
The Sarah Jane Adventures S1
Dr Who S3

The Sarah Jane Adventures S2
Dr Who S4
Torchwood S3

There is a running joke where the actress playing the anchor woman appears on the news foretelling a bad event.
season one has 13 episodes... so you've got a lot more of eccleston to look forward to than you're expecting.
Can't believe they bought in Muriel Frost one of the best characters from the Doctor Who Magazine comic strips just to have her say nothing and then just killed off like that.
...yes.... the farting aliens.... sigh...
Yeah fart jokes are not funny…
Parp
@@warumonzeamon4617 lol
@@julianblake3140 depends on the context...
As i try to tell people it wasn't intended to be a fart joke the aliens were compressed with the skin they are wearing alot people seem to misunderstand this.
Impressed you were so engaged, this isn't even one of the best. Wait until you get to "Midnight"
Unicorn and the Wasp! 👍🏻👍🏻another one of my absolute favourites….
Blink. That's all that needs saying.
@@ZondaFRoadster just don’t……. 😔…..😱😱….💀
You may find it interesting that the show only has 1 writer!
This tends to be why the plots seem well put together from one episode to the end.
i.e
Oh that's why that happened
Everything is integrated
Wait untill you meet tim shaw lol.
